An investigation of managed health care case managers.

Managed care case management is a relatively new concept within health and rehabilitation. As such, it lacks both definition and profiles of those providing services. This paper constructs a definition of managed care case management and presents the detailed results of a survey that identified the characteristics of case managers in the Midwest. The survey was mailed to 250 subjects. The respondents of the survey (N = 56) were relatively young (the largest number of respondents were 30 to 39 years of age), relatively new to their jobs (means = 2.2 years), and were typically employed full-time

Global Research Trends in ICU Nursing Personnel: A Bibliometric Analysis (2001-2025).

BACKGROUND: With an aging population, increasing patient complexity, and rising health care burdens in the postpandemic era, ICU nursing personnel research is growing in importance. However, systematic analyses of its knowledge structure, thematic evolution, and international collaboration models remain lacking. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we used bibliometric methods to analyze trends, knowledge structures, and collaborative networks in global ICU nursing personnel research from 2001 to 2025. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science Core Collection, and Scopus for ICU nursing literature fr

Navigating emotions, communication, and pain during prehospital labour: a mixed-methods survey with emergency ambulance services.

INTRODUCTION: Despite their crucial role in prehospital obstetric emergencies, there is little research exploring emergency medical service (EMS) personnel's perspectives and attitudes on out-of-hospital births, including balancing the numerous needs of the patient. Our aims were to (1) identify how EMS demographics and professional experience related to their confidence and comfort in treating a patient in labour and (2) explore EMS' perspectives on managing emotional needs and administering analgesia in a labour and birth setting in New Zealand (NZ). METHODS: This mixed-methods survey invit

Tropical skin diseases in British military personnel.

Skin complaints are common in travellers to foreign countries and are responsible for up to 25% of medical consultations by military personnel during deployments in the tropics. They also have relatively high rates of field hospital admission, medical evacuation and referral to UK Role 4 healthcare facilities. Non-infectious tropical skin diseases include sunburn, heat rash, arthropod bites, venomous bites, contact dermatitis and phytophotodermatitis. During tropical deployments skin infections that commonly occur in military personnel may become more frequent, severe and difficult to treat. S

An algorithm for the evaluation and management of red, yellow, and green zone patients during a botulism mass casualty incident.

Botulinum toxin is one of the most toxic substances known to humankind. It is one among the six Category A agents in the CDC bioterrorism lexicon. This suggests that, while the possibility of a botulism mass casualty incident (MCI) is remote, its unique acute and long-term ramifications must be addressed and planned for. However, an in-depth knowledge of the disease and its tactical management in the acute MCI phase is inconsistent or superficial among healthcare personnel. Therefore, an algorithm has been developed to assist first receivers with the initial management of multiple probable and

[Cross sectional study of odontological incidences on board the spanish Navy flagship Juan Carlos I during its first international peacekeeping mission].

OBJECTIVE: Oral health is an essential component of the general well-being and quality of life of the population. In Spain, access to dental services and emergency dental care for civilians is relatively straightforward. However, this is not the case for military personnel, especially those deployed on Navy ships that lack dental capabilities and in isolated areas where access to specialized healthcare services is complex and risky. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and management of dental pathology among Spanish military personnel aboard the LHD 61 Juan Carlos I during its

Risk management in pregnancy termination.

This chapter reminds those who provide abortion services that crises are inevitable in the medical, counselling and administrative areas of the facility. After more than 10 years of providing safe, legal abortions, the author notes that the different types of crises that occur are already known and that it is possible to prepare for them. Indeed, it is necessary to prepare for a crisis before it occurs. The essence of crisis management is to: (a) identify each possible crisis and prepare a plan to cope with it, (b) train personnel to avert and/or manage a crisis, and to be sure that this train

Management of infections in hospital employees.

Hospital employees are often exposed to infectious diseases, both within and outside of the hospital. Susceptible personnel are at risk of acquiring infection and are a possible source of infection for patients, other employees and members of their households. In recent years epidemics in hospitals due to rubella, pertussis, hepatitis B and Legionnaires' disease have included infection transmitted to and from personnel. A comprehensive plan for management of hospital personnel exposed to communicable diseases should include the following: (1) protocols for the management of each of the common

Emotional Burden and Selfcare Strategies Among Opioid Overdose Prevention and Response Personnel in Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties, Wisconsin, USA: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid prevention personnel who interface with overdose events are at a risk of emotional challenges, though little research has explored their emotional experiences and self-care strategies. We explored the emotional experiences and self-care strategies to manage mental and emotional challenges among individuals who work in overdose prevention and response. METHODS: This was a qualitative study. Using a phenomenological approach, we conducted in-depth key informant interviews (KIIs) with forty-six purposively selected opioid overdose prevention and response personnel from Augus

Malignant hyperthermia crisis: optimizing patient outcomes through simulation and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a rare, life-threatening event. Many clinicians are unprepared to manage an MH crisis in the perioperative setting because it requires the use of low-frequency, high-risk skills and procedures. Simulation is a recognized educational method for cumulative and integrative learning in a safe environment that resembles real-life clinical scenarios. The aim of this quality improvement project was to provide simulation-based learning to perioperative personnel to educate them in the early recognition, treatment, and management of MH. An interdisciplinary team developed

A simple alopecia scoring system for use in colony management of laboratory-housed primates.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia in captive primates continues to receive attention from animal care personnel and regulatory agencies. However, a method that enables personnel to reliably score alopecia over time and under various conditions has proven difficult to achieve. METHODS: The scoring system developed by the behavioral and veterinary staffs at the Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC) uses the rule of 9s to estimate the percentage of the body affected with alopecia (severity) and how the alopecia presents itself (pattern). Training and scoring can conveniently be managed using p

When a drip becomes a flood: Lessons learned from Target Corporation's first large-scale business disruption.

Business continuity practitioners routinely determine which teams in their companies are critical and undertake extensive and rigorous planning processes. But what happens when a business is faced with an unanticipated long-term disruption that primarily affects non-critical teams? How can a company use the essential principles of business continuity and crisis management in order to respond? This paper explores a 2013 business disruption experienced by Target Corporation at one of its headquarters locations caused by a leak in the water line for an ice machine. Challenges encountered and revi

Understanding why they don't see eye to eye: an examination of leader-member exchange (LMX) agreement.

Although it is an explicitly dyadic approach to leadership, some leader-member exchange (LMX) research has been characterized by relatively low levels of agreement between leader and member judgments of the relationship. Using a combination of meta-analytic methods and primary data collection, the authors sought to explore several theoretically and methodologically meaningful factors that might account for lower levels of agreement. On the basis of data from 64 independent samples (N = 10,884 dyads), the authors found that overall agreement was moderate in nature (? = .37). In addition, they f

Pain Management in People With Dementia Living in Nursing Homes: A Focused Ethnographic Study.

The literature on pain management for people with dementia in nursing homes places significant emphasis on the limitations dementia imposes on their ability to describe and express their pain. Little is known about how healthcare personnel can support and use the individual resources people with dementia have in pain management. Thus, this study aimed to explore pain management in people with dementia in nursing homes, focusing on the resources people with dementia have and how healthcare personnel can support and integrate these resources into their clinical practice. We applied an explorator

Secondary contamination of medical personnel, equipment, and facilities resulting from hazardous materials events, 2003-2006.

BACKGROUND: When not managed properly, a hazardous material event can quickly extend beyond the boundaries of the initial release, creating the potential for secondary contamination of medical personnel, equipment, and facilities. Secondary contamination generally occurs when primary victims are not decontaminated or are inadequately decontaminated before receiving medical attention. This article examines the secondary contamination events reported to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and offers suggestions for preventing such events. METHODS: Data from the ATSDR Ha

Wellbeing Among Police Personnel Investigating Online Child Sexual Abuse: A Scoping Review.

Online child sexual abuse (CSA) crimes have increased significantly in recent years, reflecting broader access to the internet and the global proliferation of CSA content. In response, national police forces have established specialized investigative teams. Notably, repeated exposure to CSA material has been identified as a significant stressor for police personnel, potentially increasing the risk of secondary traumatic stress and burnout. Therefore, understanding and addressing the impact of continuous CSA exposure on personnel's wellbeing is essential within this area of digital policing. Th
