Multi-Sensor Geometric Documentation of Cultural Heritage at Risk Across Inland, Coastal and Shallow-Water Environments.

Climate-related and environmental hazards affect cultural heritage sites in markedly different inland, coastal, lacustrine and underwater settings, creating documentation requirements that cannot be addressed by a single sensing approach. This study presents the multi-sensor geometric documentation of eight cultural heritage sites. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry was applied to six inland and coastal sites, while underwater photogrammetry, unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), acoustic sounding and a prototype green-wavelength flash LiDAR were used at three shallow-water sites. The ca

Characterization of Regional Morphological Changes in Sagittal Craniosynostosis Following Endoscopic Strip Craniectomy With Post-operative Helmeting: Predictors for Success.

BACKGROUND: Sagittal craniosynostosis (SC) restricts craniofacial growth perpendicular to the sagittal plane resulting in scaphocephaly. The cranium grows in the anterior-posterior dimension causing disproportionate changes, which can be corrected with either cranial vault reconstruction (CVR) or endoscopic strip craniectomy (ESC) combined with post-operative helmet therapy. ESC is performed at an earlier age, and studies demonstrate benefits in risk profile and morbidity compared to CVR, with comparable results if the post-operative banding protocol is strictly upheld. We aim to identify pred

Objectification of cranial vault correction for craniosynostosis by three-dimensional photography.

PURPOSE: Correction of craniosynostosis is necessary in predominant cases. Surgical planning usually requires a preoperative CT to estimate the bony and intracerebral structures. A postoperative CT scan would involve a significant dose of radiation, which carries an elevated risk of malignant tumor development in later life. This study was performed to demonstrate the quality of three-dimensional (3D) photogrammetry when objectifying perioperative changes in craniofacial surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with different premature craniosynostoses were analyzed photogrammetri

Use of Inertial Measurement Units for Detection of the Support Phases in Discus Throwing.

Photogrammetry applied to sports provides precise data on athlete positions and time instants, especially with digital motion capture systems. However, detecting and identifying specific events in athletic movements such as discus throwing can be challenging when using only images. For example, with high-speed video, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact frame when events like foot touchdown or takeoff occur, as contact between shoe and ground may span several frames. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) can detect maxima and minima in linear accelerations and angular velocities, helping to accur

Implementing a superimposition and measurement model for 3D sagittal analysis of therapy-induced changes in facial soft tissue: a pilot study.

AIM: 3D digital surface photogrammetry is an objective means of documenting the quantitative evaluation of facial morphology. However, there are no standardized superimposition and measurement systems for surveying soft tissue changes. The aim of this study was to present a superimposition and measurement model for three-dimensional analysis of therapy-induced sagittal changes in facial soft tissue and to ascertain its applicability based on the reproducibility of 3D landmark positions. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Twenty-nine children were examined (eight with cleft lip and palate, six with cleft pa

Craniofacial biostereometrics.

We believe that biostereometrics can be useful to the craniofacial surgeon in providing a highly accurate, reproducible diagnostic and presurgical tool that is inexpensive and noninvasive. It can help visualize complex pathologic bony abnormalities, resolve ambiguous CT scans, and predict soft-tissue changes secondary to alterations in bony contours when used in conjunction with CT scans and cephalograms.

New Horizons in Imaging and Diagnosis in Rhinoplasty.

Three-dimensional (3D) surface imaging has found its place in aesthetic surgery globally. The first attempt to use 3D surface imaging technique in clinic was in 1944 by Thalmaan, who used stereo photogrammetry to examine an adult with facial asymmetry and a baby with Pierre Robin syndrome. Three-dimensional photography is becoming more common allowing for a more dynamic facial evaluation, although it is associated with increased cost.

Structural anthropometric measurements for wheelchair mobile adults.

Structural anthropometric measurements for males and females were determined for the wheelchair mobile adults. A photogrammetry methodology was used to obtain the measurements. The various subject demographics including age, level or type of dysfunction as well as the specified anthropometric dimensions of the wheelchair mobile subjects were identified. The data would be useful for the design of industrial workstations for wheelchair mobile adults. Present workstation design principles based on seated able-bodied anthropometric measurements would not be suitable for this population.

Measurement accuracy of 3-Dimensional mapping technologies versus standard goniometry for angle assessment.

BACKGROUND: A specific aspect of the hypospadias phenotype that may contribute to long-term outcomes is the presence of ventral penile curvature and the adequacy of its surgical correction. The current gold standard to assess this angle is intraoperative goniometry of an erect penis. 3-dimensional (3D) mapping technologies may overcome the limitations of these traditional methods through their combination of digital image and geometric replication to produce consistent 3D digital forms of a physical structure. The aim of this study is to evaluate the measurement accuracy and reliability of han

Three-Dimensional Modeling and Extended Reality Simulations of the Cross-Sectional Anatomy of the Cerebrum, Cerebellum, and Brainstem.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the anatomy of the human cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem and their 3-dimensional (3D) relationships is critical for neurosurgery. Although 3D photogrammetric models of cadaver brains and 2-dimensional images of postmortem brain slices are available, neurosurgeons lack free access to 3D models of cross-sectional anatomy of the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem that can be simulated in both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). OBJECTIVE: To create 3D models and AR/VR simulations from 2-dimensional images of cross-sectionally dissected cadaveric specim

A digital technique for transferring the maxillomandibular relationship for complete arch implant rehabilitation in edentulous jaws.

A digital technique for transferring the maxillomandibular relationship using photogrammetry, an intraoral scanner, and a computer-aided design software program is described in a treatment involving immediate loading in a patient with mandibular edentulism. The edentulous mandible was located preoperatively in a centric occlusal relationship with a denture, and preoperative and postoperative cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data were aligned and merged based on bone markers. This technique, which allows the transfer of the presurgical maxillomandibular relationship during the immediate loa

Integration of cadaveric dissections with emerging digital technologies in a neurosurgery and neuroanatomy residency training program: Implementation and first-year experience.

Neuroanatomy remains a core competency in neurosurgical training, particularly in skull base education, where learners must integrate three-dimensional spatial understanding, radiologic correlation, and stepwise procedural knowledge. Cadaveric dissection remains foundational, but adjunctive digital tools may strengthen repeated visualization and anatomical review. We describe the educational rationale and implementation of integrating stereoscopic teaching, a stepwise digital application, photogrammetry, and virtual reality within an established neurosurgical skull base curriculum. A spot check for estimating stereophotogrammetric errors.

Good practice rules in the management of a movement analysis laboratory recommend that photogrammetric measurement errors are assessed, prior to every experimental session, using an ad hoc experiment referred to as a spot check. The paper proposes an inexpensive and easy to make spot check. The test uses a rigid rod carrying two markers and a target point taken on the line joining them and coinciding with the rod tip. The latter point is placed in a fixed and measured position in the laboratory frame and the markers are tracked while the rod is kept stationary and while it is manually made to

Towards Automated Craniosynostosis Diagnosis Using EfficientNet-Based Artificial Intelligence Models: A Two-Class and Multi-Class Approach.

Craniosynostosis is a congenital condition characterized by premature fusion of a newborn's cranial bones, impeding brain growth and causing disfiguration. Early diagnosis allows less invasive surgery and better outcomes, but diagnosis is often delayed and current practice often relies on computed tomography (CT), exposing infants to radiation. Routine head photography offers a safer alternative, and advances in artificial intelligence (AI) provide an opportunity to detect this condition earlier. We evaluated three state-of-the-art architectures: EfficientNet-B7, ResNet-50, and ResNet-152, tra
