Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as soil-transmitted helminthiasis, lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis, leprosy, rabies, and food-borne trematodiasis are endemic in the Philippines. Despite global and national elimination efforts, these six NTDs remain a persistent burden to the poor, those living in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs), and other vulnerable groups. This narrative review synthesized data from Field Health Services Information System (FHSIS) reports of the Philippine Department of Health (DOH) from 2020 to 2024, the available literature from electro

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study is to estimate the cost of breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and management in the Philippines. Specifically, it aims to identify the resource requirements and interventions related to breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and management, measure resource volumes (number of units), learn to value resource items (unit costs), and determine the total cost of treatment per disease stage.
METHODS: The study covered nine tertiary hospitals, seven of which were government hospitals and two were private hospitals, with all tertiary hospitals providing breast cancer s

Leptospirosis remains a pressing yet under-recognized public health burden in the Philippines with an alarming 43.45% rise in cases in early 2025. Outbreaks closely follow flooding, disproportionately affecting impoverished communities in informal, flood-prone settlements where poor sanitation, unsafe housing, and limited healthcare access compound vulnerability. Current responses remain largely hospital-based and reactive, straining resources during seasonal surges while leaving structural drivers unaddressed. This article calls for a shift to multisectoral, preventive strategies that reduce

Dogs are the primary transmitters of the rabies virus in the Philippines; however, to the best of our knowledge, no published studies have examined its detailed neuropathology. The present study analyzed the neuropathology in the cerebrum, hippocampus, thalamus, and brainstem of 70 rabid dogs with confirmed rabies infection in the Philippines. Histopathologically, inclusion bodies (Negri bodies) were detected in the hippocampus (87.14%), cerebrum (70%), and thalamus (2.86%) of the dogs. The inclusion bodies in the cytoplasm of the hippocampal and cerebral cortical pyramidal cells were large an

Schistosomiasis is a chronic and debilitating neglected tropical disease (NTD), second only to malaria as one of the most devastating parasitic diseases. Caused by a parasitic flatworm of the genus Schistosoma, infection occurs when skin comes in contact with contaminated freshwater that contains schistosome-hosting snails. The disease continues to be endemic in many regions of the Philippines, where it poses a significant public health challenge due to a lack of healthcare resources. In the Philippines, additional mammalian reservoirs for the S. japonicum parasite, especially bovines such as

BACKGROUND: A large number of studies have assessed risk factors for infection with soil-transmitted helminths (STH), but few have investigated the interactions between the different parasites or compared these between host species across hosts. Here, we assessed the associations between Ascaris, Trichuris, hookworm, strongyle and Toxocara infections in the Philippines in human and animal hosts.
METHODS: Faecal samples were collected from humans and animals (dogs, cats and pigs) in 252 households from four villages in southern Philippines and intestinal helminth infections were assessed by mi

The Philippine newborn bloodspot screening (NBS) program began in 1996 with 24 hospitals and was formalized by legislation in 2004. The NBS panel was recently expanded to include a number of additional hereditary congenital conditions. Expertise and experiences from other NBS programs already screening for hemoglobinopathies were essential to its successful integration into the ongoing dried bloodspot NBS program in the Philippines. Building on clinical experiences and population data from Filipinos born in California, USA, hemoglobinopathies (including thalassemias) were selected for inclusio

BACKGROUND: Responses of subnational government units are crucial in the containment of the spread of pathogens in a country. To mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Philippine national government through its Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases outlined different quarantine measures wherein each level has a corresponding degree of rigidity from keeping only the essential businesses open to allowing all establishments to operate at a certain capacity. Other measures also involve prohibiting individuals at a certain age bracket from going outside of their homes.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that often causes nosocomial infections resistant to treatment. Rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are increasing, as are rates of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and possible extensively drug-resistant (XDR) infections. Our objective was to characterize the molecular epidemiology and AMR mechanisms of this pathogen. We sequenced the whole genome for each of 176 P. aeruginosa isolates collected in the Philippines in 2013-2014; derived the multilocus sequence type (MLST), presence of AMR determinants and relatedness between isolates; and determ

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a member of the Flaviviridae family, which includes other clinically notable viruses such as the 4 dengue virus serotypes (DENV-1-4). Distinguishing DENVs from ZIKV using the established serologic assays widely used for monitoring DENV transmission is difficult because of antibody cross-reactivity between these closely related flaviviruses. We describe a modified and improved recombinant envelope domain III-based serologic assay for detecting ZIKV type-specific antibodies in regions with endemic DENV transmission. When the assay was used to measure ZIKV seroprevalence in 2

Antimicrobial-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a major threat to public health and is of particular concern in the Western Pacific Region, where the incidence of gonorrhoea is high. The Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Program (ARSP) has been capturing information on resistant gonorrhoea since 1996, but genomic epidemiology studies on this pathogen are lacking in the Philippines. We sequenced the whole genomes of 21 N. gonorrhoeae isolates collected in 2013-2014 by ARSP. The multilocus sequence type, multiantigen sequence type, presence of determinants of antimicrobial resistance and re

BACKGROUND: Findings were published in 2015 that highlighted the endemicity of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in the Philippines. The policymakers responded by conducting an immunization campaign and strengthening the surveillance system. Using data on the revitalized surveillance system, the epidemiology of JE in the country was updated.
METHODS: Electronic databases were searched, and conference proceedings related to JE in the Philippines were identified until 31 December 2018. Surveillance data from 01 January 2014 to 31 December 2017 were used. The 2015 population census was used to estimate

In 2018, the Philippines announced a postabortion care policy that rolls back crucial safeguards aimed at protecting women who seek medical treatment for postabortion complications from discrimination and abuse. It replaces another policy that was introduced in 2016, following years of advocacy by national and international advocates who were concerned about the mistreatment of women seeking postabortion care due to discriminatory practices in the health system and abortion stigma. The new policy is narrower in scope than the previous policy and reinforces abortion stigma by emphasizing the le

Dengue is one of the most problematic vector-borne diseases in the Philippines, with an estimated 842,867 cases resulting in medical costs of $345 million U.S. dollars annually. In December 2015, the first dengue vaccine, known as chimeric yellow fever virus-dengue virus tetravalent dengue vaccine, was approved for use in the Philippines and is given to children 9 years of age. To estimate the cost-effectiveness of dengue vaccination in the Philippines, we developed an age-structured model of dengue transmission and vaccination. Using our model, we compared two vaccination scenarios entailing

A 54-year-old man presented with fever, vomiting, jaundice and conjunctival injection. These clinical signs, together with the presence of mild inflammation, hepatitis and severe acute kidney injury, lead to the suspicion of leptospirosis. Infection was serologically confirmed and treatment with ceftriaxone and intermittent haemodialysis was followed by rapid clinical and biochemical recovery. Worldwide, leptospirosis is an emerging pathogen as a result of overpopulation and flooding, but due to increasing tourism also in other regions. In Belgium, clinicians must be aware of endemic as well a

Rabies is a zoonotic disease caused by the rabies virus. While the salivary glands are important as exit and propagation sites for the rabies virus, the mechanisms of rabies excretion remain unclear. Here, we investigated the histopathology of the salivary glands of rabid dogs and analyzed the mechanism of excretion into the oral cavity. Mandibular and parotid glands of 22 rabid dogs and three control dogs were used. Mild to moderate non-suppurative sialadenitis was observed in the mandibular glands of 19 of the 22 dogs, characterized by loss of acinar epithelium and infiltration by lymphoplas

BACKGROUND: In order to increase the efficient allocation of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) disease control resources in the Philippines, we aimed to describe for the first time the spatial variation in the prevalence of A. lumbricoides, T. trichiura and hookworm across the country, quantify the association between the physical environment and spatial variation of STH infection and develop predictive risk maps for each infection.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Data on STH infection from 35,573 individuals across the country were geolocated at the barangay level and included in the analysis.

Despite advances in reproductive health law, many Filipino women experience unintended pregnancies, and because abortion is highly stigmatized in the country, many who seek abortion undergo unsafe procedures. This report provides a summary of reproductive health indicators in the Philippines—in particular, levels of contraceptive use, unplanned pregnancy and unsafe abortion—and describes the sociopolitical context in which services are provided, the consequences of unintended pregnancy and unsafe abortion, and recommendations for improving access to reproductive health services.
