Personality Disorders and Psychological Functioning Among Latina Women with Eating Disorders.

Little is known about personality disorders (PD) and comorbidities among Latinas with eating disorders (ED). The dysregulation and chronicity of PDs can complicate and augment the symptomatology of EDs. This set of analyses provides a preliminary examination of PD and psychopathology in a sample of Latina women with ED. Participants (N = 34) were administered the Structured Clinical Interview for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Eating Disorders Examination, and Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III to assess personality pathology, and questionnaires (Beck Depression Inventory-II and

Treating Patients With Comorbid Eating Disorders and Personality Disorders: A Rationale.

Eating disorders (ED) have heightened risk for both psychiatric and medical complications, and they require more effective psychological interventions, in light of evidence saying that treatment response is often incomplete, and attrition is significant. One possible avenue to improve treatment effectiveness is address the frequent co-occurrence with personality disorders (PD). When persons suffer from both ED and PD they would present with complex manifestations and serious interpersonal problems. In parallel, their capacity to form a solid working alliance can be limited. They are likely to

It's time to replace the personality disorders with the interpersonal disorders.

Personality disorders (PDs) are among the most common and severe classes of psychopathology. From a clinical perspective, it is challenging to help individuals with personality disorders because treatment ruptures, discontinuation, reversals, and failures are relatively common. An additional clinical challenge is that the model used to diagnose personality disorders is demonstrably incorrect. Recent efforts to improve diagnosis of personality disorders apply two criteria: the first distinguishes personality disorders from other kinds of psychopathology and the second distinguishes different ty

The comorbidity of personality disorders in eating disorders: a meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: The present meta-analysis summarized the proportion of comorbid personality disorders (PDs) in patients with anorexia (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), respectively, and examined possible moderating variables. METHODS: A search of the databases PsychINFO, Embase, and Medline for the period 1980-2016 identified 87 studies from 18 different countries. RESULTS: The mean proportion of PDs among patients with any type of eating disorder (ED) was .52 compared to .09 in healthy controls. There were no statistically significant differences between AN (.49) and BN (.54) in proportions of any PD

Do eating disorders co-occur with personality disorders? Comparison groups matter.

OBJECTIVE: To assess and compare lifetime rates of occurrence of eating disorders (ED) with four Axis II personality disorders (PD) and with major depressive disorder (MDD) without PD. The eating disorders met criteria outlined in the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). METHOD: Six hundred sixty-eight patients recruited for the Collaborative Longitudinal Personality Disorders Study (CLPS) were reliably assessed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders and the Diagnostic Interview for DSM-IV Personality Disorders. If personality disorder is just maladaptive traits, there is no such thing as personality disorder.

The diagnosis of personality disorder (PD) is undergoing a transition from a categorical model that distinguishes types from one another to a model that characterizes patients with dimensional profiles. The DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th ed.) alternative model of personality disorder (AMPD) and the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (11th ed.) have two primary criteria: the first is a dimension that differentiates PD from both normal personality and other kinds of disorder, can be used to indicate the overall leve

Rethinking the comparison of borderline personality disorder and multiple personality disorder.

This article has made a number of points that assert what is today a minority position within the fields of MPD/DID and BPD. We hope our views will stimulate attempts by others to rethink their positions and test our assertions, so that issues surrounding these two disorders can be sharpened. For the sake of the clarity of future work, we summarize in outline form the essence of our viewpoint. 1. BPD and MPD/DID have similar appearing symptoms, such as identity problems, unstable affect modulation, self-destructive behaviors, chaotic impulse control, and troubled interpersonal relationships, b

Personality functioning in bipolar 1 disorder and borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Differentiation of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and bipolar I disorder (BD) has been challenging. The assessment of shared symptoms in the context of the overall personality functioning, the patient's sense of self, and the quality of his object (interpersonal) relations is proposed to be valuable for the differential diagnosis of these disorders. METHODS: We empirically investigated the level of personality organization (PO), identity integration, and quality of object relations in patients suffering from BD or BPD using the Structured Interview of Personality Organizati

A Network Perspective on the Comorbidity of Personality Disorders and Mental Disorders: An Illustration of Depression and Borderline Personality Disorder.

The comorbidity of personality disorders and mental disorders is commonly understood through three types of theoretical models: either a) personality disorders precede mental disorders, b) mental disorders precede personality disorders, c) mental disorders and personality disorders share common etiological grounds. Although these hypotheses differ with respect to their idea of causal direction, they all imply a latent variable perspective, in which it is assumed that either personality and mental disorders are latent variables that have certain causal relations [models a) and b)]; or that, as

Differences in personality functioning impairment in mood, anxiety, and personality disorders: a cluster analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders and the latest eleventh version of the International Classification of Diseases implement the level of impairment in self and interpersonal personality functioning (Level of Personality Functioning Scale - LPFS) as a core feature of personality pathology. However, some studies have indicated that personality functioning is also impaired in other mental disorders, but a more thorough exploration is missing. Thus, this study aims to develop profiles of levels of personality functioning in people with personality disorders and some

[Affective phases in dynamics of personality disorders (on a model of borderline personality disorder)].

Affective phases developing in personality disorder (index-sample--98 patients) were compared to those in cyclothymia (85 patients--control group). A preference of phase dynamics in the group of abnormalities relating to ICD-10 item "Borderline personality disorder" was confirmed. In line with a concept considering personality disorders as clinical syndromes, patients of the index-group have personality disorders with the signs of psychopathological diathesis determined by vulnerability to affective disorders. Affective phases are interpreted not only as an expression of a specific type of per

Personality, temperament, and character dimensions and the DSM-IV personality disorders in substance abusers.

The authors evaluated the relationship between P. T. Costa and R. R. McCrae's (1992) NEO 5-factor model, C. R. Cloninger's (1993) 7-factor Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), and the American Psychiatric Association's (1994) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th ed., personality disorders in 370 inpatient and outpatient alcohol, cocaine, and opiate abusers. NEO Neuroticism was associated with many disorders, and different patterns for Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Extraversion emerged for the different disorders. Several TCI scales were associated with diffe

Changes in the classification of personality disorders: Comparing the DSM-5 Section II personality disorder model to the alternative model for personality disorders using structured clinical interviews.

The current study examined the continuity of personality disorder (PD) diagnoses from Section II to Section III (alternative model for personality disorders [AMPD]) when using structured interviews. We investigated the continuity both in terms of stability of prevalence rates and in terms of convergent validity. A clinical sample of 189 participants were concurrently administered both Section II PD and AMPD interviews for diagnosing PD by 2 independent interviewers. Stability of prevalence between the models for specific PD diagnoses was generally supported. A higher prevalence of trait-specif

Personality disorders and outcome after multidisciplinary pain therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Interdisciplinary treatment programmes are the gold standard for patients suffering from chronic pain. However, several patient-related factors seem to influence the patients' outcome. The aim of our study was to inquire whether patients with personality disorders (PD) might benefit less from an interdisciplinary treatment programme compared to patients without PD. METHODS: A prospective, observational study with chronic pain patients attending a 5-week interdisciplinary treatment programme was performed. Main outcome parameters were psychological stabilization and pain intensity

Hypnotizability and psychopathology of patients with personality disorders.

Assessment of hypnotizability is useful in research and predicting the effects of hypnosis in clinical practice. There are few contemporary scientific reports examining the relationship between hypnotizability and psychopathological personality dimensions. The current study explores the connections between abnormal personality in psychiatric patients and the hypnotizability level. Fifty-five patients with anxiety and personality disorders who previously completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) were invited to undergo the Elkins Hypnotizability Scale - Clinical Form

Future Challenges in Psychotherapy Research for Personality Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Individuals with personality disorders are frequently seen in mental health settings. Their symptoms typically reflect a high level of suffering and burden of disease, with potentially harmful societal consequences, including costs related to absenteeism at work, high use of health services, ineffective or harmful parenting, substance use, suicidal and non-suicidal self-harming behavior, and aggressiveness with legal consequences. Psychotherapy is currently the first-line treatment for patients with personality disorders, but the study of psychotherapy in the domain of perso
