The peripheral nervous system has been the subject of various studies on topics ranging from the innervation of tissues and organs to central nervous system clearance and neuropathies. Because research methods are mainly based on dissection techniques accompanied by histological studies, they inevitably lead to the destruction of the tissue under study. Our team has developed a method consisting of injecting peripheral nerves with barium contrast that can be visualized with computed tomography (CT) scans. We infused unfixed specimens of the vertebral column with contrast agent, subsequently sc

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a serious clinical situation for which no suitable drug therapy exists. SCI often results in paraplegia or quadriplegia and, apart from the personal trauma leads to huge costs to society for rehabilitation or day-to-day life support. Sensory motor dysfunction following SCI is mainly a consequence of the slowly progressing cord pathology after primary injury that worsens over tine. Thus, almost all sensory and motor nerve control and pathways passing through spinal cord and reflexes are compromised in SCI patients. As a result their peripheral nervous system, autonom

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: One of the most frequent neurologic complications reported in inflammatory bowel disease population is peripheral neuropathy; however, clinical aspects of peripheral nerve damage are not well characterized. The aim of the review is to present the existing literature on peripheral neuropathy in inflammatory bowel disease patients.
METHODS: A literature search identified the publications reporting on epidemiology, clinical features, underlying mechanisms and management of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease patients with peripheral nerve involvement.
RESULTS: The pathog

BACKGROUND: The etonogestrel contraceptive implant (Implanon®) is an effective, long-acting subdermal method of hormonal contraception for women.
CASE: We describe a case of forearm pain and hypoesthesia associated with the insertion of the Implanon® contraceptive implant in a healthy 26-year-old female. These symptoms were due to direct implant contact with the medial cutaneous nerve of the forearm. The importance of correct insertion technique is discussed.
CONCLUSION: Care should be taken to avoid nerve injury during insertion of subdermal contraceptive implants. An understanding of regio

BACKGROUND: Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant drug used systemically for the management of neuropathic pain. Antidepressants, as a class of drugs with direct neurologic actions, are becoming widely used for the management of chronic pain, although their mechanisms are not entirely understood. Amitriptyline exerts potent effects on reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin and blocks alpha 2A adrenoreceptors and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors. Because amitriptyline is also a particularly potent blocker of sodium channels and voltage-gated potassium and calcium channels, it has been rec

Schizophrenia is a highly complex and severe neuropsychiatric disorder with an unknown etiopathology. Evidence for a dysregulated immune system in both the risk for and progression of schizophrenia has recently been overwhelming. Importantly, chronic low-grade inflammation both in the periphery and central nervous system has been shown to contribute predominantly to the pathogenesis of schizophrenia in a subset of individuals. Inflammation in the central nervous system is mediated by a range of proinflammatory cytokines, resident immune cells such as microglia, and brain infiltrating periphera

Pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) is a bioactive peptide with diverse effects in the nervous system. In addition to its more classic role as a neuromodulator, PACAP functions as a neurotrophic factor. Several neurotrophic factors have been shown to play an important role in the endogenous response following both cerebral ischemia and traumatic brain injury and to be effective when given exogenously. A number of studies have shown the neuroprotective effect of PACAP in different models of ischemia, neurodegenerative diseases and retinal degeneration. The aim of this rev

Sarcoidosis is a chronic granulomatous disease of unknown cause characterized by the presence of non-caseating granulomas. The disease can affect any organ including the nervous system. Neurosarcoidosis occurs in about 5% patients with sarcoidosis. The clinical presentation of neurosarcoidosis is varied, and it can involve the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system, separately or in different combinations. The diagnosis of neurosarcoidosis is challenging, as biopsies from the nervous system are not readily available. Anti-TNFα agents are becoming one of the cornerstone treatments for

The enteric nervous system comprises neurons and a relatively homogeneous population of glial cells, which differ considerably from those found in other parts of the peripheral nervous system and resemble more closely astrocytes from the central nervous system. It provides a simple model system for the study of neuron/glial interactions and glial cell development. In this study the proliferation rates of purified populations of enteric glia and Schwann cells and their response to several mitogens in vitro were compared. Enteric glial cells divided at a much higher rate than Schwann cells in bo

Autonomic dysfunction is responsible for much of the morbidity associated with frequently encountered neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebrovascular disease, and peripheral neuropathies, as well as with the rarer primary autonomic nervous system degenerations. We review the treatment of those aspects of autonomic dysfunction that often present to the neurologist, including orthostatic hypotension, urinary incontinence and retention, and bowel dysmotility syndromes. Pathophysiology is discussed in each instance as it relates to a rational approach to th

The trematode Dicrocoelium lanceatum known as lancet fluke, is a causative agent of dicrocoeliosis, a widespread parasitic disease of the grazing ruminants. The investigation of the major neurotransmitters and their functions are an important step in the development of a new pharmacological strategy of the struggle against the dicrocoeliosis affecting the neuronal signal substances and the functions of its nervous system. The aim of this work was to study the presence and localization of the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT, 5-Hydroxytryptamine) in the nervous system of D. lanceatum using immu

Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nnAChRs) are members of the ligand-gated ion channel superfamily, and widely expressed in the central and peripheral nervous systems with many subunits. NnAChRs have been represented novel targets for a wide variety of therapeutic agents based on their complex functions. It is known that both central and peripheral nnAChRs are sensitive to various types of general anesthetics, among those, barbiturates, ketamine, volatile and gaseous anesthetics depress nnAChRs at or below clinical concentrations. It is possible that inhibition of nnAChRs is one of f

We report a new case of Whipple's disease (WD) confined to the central nervous system. The patient presented with ataxia, ophthalmoplegia, hypersomnia, hemiparesis and generalized myorhythmia. The diagnosis was confirmed by identification of specific sequences of the causal agent of WD, the actinobacteria Tropheryma whippelii (TW), by PCR of DNA extracted from peripheral blood. An epidemiological survey of TW in patients with dementia suggests that WD is an uncommon cause of dementia in our population. Molecular methods may allow rapid identification of TW in peripheral fluids, and non-invasiv

Classic rabies is a progressive and lethal infectious disease of animals, which may be transmitted to humans. Inter-human infections are extremely rare. The present case describes transmittal of rabies virus by lung transplantation from an infected donor. Histologically, a lymphocytic encephalomyelitis with neuronal cytoplasmic inclusion bodies was found. Immunohistochemically, rabies virus antigen was detected in the central, autonomous and peripheral nervous system. By means of electron microscopy, virions were demonstrated in the brain. A central task of health care in transplantations is t

Recent discoveries of processes that govern regulation of body weight and energy expenditure have led to development of new anti-obesity pharmacological agents. This article will inform health professionals of new anti-obesity medications that target neuronal systems within the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral humoral proteins that send signals to the CNS. An emerging theme of new therapies is to use combination medications that are directed toward several targets or leverage existing gastrointestinal satiety hormonal signals. By using combination therapies, it is anticipated that g

An 11-year-old girl who was taking two appetite-suppressant agents as part of a weight-reducing regimen developed heat-stroke while taking part in a 'nature hike' at an ambient temperature of 34 degrees C. The other 107 participating children suffered no significant ill-effects. Sympathomimetic amines used as appetite suppressants can produce heat intolerance by two mechanisms: they increase endogenous heat production as a result of their stimulatory effects on the central nervous system, and they impede the dissipation of heat from the body by producing peripheral vasoconstriction.

Neuropathic pruritus is a previously neglected symptom of a wide range of neurological diseases. Peripheral nerve or root compression syndromes, space-occupying lesions of the central nervous system, chronic inflammatory neurological diseases and polyneuropathy can cause neuropathic pruritus. Even when the identification of the underlying neurological disease is successful, a direct causal treatment is not always possible, hence an effective symptomatic treatment remains the only therapeutic option. The purpose of this review article is to present the current literature on various therapeutic

Pruritus is a common symptom with primary biliary cholangitis. Research has focused on refining understanding of the neurohumoral pathways involved in transduction of pruritus from peripheral cutaneous receptors to the central nervous system, and identifying modulating drugs. Current treatments have variable efficacy and safety. Because of the deleterious effects on quality of life or debilitation, many patients necessitate individualized therapeutic approaches; clinicians may need to consider invasive treatment options. This article highlights various therapeutic interventions, from general m

The pathogenesis of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) infections in cattle has been studied in recent years by using highly sensitive transgenic-mouse bioassays. It has been shown that in this species, the BSE agent amplifies almost exclusively in the central and peripheral nervous system. Even in animals that were killed in the clinical end stage of the disease, the lymphoreticular system was shown to be free of the infectious agent. No other animal species investigated to date exhibits such a restricted BSE-infectivity distribution pattern. However, there is growing evidence for a radia
