Preserving identity through caregiving: A systematic review and meta-synthesis of minority informal caregivers' experiences caring for older adults with neurological conditions.

Neurological conditions, including dementia, Parkinson's disease, and stroke, are rising globally, increasing reliance on informal caregivers, particularly within ethnic minority communities. However, little is known about these caregivers' experiences in the European context. This review aimed to explore how ethnic minority informal caregivers construct meaning around and navigate their caregiving roles. A systematic search of four electronic databases in August 2024 identified 18 qualitative studies involving 258 caregivers from the UK (n = 14), Norway (n = 2), the Netherlands (n = 1), and G

The pre-Roe legal framework: a dissecting study of the evolution of abortion laws and their socio-legal implications.

INTRODUCTION: The historical evolution of abortion laws in the United States reflects significant shifts in societal attitudes and legal frameworks, particularly concerning reproductive rights and maternal consent. Prior to Roe v. Wade, abortion was largely criminalised, but gradual changes in public opinion and legislation paved the way for liberalised abortion laws. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the legal and societal developments shaping abortion laws in the United States from the early 19th century to the pre-Roe era, focusing on the interplay between public opinion and legislativ

Reflechi twòp--thinking too much: description of a cultural syndrome in Haiti's Central Plateau.

A rich Haitian ethnopsychology has been described, detailing concepts of personhood, explanatory models of illness, and links between mind and body. However, little research has engaged explicitly with mental illness, and that which does focuses on the Kreyòl term fou (madness), a term that psychiatrists associate with schizophrenia and other psychoses. More work is needed to characterize potential forms of mild-to-moderate mental illness. Idioms of distress provide a promising avenue for exploring common mental disorders. Working in Haiti's Central Plateau, we aimed to identify idioms of dist

The impact of the Dobbs decision on in-vitro fertilization and fertility care.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The 2022 Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs vs Jackson marks a frightening new reality in America. Physicians and patients have been left confused and concerned regarding the broader implications of this ruling. Now that the constitutional right to an abortion has been overturned and the power has been relinquished to individual states, there is justifiable concern regarding the impact on in-vitro fertilization (IVF). This review explores the ways IVF and fertility care are at risk in the context of our new reality. RECENT FINDINGS: The decision to overturn the right to an abort

"They're always in a hurry" - Older people´s perceptions of access and recognition in health and social care services.

The article examines older people's perceptions of quality of life from the perspective of access and use of health and social care services. The data include focus group discussions with older people living alone. The data were analysed using thematic analysis focusing on the older people's collective views on health and social care services as supportive or restrictive factors for their quality of life. Two central themes were present in all the focus group discussions: the importance of accessing services and information regarding the services, and need for recognition within the services/b

We Got Your Back! Help Care Seeking and Caregiving in Mexican Indigenous Men With Ankylosing Spondylitis.

This article presents a study on the care provided by 11 men from different ethnic, health, and socioeconomic backgrounds to two indigenous Rarámuri males with ankylosing spondylitis. This chronic muscular and bone disease is known to evolve progressively, causing disability and immense suffering to the affected individual. Through anthropological research involving ethnographic description and interviews conducted in an urban setting of the City of Chihuahua in the state of Chihuahua, caring practices performed by men that contest prior assumptions about how men relate to each other in relati

Parenting work and autism trajectories of care.

This study investigates the work and care associated with raising a child with disabilities in the United States. Based on in-depth interviews with parents who have a child with autism, it develops the notion of parenting work and trajectories of care to investigate how parents navigate and coordinate the challenges of getting an autism diagnosis, obtaining educational services, and re-contextualising the possibilities for the future. I argue that parents embody a complex mix of love, hope, and responsibility in parenting work and trajectories of care that expands temporal and social elements

Protecting Future Children from In-Utero Harm.

The actions of pregnant women can cause harm to their future children. However, even if the possible harm is serious and likely to occur, the law will generally not intervene. A pregnant woman is an autonomous person who is entitled to make her own decisions. A fetus in-utero has no legal right to protection. In striking contrast, the child, if born alive, may sue for injury in-utero; and the child is entitled to be protected by being removed from her parents if necessary for her protection. Indeed, there is a legal obligation for health professionals to report suspected harm, and for authorit

Older people living alone at home with terminal cancer.

This study describes the lived experiences of older people coping with terminal cancer and living alone, focusing on how they face challenges of the biographical life changes from their disease progression. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted in two phases with palliative care clients of a community-based service in Western Australia (2009-2011): Brief interviews with 43 cancer patients who live alone and then in-depth interviews with 8 of them. Using biographical disruption as the analytical framework for interpreting the qualitative data, four main themes emerged: Biograph

Unseen, Ungrieved: Idiocy and the Architecture of Exclusion in Eugenic Institutions.

This essay reexamines institutional segregation during the eugenics era by centering the experiences of individuals labeled "low-grade" or "unimprovable," who have been largely excluded from both public life and historical memory. While scholarship on eugenics has emphasized sterilization, immigration restriction, and the politics of heredity, it has paid comparatively little attention to how significant intellectual disability was discursively and materially constructed within custodial institutions governed by medical and administrative authority. The essay argues that the figure of the "idi

Artificial intelligence for relational reconnection and social support in Alzheimer's disease: a conceptual framework for socially embedded systems.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) has traditionally been approached through a biomedical lens, focusing on neurodegenerative markers such as amyloid-β plaques and tau protein accumulation. However, clinical evidence increasingly demonstrates that social dysfunction, which includes identity confusion, emotional withdrawal, and breakdowns in social roles. This article reconceptualizes AD as a disorder in which the primary dimension of decline lies in social relationship management capacity (SRMC), while recognizing that neurobiological and cognitive deterioration remain integral to its manifestation and

Reviving the forgotten: breathing life into urban wastelands through skateboarding and decolonial placemaking in Nairobi, Kenya.

Skateboarding in Nairobi, Kenya, offers young people ways of asserting subjectivity, reimagining the city through movement, care, and shared presence. Based on semi-structured interviews, field observations, and sensory ethnography, this study traces how skateboarders transform overlooked sites-plazas, rooftops, and improvised parks-into spaces of community building, ecological care, and affective belonging. Grounded in decolonial thought, Indigenous teachings, and feminist ethics of care, the analysis frames skateboarding as a collective practice through which personhood is shaped, care for c

Understanding rehabilitation and support needs after an episode of delirium: a qualitative thematic analysis of interviews with older people with delirium, family carers and healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is linked to adverse outcomes in older adults and independently increases the risk of developing or worsening dementia. While most research focuses on acute-phase management, long-term recovery remains poorly understood. This study explores post-discharge trajectories through a qualitative investigation of the perceived home rehabilitation and support needs of older adults following delirium. METHODS: A thematic analysis approach was used to investigate the perceived home rehabilitation needs of older people who experienced delirium during hospital admission. Semistructur

Conceptual issues in 'cognitive impairment'.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to set out the recent writings relevant to acquired cognitive impairment in an attempt to reveal some of the underlying conceptual issues. RECENT FINDINGS: The huge strides being taken to diagnose Alzheimer's and other dementias early, including pre-symptomatically, raise important ethical issues. But there are broader conceptual issues too, around the notion of normal ageing. New techniques, such as deep brain stimulation, raise further ethical concerns, but may be relevant to deeper philosophical issues. Meanwhile, capacity continues to be of interest to

The Impairment Argument and Future-Like-Ours: A Problematic Dependence.

In response to criticism of the impairment argument for the immorality of abortion, Bruce Blackshaw and Perry Hendricks appeal to Don Marquis's future-like-ours (FLO) account of the wrongness of killing to explain why knowingly causing fetal impairments is wrong. I argue that wedding the success of the impairment argument to FLO undermines all claims that the impairment argument for the immorality of abortion is novel. Moreover, I argue that relying on FLO when there are alternative explanations for the wrongness of causing FAS begs the question. I conclude, therefore, that the impairment argu
