In urethane-anesthetized, artificially ventilated rats, alterations in dorsal spinal cord blood flow (SCBF) at the L4-6 level were measured with laser Doppler flowmetry in response to noxious mechanical cutaneous stimulation (pinching) of either a forepaw or a hindpaw. The central adrenergic innervation of the cerebral microvessels may play a role in the control of blood-brain barrier permeability. To pursue the study of this hypothesis we investigated the effect of noradrenaline on both the permeability of the blood-brain barrier to sodium fluorescein and on the pinocytotic activity of cerebral endothelial cells in the rat. CASE PRESENTATION: We report here an unusual presentation of pheochromocytoma with secondary amenorrhoea and its resolution after medical treatment with the alpha adrenergic blocker, Phenoxybenzamine.
CONCLUSION: Pheochromocytoma is a rare cause of secondary amenorrhoea.

Short-term desensitization of the contractile response of the guinea-pig taenia caecum to histamine was tested in the absence of Ca++. Desensitization was monitored both by the fall of histamine response and by the decrease of irreversible blockade by phenoxybenzamine. A patient with a clinical and angiographic diagnosis of nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia had phenoxybenzamine directly infused into the superior mesenteric artery to counteract the existing splanchnic vasoconstriction. The diagnosis was confirmed by later operative intervention and the patient recovered. Vasodilatory drugs may play a significant role in the management of patients with nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia.

The authors report five patients with detrusor inactivity in suprasacral spinal cord lesions with perineal spasticity. In all of these cases with cervical or high thoracic lesions treatment with an alpha-blocking drug (Phenoxybenzamine) allowed bladder activity to return. These results suggest that the sacral parasympathetic centre is under the inhibitory influence of the sympathetic nervous system.

Lower urinary tract obstruction in patients with neurological lesions can be due to "sympathetic dyssynergia". The obstruction can be at the level of the external sphincter. Phentolamine (i.v.) used during the voiding cystourethrogram helps to make the diagnosis. Phenoxybenzamine therapy produced improvement in 10 of 18 patients. As a rule, patients had to continue on the drug to maintain their response.

Ovaries from sexually mature virgin rabbits were dissected free on both sides and cannulated in situ via that part of the aortic segment supplying the ovarian arteries. Intravenous injection of phenoxybenzamine, choline 2,6-xylyl ether bromide (xylocholine, TM 10), piperoxane or dihydroergotamine increases the vasopressor activity of blood plasma, collected from cats under chloralose anaesthesia. The increased vasopressor activity that follows the administration of piperoxane is due to an increase of adrenaline and noradrenaline in the plasma. Cross-circulation experiments show that catechol amines are liberated from the spleen by piperoxane.
