Pre-Navigation via Interactive Audio Tactile Maps to Promote the Wellbeing of Visually Impaired People.

BACKGROUND: Pre-navigational tools can assist visually impaired people when navigating unfamiliar environments. Assistive technology products (eg tactile maps or auditory simulations) can stimulate cognitive mapping processes to provide navigational assistance in these people. OBJECTIVES: We compared how well blind and visually impaired people could learn a map presented via a tablet computer auditory tactile map (ATM) in contrast to a conventional tactile map accompanied by a text description objectives. METHODS: Performance was assessed with a multiple choice test that quizzed participants

Age related macular degeneration and visual disability.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of central blindness or low vision among the elderly in industrialized countries. AMD is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Among modifiable environmental risk factors, cigarette smoking has been associated with both the dry and wet forms of AMD and may increase the likelihood of worsening pre-existing AMD. Despite advances, the treatment of AMD has limitations and affected patients are often referred for low vision rehabilitation to help them cope with their remaining eyesight. The characteristic visual imp

An experimental study on target recognition using white canes.

To understand basic tactile perception using white canes, we compared tapping (two times) and pushing (two times) methods using the index finger and using a white cane, with and without accompanying auditory information. Participants were six visually impaired individuals who used a white cane to walk independently in their daily lives. For each of the tapping and pushing and sound or no sound conditions, participants gave magnitude estimates for the hardness of rubber panels. Results indicated that using a white cane produces sensitivity levels equal to using a finger when accompanied by audi

Visual impairment and dyslexia in childhood.

Although visual screening programs seem to be more and more effective, we face new problems with visual dysfunction that are not always detected in the visual screening programs. Many children born prematurely develop cerebral visual impairment. These children suffer from a cognitive visual impairment, causing them to have problems with orientation and visual perception. Brain impairment also seems to be relevant for the dyslexia syndrome, which continues to fascinate and puzzle many researchers. New findings in visual brain function cast light on these questions and might ultimately answer a

Breastfeeding Experiences of Mothers With Visual Impairment: A Scoping Review.

Breastfeeding rates are lower for women with disabilities than for women without disabilities, and women with visual impairment may be discouraged from breastfeeding by health professionals or their families. Little is known about how women with visual impairments learn to breastfeed and their breastfeeding experiences. The aim of this scoping review was to identify and map available evidence regarding the experiences and needs of mothers with visual impairment in initiating, establishing and maintaining lactation and breastfeeding, as well as to examine the extent of existing knowledge regard

Internet of things enabled indoor activity monitoring for visually impaired people with hybrid deep learning and optimized algorithms for enhanced safety.

Indoor activity monitoring methods promise the wellbeing and security of elderly and visually challenging individuals living in their homes. These methods use numerous technologies and sensors to monitor daily actions, namely movement, sleep patterns, and medication compliance, presenting valued opinions of the consumer's daily life and complete health. The accuracy and adaptability of the deep learning (DL) model make human activity recognition (HAR) a critical device to improve effectiveness, security, and modified understandings in indoor areas. Using DL techniques, HAR transforms indoor mo

A Navigation and Augmented Reality System for Visually Impaired People.

In recent years, we have assisted with an impressive advance in augmented reality systems and computer vision algorithms, based on image processing and artificial intelligence. Thanks to these technologies, mainstream smartphones are able to estimate their own motion in 3D space with high accuracy. In this paper, we exploit such technologies to support the autonomous mobility of people with visual disabilities, identifying pre-defined virtual paths and providing context information, reducing the distance between the digital and real worlds. In particular, we present ARIANNA+, an extension of A

Ocular trauma is an important cause of unilateral visual impairment worldwide. According to Nepal blindness survey (Brillinat et al, 1985), it accounted for 2.4% of blindness, and in another community based study (Upadhyay M et al, 2001), the prevalence of ocular trauma was observed to be 0.7%. The Bhaktapur Eye Study confirms that "corneal trauma leading to ulceration" is the second most common cause of blindness after cataract in Nepal.

Spontaneous facial expressions of emotion of congenitally and noncongenitally blind individuals.

The study of the spontaneous expressions of blind individuals offers a unique opportunity to understand basic processes concerning the emergence and source of facial expressions of emotion. In this study, the authors compared the expressions of congenitally and noncongenitally blind athletes in the 2004 Paralympic Games with each other and with those produced by sighted athletes in the 2004 Olympic Games. The authors also examined how expressions change from 1 context to another. There were no differences between congenitally blind, noncongenitally blind, and sighted athletes, either on the le

Scoping review: Mobility aids for people with sight loss across the ICF domains of functions, activities, and participation.

SIGNIFICANCE: There is little literature linking mobility aids for people with sight loss to the functions, activities, and participation domains of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Future studies on this relationship should be funded and pursued to better understand ways to maximize the benefit of mobility aids. PURPOSE: The ICF domains of functions, activities, and participation are potentially health-supporting aspects of daily living that may be impeded for people with sight loss. Although mobility aids facilitate safely navigating obstacles to

Toward a better understanding of barriers to wayfinding technology use for people with disabilities.

Wayfinding is the process of navigating from one's present location to their desired location. While wayfinding technologies are increasingly used by people with disabilities, there is little understanding of the barriers specific to wayfinding technology. The objective of this study was to understand the wayfinding technology barriers experienced by Canadians with disabilities. A total of 213 participants with varying disabilities (i.e. mobility, visual, hearing, memory and learning disabilities) completed a survey of open-ended questions about their personal experiences with different types
