"Selfie-epilepsy": A novel photosensitivity.

PURPOSE: Photosensitivity is a well-described phenomenon; affecting a relatively small proportion of individuals with epilepsy. Typically people with photosensitive epilepsies are at risk of seizures induced by shimmering natural light, strobe lights and with particular patterns or flicker frequencies on television and video games. METHODS & RESULTS: We present a novel case of photosensitivity captured during video EEG monitoring showing reproducible photosensitivity with the ever-popular social phenomenon; the "selfie." The patient had previously demonstrated photosensitive myoclonus with in

Cortical reflex myoclonus in patients with the mitochondrial DNA transfer RNA(Lys)(8344) (MERRF) mutation.

Five patients from three families with the syndrome of myoclonic epilepsy and ragged red fibres (MERRF), associated with the mitochondrial DNA point mutation at position 8344, were studied neurophysiologically to determine the characteristics of their myoclonus. The findings were those of cortical reflex myoclonus, with enlarged cortical somatosensory evoked potentials and late reflex responses to peripheral nerve stimulation. Electroencephalography showed paroxysmal spike and polyspike and wave discharges, with photic sensitivity. This pattern of electrophysiological abnormalities was uniform

Assessment of a 16-Channel Ambulatory Dry Electrode EEG for Remote Monitoring.

Ambulatory EEGs began emerging in the healthcare industry over the years, setting a new norm for long-term monitoring services. The present devices in the market are neither meant for remote monitoring due to their technical complexity nor for meeting clinical setting needs in epilepsy patient monitoring. In this paper, we propose an ambulatory EEG device, OptiEEG, that has low setup complexity, for the remote EEG monitoring of epilepsy patients. OptiEEG's signal quality was compared with a gold standard clinical device, Natus. The experiment between OptiEEG and Natus included three different

Detection and analysis of MEG signals in occipital region with double-channel OPM sensors.

BACKGROUND: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) has high temporal and spatial resolution and good spatial accuracy in determining the locations of source activity among most non-invasive imaging. The recently developed technology of optically-pumped magnetometer (OPM) has sensitivity comparable to that of the superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) used in commercial MEG system. NEW METHOD: Double-channel OPM-MEG system detects human photic blocking of alpha rhythm at the occipital region of skull in the magnetically shielded environment via a wearable whole-cortex 3D-printed helmet. Raloxifene affects brain activation patterns in postmenopausal women during visual encoding.

Recent brain imaging studies have shown that estrogens alter brain activation patterns upon working memory tasks in postmenopausal women. Estrogens, however, have many systemic side effects. We investigated the effect of the Selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) raloxifene on brain activation patterns during a memory task in postmenopausal women with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Twenty postmenopausal and right handed women (mean age 65.7 years; SD 3.0) were included in this double blind, placebo controlled and randomized study. Whole brain fMRI was performed before and

Video material and epilepsy.

Nine patients who had epileptic attacks while playing computer games were studied in the laboratory. Patients had an EEG recorded as well as their response to intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) at flash rates of 1-60 fps. In addition, pattern sensitivity was assessed in all patients by a gratings pattern. Only 2 patients had no previous history of convulsions, and only 2 had a normal basic EEG. All but 1 were sensitive to IPS, and all but 1 were pattern sensitive. Most patients were male, but although this appears to conflict with previously published literature results regarding the sex ra

Effects of taltrimide, an experimental taurine derivative, on photoconvulsive response in epileptic patients.

Taltrimide is a lipophilic taurine derivative with definitive anticonvulsive effects in experimental epilepsy models. In this study, taltrimide was administered for 6 days, and the effects of the treatment on photoconvulsive response in EEG in eight epileptic patients were evaluated. Discharges provoked by intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) were increased by greater than 50% in four patients after taltrimide treatment. Only one patient had reduction of sensitivity. There was only a slight change in discharges after hyperventilation and no change in spontaneous paroxysms. The effects of talt

Electrical status epilepticus lasting for 17 months without behavioural changes.

In an 8-year-old girl a seizure occurred, lasting 45 min with loss of consciousness and deviation of the eyes, 2 days after the onset of mumps. Next day the EEG showed bilateral, synchronized, continuous 2.5-3.5 c/sec spike-wave discharges, more prominent over the posterior regions. The abnormality was suppressed on eye opening and replaced by delta activity and short duration spike-wave paroxysms. Mental activity, hyperventilation, and photic stimulation did not change the pattern. The same EEG pattern persisted during daytime sleep. This picture has lasted for 17 months without any associate

Subdural electrode recording of generalized photoepileptic responses.

We evaluated the spatiotemporal distribution of photic driving (PDR), photoparoxysmal (PPR), and photoconvulsive (PCR) responses recorded by intracranial electrodes (ic-EEG) in a patient with generalized photosensitivity and right frontal lobe cortical dysplasia. Intermittent light stimulation (ILS) was performed thirteen times in nine days. Cortical responses to ILS recorded by ic-EEG were reviewed and classified as PDRs, PPRs, and PCRs. Photic driving responses were restricted to the occipital lobe at ILS frequencies below 9 Hz, spreading to the parietal and central regions at > 9 Hz. Photop

Photic reflex myoclonus: a neurophysiological study in progressive myoclonus epilepsies.

PURPOSE: To investigate the neurophysiological features of photic reflex myoclonus (PRM) in patients with progressive myoclonus epilepsies (PMEs) of different types (Unverricht-Lundborg disease, Lafora's disease, cryptogenic). METHODS: All patients underwent computerized video-polygraphic recordings, collecting electromyographic (EMG) activity from several cranial and limb muscles. PRM was elicited by intermittent photic stimulation (IPS). RESULTS: IPS could evoke PRM with a 1:1 relation at frequencies up to 12 Hz. Back-average of the EEG, triggered from the onset of PRM at the upper limbs,

The influence of N2-O2 and He-O2 saturation diving on electroencephalogram of human bodies.

This paper reports the changes of the EEG of human bodies during saturation exposure at different depths to different mixed gases. The results of the research show that the most obvious on EEG was the appearance of diffused slow waves, usually theta waves of 4-7 times/s, and delta waves of 2-3 times/s within individual subjects. The EEG changes at 50 m were more obvious than those at 36.5 m. With the prolonging of time under high pressure, the EEG had some improvements, for instance, the slow waves decreased and the alpha waves increased. There was a certain relationship between these changes

Effects of central and peripheral inputs on single pineal cell activity in the rat.

The influences exerted by central and peripheral afferents to the pineal gland have been studied in rats anesthetized with urethane (1.2 g/kg, i.p.). Spontaneous action potentials arising from the pinealocytes were recorded by means of glass micropipettes filled with 3 M NaCl containing a dye. The electrical stimulation of suprachiasmatic nucleus, superior cervical ganglia, sciatic nerve and retina evoked discharge changes in a significant number of pineal cells. However, a relatively higher proportion of pinealocytes failed to respond to these afferents. Three types of responses could be obse

Effect of frequency and rhythmicity on flicker light-induced hallucinatory phenomena.

Flicker light stimulation (FLS) uses stroboscopic light on closed eyes to induce transient visual hallucinatory phenomena, such as the perception of geometric patterns, motion, and colours. It remains an open question where the neural correlates of these hallucinatory experiences emerge along the visual pathway. To allow future testing of suggested underlying mechanisms (e.g., changes in functional connectivity, neural entrainment), we sought to systematically characterise the effects of frequency (3 Hz, 8 Hz, 10 Hz and 18 Hz) and rhythmicity (rhythmic and arrhythmic conditions) on flicker-ind

Electroencephalography in the Diagnosis of Genetic Generalized Epilepsy Syndromes.

Genetic generalized epilepsy (GGE) consists of several syndromes diagnosed and classified on the basis of clinical features and electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities. The main EEG feature of GGE is bilateral, synchronous, symmetric, and generalized spike-wave complex. Other classic EEG abnormalities are polyspikes, epileptiform K-complexes and sleep spindles, polyspike-wave discharges, occipital intermittent rhythmic delta activity, eye-closure sensitivity, fixation-off sensitivity, and photoparoxysmal response. However, admixed with typical changes, atypical epileptiform discharges are

Two visual mechanisms of photosensitivity.

PURPOSE: Photosensitive epilepsy is the most common of the "reflex" epilepsies. Precipitated by television viewing, flickering light, or specific visual patterns, it is the cause of seizures in 10% of young people with epilepsy. Photosensitivity is associated with two types of EEG abnormalities: photoparoxysmal responses (PPRs) and occipital spikes (OSs). It is unclear whether these abnormalities are mediated by different mechanisms, and furthermore, the clinical significance of OS is unknown. METHODS: By using our previously established population of patients with photosensitive epilepsy, al

Chirp stimulation: H-response short and dynamic.

BACKGROUND: Migraine patients have an increased photic-driving response. This 'H-response' (HR) has potential diagnostic value but it is time consuming. AIM: The aim of the study was to establish a fast and standardized test for the study of migraine biology and treatment. METHODS: We studied 11 migraine patients and 11 matched control participants. We used stroboscope flashes with a 'chirp'-like linear frequency-increase from 10 to 40 Hz. EEG was recorded from occipital electrodes. Power spectral density was calculated for the stimulus response and corrected for baseline. An HR-estimator wa

The circadian rhythm of typical absence seizures--the frequency and duration of paroxysmal discharges.

Twelve patients with typical absence seizures, aged five years two months to 10 years, were examined to clarify the circadian rhythm of 3 c/s spike-and-wave paroxysms (s-w paroxysms), by means of video-electroencephalography with telemetry. S-w paroxysms combined with clinical symptoms and continuing for more than four seconds were fewer during the afternoon than the morning and, moreover, during sleep. The correlation ratio between the frequency and duration of s-w paroxysms was r = -0.74, which was statistically significant (p less than 0.02). The duration of s-w paroxysms evoked by hyperven

Could cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation modulate the power spectral density of alpha-band in migrainous occipital lobe?

OBJECTIVE: To identify the correlation between cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and the power spectral density (PSD) of alpha-band on the occipital lobe of migraineurs. METHODS: Firstly, a cross-sectional study was performed to compare the PSD of alpha-band in the occipital cortex of 25 migraineurs versus 10 healthy volunteers in resting state and during repetitive light stimuli (RLS). Secondly, the patients participated in 12 sessions of cathodal (n = 11) or sham tDCS (n = 10) over the primary visual cortex (V1) to investigate the alpha-band PSD. RESULTS: The alpha-ba
