Racial differences in levels of serum lipids and effects of exposure to persistent organic pollutants on lipid levels in residents of Anniston, Alabama.

Serum lipid levels are major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. In addition to diet, exercise, genetics, age and race, serum concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) influence concentrations of serum lipids. We investigated associations between fasting concentrations of 35 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and nine organochlorine pesticides in relation to total serum lipids, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and triglycerides in 525 Caucasian and African American residents of Anniston, Alabama, wh

Associations between Pre-Disease Biomarkers of Persistent Organic Pollutants and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Survival in the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health Study Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by the degeneration of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Most patients survive 3 to 5 years after diagnosis, although some live 10 years or more. Prognostic factors are incompletely understood, but previous case-control studies suggest that exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) may be associated with ALS survival, but this has not been explored within prospective analysis of POP biomarkers. In this study, we aimed to prospectively investigate the relationship between exposure

A community-engaged randomized controlled trial assessing the effectiveness of a weight loss aid in reducing the body burden of persistent organic pollutants.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) can impact human health and have multigenerational consequences. These chemicals are particularly concerning because they accumulate in adipose tissue and are eliminated slowly, leading to prolonged internal exposure and potential long-term health effects. METHODS: To assess whether a weight loss aid could reduce the body burden of POPs, we conducted a community-engaged randomized, quadruple-blind, placebo-controlled trial in a population highly exposed to a brominated flame retardant, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB). Blood samples, a

Maternal exposure to a human based mixture of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) affect gene expression related to brain function in mice offspring hippocampus.

Male and female mice pups were exposed to a low and high dose of a human relevant mixture of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) during pregnancy and lactation. Most compounds detected in the dams were found in offspring brains. The mice offspring exhibited changed expression of hippocampal genes involved in cognitive function (Adora2a, Auts2, Crlf1, Chrnb2, Gdnf, Gnal, Kcnh3), neuroinflammation (Cd47, Il1a), circadian rhythm (Per1, Clock), redox signalling (Hmox2) and aryl hydrocarbon receptor activation (Cyp1b1). A few genes were differentially expressed in males versus females. Mostly, sim

Maternal exposure to a mixture of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) affects testis histology, epididymal sperm count and induces sperm DNA fragmentation in mice.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are widespread throughout the environment and some are suspected to induce reproductive toxicity. As animals and humans are exposed to complex mixtures of POPs, it is reasonable to assess how such mixtures could interact with the reproductive system. Our aim is to investigate how maternal exposure to a mixture of 29 different persistent organic pollutants, formulated to mimic the relative POP levels in the food basket of the Scandinavian population, could alter reproductive endpoints. Female mice were exposed via feed from weaning, during pregnancy and lact

Maternal factors associated with plasma concentrations of endocrine-disrupting persistent organic pollutants including PFAS among Hispanic women from pregnancy to the post-delivery period.

OBJECTIVE: Upon exposure, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) accumulate in the body. One-time point measurement of POPs plasma concentrations can reflect body burden. This study aimed to assess whether maternal factors including age, breastfeeding, and weight, influence changes in plasma concentrations of POPs in women during critical periods of physical changes from pregnancy to 15-60 months after delivery. METHODS: Ninety-nine self-identified Hispanic women who were diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and originally enrolled in the GDM cohort study in 1993-1995 were include

Temporal trends (1968-2019) of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in seabird eggs from the northeast Pacific: Is it finally twilight for old POPs?

Legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as organochlorine pesticides (OCs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), are known to persist in the marine environment; however, whether concentrations of these POPs have decreased or stabilized from Canada's Pacific coast in recent years is unclear. Here, we examined temporal trends of various legacy POPs in the eggs of five seabird species; two cormorants (Nannopterum auritum and Urile pelagicus), an auklet (Cerorhinca monocerata), a murrelet (Synthliboramphus antiquus), and a storm-petrel (Hydrobates leucorhous), sampled 1968 to 2019 from 2

Pop, heavy metal and the blues: secondary analysis of persistent organic pollutants (POP), heavy metals and depressive symptoms in the NHANES National Epidemiological Survey.

OBJECTIVES: Persistent environmental pollutants, including heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), have a ubiquitous presence. Many of these pollutants affect neurobiological processes, either accidentally or by design. The aim of this study was to explore the associations between assayed measures of POPs and heavy metals and depressive symptoms. We hypothesised that higher levels of pollutants and metals would be associated with depressive symptoms. SETTING: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). PARTICIPANTS: A total of 15 140 eligible people were include

Modeling of a short-path distillation process to remove persistent organic pollutants in fish oil based on process parameters and quantitative structure properties relationships.

A factorial experimental design based on temperature, feed rate and addition of "working fluid" (WF; fatty acid ethyl esters) was used to model a short-path distillation process applied for removal of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in fish oil. Decontamination effect was assessed by measuring the level of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) and polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs). The average reduction in chemical concentration of the individual PCDD, PCDF, DL-PCB and PBDE congeners was linearly dependent on the

Persistent organic pollutants exposure in newborn dried blood spots and infant weight status: A case-control study of low-income Hispanic mother-infant pairs.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are believed to alter metabolic homeostasis during fetal development, leading to childhood obesity. However, limited studies have explored how fetal chemical exposures relate to birth and infant weight outcomes in low-income Hispanic families at the highest risk of obesity. Therefore, we sought to determine associations between neonatal POPs exposure measured in newborn dried blood spots (DBS) and prenatal diet quality, birth weight, and overweight status at 18 months old. We conducted a case-control study nested within the Starting Early Program randomized

Potential association between exposure to legacy persistent organic pollutants and parasitic body burdens in Indo-Pacific finless porpoises from the Pearl River Estuary, China.

A high prevalence of infectious diseases (mostly lungworms) is found in finless porpoises (genus Neophocaena) in the coastal waters of China, which is one of the most dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT)-polluted areas worldwide, while its association with contaminant exposure remains undetermined. To address this gap, we investigated blubber levels of polychlorinated diphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Indo-Pacific finless porpoises (Neophocaena phocaenoides) stranded in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) of China. In the post-mortem examinat

[Determination of n-octanol/water partition coefficients for persistent organic pollutants by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography with dual-point retention time correction].

n-Octanol/water partition coefficients (logKow) for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) have been determined by a modified method of reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). A dual-point retention time correction (DP-RTC) was used to rectify chromatographic retention time (tR) shift resulted from stationary phase aging and so on. Based on this correction, the relationship model between logKow and logk(w)

Using chorioallantoic membranes for non-lethal assessment of persistent organic pollutant exposure and effect in oviparous wildlife.

David Peakall and co-workers pioneered innovative approaches that utilized extra-embryonic membranes to assess accumulation of organochlorine pesticides in eggs. This technique provided the foundation for an entire line of research to improve non-lethal methods for assessing contaminant exposure in oviparous wildlife. Currently, analysis of chorioallantoic membranes (CAMs) provides predictable estimates of chlorinated contaminant presence in eggs and in maternal tissues. Field studies have been conducted with herons, stilts, alligators, crocodiles, and sea turtles. Controlled dose-response stu

Factors affecting multiple persistent organic pollutant concentrations in the air above Japan: A panel data analysis.

Numerous reports have elucidated different statistical approaches to identify temporal trends in atmospheric persistent organic pollutant (POP) time series. However, the correlation of industrial activity with concentrations of atmospheric POPs in Japan has not yet been determined. Herein, a panel data analysis of a 16-year monitoring program (2003-2018) conducted by the Japanese Ministry of Environment was used to investigate a range of POPs in the atmosphere above Japan. This work focuses on polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, a persistent organic pollutant, inhibits iodide accumulation by thyroid follicular cells in vitro.

Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) reported to alter thyroid function. Iodide uptake by thyroid follicular cells, an early step in the synthesis of thyroid hormones, is a potential target for thyroid disruption by EDCs. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the acute effects of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctane carboxylic acid (PFOA), two of the most abundant PFAS in the environment, on iodide transport by thyroid follicular cells in vitro. Dynamic changes in intracellular iodide concentration were monit

Fe-N co-doped highly graphitized biochar for peroxymonosulfate activation toward the degradation of persistent organic pollutants: Critical roles of singlet oxygen and electron transfer.

Herein, Fe-N co-doped highly graphitized biochar catalyst, which exhibits high catalytic activity toward peroxymonosulfate, was successfully synthesized via a simple one-pot pyrolysis method and applied for the efficient degradation of persistent organic pollutants. The co-doping of iron and nitrogen markedly increased the graphitization degree of the material, thereby enhancing peroxymonosulfate activation and achieving complete degradation of bisphenol A at an initial concentration of 20 mg/L within 40 min, which significantly outperformed other non-doped catalysts.
