Toxicology in vitro : an international journal published in association with BIBRA2017eng
Epidemiological studies have associated the exposure to permethrin and malathion with increased risk of leukemia and lymphoma. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether in vitro exposure to permethrin and malathion induces aberrations in genes involved in the etiology of these hematological malignancies. Genetic abnormalities in the IGH, KMT2A (MLL), ETV6 and RUNX1 genes, and aneuploidy induced by the in vitro exposure to permethrin and malathion (200μM, 24h), were analyzed by FISH in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The gene fusions IGH-BCL2, KMT2A-AFF1 and ETV6-RUNX1 were furt

A fast static headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC) method was developed to separate all residual solvents present in commercial active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) batches of permethrin. A total of six residual solvents namely 2-methylpentane, 3-methylpentane, methylcyclopentane, n-hexane, cyclohexane and toluene were found in typical commercial batches of permethrin; and three of them are not in the list of ICH solvents. All six residual solvents were baseline separated in five minutes by the new method presented in this paper. The method was successfully validated as per International Con

Permethrin is a commonly used acaricide for tick control on domestic animals and in residential environments, while fipronil use is restricted to on-animal treatment. Following widespread reports of permethrin and fipronil application failures to control indoor infestations of Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille), the brown dog tick, 31 tick populations were obtained from Florida and Texas for acaricide resistance screening. These field-collected ticks from kennels and residential facilities were challenged with technical grade permethrin and fipronil to create dose response curves that were c

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti, the 'yellow fever mosquito', is the primary vector to humans of dengue and yellow fever flaviviruses (DENV, YFV), and is a known vector of the chikungunya alphavirus (CV). Because vaccines are not yet available for DENV or CV or are inadequately distributed in developing countries (YFV), management of Ae. aegypti remains the primary option to prevent and control outbreaks of the diseases caused by these arboviruses. Permethrin is one of the most widely used active ingredients in insecticides for suppression of adult Ae. aegypti. In 2007, we documented a replacement m

The aim of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic and protective efficacy of ivermectin and permethrin against wound myiasis induced by fleshflies in Riyadh region in sheep. Three different protocols were planned to evaluate efficacy of the selected drugs in addition to recording the myiasis incidence and prevalence among infested farms. The obtained results revealed that genital organs were the most common sites of infestation with myiasis in male and females, with high prevalence in spring and autumn seasons and complete disappearance in summer and winter seasons. Application of permethr

The phlebotomine sand fly Phlebotomus perniciosus is one of the main vectors of Leishmania infantum, responsible for human and canine leishmaniasis in the Mediterranean Basin. The objective of this study was to evaluate the repellent and insecticidal efficacy of imidacloprid 10% (w/v)/permethrin 50% (w/v) spot-on against sand flies (P. perniciosus) on dogs. The dogs used in this trial were laboratory-bred beagles: eight were impregnated with the solution (treated group), while the other eight were left untreated (control group). On day 0 the animals in the treatment group received 0.1 ml/kg bo

In the US, 6% sulfur in petrolatum has been the most frequently administered treatment for infantile scabies. It appears to be safe but there is no literature containing a large series of patients on which to base that determination. In the UK, benzyl benzoate is the approved product. Benzyl benzoate is rarely used in the US at the present time. 5% Permethrin is an excellent substitute and has many advantages. It appears to be quite safe in infants, although it is more expensive than other products. It remains present on the skin for several days, therefore protecting against reinfestation. Iv

Pediculosis humanus capitis (head lice) is an important public health problem among school children. In our study, 20,612 schoolchildren (10,367 boys, 10,245 girls) were examined for Pediculus humanus capitis in 36 elementary schools between December 1996 and February 1998 in Ankara, Turkey. The prevalence of pediculosis capitis infestation was found to be 3.4% (701/20,612). Of these, 382 students were treated with application of 1% permethrin cream rinse, and 184 students with 0.4% d-phenothrin shampoo. On day 14 of the controlled trial, the success rates were 93.7% in the 1% permethrin cream

In this laboratory study, we applied 3 formulations of permethrin (Peregin 500 EC, Dragnet 500 EC, and Dragnet 100 ME) and 2 of bifenthrin (Biflex 10 ME and Talstar 80 SC) to swatches of Australian military shirt fabric. The knockdown and mortality of Anopheles farauti and Aedes aegypti after exposure to treated fabrics were compared. The mortality of An. farauti exposed to permethrin-treated swatches for 3 min in World Health Organization test kits was 94.2-100% after initial treatment and fell to < 28% after 2 cold water washes. and knockdown was < 20% after 3 washes. The efficacy and safety of permethrin 1% creme rinse and lindane shampoo were compared for the treatment of head lice (Pediculus humanus var. capitis). A total of 1040 patients in the Nezahualcoyotl community of Mexico City representing 296 family groups were enrolled and randomized to treatment, with one patient in each family designated as the index patient. Among index patients 98% treated with permethrin and 76% treated with lindane were louse-free 2 weeks after treatment (P less than 0.001). Comparable results were found with nonindex patients as well. Mild dermal reactions, such as pruri

The cosmopolitan ectoparasite human head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis (De Geer)(Phthiraptera:Pediculidae), affects mostly school-aged children, with infestations reported every year mainly due to louse resistance to pyrethroids. One of the main resistance mechanisms of pyrethroids is the target site insensitivity (kdr), which is caused by single-nucleotide point mutations (SNPs) located in the voltage-sensitive sodium channel gene. In this study, we analyzed individual head lice toxicologically via the description of their susceptibility profile to permethrin and genetically through the ge

Permethrin, the most popular insecticide among the synthetic pyrethroids, has been used worldwide to control a wide range of insects in agriculture, forestry, public health, and homes. Humans may have suffered potential exposure to this compound. The commercial formulation of permethrin contains trans and cis isomers. Here, at the same dosage, we made a comparison of the reproductive effects between these two isomers. Male adult ICR mice were orally administered trans- or cis-permethrin daily for 6 weeks at a dose of 0 or 70 mg/(kg day). In the cis-permethrin exposure group, the caudal epididy

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the principal vector of dengue and yellow fever flaviviruses. Permethrin is an insecticide used to suppress Ae. aegypti adult populations but metabolic and target site resistance to pyrethroids has evolved in many locations worldwide. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling permethrin survival in Ae. aegypti were mapped in an F(3) advanced intercross line. Parents came from a collection of mosquitoes from Isla Mujeres, México, that had been selected for permethrin resistance for two generations and a reference permethrin-susceptible strain originally from New Or

Permethrin-treated bednets reduce mortality and morbidity from malaria in Gambian children. However, it is not certain how this effect is achieved, as neither mosquito numbers nor the human blood index of indoor-resting female Anopheles gambiae Giles sensu lato (Diptera: Culicidae) mosquitoes have been reduced when treated bednets were introduced into a community. One possibility is that insecticide-treated bednets divert mosquitoes from children to adults. To investigate this hypothesis, a cross-over trial with insecticide-treated bednets was undertaken in two small Gambian villages. To diffe

The use of botanical compounds such as essential oils has recently become the subject of great interest as a natural means of pest control because of their ovicidal, larvicidal, or adulticidal activity against various insect species including head lice. We tested and compared the efficacy of pure oxygenated monoterpenoids that are main ingredients of essential oils of good biological activity. We used pulegone and citral, components of Aloysia citrodora, and geraniol, citronellol, and linalool, components of Geranium sp. oil. We found that citronellol and geraniol showed the highest knockdown

BACKGROUND: Head lice infestation (HLI) is a vexing problem for pediatricians and families because lice are becoming resistant to approved antipediculosis agents.
OBJECTIVE: This study compared the efficacy of 3 different treatments for HLI and determined whether combination therapy reduced treatment failures.
DESIGN AND SETTING: A randomized, clinical trial performed in 3 private practices.
PARTICIPANTS: The population was children ranging in age from 2 to 13 years.
METHODS: HLI was diagnosed by direct inspection of the hair and scalp. Children were assigned to 1 of 3 groups: 1) 1% permet

Topical permethrin (5%), though considered the treatment of choice for scabies, has few drawbacks (expensive, poor compliance). This study aimed to compare the efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of topical permethrin (5%) and oral ivermectin for treating childhood scabies. This randomized controlled trial was conducted in the dermatology and pediatric outpatient clinic of a tertiary care center between August 2023 and December 2024. Children in the study and control groups received oral ivermectin (200 µg/kg) and 5% permethrin, respectively, at an interval of 7 days. The cure rate at the

The non-genotoxic synthetic pyrethroid insecticide permethrin produced hepatocellular adenomas and bronchiolo-alveolar adenomas in female CD-1 mice, but not in male CD-1 mice or in female or male Wistar rats. Studies were performed to evaluate possible modes of action (MOAs) for permethrin-induced female CD-1 mouse liver and lung tumor formation. The MOA for liver tumor formation by permethrin involves activation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), increased hepatocellular proliferation, development of altered hepatic foci, and ultimately liver tumors. This MOA is

Scabies is a contagious disease with increasing frequency. This is confirmed by data from insurance companies as well as increased search queries on Google. There is a controversial discussion in the scientific literature whether the mite has become resistant to standard therapy with permethrin. One case report and a group of cases (N = 12) from a mother-child facility are described in the following demonstrating decreased effectiveness of permethrin therapy. Dermatoscopy can be helpful in diagnosis and in assessing effectiveness of therapy. Dermatoscopic criteria are shown and therapeutic con
