Four patients with bilateral femoral shaft fractures sustained 4 peroneal nerve palsies and 2 compartment syndromes during supine intramedullary nailings of their fractures. In each case, the compartment syndrome or common peroneal nerve palsy or both developed in the leg that was placed initially in the calf-supported leg holder during intramedullary rodding of the contralateral femur. Three of 4 patients had near to full recovery of motor strength postoperatively. The authors recommend that a leg with a fractured femur not be positioned in a calf-supported leg holder.

We report two patients suffering from mixed deep partial and full skin thickness flame burns covering 45 and 95 per cent of the total body surface area respectively. These patients, following sepsis and multisystem failure, developed unilateral peroneal nerve palsy. The possible aetiology of isolated injury to the peroneal nerve in burned and critically ill trauma patients is discussed.

We report 3 cases of isolated deep peroneal nerve injury as a complication of arthroscopic knee surgery. At the level of the knee joint, the deep and superficial peroneal nerves are usually joined as the common peroneal nerve. However, because of the fascicular structure, a partial nerve injury can result in an isolated injury to the deep peroneal nerve fibers. Due to the intraneural topography of the peroneal nerve, electrodiagnostic studies in a partial nerve injury may erroneously indicate a more distal lesion.

The interosseous route remains popular for tibialis posterior tendon transfer for drop-foot. It leaves a smaller range of movement than the circumtibial route, but lengthening the calcaneal tendon may improve this. The results of this present series indicate that, in order to predict a good functional result, the ankle must be held in at least 20 degrees of dorsiflexion at the time of tendon transfer.

Peripheral nerve blockade is commonly employed as perioperative pain management for posterolateral corner (PLC) knee reconstructions. However, common peroneal nerve (CPN) analgesia limits immediate postoperative assessment (within 0.5-2 hours of surgery) for iatrogenic injury and may further cause a "second hit" injury in cases of preoperative CPN trauma. Meanwhile, lack of lateral knee analgesia may result in intractable pain and the need for postoperative "rescue block." The incidence of iatrogenic peroneal nerve injury (from nerve block and/or surgical exploration) and frequency of "rescue

BACKGROUND: Midfoot osteoarthritis affects approximately 12% of adults over 50 years and is a common cause of chronic foot pain and disability. When conservative management fails, midfoot arthrodesis remains the standard surgical treatment but carries significant morbidity, including nonunion rates of 3-10% and prolonged non-weightbearing. Deep peroneal nerve (DPN) neurectomy has emerged as a motion-preserving alternative; however, clinical evidence has not been systematically evaluated.
METHODS: A systematic review following PRISMA 2020 guidelines was conducted (PROSPERO: CRD420251266344). M

Peripheral nerve entrapment is an underdiagnosed pathology when it is not the most common syndromes such as carpal tunnel syndrome or cubital tunnel syndrome. The symptomatic lesion of the superficial peroneal nerve (SPN) has a low incidence, being its diagnosis sometimes complex. It is based on a exhaustive physical examination and imaging tests such as ultrasound (US) or magnetic resonance imaging (RMI). Conservative treatment may sometimes not be sufficient, requiring surgical techniques in refractory cases. We present a patient diagnosed with superficial peroneal nerve entrapment by ultras

BACKGROUND: Adipose lesions of nerve are rare tumors that can cause nerve symptoms from either intrinsic or extrinsic compression.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors present a case of a patient with a 10-year history of progressive, persistent leg pain and dorsal foot paresthesias/dysesthesias. Imaging revealed several nondistinct nodules of indeterminate significance along the course of the superficial peroneal nerve (SPN). Surgery demonstrated six distinct extraneural lipomas studded on a 10-cm segment of the main SPN and one of its muscular branches in the midleg. The lesions were adherent to the S

OBJECTIVE: Common peroneal nerve (C-PN) entrapment neuropathy is the most common peripheral nerve neuropathy of the legs. C-PN decompression surgery is less invasive but may result in neurological complications. We report a rare case of nerve paralysis immediately after C-PN decompression surgery.
CASE REPORT: An 85-year-old man presented with leg numbness and pain. An electrophysical study revealed C-PN entrapment in the affected area and he underwent surgical decompression. Immediately after the procedure he complained of slight paralysis without pain (manual muscle test: 3/5), which gradua

Muscle hernias of the extremities most commonly occur in the leg, between the knee and ankle. Symptomatic muscle hernias in the leg are rare cause of chronic leg pain and neuropathy, and not routinely encountered in surgical practice. Although this condition is especially an esthetic problem, with palpable subcutaneous soft tissue mass, it can lead to spontaneous pain, cramp, local tenderness or potentially neuropathic symptoms. Moreover, among leg muscles involved in this process, peroneus brevis is less frequent than tibialis anterior. Magnetic Resonance Imaging is the method of choice in es

BACKGROUND: Melorheostosis is a bone hyperostosis disorder characterized by flowing bone thought to occur in a sclerodermal distribution. These bony lesions often arise in soft tissues adjacent to joints. Pain arises from joint limitations and impingements, but diffuse pain can also occur.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case of a patient with symptomatic compression of the common peroneal nerve by an extraosseous hyperostotic tissue island in a patient with melorheostosis.
CONCLUSIONS: Melorheostosis is a rare bone overgrowth syndrome that can lead to joint mobility limitations and pain. In

BACKGROUND: Sensory or motor syndromes, especially mononeuropathies, are infrequent complications of herpes zoster.
CASE REPORT: We describe a 77-year-old woman who developed a severe right common peroneal nerve mononeuropathy with clinical onset 10 days after a vesicular rash consistent with herpes zoster in the territory of distribution of this nerve.
CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, peroneal nerve mononeuropathy associated with herpes zoster has not been reported previously.

Knee dislocation with a common peroneal nerve injury is a serious problem. A case of multi-ligamentous knee injury with the unusual and interesting finding of a common peroneal nerve rupture incarcerated within the knee joint is presented. MRI and arthroscopic images are used to document this occurrence. To date, there are no published reports of a similar finding in the English orthopaedic literature. Level of evidence IV.

Peroneal neuropathy is the most common mononeuropathy of the lower limbs. The causes of peroneal neuropathy include trauma, tumors of the nerve and nerve sheath, entrapment, and others like perineurioma, fibromatosis, lymphoma, and intraneural and externeural ganglia. The diagnosis is based on clinical manifestations and electrophysiological studies. Nowadays, however, magnetic resonance (MR) neurography is a complementary diagnostic technique that can help determine the location and cause of peroneal neuropathy. In this article, we describe the MR anatomy of the peroneal nerve, its relations,

Peroneal nerve palsy is one of the more common entrapment neuropathies of the lower limb and can be a result of a multitude of causes. Compression stockings are commonly used for prophylaxis of deep venous thromboembolism after surgery. The entrapment on the head and the neck of the fibula caused by compression stockings is uncommon. In this article, the authors report a 46-yr-old male patient who was operated on for postauricular squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. On the third postoperative day, it was noticed that compression stockings had rolled down, and a linear impression mark was obse

UNLABELLED: Peripheral nerve injuries may have a number of causes, most commonly mechanical. We describe a case of a deep peroneal nerve palsy in an adolescent boy which coincided with a large growth spurt. Spontaneous recovery of full function was seen without intervention.
CONCLUSION: In the absence of any other causative factors, we believe that this growth spurt resulted in temporary compression of the deep peroneal nerve at the level of the knee producing transient neurapraxia.

Peroneal nerve palsy is the most common entrapment neuropathy in the lower extremity, and the presentation of foot drop is a frequent initial manifestation of this disorder. This condition can have a marked influence on the patient's activities of daily living, and is classified as 'Impairment of Body Structure.' Current literature provides little direction to its evaluation and management, and the importance to differentially diagnose the causes of foot drop. Therefore, the purpose of this case report is to describe the application of chiropractic manipulative therapy, for a 14-year-old femal
