Hangover effects on aircraft pilots 14 hours after alcohol ingestion: a preliminary report.

Using a repeated measures counterbalanced design, the authors had 10 Navy P3-C Orion pilots fly two carefully designed simulated flights under control (no hangover) and hangover conditions. For the control condition, pilots drank no alcohol within 48 hours before the simulated flight. For the hangover condition, they flew 14 hours after drinking enough ethanol mixed with diet soft drinks to attain a blood alcohol concentration of 100 mg/dl. Pilot performance was worse in the hangover condition on virtually all measures but significantly worse on three of six variance measures and one of six pe

Medical fitness examination of commercial pilots: new criteria for evaluation of vestibular tests.

In medical fitness examinations of commercial pilots, extensive vestibular investigations should be conducted. In particular, the pendular test, as a weak rotational stimulation method, can disclose central vestibular disorders. Thus, the central nystagmus tracing can be considered as a sign of irritation of vestibular centers, most frequently as a consequence of head trauma, a finding that may influence the decision in the enlistment of the pilot. In contrast, a small nystagmus amplitude tracing is observed in cases of insufficient blood supply, occurring mostly in elderly persons. Therefore,

Degenerative cervical spine changes among early career fighter pilots: a 5-year follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: Degenerative changes of the cervical spine often cause disability and flight duty limitations among Finnish Air Force (FINAF) fighter pilots. We aimed to study the effect of +Gz exposure on degenerative changes in the cervical spine by comparing cervical MRIs of FINAF fighter pilots and controls. METHODS: At baseline, the volunteer study population consisted of 56 20-year-old FINAF male fighter pilots (exposure group) and 56 21-year-old Army and Navy cadets (control group). Both groups underwent MRI of the cervical spine at the baseline and after 5 years. Degenerative changes ev

Pilots' age and incidents in helicopter emergency medical services: a 5-year observational study.

BACKGROUND: Helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) are considered to have a higher risk of incidents compared to other airborne operations. As HEMS poses high cognitive demands, age-related cognitive changes of helicopter pilots might become a safety risk. The aim of this study was to estimate the association between the age of pilots and incidents in HEMS. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of incidents during HEMS operations of one Austrian and two German air rescue organizations between 2007 and 2011. The sample included 257 regularly operating HEMS pilots. Age

Mortality risk in a birth cohort of commuter air carrier and air taxi pilots.

Commuter and air taxi pilots have higher work-related death rates than most other occupational groups. In this longitudinal study, the authors examined the mortality in a cohort of 3263 commuter and air taxi pilots. With adjustment for age, proportional hazards modeling revealed that termination or downgrading of medical certificates during the 11-year follow-up was associated with a significantly increased risk of overall mortality (relative risk, 2.32; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.43-3.77). Relative to the general population with similar demographic characteristics, commuter air carrier

Prevalence of cervical and lumbar disc disorders in pilots of the German armed forces.

On-duty and off-duty, military pilots of the Bundeswehr frequently complain of pains in the spine curtailing performance, reducing service hours and eventually leading even to unfitness for military flying duties. Such disorders may be caused by intervertebral disc alterations. In the period comprising August 1994 and December 1998, 286 pilots (8.1% of all A/C pilots or weapon systems officers of the Bundeswehr) with disc-related disorders in the areas of the cervical and of the lumbar spine were examined at the German Air Force Institute of Aviation Medicine. Helicopter pilots had significant

The Tripartite Aviation Risk Perception Scale (TARPS): Development and preliminary scale validation in pilots.

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND: Accurate risk perception is a cornerstone of aviation safety, yet human error remains a primary cause of accidents, often attributed to deficiencies in pilot decision-making. Risk perception is regularly invoked to explain pilot decision making under uncertainty, yet aviation measurement has often relied on scenario ratings that infer "risk perception" from judgments about hypothetical situations that conflate affective reactions with experiential heuristics. OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed at the development and preliminary validation of the 15-item Tripartite

From Local Pilots to National Implementation: A Journey Towards Free HPV Vaccination in China.

China recently became the 155th country to provide free vaccination to all 13-year-old girls with two doses of a domestic bivalent HPV vaccine in October 2025. Such a policy change aligns with the Immunization Agenda 2030, which expects more investment of domestic resources into immunization rather than heavily depending on external donor funding support. This review examines the policy-making evolution process and analyzes how the final decision was made at the national level, using the Multiple Streams Framework. Unlike traditional NIP expansion, which adopts a top-down decision-making strat

Monitoring military pilots with textile sensors: physiological responses and signal quality under extreme conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Military pilots are exposed to severe physiological challenges during their missions that may affect cognitive and physical performance. Therefore, continuous monitoring potentially provides critical insights about the impact of extreme condition exposure on the fitness to fly of military pilots. METHODS: We applied a textile-based monitoring system during training sessions with pilot aspirants to investigate the impact of hypobaric hypoxia and high G-force exposures on the signal quality obtained for a 1-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) and chest excursions. The physiological varia

Differences in Cervical Muscle Activity of Pilots and Nonpilots With and Without Neck Pain.

INTRODUCTION: Neck pain is common and often persistent, especially among military pilots exposed to high physical demands during flight. These conditions may alter neuromuscular control, contributing to chronic symptoms. While surface electromyography can detect pain-related changes in muscle activity, little is known about these patterns during low-load exercises in pilots. This study identifies differences in cervical muscle activity between pilots and nonpilots with and without neck pain. METHODS: A total of 18 military pilots and 23 control subjects were categorized into symptomatic and a
