Long-Term Physiological Adaptations Induced by Short-Interval High-Intensity Exercises: An RCT Comparing Active and Passive Recovery.

Background: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is one of the most debated methods involving several parameters that could be modulated, but the long-term adaptations it induces are still unclear. This investigation aimed to evaluate the efficacy of running and whole-body exercises with high-intensity (>80% heart rate) short intervals (30 s) in body composition and physical performance and compare the effects between groups with active (AR) or passive recovery (PR), both in males and females. Methods: Eighteen trained young adults (55.56% ♀) were randomly allocated to the PR (n = 9, 23.09

Greater exercise tolerance in COPD during acute interval, compared to equivalent constant-load, cycle exercise: physiological mechanisms.

KEY POINTS: Exercise intolerance is common in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. In patients with COPD, we compared an interval exercise (IE) protocol (alternating 30 s at 100% peak work rate (WRpeak ) with 30 s at 50% WRpeak ) with moderate-intensity constant-load exercise (CLE) at 75% WRpeak , which yielded the same work rate. Exercise endurance time and total work output were almost twice as high for IE than CLE. At exercise isotime (when work completed was the same between IE and CLE), IE was associated with less dynamic hyperinflation, lower blood lactate concentration

Physiological and proteomics analyses reveal the mechanism of Eichhornia crassipes tolerance to high-concentration cadmium stress compared with Pistia stratiotes.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution is an environmental problem worldwide. Phytoremediation is a convenient method of removing Cd from both soil and water, but its efficiency is still low, especially in aquatic environments. Scientists have been trying to improve the ability of plants to absorb and accumulate Cd based on interactions between plants and Cd, especially the mechanism by which plants resist Cd. Eichhornia crassipes and Pistia stratiotes are aquatic plants commonly used in the phytoremediation of heavy metals. In the present study, we conducted physiological and biochemical analyses to compare

Comparative transcriptome and physiological analyses unveil differential responses of Panax ginseng adventitious roots to iron vs. zinc deficiency.

Trace elements iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) are essential nutrients for plant growth and development, and their deficiency significantly inhibits the physiological metabolism and bioactive compound accumulation of medicinal plants. As a high-value medicinal plant, Panax ginseng C.A. Mey. is susceptible to mineral nutrient stress, affecting its quality and yield. However, current research on the genetic regulatory mechanisms of Fe and Zn is relatively scarce. This study conducted a fundamental investigation by comparing the morphology, physiological metabolism, and transcriptome of P. ginseng advent

Comparative Physiological and Transcriptomic Analyses Revealed Key Metabolic Pathways Involved in Ethanol Fermentation in Nanguo Pears during Ripening.

Nanguo pears produce a distinctive "alcoholic taste" during ripening, while Jingbai pears do not. To better understand the regulatory mechanism of "alcohol taste" formation in Nanguo pears, differences in ethanol fermentation-related metabolisms between the two cultivars were investigated. Compared to Jingbai pears, Nanguo pears had higher activities of pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC) and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and contents of pyruvate, acetaldehyde, and ethanol during ripening. Nanguo pears generally showed higher starch degradation and higher levels of acetyl-CoA and citric acid but lower

A Comparative Study of Intramuscular Alfaxalone- or Ketamine-Based Anesthetic Mixtures in Gray Squirrels Undergoing Gonadectomy: Clinical and Physiologic Findings.

The gray squirrel is one of the most common invasive species in Europe, whose presence is dangerous for the survival of the European red squirrel. To cope with this biological invasion and to safeguard biodiversity, the LIFE+U-SAVEREDS project aims to protect the red squirrel, by limiting the growth of the current population of gray squirrels and simultaneously promoting their eradication with surgical sterilization. This study compares two different anesthetic protocols, including dexmedetomidine (40 µg/kg) and midazolam (0.3 mg/kg) associated with ketamine (15 mg/kg; n = 25 squirrels) or alf

A Comparative Study Between Allometric Scaling and Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic Modeling for the Prediction of Drug Clearance From Neonates to Adolescents.

The objective of this study was to compare the predictive performance of an allometric model with that of a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model to predict clearance or area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) of drugs in subjects from neonates to adolescents. From the literature, 10 studies were identified in which clearance or AUC of drugs from neonates to adolescents was predicted by PBPK models. In these published studies, drugs were given to children either by intravenous or oral route. The allometric model was an age-dependent exponent (ADE) model for the prediction of

A randomized crossover trial comparing the acute physiological and psychological effects of botanical formulations of oral psilocybin, oral psilocin, and sublingual psilocin.

BACKGROUND: Psilocybin, a serotonergic psychedelic found in hallucinogenic mushrooms, is metabolized to psilocin, the compound responsible for its psychoactive effects. Psilocybin has demonstrated therapeutic potential for neuropsychiatric conditions. While recent trials have primarily used orally administered synthetic psilocybin, alternative formulations and delivery methods may offer therapeutic advantages, yet the effects of these approaches remain poorly characterized. AIMS: To compare the pharmacodynamic profiles and tolerability of oral psilocybin, oral psilocin, and sublingual psiloci

Physiological specificity of muscle-strengthening activity: a comparative analysis of associations with arthritis and cardiovascular disease prevalence in U.S. adults (NHIS 2024).

OBJECTIVE: Physical activity guidelines recommend both aerobic physical activity (APA) and muscle-strengthening activity (MSA) for chronic disease prevention. MSA benefits musculoskeletal health, whereas APA supports cardiovascular health, but epidemiological studies seldom separate MSA-specific associations from those of APA. We examined whether MSA relates more strongly to arthritis than to cardiovascular disease (CVD). METHODS: We analyzed 31,238 non-institutionalized U.S. adults from the 2024 National Health Interview Survey in a cross-sectional design. Outcomes were self-reported physici

Comparing Cardiac Output Differences in Patients With Fontan Physiology Between High and Low Tidal Volume Strategies: A Randomized, Crossover Trial.

BACKGROUND: Single ventricle congenital heart disease patients palliated to Fontan physiology lack a ventricle to generate pulmonary blood flow. Positive pressure mechanical ventilation reduces pulmonary blood and therefore cardiac output as compared to regular, negative pressure ventilation. There is controversy as to whether lower or higher tidal volumes are optimal for mechanical ventilation. AIM: This crossover trial aimed to determine whether higher versus lower tidal volumes would be optimal for systemic cardiac output. METHODS: The authors recruited Fontan patients < 18 years old pres

A comparative, randomised MRI study of the physiological and appetitive responses to gelling (alginate) and non-gelling nasogastric tube feeds in healthy men.

Inclusion in nasogastric tube feeds (NGTF) of acid-sensitive, seaweed-derived alginate, expected to form a reversible gel in the stomach, may create a more normal intragastric state and modified gastrointestinal responses. This may ameliorate NGTF-associated risk of diarrhoea, upper gastrointestinal symptoms and appetite suppression. In a randomised, crossover, comparison study, undertaken in twelve healthy males, an alginate-containing feed (F + ALG) or one that was alginate-free (F-ALG) (300 ml) was given over 1 h with a 7-14-d washout period between treatments. Physiological and metabolic dynamism in mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal Oryza sativa (var. Varsha) subjected to Zn and Cd toxicity: a comparative study.

Arable lands getting contaminated with heavy metals have a very high negative impact on crop plants. The establishment of the mycorrhizal association with crop plants is a sustainable strategy to overcome metal toxicity. The major aim of this study was to analyze mycorrhizae-mediated alterations on the physiology and metabolism of Oryza sativa, as well as the impact of these alterations in the metal tolerance potential of the host on exposure to cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) stresses. For this, 45 d old O. sativa (var. Varsha) plants inoculated with Claroideoglomus claroideum were exposed to 1.95

Comparative characterization and expression analysis of the four Old Yellow Enzyme homologues from Shewanella oneidensis indicate differences in physiological function.

Shewanella oneidensis contains four genes that encode proteins that have high sequence identity with yeast OYE (Old Yellow Enzyme, an NADPH oxidoreductase), the well-studied archetype of the OYE protein family. The present paper describes the first comparative study of OYEs that are present in a single bacterial species, performed to gain insight into their biochemical properties and physiological importance. The four proteins [named SYE1-SYE4 (Shewanella Yellow Enzyme 1-4)] were expressed as glutathione S-transferase fusion proteins in Escherichia coli. The yield of SYE2, however, was too low
