Simultaneous phenanthrene biodegradation and carbon mineralization by a denitrifying bioemulsifier-producing Pseudomonas stutzeri YWX-1 in almost-anoxic water environments.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) accumulation in water environments from petroleum development and transportation poses biosecurity risks and increases CO2 emissions, yet the bioremediation processes and related CO2 fate in oxygen-deprived deep water receive little attention. In this study, the almost-anoxic phenanthrene biodegradation and associated CO2 metabolism by a denitrifying Pseudomonas stutzeri strain YWX-1 were detected. The results showed that 41.52% of 100 mg L-1 phenanthrene was biodegraded via the dual pathway of oxygenation and denitrification within 21 days with the cons

Enhancing Phenanthrene Degradation by Burkholderia sp. FM-2 with Rhamnolipid: Mechanistic Insights from Cell Surface Properties and Transcriptomic Analysis.

Various surfactants have been applied for the remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated environments, but their roles in bioremediation remain controversial. This study focused on rhamnolipid (a typical surfactant) and Burkholderia sp. FM-2 (a high-efficiency phenanthrene-degrading bacterium), investigating its effects on phenanthrene solubilization and biodegradation by analyzing cell surface characteristics and gene expression differences. Results showed that low concentrations of rhamnolipid (20-120 mg/L) promoted phenanthrene degradation, while high concentration (4

Quantification of Naphthalene Dioxygenase (NahAC) and Catechol Dioxygenase (C23O) Catabolic Genes Produced by Phenanthrene-Degrading Pseudomonas fluorescens AH-40.

BACKGROUND: Petroleum polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are known to be toxic and carcinogenic for humans and their contamination of soils and water is of great environmental concern. Identification of the key microorganisms that play a role in pollutant degradation processes is relevant to the development of optimal in situ bioremediation strategies. OBJECTIVE: Detection of the ability of Pseudomonas fluorescens AH-40 to consume phenanthrene as a sole carbon source and determining the variation in the concentration of both nahAC and C23O catabolic genes during 15 days of the incubation

Novel nitrated derivatives of 5,8-diazabenzo[c]phenanthrene and 9,14-diazadibenz[a,e]acephenanthrylene: new classes of potent mutagenic compounds.

We report the synthesis of 4-nitro-5,8-diazabenzo[c]phenanthrene (4-NDBP) and 11-nitro-9,14-diazadibenz[a,e]acephenanthrylene (11-NDDA) and the remarkable mutagenic activity of the latter. These two compounds and their non-nitrated parents, 5, 8-diazabenzo[c]phenanthrene (DBP) and 9,14-diazadibenz[a, e]acephenanthrylene (DDA), were screened in Ames plate incorporation assays against Escherichia coli WP2uvrA and Salmonella typhimurium TA98 both in the presence and absence of S9 liver fraction from Aroclor 1254-induced rats. None of the four compounds were cytotoxic up to the limits of their sol

Mitigating cadmium-phenanthrene co-contamination in rice via rhizosphere tube-insertion: The dual role of iron plaque and microbial regulation.

Cadmium (Cd) and phenanthrene (Phen) co-contamination threatens the safety of rice production in paddies. This study introduces a novel rhizosphere regulation technique-plastic tube insertion into the rhizosphere soil (PIRS)-which involves placing adsorbent packed plastic dropper tubes into the contaminated rice rhizosphere. This approach combines adsorbent-packed tubes with the in-situ formation of iron oxide coatings on tube walls and enrichment of functional microorganisms for pollutant mitigation. Field experiments demonstrated that PIRS reduced Cd in brown rice by 50.3-96.8% (below the Ch

Dermal absorption drives phenanthrene lethality in Eisenia fetida: A multi-scale mechanistic framework linking mitochondrial uncoupling to organismal toxicity.

Phenanthrene (PHE) is a priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon posing substantial ecological risks to soil invertebrates, yet the mechanistic basis of its toxicity remains incompletely characterized. This study aimed to evaluate route-dependent PHE toxicity in earthworms by comparing sealed and unsealed soil exposures, and to link organismal responses with tissue-specific oxidative stress and mitochondrial bioenergetic disruption. Earthworms were exposed to PHE-contaminated soil (0-160 mg kg-1) under sealed (oral ingestion blocked) and unsealed conditions for 14 days, integrating lethality,

Characterization of 2-phenanthroyl-CoA reductase, an ATP-independent type III aryl-CoA reductase involved in anaerobic phenanthrene degradation.

Anaerobic degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with three or more aromatic rings is extremely slow because the compounds are very poorly soluble in water and chemically stable. Phenanthrene is the only three-ring PAH where the anaerobic degradation has been partially elucidated. Phenanthrene is first activated via carboxylation producing 2-phenanthroate, which is further converted to 2-phenanthroyl-coenzyme A (CoA) via the enzyme 2-phenanthroate:CoA ligase. In this study, we elucidated the next degradation step, the reduction of 2-phenanthroyl-CoA to dihydro-2-phenanthroyl-Co

Exploring the chemical dynamics of phenanthrene (C14H10) formation via the bimolecular gas-phase reaction of the phenylethynyl radical (C6H5CC) with benzene (C6H6).

The exploration of the fundamental formation mechanisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is crucial for the understanding of molecular mass growth processes leading to two- and three-dimensional carbonaceous nanostructures (nanosheets, graphenes, nanotubes, buckyballs) in extraterrestrial environments (circumstellar envelopes, planetary nebulae, molecular clouds) and combustion systems. While key studies have been conducted exploiting traditional, high-temperature mechanisms such as the hydrogen abstraction-acetylene addition (HACA) and phenyl addition-dehydrocyclization (PAC) pathwa

Maternal exposure to phenanthrene induces testicular apoptosis and Sertoli cell dysfunction in F1 adult male mice: a histological and molecular study.

OBJECTIVE: Phenanthrene, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, is found in abundance in environmental pollutants, food, and drinking water. This substance can accumulate in body tissues and exert harmful effects. Moreover, phenanthrene can cross the placental barrier, potentially impacting fetal development. We aimed to explore the impacts of maternal exposure to phenanthrene on testicular tissue and Sertoli cell function in F1 mice. METHODS: Female rats with vaginal plugs were randomly assigned to one of three groups: control, sham, or phenanthrene. The control group received no intervention du

3-Methyl-phenanthrene (3-MP) disrupts the electrical and contractile activity of the heart of the polar fish, navaga cod (Eleginus nawaga).

Alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are abundant in crude oil and are enriched during petroleum refinement but knowledge of their cardiotoxicity remains limited. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are considered the main hazardous components in crude oil and the tricyclic PAH phenanthrene has been singled out for its direct effects on cardiac tissue in mammals and fish. Here we test the impact of the monomethylated phenanthrene, 3-methylphenanthrene (3-MP), on the contractile and electrical function of the atrium and ventricle of a polar fish, the navaga cod (Eleginus nawaga). Anaerobic phenanthrene biodegradation by a new salt-tolerant/halophilic and nitrate-reducing Virgibacillus halodenitrificans strain PheN4 and metabolic processes exploration.

The biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) under hypersaline environments has received increasing attention, whereas the study of anaerobic PAH biodegradation under hypersaline environments is still lacking. Here, we found a pure culture designated PheN4, which was affiliated with Virgibacillus halodenitrificans and could degrade phenanthrene with nitrate as the terminal electron acceptor and a wide range of salinities (from 0.3% to 20%) under anaerobic environments. The optimal salinity for biodegradation of phenanthrene by PheN4 was 5%, which could degrade 93.5% of 0.62 ±

Uptake of benzo[a]pyrene, but not of phenanthrene, is inhibited by fatty acids in intestinal brush border membrane vesicles of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Partial replacement of fish ingredients with vegetable ingredients has elevated levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Atlantic salmon reared on these feeds. PAH uptake in the intestinal tract is postulated to occur in association with lipid absorption and could well be affected by fatty acid composition. We therefore investigated the effects of a fish oil and vegetable oil fatty acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n-3) and oleic acid (18:1n-9) respectively, on the uptake of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and phenanthrene (PHE) across the intestinal brush border membrane in the salmonid

Enhanced electrokinetically-delivered persulfate and alternating electric field induced thermal effect activated persulfate in situ for remediation of phenanthrene contaminated clay.

Delivering persulfate (PS) efficiently into clay is an unsolved challenge. This study proposes a novel strategy with enhanced electrokinetically -delivery PS into clay by using PS for continuously flushing cathode to inhibit water electrolysis at cathode electrode. On this basis, a novel approach of heating soil by alternating current (AC) was used to thermally activate PS in situ. Results show that the mass transfer efficiency of PS by electroosmotic flow is about 20 times that by electromigration. Moreover, when PS was added in the anode chamber, using PS solution continuously flushing catho

The title cadmium(II) coordination polymer, [Cd(2)(C(4)H(2)O(4))Cl(2)(C(19)H(12)N(4))(2)](n), (I), was obtained by the reaction of CdCl(2) x 2.5 H(2)O, fumaric acid (H(2)fum) and 2-phenyl-1H-1,3,7,8-tetraazacyclopenta[l]phenanthrene (L) under hydrothermal conditions. The fum dianion is situated across an inversion centre in the space group P1. The Cd(II) atom is six-coordinated by two L N atoms, two fum O atoms and two Cl atoms in a distorted octahedral geometry. The mu(2)-Cl atoms and the bis-chelating fum dianions bridge neighbouring Cd(II) centres, yielding a coordination polymer chain stru

Phenanthrene, but not its isomer anthracene, effectively activates both human and mouse nuclear receptor constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) and induces hepatotoxicity in mice.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of pervasive global environmental pollutants and adversely affect human health. Among PAHs, phenanthrene and anthracene are isomers consisting of three benzene rings. In the present study, we have made comparisons of constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) activation and toxic effects on the liver between these two isomers. Phenanthrene, but not anthracene, significantly induced promoter activity and gene expression of human drug metabolizing enzyme CYP2B6 in HepG2 cells and human primary hepatocytes, respectively. DNA-stable isotope probing and metagenomics reveal Fe(II) oxidation by core microflora in microoxic rhizospheric habitats to mitigate the accumulation of cadmium and phenanthrene in rice.

Rice rhizosphere soil-porewater microdomains exist within an iron (Fe)-rich microoxic habitat during paddy soil flooding. However, the response mechanisms of core microflora in this habitat to Fe(II)-oxidation-mediated cadmium (Cd) and phenanthrene (Phen) remain unclear. Using gel-stabilized gradient systems to replicate the microoxic conditions in the rice rhizosphere porewater, we found that microaerophilic rhizobacteria drove Fe(II) oxidation to yield iron oxides, thereby reducing the Cd and Phen contents in the rhizosphere porewater and rice (Cd and Phen decreased by 15.9%-78.0% and 10.1%-
