Mental illness and participation in colorectal cancer screening: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Compared with the background population, persons with mental illness have increased colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality. Screening has the potential to alleviate the increased cancer mortality due to mental illness, but the extent to which persons with mental illness participate in CRC screening programs is uncertain. This scoping review aims to summarize the literature on CRC screening participation among persons with mental illness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched four databases (PubMed, PsychInfo, Embase, and the Cochrane Library) to identify published literature on mental i

Critiquing representations of intellectual disability in occupation-based literature.

BACKGROUND: Within and beyond occupation-based scholarship, concerns abound regarding the pervasiveness of discourses that promote a negative, deficit-based view of intellectual disability and associated consequences for disabled people's lives. Such representations risk reducing the complexities of human doing and being and can limit the occupational possibilities of this group. Yet, there is a lack of critically reflexive research exploring how disability is discursively constructed in occupation-based literature. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: This paper critically analyses representations of intellectu

Using a dual-task paradigm to investigate motor and cognitive performance in children with intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effects of dual-task (DT) constraints on walking performance in children with intellectual disability (ID). METHODS: Fifteen children with intellectual disability and fifteen age-matched typically developed children were asked to walk at a preferred speed: along a path (baseline condition), while carrying a glass of water and while quoting animal names. RESULTS: The present study findings showed that DTs affect walking performance of both typically developed children and those with intellectual disability. In children with inte

Ensuring the Reproductive Rights of Women with Intellectual Disability.

BACKGROUND: Women with intellectual disability experience disparities in sexual and reproductive health care services. METHODS: To explore perceptions of caring for persons with disability, including individuals with intellectual disability, we conducted open-ended individual interviews with 20 practicing physicians and three video-based focus group interviews with an additional 22 practicing physicians, which reached data saturation. Interviews were transcribed verbatim. We used conventional content analysis methods to analyse transcripts. RESULT: Physicians indicated that intellectual disa

Use of a UDL Literacy Environment by Middle School Students With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) has been shown to have benefits for students with disabilities. However, little is known about its potential to support literacy for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This qualitative study explored (a) to what extent students with IDD are able to use Udio, an online UDL literacy environment; and (b) how students with IDD experienced and perceived Udio. A grounded theory approach was used to analyze classroom observations, as well as teacher and student interviews. Electronic usage logs and student-produced discussions and proj

Inclusive E-Learning - Towards an Integrated System Design.

At first sight there seem to be issues combining technical accessibility guidelines and educational needs when designing inclusive E-Learning. Furthermore Universal Design for Learning seems to contradict individualization. In this paper we address both issues with an inclusive E-Learning design for the LAYA system, which targets disabled and non-disabled learners.

Pushing the boundaries of digital social contact: Experiences of people with disabilities and their social networks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people with intellectual disabilities living in care facilities could not receive visitors. Health authorities suggested the use of digital social contact as an alternative for in-person visits. We examined how people with intellectual disabilities living in care facilities experienced the use of digital social contact with their informal social network throughout 2020. Residents, their relatives, volunteer visitors, direct support staff, and care facility managers (N = 283) completed an online questionnaire, of whom 35 participated in an interview. Video cal

Exploring How People With Intellectual Disabilities Experience the Therapeutic Alliance: A 'Best Fit' Framework Analysis Using Bordin's Model.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing interest in therapeutic alliance within talking therapy for people with intellectual disability. The applicability of frameworks such as Bordin's (1979) model of therapy alliance has not been considered. METHOD: A review of qualitative literature on people with intellectual disability's experience of talking therapy identified 23 papers. A 'best fit' framework synthesis was used to explore the applicability of Bordin's model to the experiences of people with intellectual disability in therapy. RESULTS: The analysis supported Bordin's core themes of bond, ta

Judging Offenders With Intellectual Disabilities: Systematic Review of Criminal Justice System Professionals' Expressed Views and Attitudes Towards Offenders With Intellectual Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of an intellectual disability is suggested to have particularly stigmatising connotations, particularly within the criminal justice system (CJS). This paper aims to synthesise qualitative studies investigating the attitudes of CJS professionals to people with intellectual disabilities (PWID), specifically offenders with intellectual disabilities, and to appraise their methodological quality. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using PsychINFO, Web of Science, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL Complete and EThOS databases. Articles were screened for inclusion by title, a

Development of early numeracy skills in children with moderate intellectual disability.

This study assessed the effectiveness of a program aimed at improving the early numeracy skills of students with moderate intellectual disability. The persistence of the acquired skills and the program's impact on learning were monitored. Feedback from the students and their mothers was also gathered. Using a multiple-probe design across subjects, the results were visually presented through graphical analysis. Three male students aged 8-9 years participated. After obtaining high-reliability findings from reliability analyses, results showed the program effectively increased students' number sk

Better health care for people with learning disabilities.

Health care and health promotion are both integral parts of the health service of the 1990s. People with learning disabilities should have access to the same health services as all other members of society. Their specific needs should not prevent them from such access; rather, services should be provided that facilitate their participation. This paper highlights some factors that have prevented people with learning disabilities from having appropriate access to health-care and health promotion services. It also outlines the components which will help to redress the balance, including practical

Access to assistive technology for people with intellectual disabilities: a systematic review to identify barriers and facilitators.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organisation has launched a programme to promote Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology. Its aim is to increase access to high-quality affordable assistive products (AP) for everybody in need. People with intellectual disabilities (ID) are a specific group that could benefit from AP, but use less AP compared to their non-intellectual disabled peers. METHOD: A systematic literature search was carried out to identify barriers and potential facilitators for access to AP for people with ID globally. The search strategy terms were 'Intellectual Disability' and 'Ass

Behavioral interventions to reduce the pica of persons with developmental disabilities.

The consumption of nonfood items (i.e., pica) frequently occurs in persons with developmental disabilities. Pica may result in the puncture or blockage of the digestive tract, infestation by gastrointestinal parasites, and can interfere with an individual's daily learning, occupational performance, and quality of life. Twenty-six published studies have examined the efficacy of behavioral-intervention packages (e.g., differential reinforcement of other behavior, noncontingent attention, or overcorrection) on the pica of persons with developmental disabilities. This article reviews those studies
