The present study was initiated to design and evaluate a sexual abuse prevention program for deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children. This evidence-based prevention program is the first of its kind for DHH children. A total of 92 DHH children aged 8-12 years participated in the program "STARK mit SAM" (Strong with Sam, SmS), a program conducted in primary schools for DHH children in Germany. The program evaluation consisted of a pretest-posttest design. As per class, the subjects were assigned to either the experimental or the wait list control group. Participants from both groups were pretest

We examined acquisition of grapheme-phoneme correspondences by 4 deaf and hard-of-hearing preschoolers using instruction from a curriculum designed specifically for this population supplemented by Visual Phonics. Learning was documented through a multiple baseline across content design as well as descriptive analyses. Preschoolers who used sign language and had average to low-average receptive vocabulary skills and varied speech perception skills acquired all correspondences after instruction. They were also able to use that knowledge while reading words. On a posttest, the children were able

The authors employed a scoping review to examine peer-reviewed journal articles published 2002-2020 focusing on adolescents who are deaf or hard of hearing and their self-reported identities. d/Deaf identity theory was explored in light of recent advances in developed countries, e.g., universal newborn hearing screening, increased access to mainstream school placements, and rising rates of cochlear implantation. Key themes were explored, including deafness acculturation, competing and complementary identities, and flexibility and fluidity. The results demonstrated that the way adolescents perc

Purpose Diagnoses, assessments, and treatments, as well as social and language interventions, can be effective in identifying and interpreting specific linguistic features that present special challenges to the language abilities of individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). This article reports on a study analyzing complex sentences and morphosyntactic error production by Arabic-speaking adolescents who are hearing and DHH. Method A total of 124 adolescents participated, all native speakers of Arabic in Grades 6-10 (63 hearing and 61 DHH). The participants were asked to provide an or

Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children born to hearing parents have profound theory-of-mind (ToM) delays, yet little is known about how providing hearing assistance early in life, through cochlear implants and hearing aids, influences their ToM development. We thus addressed (a) whether young DHH children with early hearing provision developed ToM differently than older children did in previous research and (b) what ToM understandings characterize this understudied population. Findings from 84 three- to six-year-old DHH children primarily acquiring spoken language demonstrated that accumulate

PURPOSE: In 2016 WHO launched the priority assistive products list (APL) consisting of 50 products and recommended that using this as a reference, countries should develop their own contextually relevant national APLs. This paper describes the development of Malawi's APL.
METHODS: Two hundred and ninety-six persons with disabilities participated in a rapid Assistive Technology Assessment (rATA) survey. Six focus group discussions (FGDs) with people with various types of disabilities were conducted. The rATA questionnaire and FGDs collected data on assistive products (APs) participants used, A

INTRODUCTION: Mathematical competencies are essential for both academic achievement and everyday functioning. Research investigating mathematical skills in deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) individuals has produced heterogeneous findings, indicating domain-specific performance patterns and the influence of linguistic and cognitive factors. Recent evidence further suggests that these differences may emerge early in development. This systematic review aims to evaluate mathematical competencies in DHH individuals and to contextualize their mathematical profile in relation to developmental dyscalculi

This study aims to examine emotion recognition and false belief performances of 4-5-year-old (48-71 months) deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) children. The performances have been assessed using the Turkish Version of the Theory of Mind Task Battery for Children. The DHH children have been continuing schooling in inclusive settings with an auditory-oral approach. The emotion recognition performances of hearing children (n = 100) and DHH (n = 100) children have appeared to be similar. The ANOVA analysis has revealed that the groups do not differ concerning false belief performances between the ages

For more than 20 years, two courses, History, Education, and Guidance of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Introduction to Instructional Methods for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, have been taught at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania using a traditional lecture format. A state grant provided funding to explore the use of technology to teach online courses to college-age learners who are deaf, hard of hearing, or hearing. Saba Centra software was used as the online tool for the synchronous presentation of course content, which included PowerPoint lecture material, text chat opportunities, sign langua

Hearing disability increases with hearing impairment and impairment increases with age, especially for persons over the age of 50 years. Older subjects also appear to display an excess disability, additional to that expected from impairment. This paper quantifies the excess disability and its dependence on sex and socio-economic factors. A variety of performance tests and a self-administered questionnaire concerning disability and handicap were conducted in 2,466 subjects aged between 17 and 80 years, although the actual tests varied amongst subjects. Performance tests included words in quiet

Deaf/deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) children are at an increased risk of developing mental health problems, with growing evidence that they may experience greater anxiety symptoms than hearing peers. The present study investigated whether Australian children with varying degrees of hearing loss experienced increased anxiety symptoms compared to hearing children. Furthermore, we examined whether child anxiety symptoms were associated with known risk factors including psychological symptoms of anxiety and depression in parents, age at detection, early intervention and device fitting, type of hear

The auditory scaffolding hypothesis states that early experience with sound underpins the development of domain-general sequence processing abilities, supported by studies observing impaired sequence processing in deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) children. To test this hypothesis, we administered a sequence processing task to 77 DHH children who use American Sign Language (ASL) and 23 hearing monolingual children aged 7-12 years and found no performance difference between them after controlling for age and nonverbal intelligence. Additionally, neither spoken language comprehension scores nor hear

Deaf and hard-of-hearing people utilize sign language recognition (SLR) to interconnect. Sign language (SL) is vital for hard-of-hearing and deaf individuals to communicate. SL uses varied hand gestures to speak words, sentences, or letters. It aids in linking the gap of communication between individuals with hearing loss and other persons. Also, it creates comfortable for individuals with hearing loss to convey their feelings. The Internet of Things (IoTs) can help persons with disabilities sustain their desire to attain a good quality of life and permit them to contribute to their economic a

The researchers examined the associations between thinking styles and grit. A cross-sectional design was adopted, with two weeks of data collection. The Thinking Styles Inventory-Revised II and the Grit Scale were administered to 365 signing deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) Arts and Design students and 443 hearing university students in mainland China. CFA, MANOVA, hierarchical multiple regression analyses, and a multi-group analysis were executed for data analysis. DHH and hearing students with Type I styles (i.e., more creativity-generating, less structured, and cognitively more complex) had hi

Recent studies suggest that benefiting early from both a cochlear implant (CI) and exposure to cued speech (CS, support system for the perception of oral language) positively impacts deaf children's speech perception, speech intelligibility, and reading. This study aims to show how: 1/CS-based speech perception ("cue reading"), and speech intelligibility might also constitute precise measures for determining the impact of CI and CS on deaf students' literary performance; 2/print exposure might also be a predictive factor in this equation. We conducted regression analyses to examine the impact

Limited access to spoken and signed language is a worldwide phenomenon affecting deaf children. Language delay caused by impeded language acquisition has negative cascading effects on deaf children's learning and development. In the event of stymied language development, deaf students exhibit highly errored writing and commit errors unseen in the writing of hearing students. There is a need for specialized tools to evaluate and monitor the progress of deaf students' written language in ways that can inform instruction. The Structured Analysis of Written Language (SAWL), developed for this purp

Responding to an article by Grushkin on how deaf children best learn to read, published, along with the present article, in an American Annals of the Deaf special issue, the authors review American Sign Language gloss. Topics include how ASL gloss enables deaf children to learn to read in their own language and simultaneously experience a transition to written English, and what gloss looks like and how it underlines deaf children's learning and mastery of English literacy through ASL. Rebuttal of Grushkin's argument includes data describing a deaf child's engagement in reading aloud (entirely
