Sulfide-responsive transcriptional repressor SqrR functions as a master regulator of sulfide-dependent photosynthesis.

Sulfide was used as an electron donor early in the evolution of photosynthesis, with many extant photosynthetic bacteria still capable of using sulfur compounds such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) as a photosynthetic electron donor. Although enzymes involved in H2S oxidation have been characterized, mechanisms of regulation of sulfide-dependent photosynthesis have not been elucidated. In this study, we have identified a sulfide-responsive transcriptional repressor, SqrR, that functions as a master regulator of sulfide-dependent gene expression in the purple photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter caps

Extending the Farquhar-von Caemmerer-Berry photosynthesis model to account for various photorespiratory bypasses.

The Farquhar-von Caemmerer-Berry model is used as the standard to investigate leaf photosynthetic CO2- and light-responses in plant physiology. The model was developed for C3 photosynthesis with the native photorespiratory cycle. However, it is also frequently used to parameterize photosynthesis of plants with synthetic photorespiratory bypasses. Here, we point out that this latter practice is not advised for two reasons. First, unlike the native photorespiratory cycle, synthetic bypasses alter amounts and location of photorespiratory CO2 release. Second, requirements for reductants and ATP ar

What farmers think about using crop biotechnology to boost photosynthesis in rice and potato.

Boosting crop photosynthesis holds promise for meeting the needs of a growing population in a warming climate. However, improving photosynthesis with crop biotechnology is a new prospect for farmers and other key agrifood stakeholders, who will determine the success of such pioneering plant breeding initiatives. We conducted focus groups with 62 participants in four countries to understand farmer and agrifood stakeholder perspectives towards the aim of boosting photosynthesis through biotechnology in rice and potato, two of the world's most important crops. We found farmers were positive towar

Higher growth temperatures compound heatwave recovery of photosynthesis in different populations of Corymbia calophylla.

Global temperature rise is leading to increased stress and mortality in forests globally and is driving more frequent and intense heatwaves; however, the interaction between growth temperatures and heatwave events on tree populations remains poorly understood. We aimed to determine if gas exchange performance during and after heatwaves was determined by growth temperature, climate origin, and heatwave intensity in Corymbia calophylla saplings from four contrasting temperature-rainfall climate regions. Saplings were grown under warm and cool growth temperatures and exposed to a moderate or extr

Concurrent Temperature and Light Intensity Fluctuations Promote Stomatal Opening and Non-Steady State Photosynthesis.

In nature, fluctuations in light intensity (FL) are tightly coupled to rapid changes in leaf temperature (Tleaf), yet the short-term physiological effects of these concurrent drivers remain largely unresolved. Here, we combined rapid infrared induced Tleaf fluctuations with controlled step changes in light intensity for leaf gas exchange measurements to disentangle how each factor, and their interaction, affects stomatal conductance (gs) and net CO2 assimilation (A) in cucumber plants grown under constant light or FL. Modest but rapid increases in Tleaf (~3°C) alone triggered a pronounced wron

Transferring strongly reducing electrons to bidentate-adsorbed CO2 for efficient and selective formate photosynthesis.

The photocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide into formate offers substantial economic value; however, it suffers from the inherent efficiency-selectivity trade-offs. Here, we introduce phthalocyanine polymer dots coexposed with defined phthalocyanine nitrogen (Npc) and phthalocyanine nitrogen-hydrogen (Npc─H) sites as promising photocatalysts, achieving synergistic enhancement in efficiency and selectivity. Npc sites act as electron nodes, directing photogenerated electrons from photosensitizers toward carbon dioxide-adsorbed phthalocyanine, boosting the reactive charge density by 6.5-fold.

Coordinated Responses of Barley in Photosynthesis, Antioxidative System, and Stomatal Regulation Under Flufenoxuron Stress.

Flufenoxuron is extensively applied in agricultural pest control; however, its effects on plant physiological processes remain insufficiently understood. Hence, this study evaluated the effects of flufenoxuron on photosynthetic processes and stomatal regulation in barley. The findings indicated that flufenoxuron significantly reduced photosynthetic efficiency and gas-exchange capacity. Furthermore, flufenoxuron exposure markedly increased abscisic acid (ABA) in leaves but not in roots. Nonetheless, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and membrane lipid peroxidation were triggered by flufe

Florfenicol impairs photosynthesis and triggers oxidative stress in Phaeodactylum tricornutum: Physiological and transcriptomic evidence.

Florfenicol (FFC) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is used in aquaculture to effectively control bacterial infections in animals by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. However, its widespread application in aquaculture has increased environmental residues, posing potential toxic effects on non-target organisms in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we evaluated the toxic effects of FFC on the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum and the associated underlying mechanisms. The results showed that FFC significantly inhibited cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner, reduced photosynt

Diversity in the Rubisco temperature response kinetics and photosynthesis among four linted cotton species.

There is increasing urgency for more productive and resource-use-efficient crops to cope with changing climates. One possibility to improve crop productivity is to enhance photosynthesis. Here, we studied four linted cotton species (Gossypium hirsutum, G. barbadense, G. arboreum, and G. herbaceum) for diversity in the temperature response of Rubisco catalysis and impact on carbon assimilation. Compared with the model C3 plant tobacco, each cotton Rubisco had a slower carboxylation rate (kcatc) and higher CO2 affinity (lower KC21%O2) in response to temperature, with the specificity for CO2 over

Proton Reservoir in Covalent Organic Framework Compensating Oxygen Reduction Reaction Enhances Hydrogen Peroxide Photosynthesis.

The water oxidation reaction (WOR) with sluggish kinetics usually fails to adequately furnish protons to oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which ultimately constrains the overall efficiency of photocatalytic synthesis of H2O2, particularly in the absence of sacrificial agents. Herein, a class of hydroxyl groups (─OH) functionalized covalent organic framework (COF) is reported as a proton reservoir to compensate ORR for greatly improving the efficiency of H2O2 photosynthesis. It has been demonstrated that the incorporation of ─OH into the TFBP-DHBD (TFBP: 1,2,4,5-tetrakis-(4-formylphenyl)benzene

Proteomic and metabolic analysis of Moorella thermoacetica-g-C3N4 nanocomposite system for artificial photosynthesis.

Artificial photosynthesis by microbe-semiconductor biohybrid systems has been demonstrated as a valuable strategy in providing sustainable energy and in carbon fixation. However, most of the developed biohybrid systems for light harvesting employ heavy metal materials, especially cadmium sulfide (CdS), which normally cause environmental pollution and restrict the widespread of the systems. Herein, we constructed an environmentally friendly biohybirid system based on a typical acetogenic bacteria, Moorella thermoacetica, coupling with a carbon-based semiconductor, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3

Novel Cyclized Derivatives of Ferulic Acid as Potential Antiviral Agents through Activation of Photosynthesis.

To further develop new antiviral agents, several novel cyclized derivatives of ferulic acid were designed and synthesized. Their antiviral activities were evaluated against the cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV), and tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV). The results showed that some ferulic acid derivatives exhibited desirable antiviral activities. Particularly, compound 5e exhibited excellent protective activities against CMV, PMMoV, and TSWV, with EC50 values of 167.2, 102.5, and 145.8 μg mL-1, respectively, which were superior to those obtained for trans-ferulic acid

Structure-Activity Relationships of Hierarchical Three-Dimensional Electrodes with Photosystem II for Semiartificial Photosynthesis.

Semiartificial photosynthesis integrates photosynthetic enzymes with artificial electronics, which is an emerging approach to reroute the natural photoelectrogenetic pathways for sustainable fuel and chemical synthesis. However, the reduced catalytic activity of enzymes in bioelectrodes limits the overall performance and further applications in fuel production. Here, we show new insights into factors that affect the photoelectrogenesis in a model system consisting of photosystem II and three-dimensional indium tin oxide and graphene electrodes. Magnesium and manganese affect photosynthesis, essential oil composition and phenolic compounds of Tanacetum parthenium.

The accumulation of plant defense metabolites is closely associated with the concentration of nutrient elements, yet data related to the interactive effects of two nutrients on the deployment of phenolics and terpenoids are scare. In the present study, the interaction between magnesium (Mg) and manganese (Mn) on nutrient uptake, photosynthesis, oxidative status and the accumulation of phenolics and terpenoids in the leaves of feverfew plants grown at different concentrations of Mg and Mn was investigated. Nutrient uptake and photosynthesis were associated with the amount of applied Mg but coul

Effects of high CO2 levels on dynamic photosynthesis: carbon gain, mechanisms, and environmental interactions.

Understanding the photosynthetic responses of terrestrial plants to environments with high levels of CO2 is essential to address the ecological effects of elevated atmospheric CO2. Most photosynthetic models used for global carbon issues are based on steady-state photosynthesis, whereby photosynthesis is measured under constant environmental conditions; however, terrestrial plant photosynthesis under natural conditions is highly dynamic, and photosynthetic rates change in response to rapid changes in environmental factors. To predict future contributions of photosynthesis to the global carbon

Photoperiod and temperature influence cadmium's effects on photosynthesis-related gene transcription in Chlorella vulgaris.

Routine metal compound toxicity tests are performed at one constant photoperiod and temperature. There is little knowledge about the interactions between metal compound toxicity and photoperiod or temperature. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of photoperiod and temperature on cadmium (Cd) toxicity in the fresh alga, Chlorella vulgaris, both singly and in combination. Exposure to 2 or 4 microM Cd alone significantly decreased the transcription of the photosynthesis-related genes psbA, psaB and rbcL. Three-way ANOVA analysis showed that both temperature and photoperiod intera

Design Principles of Plant Thermotolerance: Integrating Photosynthesis, Reproduction, and Field Resilience in a Warming Climate.

Global food security is increasingly threatened by climate change, as rising temperatures compromise the yields of major staple crops, including wheat, rice, and maize. Enhancing plant thermotolerance has therefore become a critical priority for sustaining agricultural productivity. However, plant heat-stress responses have often been described as fragmented and pathway-specific, limiting their translation into effective crop improvement strategies. Here, we synthesize current knowledge of plant responses to heat stress and reframe them as an integrated set of design principles centered on pre

PeGLK1-1 Enhances Photosynthesis by Promoting Carbon Fixation Capacity of the Calvin Cycle in Bamboo.

The greenhouse effect, primarily driven by CO2 is changing the global climate and threatening ecosystem and human sustainability. Bamboo plays an integral role in mitigating climate change with its excellent photosynthetic carbon fixation capacity. The Golden2-like (GLK) transcription factor is a critical regulator of photosynthesis. In this study, we identified four GLK members in moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis), among which PeGLK1-1 functioned as a principal regulator of photosynthesis. Overexpressing PeGLK1-1 significantly enhanced the carbon fixation capacity of transgenic rice under el
