Melatonin mediates photoperiod control of endocrine adaptations and humoral immunity in male Siberian hamsters.

Effects of photoperiod are mediated by the pineal gland in male Siberian hamsters. The hypothesis that the pineal hormone melatonin mediates the effects of short days (SD) to blunt select humoral and endocrine functions was tested. In the first study, regressed testes were found in pineal-intact controls transferred from long days (LD) to SDs (16 hr to 8 hr light/day); the rise in antigen-induced serum immunoglobulin (Ig) M was blunted and serum cortisol concentrations elevated compared with long-day controls. These effects of short-day were blocked in pinealectomized males moved from long to

Influence of photoperiod, time, and sex on hormone concentrations in collared lemmings (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus).

Collared lemmings (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus) of both sexes show seasonal changes in body mass and body composition. Previous studies using single-point sampling indicated that, in young males, these photoperiod-mediated changes are associated with changes in circulating growth hormone (GH), corticosterone (B), and thyroid hormones. The present study was conducted to (1) examine daily fluctuations in serum levels of GH, B, and thyroxine (T4) in animals exposed to long (22L:2D, "LD"), intermediate (16L:8D, "ID"), and short (8L:16D, "SD") photoperiods, (2) confirm that conclusions based on singl

The effects of photoperiod on olfactory c-fos expression in prairie voles, Microtus ochrogaster.

Reproduction stops among the majority of prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) during the winter. Short day lengths suppress male reproductive function dramatically in the laboratory, but photoperiod exerts only subtle effects on female reproductive function. Thus, the regulation of seasonal breeding in this species remains partially unspecified. In contrast to commonly studied rodents, female prairie voles do not undergo spontaneous estrous cycles; rather, they are induced into estrus by exposure to chemosignals expressed in conspecific male urine. In the present study, the hypothesis was test

Propranolol blockade of short photoperiod-induced gonadal regression: modification by melatonin injections or implants.

Male Syrian hamsters were exposed to short photoperiods (10L:14D) for ten weeks and received daily ethanolic saline (1:10), propranolol (125 micrograms, sc) or melatonin (25 micrograms, sc) injections at 16:45. Some hamsters also received melatonin implants (1 mg in 24 mg beeswax, sc) every two weeks in addition to the above treatments. Testicular weights were determined at the beginning, every three weeks, and at the end of the experiment. Serum hormone levels, hypothalamic amine levels and cortical amine levels were also determined at the conclusion of the experiment. Propranolol prevented t

Partitioning photoperiod- and chilling-driven cold hardiness in a Vitis riparia × V. vinifera F1 population.

Grapevine cold hardiness governs cultivar distribution and winter survival, and is a key constraint on viticulture in cold regions. We evaluated bud cold hardiness in a Vitis riparia × Vitis vinifera F1 population by differential thermal analysis across three environments (a California vineyard, an NDSU field, and an NDSU greenhouse), sampled nine times through the 2023-2024 dormant season. Mean low-temperature exotherms (LTEs) differed significantly among sampling times, and hierarchical clustering separated the genotypes into five hardiness classes defined by mean LTE, from very hardy (≤ -21

Circadian amplitude and CLOCK 3111 polymorphism predict morning leptin in Arctic residents, independent of photoperiod.

This hypothesis-driven study tested whether circadian amplitudes of wrist temperature (WTA), physical activity (PAA), and light exposure measured by actigraphy predicted morning leptin in 64 Arctic residents, and whether the CLOCK 3111 polymorphism (rs1801260) modulated these predictions. Actigraphy measures (circadian amplitudes of WT, PA, and light exposure) and morning leptin concentrations were assessed across seasons with contrasting photoperiods. Multivariate regression models identified leptin predictors. Post-hoc analyses examined WTA-leptin relationships, considering CLOCK 3111 genoty

Photoperiod-driven testicular DNA methylation in gonadotropin and sex steroid receptor promoters in Siberian hamsters.

Seasonal cycles in breeding, often orchestrated by annual changes in photoperiod, are common in nature. Here, we studied how change in photoperiod affects DNA methylation in the testes of a highly seasonal breeder: the Siberian hamster (Phodopus sungorus). We hypothesized that DNA methylation in promoter regions associated with key reproductive genes such as follicle-stimulating hormone receptor in the testes is linked to breeding and non-breeding states. Using Oxford Nanopore sequencing, we identified more than 10 million (10,151,742) differentially methylated cytosine-guanine (CpG) sites in

The Photoperiod-Driven Cyclical Secretion of Pineal Melatonin Regulates Seasonal Reproduction in Geese (Anser cygnoides).

The photoperiod is the predominant environmental factor that governs seasonal reproduction in animals; however, the underlying molecular regulatory mechanism has yet to be fully elucidated. Herein, Yangzhou geese (Anser cygnoides) were selected at the spring equinox (SE), summer solstice (SS), autumn equinox (AE), and winter solstice (WS), and the regulation of seasonal reproduction via the light-driven cyclical secretion of pineal melatonin was investigated. We show that there were seasonal variations in the laying rate and GSI, while the ovarian area decreased 1.5-fold from the SS to the AE.

How annual course of photoperiod shapes seasonal behavior of diploid and triploid oysters, Crassostrea gigas.

In this work, we study if ploidy (i.e. number of copies of chromosomes) in the oyster Crassostrea gigas may introduce differences in behavior and in its synchronization by the annual photoperiod. To answer to the question about the effect of the seasonal course of the photoperiod on the behavior of C. gigas according to its ploidy, we quantified valve activity by HFNI valvometry in situ for 1 year in both diploid and triploid oysters. Chronobiological analyses of daily, tidal and lunar rhythms were performed according the annual change of the photoperiod. In parallel, growth and gametogenesis

Phodopus campbelli detect reduced photoperiod during development but, unlike Phodopus sungorus, retain functional reproductive physiology.

Golden (Mesocricetus auratus) and Siberian (Phodopus sungorus) hamsters are widely used as animal models for seasonal reproduction; but M. auratus shows no developmental delay in short days until after sexual maturity, whereas P. sungorus juveniles delay development in short days. As the photoperiodic response of Phodopus campbelli is not well established, litters of the two Phodopus species were gestated and reared under long days (14 h light:10 h darkness) or short days (10 h light:14 h darkness) until 70 days of age. As expected, under short photoperiod P. sungorus showed reduced body, test

Concentrations of estradiol in ewe cerebrospinal fluid are modulated by photoperiod through pineal-dependent mechanisms.

In the ewe, seasonal anestrus results from an increased responsiveness of the hypothalamus to the negative feedback of estradiol (E2) on the gonadotropic axis under long-day conditions. However, this seasonal effect could also depend upon variable uptake of steroids by the brain. The aim of the present experiment was to compare the concentration of E2 in the blood plasma and in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the third ventricle in groups of ovariectomized, estradiol treated ewes maintained under short day (SD) or long day (LD) conditions and to study the involvement of the pineal gland in

Thermal acclimation, growth, and burst swimming of threespine stickleback: enzymatic correlates and influence of photoperiod.

Threespine sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) that had been reared in the laboratory under natural photoperiods were acclimated to 23 degrees and 8 degrees C in late spring under increasing day lengths and again in late fall under decreasing day lengths. The parents of these fish were from the anadromous Isle Verte population. In the spring, cold- and warm-acclimated fish grew at the same rates and attained similar condition factors (mass L(-3)), although food intake was considerably higher at 23 degrees C. As both groups had similar increases in mass and condition, the higher axial muscle

Effects of photointensity and photoperiod on milk yield and reproductive performance of Norwegian red cattle.

Relationships between light exposure, milk yield, and reproductive traits in Norwegian Red cattle were studied using data from 1538 farms in southern Norway during the darkest part of the year (November 1 to February 28). Production level was expressed as milk yield at first artificial insemination (AI) and 305-d milk yield. Reproductive performance was calculated using the following dependent variables: age at first AI, age at first calving, days open, calving interval, number of AI per cow, and nonreturn rate at 60 d. Days open and calving interval were both 4.0 d shorter, number of AI per c

Entrainment of the rat circadian clock controlling the pineal N-acetyltransferase rhythm depends on photoperiod.

Entrainment of the circadian clock as a function of time when a light stimulus is presented has been studied in detail while little attention has been paid to a role photoperiod may play in the resetting. To find out whether and how photoperiod affects the entrainment, resetting of the rat circadian pacemaker by delays in the evening light offset and by advances in the morning light onset, respectively, was studied in rats maintained either under a short photoperiod, with 8 h of light and 16 h of darkness per day (LD 8:16) or under a long, LD 18:6 photoperiod. To assess phase shifts of the clo

Effects of photoperiod and 6-methoxy-2-benzoxazolinone on male-induced estrus in prairie voles.

Prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) are characterized as facultative breeders with higher rates of reproductive activities observed during spring and summer than autumn and winter. The environmental factors regulating seasonal breeding in this species remain unspecified. Short day lengths inhibit reproductive organ development in male prairie voles in the laboratory, but these males remain fertile and capable of siring offspring; female prairie voles have been reported to be reproductively unresponsive to day length in the laboratory. The organization of estrus in this species is unusual in t

Influences of season and artificial photoperiod on stallions: testicular size, seminal characteristics and sexual behavior.

To investigate the influence of daylength on the seasonal reproductive cycle of stallions, 21 stallions were assigned to one of three treatments: control, ambient (natural) photoperiod; S-L, 8 h light and 16 h dark (8:16) for 20 wk beginning July 16, 1982 then 16:8 from December 2, 1982 until March 5, 1984; S-S, 8:16 from July 16, 1982 until March 1984. Temperature was not controlled and was similar for all groups. Total scrotal width (TSW) was measured every 4 wk throughout the experiment. During 10 periods, semen was collected and evaluated every other day for 3 wk and sexual behavior was as

Photoperiodic alteration modulates immune responses of freshwater snakehead teleost, Channa punctatus.

In fish, photoperiod has a significant influence on health by modulating physiological processes, including reproduction, growth, and stress response. However, its impact on the immune system is still unexplored. This study aimed to find the effect of different photoperiodic regimes on immune responses in Channa punctatus. Innate immune functions were evaluated by analyzing superoxide anion production, phagocytosis, and nitrite production in head kidney and spleen cells. Cell-mediated immune function was assessed by lymphocyte proliferation assay. The findings demonstrated that splenic phagocy

Photoperiod as a neuroendocrine regulator: A review on pineal-melatonin signaling and physiological plasticity in poultry.

Photoperiod, the cyclical exposure to light and darkness, is a master regulator of neuroendocrine function in poultry, primarily via the pineal-melatonin axis. The pineal gland translates photic cues into rhythmic melatonin secretion, which synchronizes circadian and seasonal biological processes, linking environmental signals to systemic homeostasis. This review systematically explores pineal-melatonin signaling network, highlighting its pivotal role in regulating reproduction, growth, metabolic homeostasis, immune competence, and stress resilience. Mechanistically, melatonin modulates core c

Photoperiods induced the circRNA differential expression in the thyroid gland of OVX+E2 ewes.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are non-coding RNAs newly identified and play important roles in RNA regulation. However, little is known regarding photoperiods induced circRNAs in the thyroid gland. In this study, we performed a comprehensive analysis of circRNA profiles in the thyroid gland of OVX+E2 ewes at different photoperiods by whole transcriptome sequencing. A total of 37,470 novel circRNAs were detected in different photoperiods (42 days of short photoperiod treatment, SP42; 42 days of long photoperiod treatment, LP42; SP42 transfer to LP42, SPLP42), with a total of 817 circRNAs for SP42-LP

Photoperiodic regulation of pituitary thyroid-stimulating hormone and brain deiodinase in Atlantic salmon.

Seasonal timing is important for many critical life history events of vertebrates, and photoperiod is often used as a reliable seasonal cue. In mammals and birds, it has been established that a photoperiod-driven seasonal clock resides in the brain and pituitary, and is driven by increased levels of pituitary thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and brain type 2 iodothyronine deiodinase (DIO2), which leads to local increases in triiodothyronine (T3). In order to determine if a similar mechanism occurs in fish, we conducted photoperiod manipulations in anadromous (migratory) Atlantic salmon (Salmo
