Food insecurity in households with persons with disabilities in a situation of extreme vulnerability in Brazil: a secondary cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Inequities in access to education, work and health care are striking among persons with disabilities, making this population more vulnerable to poverty, lack of access to basic services and violation of rights such as access to food. Household food insecurity (HFI), marked by precarious income, has increased among persons with disabilities. In Brazil, the Continuous Cash Benefit (In Portuguese, Benefício de Prestação Continuada - BPC) is the guarantee of a minimum wage for persons with disabilities as a measure to promote social security and access to income in a situation of extre

Personal and sexual boundaries: the experiences of people with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Previous research shows that people with intellectual disabilities have less knowledge about sexual health and are more vulnerable to victimisation. In cases of sexual abuse, they are likely to encounter the criminal justice system as vulnerable witnesses. Several challenges arise when people with intellectual disabilities are in communication with the criminal justice system. We aimed to explore the perceptions, experiences and knowledge of people with intellectual disabilities regarding personal and sexual boundaries in order to identify factors relevant for preventing sexual abu

Assessment of dementia in a clinical sample of persons with intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of age-associated disorders has become increasingly important. METHODS: In a clinical setting, people with intellectual disability with and without dementia were assessed retrospectively using the Neuropsychological Test Battery (NTB) and the Dementia Questionnaire for People with Learning Disabilities (DLD) at two different times to analyse neuropsychological changes and diagnostic validity. One group (n = 44) was assessed with both instruments, while the DLD was applied in 71 patients. RESULTS: In the NTB (n = 44), only patients with dementia (n = 26) showed a declin

Wearable Sensors in Sports for Persons with Disability: A Systematic Review.

The interest and competitiveness in sports for persons with disabilities has increased significantly in the recent years, creating a demand for technological tools supporting practice. Wearable sensors offer non-invasive, portable and overall convenient ways to monitor sports practice. This systematic review aims at providing current evidence on the application of wearable sensors in sports for persons with disability. A search for articles published in English before May 2020 was performed on Scopus, Web-Of-Science, PubMed and EBSCO databases, searching titles, abstracts and keywords with a s

Persons with Intellectual Disability: Sexual Behaviour, Knowledge and Assertiveness.

BACKGROUND: Persons with ID most often have incomplete, contradictory and imprecise knowledge of sexuality and sexual intercourse itself. They are not provided with sufficient information on their own body and sexuality, and are often discouraged from and sanctioned for trying to sexually express themselves. Sexual abuse due to low sexual assertiveness is also common. AIM: The principal aim of this study was to establish the presence or absence of sexual activity in adults with ID residing in institutional housing, as well as the level and structure of their knowledge of sexuality, their sexu

Preventive strategies for aspiration pneumonia in elderly disabled persons.

Pneumonia is the fourth leading cause of death despite the availability of potent new antimicrobials in Japan. Aspiration of oropharyngeal bacterial pathogens to the lower respiratory tract is one of the most important risk factors for pneumonia. Impairments in swallowing and cough reflexes among disabled older persons, e.g., related to cerebrovascular disease, increase the risk of pneumonia. Thus, strategies to reduce the volumes and pathogenicity of aspirated material should be pursued. Since both swallowing and cough reflexes are mediated by endogenous substance P contained in the vagal and

Evaluation of the driving ability in disabled persons: a practitioners' view.

PURPOSE AND METHODS: The purpose of this paper is to present, on the basis of four genuine cases from the Rehabilitation Research Unit of Oulu University, the theoretical frame in which evaluations of driving ability of disabled persons can be made. RESULTS: First, it is not the operations with the control devices but the correct mental actions which the driver carries out with the help of the control devices which are crucial for safe driving. Second, driving ability is only partly a biomedical object of research and one ought to avoid an excessive medicalisation of an evaluation of driving

Factors influencing bone fractures in severely disabled persons.

OBJECTIVES: Factors affecting bone fracture in severely disabled persons were evaluated. DESIGN: Bone mineral density was measured, and the ratio against the average values in healthy subjects was calculated. Seventy-three subjects were selected from among 113 inpatients with severe mental and physical handicaps. The subjects were classified into four levels of mobility. RESULTS: Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the contribution of variables to the history of bone fracture. Age, medication of sodium valproate, and bone mineral density percentage were found to

Inclusion of persons living with disabilities in a district-wide sanitation programme: A cross-sectional study in rural Malawi.

Community-led total sanitation (CLTS) is embraced as a key strategy to achieve universal sanitation coverage (Sustainable Development Goal 6.2). Although inclusion is identified as a predictor of CLTS success, people living with disabilities are often excluded from community sanitation programmes and there is limited research exploring CLTS participation amongst people living with disabilities. This study aims to explore the extent to which people living with disabilities participated in a CLTS intervention delivered in rural Malawi using standard approaches. This cross-sectional study was con

Sexual lives and reproductive health outcomes among persons with disabilities: a mixed-methods study in two districts of Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: People with disabilities (PwDs) constitute a large and diverse group within the global population, however, their sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs are often neglected, particularly in low-and middle-income countries. This may result in adverse outcomes, such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), unintended pregnancies, and experience of interpersonal violence (IV). This study aimed to assess the factors that influence the sexual lives of PwDs in two districts of Ghana. METHODS: A sequential explanatory mixed-methods study design was used to collect data from PwDs.

ADEPT-CARE: A pilot, student-led initiative to improve care for persons with disabilities via a novel teaching tool.

BACKGROUND: Over one-quarter of United States adults live with a disability. Despite persistent ableism, defined as discrimination and prejudice against people with disabilities, in healthcare, disability-focused training remains largely absent from medical education. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to pilot and evaluate a novel teaching mnemonic (ADEPT-CARE) for performing a comprehensive history and physical exam for disabled patients. METHODS: In Spring 2022, first-year medical students at a suburban Mid-Atlantic institution could electively participate in a learning module that incl

Tacit knowledge in dyads of persons with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities and their caregivers: An interpretative literature study.

BACKGROUND: Caring for persons with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD) demands specific expertise. Tacit knowledge seems to play an important role, but little is known about its nature, including what is necessary for its development and transfer. AIM: To gain understanding of the nature and development of tacit knowledge between persons with PIMD and their caregivers. METHOD: We conducted an interpretative synthesis of literature on tacit knowledge in caregiving dyads with persons with PIMD, persons with dementia or infants. Twelve studies were included. RESULTS: Tacit

The perceived needs-access gap for health services among persons with disabilities in a rural area within South Africa.

Purpose: Health should be a universal phenomenon. However, little is known about the relationship between disability status and health issues - particularly in rural areas. This study looks at health issues of persons with disabilities in Madwaleni, a rural impoverished area in South Africa in 2011, and compares them to persons with no disabilities. Materials and Methods: Standardized questionnaires were used in the survey to assess disability and health status. The sample comprised of 773 individuals - 322 persons with disability and 451 comparisons (without disability) - covering 527 househo

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as a tobacco control tool in the mental health setting.

BACKGROUND: Smoking rates remain high among people with mental health conditions, even though smoking contributes to negative mental health outcomes and is a leading cause of mortality. Many mental health facilities are not covered by smoke-free laws or do not encourage smoking cessation, and people with mental health conditions are often targeted in tobacco industry promotions. OBJECTIVE: To analyse how the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), to which most countries are a Party, obliges State Parties to review policies and practices for tobacco control in the mental

From gaps to action: Possible strategies to address challenges in the assessment of specific learning disabilities and borderline intellectual functioning under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

In India, the rights of persons with disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, aims to ensure dignity, equality, and autonomy for persons with disabilities, and sets out guidelines for the assessment and certification of various disabilities. Among the disabilities covered under the Act, several critical gaps have been consistently noted in the assessment and certification of specific learning disabilities (SLD) and intellectual impairment-related conditions. These include the rigid application of intelligence quotient (IQ) criterion in SLD assessment, as well as the difficulties in evaluating adults who
