EDTA-enhanced electrokinetic remediation of aged electroplating contaminated soil assisted by combining dual cation-exchange membranes and circulation methods.

This paper introduces a novel method for ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-enhanced electrokinetic (EK) remediation by combining dual cation-exchange membranes and circulation methods for an aged electroplating soil contaminated by chrome (Cr), copper (Cu), and nickel (Ni). Three laboratory-scale EK experiments were carried out, including T1, the traditional EK process; T2, the traditional EDTA-enhanced EK process; and T3, the assisted EDTA-enhanced EK process. The results obtained show that removal of Cu and Ni in T3 was 3-10 times higher than after T1 and T2. However, the removal of Cr

The effects of humic acid on the chemical and biological properties of selenium in the environment.

To shed light on the causes of Kaschin-Beck disease, which can be prevented by supplementation of the diet with sodium selenite, the interactions between inorganic selenium compounds (selenite and selenate) and humic/fulvic acid were investigated. Selenate was found to be slowly reduced to selenite by humic acid in acidic solution. Selenite was adsorbed on manganese dioxide and iron(III) oxide from solution to a much greater degree than on kaolin, humic acid, Yongshu soil, or silicon dioxide. Feeding mice a diet supplemented with sodium selenite increased the selenium concentration in the kidn

Establishment and characterization of a novel cell line from spleen of humpback grouper (Cromileptes altivelis) and its application in pathogens susceptibility.

The humpback grouper (Cromileptes altivelis) is a marine fish of significant commercial value and has been identified as a potential candidate for marine aquaculture. In this research, a cell line named as CAS cells was developed from the spleen tissue of the humpback grouper. This cell line has been successfully passaged for over 100 passages, with most cells exhibiting a fibroblast-like morphology. After being cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen for three months, the survival rate of the cells was over 80 %. The sequencing of the COI and 18S rRNA genes has verified that the cell line is sourced

Bioprotective Lactic Acid Bacteria for Fresh Ready‑to‑Eat Salmon: Antilisterial Effects Without Compromising Product Quality.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are recognized as candidates for biopreservation because of their antagonistic activities. For industrial applications, however, the performance of individual LAB strains in specific food matrices must be carefully evaluated. This study investigated the biopreservative potential of four LAB strains (Carnobacterium maltaromaticum 35, C. maltaromaticum 55, C. divergens 468, and Leuconostoc gelidum 406) in vacuum-packed fresh ready-to-eat salmon portions stored at 4 ℃ for 22 days. Strain performance was assessed based on their growth properties, effects on the microbial

Systemic macrophage and neutrophil destruction by secondary necrosis induced by a bacterial exotoxin in a Gram-negative septicaemia.

Bacterial modulation of phagocyte cell death is an emerging theme in pathogenesis. Here we describe the systemic destruction of macrophages and neutrophils by the Gram-negative Photobacterium damselae ssp. piscicida (Phdp) in fish pasteurellosis, a deadly systemic infection. Following experimental inoculation, Phdp spreads by bacteraemia and colonizes the organs, producing a septicaemic infection, and secretes the apoptogenic exotoxin AIP56 which is systemically disseminated. In experimental and natural pasteurellosis, destruction of macrophages and neutrophils by secondary necrosis following

Stage-specific microbial dynamics and transmission pathways in salted seafood processing plants: A comparison of salted pollock roe and salted squid.

This study investigated microbial transmission dynamics and community structures across processing stages of two salted seafood products: salted pollock roe and salted squid. Samples of raw materials, environmental samples, and final products were collected from two processing plants (n = 87), and both culture-based analyses and 16S rRNA gene sequencing were performed. SourceTracker was used to track potential sources contributing to the final products. Microbial dynamics exhibited contrasting patterns between the two products due to differences in salting intensity and processing methods. In

Gut microbiome reorganization as a signal of physiological acclimation in escaped hybrid grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus ♂ × E. fuscoguttatus ♀).

The introduction of aquaculture-derived hybrid fishes into natural marine ecosystems raises critical questions regarding their physiological capacity to acclimate to novel environments. The hybrid grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus ♂ × E. fuscoguttatus ♀), a widely farmed teleost in southern China, has increasingly been reported in coastal habitats following escape events. However, the gut microbiome-associated mechanisms underlying its acclimation to natural conditions remain poorly understood. Here, we compared the gut microbiomes of cultured and wild-caught individuals collected from two coas

Development of molecular-based methods for determination of high histamine producing bacteria in fish.

Histamine (or scombroid) fish poisoning is a significant cause of food borne disease in the United States. In this study, we describe the development of a molecular-based technique which uses digoxigenin (DIG) labeled DNA probes for the detection of gram negative bacteria producing high amounts of histamine (>1000 ppm). A cocktail of PCR amplification fragments corresponding to a 709 bp fragment of the histidine decarboxylase (hdc) gene of four high producing bacteria (Morganella morganii, Enterobacter aerogenes, Raoultella planticola and Photobacterium damselae) was DIG-labeled and screened a

Microbial succession, identification, and spoilage potential of dominant bacteria in ready-to-eat salmon under different storage conditions.

As a popular high-value seafood with rich nutritional benefits, ready-to-eat salmon is highly susceptible to microbial spoilage, posing risks to its quality and food safety. This study investigated bacterial community dynamics in commercial ready-to-eat salmon under different temperatures (4 °C/25 °C) combined with packaging conditions (aerobic/vacuum) using high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and further explored the species-specific spoilage characteristics of five specific spoilage organisms (SSOs) via culture-dependent methods. The results revealed that bacteria under vacuum storage

Indirect photochemical transformations of acyclovir and penciclovir in aquatic environments increase ecological risk.

Acyclovir and penciclovir, 2 antiviral drugs, are increasingly detected in aquatic environments. The present study explores the natural photochemical transformation mechanisms and fate of these drugs, examining direct and indirect photochemical transformation under simulated sunlight irradiation. The 2 antiviral drugs are photostable under certain conditions but significantly degrade in the presence of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (DOM). The degradation rate associated with the drugs' indirect photochemical transformation scaled with chromophoric DOM concentration. Quenchers and sensi

Recombinant expression and immunogenicity evaluation of a TonB-dependent receptor of Vibrio parahaemolyticus.

This study constructed the recombinant plasmid of a TonB-dependent receptor from V. parahaemolyticus and evaluated the immunogenicity of the recombinant protein in mice. The TonB-dependent receptor gene (GI: 28901321) was obtained by PCR amplification and cloned into plasmid pET-32a (+). The recombinant plasmids were transformed into Escherichia coli BL21, and the protein expression was induced by isopropyl-β-d-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG). The 6 × His-tagged TonB-dependent receptor inclusion bodies were purified by Ni-NTA Agarose column and renatured by gradient urea dialysis. The soluble and

How Safe to Eat Are Raw Bivalves? Host Pathogenic and Public Health Concern Microbes within Mussels, Oysters, and Clams in Greek Markets.

Raw-bivalves consumption is a wide trend in Mediterranean countries. Despite the unambiguous nutritional value of seafood, raw consumption of bivalves may involve risks that could pose a significant threat to consumers' health. Their filter-feeding behavior is responsible for the potential hosting of a wide variety of microorganisms, either pathogenic for the bivalves or public health threats. Under this prism, the current study was conducted in an effort to evaluate the risk of eating raw bivalves originating from the two biggest seafood markets in Thessaloniki, the largest production area of

Simple detection of bacterioplankton using a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay: First practical approach to 72 cases of suspected drowning.

We developed a novel molecular tool for assisting the diagnosis of death by drowning and evaluated its validity in forensic practical cases. Two novel sets of loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) primers were designed to detect either representative freshwater (Aeromonas) or marine (Vibrio, Photobacterium, Listonella) bacterioplankton (aquatic bacteria) in one tube using the LAMP technique. The assay involves only mixing template DNA with seven reagents and incubating at 64°C for 80min and does not require special or expensive equipment because detection is based on visual observation

Transcriptomic Analysis and Machine Learning Identify Cross-Pathogen Biomarkers for Bacterial and Parasitic Infections in Silver Pomfret (Pampus argenteus).

Silver Pomfret is increasingly threatened by many diseases under intensive artificial culturing conditions, yet conserved host biomarkers across different infections remain poorly defined. In this study, we integrated transcriptomic datasets from independent infections with Cryptocaryon irritans, Nocardia seriolae, and Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae to identify shared host-response genes. By combining differential expression analysis with weighted gene co-expression network analysis, we prioritized six candidate genes associated with cross-pathogen infection responses. Comparison of the host-pathogen interactions between Pseudomonas plecoglossicida and Nocardia seriolea in a cell line derived from head kidney of yellow large croaker.

Nocardia seriolae and Pseudomonas plecoglossicida are two important pathogenic bacterial species in aquaculture, causing visceral granulomatous disease in large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) and other economically important fish species. However, the difference of host-pathogen interactions between these two bacteria have not been well defined. In present study, ultrastructural changes, cell cytotoxicity, production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), apoptosis, ferroptosis, and transcriptomic profiles induced by P. plecoglossicida and N. seriolae were evaluated in a head kidney originati

Culture-dependent bacteria in commercial fishes: Qualitative assessment and molecular identification using 16S rRNA gene sequencing.

Fish contamination has been extensively investigated along the Saudi coasts, but studies pertaining to bacterial pathogens are scarce. We conducted qualitative assessment and molecular identification of culture-dependent bacteria in 13 fish species from three coastal sites and a local fish market in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Bacterial counts of gills, skin, gut and muscle were examined on agar plates of Macconkey's (Mac), Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) and Thiosulfate Citrate Bile Salts (TCBS) culture media. Bacterial counts significantly differed between species, sources and feeding habits of examine
