The primary module in Norway spruce defence signalling against H. annosum s.l. seems to be jasmonate-mediated signalling without antagonism of salicylate-mediated signalling.

A key tree species for the forest industry in Europe is Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.]. One of its major diseases is stem and butt rot caused by Heterobasidion parviporum (Fr.) Niemelä & Korhonen, which causes extensive revenue losses every year. In this study, we investigated the parallel induction of Norway spruce genes presumably associated with salicylic acid- and jasmonic acid/ethylene-mediated signalling pathways previously observed in response to H. parviporum. Relative gene expression levels in bark samples of genes involved in the salicylic acid- and jasmonic acid/ethylene-me

Persistent effects of ozone on needle water loss and wettability in Norway spruce.

Four-year-old, seed-grown trees of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) were exposed in open-top chambers to charcoal-filtered air (8 h daily mean 54 microg O(3) m(-3)) over three consecutive summers (1986-1988). In mid-May 1988, before the third season of fumigation and more than 7 months after exposure to ozone the previous summer had terminated, daily rates of transpiration from intact shoots and water loss from excised needles were measured together with the amount of wax on the needle surface. In mid-July, 92 days after the beginning of the third year of exposure, the wettability of ne

Geosmithia associated with hardwood-infesting bark and ambrosia beetles, with the description of three new species from Poland.

Geosmithia species (Hypocreales, Ascomycota) are associates of bark beetles and other arthropods. One species, Geosmithia morbida, is a virulent tree pathogen of Juglans nigra. To date, 10 Geosmithia spp. from conifer-infesting, and at least 23 species from hardwood associated bark beetles have been reported from Europe. The aim of this study was to survey Geosmithia spp. associated with 18 bark and ambrosia beetle species in hardwood ecosystems in Poland. In addition, we evaluated the pathogenicity of the six Geosmithia species by inoculating Acer, Fagus, Quercus, Tilia and Ulmus seedlings. O

Deposited pollen from dominant tree genera drives nutrient composition of throughfall in European forests.

Atmospheric deposition is a critical driver of biogeochemical cycling in forest ecosystems. Among the pathways of deposition, throughfall (TF) - precipitation that has interacted with the forest canopy - plays a significant role in the input of atmospheric substances and canopy leachates to the forest floor. We investigated the influence of airborne pollen deposited in TF on its chemical composition across 60 Level II plots of the ICP Forests network in eight European countries. Based on 196 TF samples collected during the 2018 early vegetative season, we identified 53 pollen taxa, with Pinus,

Fate of a biodegradable plastic in forest soil: Dominant tree species and forest types drive changes in microbial community assembly, influence the composition of plastisphere, and affect poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) degradation.

Poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA) degradation and its plastisphere microbiome in cropland soils have been studied; however, such knowledge is limited in the case of forest ecosystems. In this context, we investigated: i) the impact of forest types (conifer and broadleaved forests) on the plastisphere microbiome and its community assembly, ii) their link to PBSA degradation, and iii) the identities of potential microbial keystone taxa. We determined that forest type significantly affected microbial richness (F = 5.26-9.88, P = 0.034 to 0.006) and fungal community composition (R2 = 0.38

Genes Sufficient for Synthesizing Peptidoglycan are Retained in Gymnosperm Genomes, and MurE from Larix gmelinii can Rescue the Albino Phenotype of Arabidopsis MurE Mutation.

The endosymbiotic theory states that plastids are derived from a single cyanobacterial ancestor that possessed a cell wall. Peptidoglycan (PG), the main component of the bacteria cell wall, gradually degraded during plastid evolution. PG-synthesizing Mur genes have been found to be retained in the genomes of basal streptophyte plants, although many of them have been lost from the genomes of angiosperms. The enzyme encoded by bacterial MurE genes catalyzes the formation of the UDP-N-acetylmuramic acid (UDP-MurNAc) tripeptide in bacterial PG biosynthesis. Knockout of the MurE gene in the moss Ph

Benchmarking Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry against Conventional Methods for the Characterization of Solvent-Fractionated Kraft Lignin.

Lignins are heterogeneous aromatic biopolymers whose structural complexity depends strongly on botanical origin and isolation process. Comprehensive characterization therefore typically relies on multiple complementary techniques, including gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, resulting in labor-intensive workflows and complex data integration. Here, ultrahigh-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR

A degree day model for predicting voltinism of the invasive balsam woolly adelgid (Hemiptera: Adelgidae) in northern Utah.

Balsam woolly adelgid, Adelges piceae (Ratz.) (BWA), invasive in North America, was first detected on subalpine fir [Abies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt.] in several northern Utah counties in 2017. BWA phenology is known to vary by elevation and climate; a degree-day (DD) model focused on population expansion into the Intermountain West is needed. Bark samples were collected weekly from infested subalpine fir in early summer through late fall at 5 northern Utah sites from August 2020 to December 2022. At a single site, additional samples were collected biweekly to monthly during winter and spring. T

Four new Ophiostoma species associated with conifer- and hardwood-infesting bark and ambrosia beetles from the Czech Republic and Poland.

Fungi under the order Ophiostomatales (Ascomycota) are known to associate with various species of bark beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae). In addition this group of fungi contains many taxa that can impart blue-stain on sapwood and some are important tree pathogens. A recent survey that focussed on the diversity of the Ophiostomatales in the forest ecosystems of the Czech Republic and Poland uncovered four putative new species. Phylogenetic analyses of four gene regions (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region, ß-tubulin, calmodulin, and translation elongation factor 1-α) indicated that these four

Efficacy of topical resin lacquer, amorolfine and oral terbinafine for treating toenail onychomycosis: a prospective, randomized, controlled, investigator-blinded, parallel-group clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Norway spruce (Picea abies) produces resin to protect against decomposition by microbial pathogens. In vitro tests have shown that spruce resin has antifungal properties against dermatophytes known to cause nearly 90% of onychomycosis in humans. OBJECTIVES: To confirm previous in vivo observations that a topical resin lacquer provides mycological and clinical efficacy, and to compare this lacquer with topical amorolfine hydrochloride lacquer and systemic terbinafine for treating dermatophyte toenail onychomycosis. METHODS: In this prospective, randomized, controlled, investigator

Potato crop as a source of emetic Bacillus cereus and cereulide-induced mammalian cell toxicity.

Bacillus cereus, aseptically isolated from potato tubers, were screened for cereulide production and for toxicity on human and other mammalian cells. The cereulide-producing isolates grew slowly, the colonies remained small (~1 mm), tested negative for starch hydrolysis, and varied in productivity from 1 to 100 ng of cereulide mg (wet weight)(-1) (~0.01 to 1 ng per 10(5) CFU). By DNA-fingerprint analysis, the isolates matched B. cereus F5881/94, connected to human food-borne illness, but were distinct from cereulide-producing endophytes of spruce tree (Picea abies). Exposure to cell extracts (

Orientation behavior of the predator Laricobius nigrinus (Coleoptera: Derodontidae) to hemlock woolly adelgid and host tree odors in a multi-chambered olfactometer.

We studied the adult ambulatory response of the predator, Laricobius nigrinus Fender (Coleoptera: Derodontidae), to odors from its prey, Adelges tsugae Annand, the hemlock woolly adelgid, and foliage of hemlock woolly adelgid, host hemlocks (Tsuga spp.), and other conifers. Both the predator and hemlock woolly adelgid are apparently native to western North America, but the predator is being released in the eastern United States, which has different hemlock species, for biological control of a lineage of hemlock woolly adelgid inadvertently introduced from Japan. Ant Interactions with Aroid Infructescences (Araceae) Used as Temporary Nesting Sites, Cohabiting with a Complex Endophagous Insect Community in a Neotropical Rainforest.

Ants are abundant and diverse in the tropics, nesting in different forest layers and utilizing a wide range of nesting sites, from specialized to opportunistic. To describe the floral interactions of endophagous insects in the Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve (Mexico), samples of Araceae infructescences were collected during an annual cycle at different altitudes. Ten species of Araceae belonging to the genera Dieffenbachia (1), Philodendron (5), Syngonium (3) and Xanthosoma (1) were investigated. A total of 334 infructescences were sampled, of which only 5.1% were found to be infested by ants. H

Tensile-Tearing Fracture Analysis of U-Notched Spruce Samples.

Spruce wood (Picea Mariana) is a highly orthotropic material whose fracture behavior in the presence of U-shaped notches and under combined tensile-tearing loading (so-called mixed-mode I/III loading) is analyzed in this work. Thus, several tests are carried out on U-notched samples with different notch tip radii (1 mm, 2 mm, and 4 mm) under various combinations of loading modes I and III (pure mode I, pure mode III, and three mixed-mode I/III loadings), from which both the experimental fracture loads and the fracture angles of the specimens are obtained. Because of the linear elastic behavior

Differential aboveground-belowground adaptive strategies to alleviate N addition-induced P deficiency in two alpine coniferous forests.

Increasing atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has resulted in phosphorus (P) limitation in multiple terrestrial ecosystems, yet how plants coordinate aboveground and belowground strategies to adapt to such P deficiency remains unclear. In this study, we conducted a field N fertilization experiment in two alpine coniferous plantations (Picea asperata Mast. and Pinus armandii Franch.) with different soil N availability on the eastern Tibetan Plateau of China, to examine N addition effects on plant nutrient limiting status and plant adaptive strategies corresponding to aboveground P conservation

Differentiation of Acclimation Responses and Seedling Source Effects in Deciduous and Evergreen Conifer Seedlings Under Cross-Altitude Transplantation.

Understanding the acclimation responses of conifer species with different functional types in response to altitudinal gradient changes is of significance for deepening our knowledge of how plants cope with global climate change. This study focused on seedlings of larch (Larix principis-rupprechtii) and spruce (Picea meyeri) within the Pangquangou Nature Reserve in North-central China. By setting two seedling source altitudes (1600 m, 2400 m) and four transplant altitudes (1600 m, 1900 m, 2100 m, 2400 m), we compared the response characteristics of 20 functional traits, including light response

Methyl Mercury Formation in Hillslope Soils of Boreal Forests: The Role of Forest Harvest and Anaerobic Microbes.

Final harvest (clear-cutting) of coniferous boreal forests has been shown to increase streamwater concentrations and export of the neurotoxin methyl mercury (MeHg) to freshwater ecosystems.
