Pesticide use in developing countries.

Chemical pesticides have been a boon to equatorial, developing nations in their efforts to eradicate insect-borne, endemic diseases, to produce adequate food and to protect forests, plantations and fibre (wood, cotton, clothing, etc.). Controversy exists over the global dependence on such agents, given their excessive use/misuse, their volatility, long-distance transport and eventual environmental contamination in colder climates. Many developing countries are in transitional phases with migration of the agricultural workforce to urban centres in search of better-paying jobs, leaving fewer peo

Pesticides and parkinsonism: is there an etiological link?

Two hundred years ago, Parkinson's disease was rare. Now, it is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. A recent twin study showed clearly that genetic factors play a minor role in determining whether an individual develops this disease, rekindling an interest in the etiological significance of environmental factors. Earlier studies had shown that a MPTP, a contaminant found in some illegal drugs, caused Parkinson's disease. This provided the original impetus for the pesticide hypothesis. Similarities between MPTP and pesticides coupled with epidemiological and animal studies have s

A test series for pesticide dermatitis.

A pesticide patch test series was tested in 200 subjects, 50 of whom were agricultural workers. Positive reactions to fungicides were found in 24, almost all to thiophthalimides, especially captan, difolatan and folpet. Reactions to bis-dithiocarbamates and benomyl were rare, and to other pesticides not significant.

Influence of pesticides on the growth of cyanobacteria.

Two unicellular and two filamentous cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) were exposed under conditions optimal for photoautotrophic growth to eleven pesticides. Low concentrations (0.01 to 5 ppm) of diuron, atrazine, and paraquat inhibited growth. With MCPA, MCPP, 2,4-D, milstem and ethrel, marked inhibitory effects were achieved only at concentrations above 100 ppm. Growth was inhibited by glyphosate, DDT, and thiram at intermediate concentrations. In some cases, the effective concentration of the pesticide varied considerably with the organism tested.

Homicidal Pesticide Poisoning - An Overview.

Pesticides are chemical or biological agents used to repel or kill pests. Pesticides are potent and lethal toxic substances that are also being infamously used for homicidal purposes due to their easy availability and rapid action. In this review, we look at 21 articles related to homicidal pesticide poisoning in the literature with an emphasis on fatal doses, routes of administration, and profiles of victims and perpetrators. Organophosphates and rodenticides were the most commonly used classes of pesticides, and ingestion was the most common route of administration; however, other modes of a

Review on Structures of Pesticide Targets.

Molecular targets play important roles in agrochemical discovery. Numerous pesticides target the key proteins in pathogens, insect, or plants. Investigating ligand-binding pockets and/or active sites in the proteins' structures is usually the first step in designing new green pesticides. Thus, molecular target structures are extremely important for the discovery and development of such pesticides. In this manuscript, we present a review of the molecular target structures, including those of antiviral, fungicidal, bactericidal, insecticidal, herbicidal, and plant growth-regulator targets, curre

Impact of pesticide exposure in childhood.

Pesticides represent a wide variety of chemicals presented as different formulations and concentrations and used in different settings: agriculture, animal sanitary bath, domestic use, and vector control. Lack of awareness, poor agricultural practices, and inappropriate disposal of containers will increase the exposure and risk of health effects during childhood. The concern about children's exposure to pesticides is based on their toxic properties and the special vulnerability to the exposure, which may occur in different stages, from the prenatal period to infancy. Pesticide related diseases

Animal Pesticide Poisoning in Tunisia.

During the period from 2014 to 2017, a retrospective study on pesticide poisoning in domestic animals and livestock was compiled and then analyzed. A total of 71 pesticide analyses have been submitted to the Pharmacy and Toxicology Laboratory of the School of Veterinary Medicine of Sidi Thabet in Tunisia. All the cases were first referred either through the clinical and/or pathological departments of the Veterinary School, the private and/or governmental veterinarians or directly by the pet owners. Among the total number of the suspected samples, 21 (29.6%) cases were found positive for variou

Agricultural Pesticide Use in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: The majority of farmers in Malawi use pesticides to protect their crops from pests. Without the use of pesticides, farmers would not be able to harvest significant yields. However, several studies worldwide have shown that some pesticides used by farmers are harmful to human health. Despite these studies, there remains a lack of proper documentation of the use and nature of harmful pesticides. OBJECTIVES: This retrospective study aimed to explore agricultural pesticides used in Malawi, to investigate factors that make Malawi vulnerable to illegal pesticide use, and to assess the e

Organophosphate pesticide exposure and neurodegeneration.

Organophosphate pesticides (OPs) are used extensively throughout the world. The main sources of contamination for humans are dietary ingestion and occupational exposures. The major concerns related to OP exposure are delayed effects following high level exposures as well as the impact of low level exposures during the lifespan which are suggested to be a risk factor for nervous system chronic diseases. Both high and low level exposures may have a particularly high impact in population subgroups such as aged or genetically vulnerable populations. Apart from the principle action of OPs which inv

Pesticide-associated pemphigus vulgaris.

We present a 40-year-old man with occupation-induced pemphigus vulgaris (PV). He developed PV within days of a one-time heavy exposure to fumes of burning glyphosate, a broad-spectrum nonselective pesticide. This exposure suggests acute cutaneous contact as a stimulus in the development of his pemphigus. While the patient initially required mycophenolate mofetil and prednisone therapy, he has since eliminated contact with pesticides and has been successfully tapered off systemic medication. We discuss the case and review concepts of inducible PV by pesticides and physical cutaneous injury.

Parkinson's disease and pesticide exposures.

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder in which loss of dopaminergic neurons in the basal ganglia leads to tremor, bradykinesia, rigidity and postural instability. METHODS: Literature search using Medline with keywords 'Parkinson's disease' and 'pesticides', limited to English, was undertaken, supplemented by articles from the author's files. RESULTS: Many studies have found an association between pesticides and PD, but no one agent has been consistently identified. Those implicated include organochlorine insecticides, maneb and paraquat. One meta-a

Pesticide exposure and women's health.

BACKGROUND: Research on pesticide-related health effects has been mostly focused in industrialized countries and in men. This paper discusses critical issues related to women's pesticide exposure and its effects on women's health. METHODS: The literature on pesticides was reviewed with emphasis on data related to women. Attention was focused on research suggesting different conditions of exposure or different response to pesticides by sex. Studies on cancer and reproductive effects were used as illustrative examples. RESULTS: Women are increasingly exposed to pesticides in developing countri

Trends of pesticide use in The Netherlands.

In 1991, a policy plan was adopted in the Netherlands, one of whose aims was a 50% reduction in pesticide use by 2000. The present paper surveys pesticide sales since 1974 and the use of such compounds in different crops per hectare as well as for the country as a whole. The results show that by the mid-1990s, pesticide consumption in kilogram terms had been reduced by about 50% compared to the mid-1980s. This reduction, however, was almost totally caused by the reduction in the use of soil disinfectants, while reduction targets for herbicides and fungicides were not met at all. Arable crops,

Pesticide residues in olive oil.

The attacks of pests and diseases and the presence of weeds make it necessary to apply pesticides to olive trees to ensure crop protection. Residues of these compounds may remain and contaminate the oil produced. For the analysis of pesticide residues in olive oil, the most common methods are multiresidue methods for fatty substrates, based on partitioning between hexane or light petroleum and acetonitrile. Recently, other methods have been applied, such as ready-to-use, disposable minicolumns or direct injection of oil into a capillary gas chromatograph equipped with a precolumn with an oil r
