In this study, the effect of strip intercropping green bean (GB), Phaseolus vulgaris L., with garlic (G), Allium sativum L., in three row ratios (3GB:5G, 3GB:8G and 3GB:11G) was assessed on two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch, compared with green bean sole crop over two growing seasons, in 2017 and 2018. The results indicated that intercrops reduced the densities of T. urticae eggs and mobile forms on the vegetative growth, the flowering, and the bean expansion stages of green bean plants compared with sole crop. In this study, seven predators of T. urticae including Steth

In the bean crop there are limited options of herbicides to control eudicotyledons weeds in pre-emergence and sulfentrazone presents potential to be used in a weed management program. The aim of this study was to determine the tolerance of a large number of Brazilian bean genotypes to sulfentrazone and their relation with morphophysiological characteristics, associating it to market classes, seed size and their center of origin. It was evaluated the effect of sulfentrazone application (400 g a.i. ha-1) in pre-emergence of 40 Brazilian bean genotypes, 36 of which were common-bean (Phaseolus vul

Silver (Ag) is highly toxic to aquatic organisms, including algae, invertebrate animals, and fish, but little information exists on Ag rhizotoxicity in higher plants. In two solution culture experiments with approximately 1,000 microM Ca(NO3)2 and 5 microM H3BO3 (pH 5.4), 20 to 80% of added Ag (< or =2 microM) was lost from solution within approximately 30 min, with a further decrease after 48 h root growth. Using measured Ag concentrations at the start of the experiments, the median effective concentration (EC50) for root elongation rate of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp. cv. Caloona) wa

Cyanide contents of locally purchased brown finger millet (Eleusine corocana L. Gaertner) and brown speckled kidney bean seeds (Phaseolus vulgaries var. Rose Coco) were determined using raw, germinated and autoclaved samples. The aim was to establish the extent of cyanide content increase resulting from the germination process and the effectiveness of the autoclaving process on the reduction of cyanide levels in the samples, for safety considerations. Autoclaving was carried out at 121degree C for 20 minutes. It was found that germination increased the cyanide content by 2.11 to 2.14 fold in f

Understanding the complex interactions between plants and herbivores is essential for improving crop resistance. Aiming to expand the role of cyanogenesis in plant defence, we investigated the response of the cyanogenic Phaseolus lunatus (lima bean) and the non-cyanogenic Phaseolus vulgaris (common bean) to Tetranychus urticae (spider mite) infestation. Despite mite infesting both legumes, leaf damage infringed by this feeder was reduced in lima bean. Comparative transcriptome analyses revealed that both species exhibited substantial metabolic and transcriptional changes upon infestation, alth

Seed priming and organic nutrient management are widely recognized strategies for improving seed germination and early seedling establishment; however, their combined effects on seed physiological quality in common bean remain insufficiently understood, particularly under controlled production systems. This study evaluated the effects of five fertilizer regimes (Control, Chemical, Organo-mineral, Cattle Manure, and Vermicompost) and eight seed-priming treatments (No priming, Hydropriming, Vermipriming, Cow Urine Priming, and their accelerated aging combinations) on germination and emergence pe

Modulating starch digestibility with natural ingredients is of interest for improving postprandial glycemic response. Here, a soluble broad bean hull fraction (SBBH), derived from an underutilized legume-processing byproduct, was evaluated for its effects on the in vitro hydrolysis of corn, potato, rice, pea, and wheat starches. SBBH markedly suppressed both the hydrolysis rate and final hydrolysis extent of all starches, with inhibition rates of 17.34%-27.01%, and primarily reduced the rapid hydrolysis phase, as reflected by the decrease in k1 from 0.43-0.52 to 0.05-0.12 min-1. The inhibitory

Red kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is widely cultivated and consumed globally. Exploring the effects of straw return and nitrogen fertilizer on the growth and yield of red kidney beans is essential for developing optimal straw return and nitrogen management practices to increase grain yield for food security. Field experiments were conducted for three consecutive years (2022-2024) to study the effects of two straw return methods and four nitrogen fertilization levels on the chlorophyll content, photosynthetic characteristics, dry matter accumulation, yield and its components of red kidney

Bean rust, caused by Uromyces appendiculatus, is one of the most critical diseases affecting common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) worldwide. Similarly, common bacterial blight, caused by Xanthomonas fuscans subsp. fuscans (Xff) and Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Xap), poses major threats to common bean production globally. While common bean exhibits limited natural resistance to these pathogens, tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolius A. Gray), a closely related species, has shown resistance to both rust and common bacterial blight. This study aimed to identify tepary beans resistant to rust a

Twelve specimens of resin-embedded human trabecular meshwork were probed with a panel of 21 biotinylated lectins, using an avidin-biotin peroxidase revealing system, in order to determine the normal pattern of saccharide expression in this tissue. High-mannose, intermediate and hybrid N-linked glycans, and complex N-linked bisected and non-bisected bi/tri-antennate glycans, as shown by the binding of Canavalia ensiformis (ConA), Pisum sativum (PSA), Lens culinaris (LCA) agglutinins and Phaseolus vulgaris erythroagglutinin (ePHA), were strongly expressed by the canal of Schlemm endothelium and

Cowpea mild mottle virus (CPMMV) is a carlavirus that is transmitted by whiteflies and can also be spread through seeds in cowpea, soybean, and common bean. Seed transmission of CPMMV has been described in various countries; however, it was only recently reported in Brazil as a seed-transmitted virus in soybean. CPMMV has spread widely in bean-growing areas in recent years. Most Brazilian farmers use harvested grains as seed for reseeding, increasing the risk of seedborne infection. In this study, we examine seed transmission of CPMMV in two bean cultivars using RT-PCR in combination with nucl

Candidate resistance genes encoding malectin-like and LRR domains mapped to halo blight resistance loci throughout the common bean genome are co-expressed to fight a range of Pph races. Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important crop both as a source of protein and other nutrients for human nutrition and as a nitrogen fixer that benefits sustainable agriculture. This crop is affected by halo blight disease, caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola (Pph), which can lead to 45% yield losses. Common bean resistance to Pph is conferred by six loci (Pse-1 to Pse-6) and

The choice of insect females as to where to lay their eggs strongly affects progeny survival and, thus, fitness. We conducted choice experiments with female Mexican bean beetles, which were offered lima bean plants differing in their cyanogenic capacity (HCNc), i.e., in the intensity of hydrogen cyanide release per time unit from damaged plant tissue. Females preferred to lay their eggs on plants with low HCNc. In contrast, the mere concentration of cyanide-containing precursors (the cyanogenic potential, HCNp) did not affect oviposition choices. Plant cyanogenesis occurs after tissue damage,

In this study, the effect of mixed-strain fermentation using Kluyveromyces marxianus with either Lactobacillus plantarum or Pediococcus pentosaceus on the physiochemical and nutritional properties of white kidney bean flour sourdough was investigated. The results indicated that mixed-strain fermentation reduced the anti-nutritional factors produced from the white kidney bean flour, especially in the sourdough fermented by L. plantarum and K. marxianus (WKS-LK) compared to that by P. pentosaceus and K. marxianus (WKS-JK). Meanwhile, the content of lactic acid and acetic acid and the proportion

There is an increasing awareness that herbivory by one insect species induces changes in a plant that affect the performance of other herbivore species that feed on the same plant. However, previous studies of interspecies interactions mediated by plant defense responses have rarely taken into account different insect guilds or the third trophic level. Using a combination of field and laboratory experiments, we examined how early-season herbivory in lima bean plants (Phaseolus lunatus) by the leaf-chewing herbivore Cerotoma ruficornis and the bean pod weevil Apion godmani affects the abundance

Herbivore feeding elicits defense responses in infested plants, including the emission of volatile organic compounds that can serve as indirect defense signals. Until now, the contribution of plant tissue wounding during the feeding process in the elicitation of defense responses has not been clear. For example, in lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus), the composition of the volatiles induced by both the insect caterpillar Spodoptera littoralis and the snail Cepaea hortensis is very similar. Thus, a mechanical caterpillar, MecWorm, has been designed and used in this study, which very closely resemble

With the increasing awareness of sustainability and physical health, plant protein gels, as alternatives to animal protein gels, have become a research hotspot in the development of new healthy foods. Studies on plant proteins as substitutes for animal proteins have mainly focused on their gel properties, these properties remain inferior to those of animal proteins. Consequently, modulating and enhancing the gel properties of plant proteins constitute a key challenge and research priority. Here, this study explores the influence of gelatin (Gel) modification on the thermal gel behavior of kidn

Plant volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are an important link that mediates chemical communication between plants and plants, plants and insects, and plants and natural enemies of insect pests. In this study, we tested the response in the selective behavior of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, to the VOCs of kidney bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L., to explore their "attraction" or "repellent" effects regarding their application in integrated pest management (i.e., IPM). The results indicated that 12.7 μL/mL (E, E, E, E)-squalene, 3.2 μL/mL dioctyl phthalate, and 82.2 μL/mL ethyl be
