Attraction of Amblyomma variegatum (ticks) to the attraction-aggregation-attachment-pheromone with or without carbon dioxide.

The responses of adult Amblyomma variegatum ticks released from various distances to different doses of the synthetic attraction-aggregation-attachment pheromone (AAAP) (made up of orthonitrophenol, methyl salicylate and nonanoic acid in paraffin oil), dispensed from the center of circular field plots, were studied in the presence or absence of elevated levels of CO2. Up to 90% of the ticks released were attracted to the pheromone source in the presence of CO2 within 3h. CO2 alone was unattractive, similar to previous findings in Zimbabwe, but unlike results from a Caribbean A. variegatum popu

Components of male aggregation pheromone of strawberry blossom weevil, Anthonomus rubi herbst. (Coleoptera:Curculionidae).

The strawberry blossom weevil, Anthonomus rubi, is a major pest of strawberries in the United Kingdom and continental Europe. As part of a project to develop noninsecticidal control methods, the pheromone system of this species was investigated. Comparison of volatiles produced by field-collected, overwintering individuals of each sex led to identification of three male-specific compounds--(Z)-2-(3,3-dimethylcyclohexylidene)ethanol, (cis)-1-methyl-2-(1-methylethenyl)cyclobutaneethanol, and 2-(1-methylethenyl)-5-methyl-4-hexen-1-ol (lavandulol)--in amounts of 6.1, 1.2, and 0.82 microg/day/ male

Nervus terminalis lesions: I. No effect on pheromonally induced testosterone surges in the male hamster.

The involvement of the nervus terminalis or terminal nerve in the pheromonally induced testosterone surge in the male hamster was investigated. Blood was collected from male hamsters not exposed to odor (baseline), and then a week later from the same hamsters exposed to the odor of vaginal discharge from an estrous female. Terminal nerve lesions, forebrain lesions, or sham surgeries were performed, and blood was collected again with and without odor stimulation. Serum testosterone levels were assessed by radioimmunoassay. None of the surgical procedures interrupted the ability of the male hams

Pheromone/acaricide mixtures in the control of the tick Amblyomma hebraeum: effects of acaricides on attraction and attachment.

Unfed adults and nymphs of the bont tick Amblyomma hebraeum Koch are attracted to hosts on which fed males, emitting an aggregation-attachment pheromone (AAP), are attached. Pheromone/acaricide mixtures have the potential to selectively attract and kill these ticks. We have investigated the effects of three acaricides, amitraz (an amidine), flumethrin (a synthetic pyrethroid) and chlorfenvinphos (an organophosphate), combined with AAP, on the attraction and attachment of the unfed adults. Attraction, measured in field assays involving AAP and CO2, was not inhibited by any of the acaricides. At

Functional Divergence of Two General Odorant-Binding Proteins to Sex Pheromones and Host Plant Volatiles in Adoxophyes orana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae).

Adoxophyes orana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is a significant polyphagous leafroller that damages trees and shrubs in Rosaceae and other families. However, the molecular mechanisms by which this pest recognizes sex pheromones and host plant volatiles remain largely unknown. Tissue expression profiles indicated that two general odorant-binding proteins (AoraGOBP1 and AoraGOBP2) were more abundant in the antennae and wings of both sexes, with AoraGOBP1 being rich in the female head and abdomen. Temporal expression profiles showed that AoraGOBP1 was expressed at the highest level in 5 day-nmated a

Tsetse flies (Glossina morsitans morsitans) choose birthing sites guided by substrate cues with no evidence for a role of pheromones.

Tsetse flies significantly impact public health and economic development in sub-Saharan African countries by transmitting the fatal disease African trypanosomiasis. Unusually, instead of laying eggs, tsetse birth a single larva that immediately burrows into the soil to pupate. Where the female chooses to larviposit is, therefore, crucial for offspring survival. Previous laboratory studies suggested that a putative larval pheromone, n-pentadecane, attracts gravid female Glossina morsitans morsitans to appropriate larviposition sites. However, this attraction could not be reproduced in field exp

Evidence of female sex pheromones and characterization of the cuticular lipids of unfed, adult male versus female blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis.

Copulation in Ixodes scapularis involves physical contact between the male and female (on or off the host), male mounting of the female, insertion/maintenance of the male chelicerae in the female genital pore (initiates spermatophore production), and the transfer of the spermatophore by the male into the female genital pore. Bioassays determined that male mounting behavior/chelicerae insertion required direct contact with the female likely requiring non-volatile chemical cues with no evidence of a female volatile sex pheromone to attract males. Unfed virgin adult females and replete mated adul

Identification of guanine and hematin as arrestment pheromones of poultry red mites, Dermanyssus gallinae (Acari: Dermanyssidae) and their application in mite control.

Dermanyssus gallinae, also known as the poultry red mite (PRM), is one of widespread ectoparasite in the poultry industry worldwide, causing direct and indirect detriments to poultry as well as substantial financial losses. Novel control methods are urgently needed to improve the current acaricide-based control of D. gallinae. The control approach based on arrestment pheromone is environment-friendly but the related research is limited in PRMs. In the present study we found two compounds from the mite feces acting as arrestment pheromones of D. gallinae, which could lead to mite arrestment upo

The alkenes Z9-C29 and Z9-C31 function as quorum-sensing pheromones stimulating worker reproduction in the bumble bee Bombus terrestris.

Division of labor in reproduction in eusocial insects is governed by delicate and context- dependent mechanisms, yet the regulatory processes remain largely unclear. Here, we investigate social cues involved in the establishment of reproductive dominance in bumble bee (Bombus terrestris) workers. We reveal the roles of two alkenes, (Z)-9-nonacosene (Z9- C29) and (Z)-9-hentriacontene (Z9- C31) in the activation of ovarian development. These alkenes are found throughout the queenright bumble bee colony, including wax, workers, drones, and gynes, and their levels are positively correlated with co

The olfactory system, not the terminal nerve, functions as the primary chemosensory pathway mediating responses to sex pheromones in male goldfish.

Studies of the neural mechanisms underlying responsiveness to sex pheromones in male goldfish suggest that, contrary to a currently popular hypothesis, the olfactory system (cranial nerve 1), and not the terminal nerve (cranial nerve 0), mediates chemosensory responses to pheromones. When the olfactory epithelium of male goldfish was exposed to two identified sex pheromones, 17 alpha, 20 beta-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one and a mixture of prostaglandin F2 alpha and its metabolite 15-keto-prostaglandin F2 alpha, the spontaneous activity of olfactory neurons located in the medical portion of the olf

When insects smell like plants: how sensory bias shapes insect pheromone evolution.

Insects produce a vast diversity of sex pheromone compounds despite strong stabilizing selection on species-specific signals. In multiple insect lineages, these pheromones chemically resemble the volatiles produced by plants. Here, I propose that adaptation of insect sensory systems to plant chemistry biases the origin and diversification of insect pheromones. Repeated independent recruitment of plant-like compounds, either through sequestration or de novo biosynthesis, suggests that pheromone evolution can be shaped by ecological interactions. Receptors with dual roles in host detection and p

Variations on a Theme: Cerambycid Beetles Use Lactone Stereoisomers to Optimize Use of Pheromone Chemical Space.

Three different diastereomers of 6-ethyl-3,5-dimethyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-one (henceforth lactone) were identified from male-specific volatiles produced by the neotropical cerambycid beetles (subfamily Lamiinae) Atrypanius lignarius (Bates), Oedopeza umbrosa (Germar), and Oreodera glauca glauca (L.). Atrypanius lignarius produced one of the enantiomers of the (3R*,5S*,6S*)-diastereomer, whereas O. umbrosa produced the (3S,5S,6R)-lactone, and O. glauca glauca produced the (3S,5R,6S)-lactone. In field bioassays, the O. umbrosa (3S,5S,6R)-lactone attracted only conspecific adults of both sexes.

A Male-Associated Aggregation Pheromone of Cyrtogenius luteus, An Invasive Bark Beetle in Southern South America.

Bark beetles are among the most important invasive pests affecting pine forestry worldwide, yet the chemical ecology of many introduced species remains largely unknown. Cyrtogenius luteus is an invasive scolytine established in pine plantations in South America, for which no pheromone had previously been identified. Here, we report the identification and biological evaluation of a male-associated aggregation pheromone in C. luteus. Volatiles from male-infested, female-infested, and unattacked Pinus taeda wood were collected and analyzed by thermal desorption GC-MS. A compound consistently dete

A male-derived volatile sex pheromone in Caenorhabditis nematodes identified through its mimicry by a predator.

Recent studies demonstrated that the predacious fungi Arthrobotrys oligospora emits a mixture of volatile chemical cues that function to attract nematode prey. The strong attraction elicited by one of the mixture components, methyl 3-methyl-2-butenoate (MMB), was highly female- and hermaphrodite-specific within several Caenorhabditis species, including C. remanei and C. elegans, suggesting that MMB might function as a mimic of an endogenous, male-produced, volatile sex pheromone (VSP) within these species. Here, we report evidence that MMB is produced by C. remanei males at levels that are att

Identification and Field Testing of Volatile Components in the Sex Attractant Pheromone Blend of Female House Mice.

Recently, it was reported (i) that the sex pheromone blend of male house mice, Mus musculus, comprises not only volatile components (3,4-dehydro-exo-brevicomin; 2-sec-butyl-4,5-dihydrothiazole) but also a component of low volatility (the sex steroid testosterone), and (ii) that the sex steroids progesterone and estradiol are sex pheromone components of female house mice. Here we tested the hypothesis that the sex attractant pheromone blend of female mice, analogous to that of male mice, also comprises volatile pheromone components. Analyzing by GC-MS the head space volatiles of bedding soiled

Identification of a potential third component of the male-produced pheromone of Anoplophora glabripennis and its effect on behavior.

The Asian longhorned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis, is considered to be one of the most serious invasive pests of deciduous trees in North America. An efficient monitoring trap is needed to detect and delimit new introductions and assess population densities of established infestations. Previous studies on A. glabripennis have shown that males produce a two-component aggregation pheromone that consists of a 1:1 blend of 4-(n-heptyloxy)butan-1-ol and 4-(n-heptyloxy)butanal. Moderate attraction in field trapping studies suggested that there may be additional chemical cues missing. Volatiles f

Aerosol delivery of trail pheromone disrupts the foraging of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta.

BACKGROUND: The fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, is one of the most aggressive and invasive species in the world. The trail pheromone Z,E-α-farnesene (91% purity) was prepared, and disruption of worker trail orientation was tested using an ethanol-based aerosol formulation presenting a single puff of this compound by airbrush and compressed air. Trail-following behaviour was recorded by overhead webcam and ants digitised before and after presentation of the aerosol treatment at four rates (1.6, 16, 160 and 1600 ng cm(-2)). RESULTS: Ants preferred 110 ng cm(-1) over 11, 1.1 and 0.11 ng cm(-1) for

Evolutionary shifts in courtship pheromone composition revealed by EST analysis of plethodontid salamander mental glands.

Courtship behavior in salamanders of the family Plethodontidae can last more than an hour. During courtship, males use stereotyped behaviors to repeatedly deliver a variety of proteinaceous pheromones to the female. These pheromones are produced and released from a specialized gland on the male's chin (the mental gland). Several pheromone components are well characterized and represented by high frequency transcripts in cDNA pools derived from plethodontid mental glands. However, evolutionary trends in the overall composition of the pheromonal signal are poorly understood. To address this issu

A Drosophila protein family implicated in pheromone perception is related to Tay-Sachs GM2-activator protein.

Low volatility, lipid-like cuticular hydrocarbon pheromones produced by Drosophila melanogaster females play an essential role in triggering and modulating mating behavior, but the chemosensory mechanisms involved remain poorly understood. Recently, we showed that the CheB42a protein, which is expressed in only 10 pheromone-sensing taste hairs on the front legs of males, modulates progression to late stages of male courtship behavior in response to female-specific cuticular hydrocarbons. Here we report that expression of all 12 genes in the CheB gene family is predominantly or exclusively gust
