Signal detection in complex comodulated backgrounds by normal-hearing and cochlear-impaired listeners.

Comodulation masking release (CMR) was investigated in normal-hearing and cochlear-impaired listeners. The narrow-band masker centered on the tonal signal was flanked by a series of other narrow noise bands, some of which had temporal envelopes that were the same as that of the on-signal band (comodulated bands) and some of which had different temporal envelopes (codeviant bands). Previous research using such stimuli with normal-hearing listeners indicated that CMR was often substantially reduced when two codeviant bands were present at spectral locations close to the signal frequency, but tha

[Experience with electrostimulation of the acoustic nerve before cochlea implantation].

The electrical stimulation of the acoustic nerve plays an essential role in the selection of patients for cochlea implantation. The performance of a deaf ear under the conditions of electrical stimulation can be assessed by means of the pre-operative promontory test using a transtympanic needle electrode. Five components of this test were applied to 48 patients: the determination of perception threshold and upper comfortable level for pulse and burst stimulation, the pitch test, the temporal difference test and the gap detection test. The mean values emerging from these examinations may be use

The effect of loud noise on the vestibular system.

The effect of a 2 sec 113--123 dB ISO pure tone stimulus on ENG was studied. The material consisted of patients with operated and unoperated otosclerosis, normal ears, patients with sensorineural defects, and cases of chronic otitis media. ENG changes were found in 45% of patients with sensorineural hearing loss, in 35% of operated otosclerotics, in 15% of unoperated otosclerotics, in 15% of patients with chronic media, but in none of the normal-hearing patients. Most of the patients showing ENG changes felt dizzy. These results seem to imply a possible risk to patients with sensorineural hear

Superior orientation discrimination and increased peak gamma frequency in autism spectrum conditions.

While perception is recognized as being atypical in individuals with autism spectrum conditions (ASC), the underlying mechanisms for such atypicality are unclear. Here we test the hypothesis that individuals with ASC will show enhanced orientation discrimination compared with neurotypical observers. This prediction is based both on anecdotal report of superior discriminatory skills in ASC and also on evidence in the auditory domain that some individuals with ASC have superior pitch discrimination. In order to establish whether atypical perception might be mediated by an imbalance in the ratio

Cumulative Enhancement in Naïve L3 Tone Perception: The Perception of Pitch and Phonation Type.

Previous research has shown that tonal second language (L2) experience can enhance the third language (L3) tone perception of native speakers of non-tone languages. However, tone is a multidimensional concept, and phonation type also serves as an important cue in the tone perception of some tone languages. In this study, 38 native English speakers of different Mandarin proficiency levels, 15 native English and 15 native Mandarin speakers, all of whom were naïve to the Wenzhou Wu dialect, participated in an AX discrimination task. The Wenzhou dialect was used for the naïve L3 stimuli because of

Enhanced Contour-Deviant Mismatch Negativity and Mnemonic Representations in Older Musicians.

Instrumental music performance is associated with enhanced perceptual processing as evidenced by auditory discrimination and speech-in-noise perception. However, little is known about the extent to which auditory perceptual processes support cognition in aging. We investigated whether music training enhances perceptual precision in 26 older amateur and professional musicians (62-85 years, 16 females) and 25 older nonmusicians (61-82 years, 13 females). Participants completed a novel auditory mnemonic discrimination paradigm while electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded. The mismatch negativi

Musical pitch and timbre perception deficits in tinnitus with normal hearing: the role of extended high-frequency sensitivity and spectral-temporal resolution.

In individuals with tinnitus, subtle changes in extended high-frequency (EHF) hearing and suprathreshold auditory processing may contribute to difficulties in complex auditory domains such as music perception. This study aimed to examine musical pitch and timbre perception, spectral-temporal resolution, and EHF hearing in normal-hearing individuals with and without tinnitus, while exploring the relationships among these measures. Individuals with bilateral tinnitus (n = 28) and without tinnitus (n = 28) were included, and all participants had normal conventional audiograms. Participants were a

Implicit auditory sensory memory and short-term memory for musical and verbal stimuli in children with cochlear implants.

The spectrally degraded signal delivered by cochlear implants (CIs) has been suggested to constrain the encoding and temporary retention of sequential auditory information. However, research on short-term memory (STM) in children with CIs has predominantly focused on the verbal domain, with musical STM and implicit auditory sensory memory receiving comparatively limited attention. This study investigated the domain-specific nature of auditory STM in children with CIs relative to typically hearing (TH) peers, alongside implicit auditory sensory memory and music perception. Seventy-five children

Phonation differentiation by non-contact laryngeal magnetomyography.

Phonation is important for our daily communication and requires the activation of internal and external laryngeal muscles, which can be recorded by electromyography (EMG) using surface or needle electrodes. Here we present a new noncontact method, laryngeal magnetomyography. As a proof-of-concept, we investigated the feasibility of differentiating various vocalization conditions using laryngeal MMG in two healthy subjects using optically pumped magnetometers (OPM). We recorded magnetic muscle activity of the larynx and neighboring cervical muscles using a 3 × 5 array of OPMs. Subjects vocalize

Speech- and sound-segmentation in dyslexia: evidence for a multiple-level cortical impairment.

Developmental dyslexia involves deficits in the visual and auditory domains, but is primarily characterized by an inability to translate the written linguistic code to the sound structure. Recent research has shown that auditory dysfunctions in dyslexia might originate from impairments in early pre-attentive processes, which affect behavioral discrimination. Previous studies have shown that whereas dyslexic individuals are deficient in discriminating sound distinctions involving consonants or simple pitch changes, discrimination of other sound aspects, such as tone duration, is intact. We hypo

The role of binaural input in music perception: Evidence from adults with single-sided deafness.

Single-sided deafness (SSD) is characterized by unilateral auditory deprivation, which disrupts binaural hearing. This study aimed to evaluate music perception in adults with SSD using behavioral measures and subjective ratings. Thirty adults with SSD were compared with 54 normal-hearing (NH) listeners tested under binaural (NH-B, n = 27) and simulated acute monaural (NH-M, n = 27) conditions in a free-field setup. Behavioral music perception was assessed using the Clinical Assessment of Music Perception (CAMP) battery, including Pitch Direction Discrimination (PDD), Timbre Recognition (TR), a

Reduced Learning of Sound Categories in Dyslexia Is Associated with Reduced Regularity-Induced Auditory Cortex Adaptation.

A main characteristic of dyslexia is poor use of sound categories. We now studied within-session learning of new sound categories in dyslexia, behaviorally and neurally, using fMRI. Human participants (males and females) with and without dyslexia were asked to discriminate which of two serially-presented tones had a higher pitch. The task was administered in two protocols, with and without a repeated reference frequency. The reference condition introduces regularity, and enhances frequency sensitivity in typically developing (TD) individuals. Enhanced sensitivity facilitates the formation of "

Role of harmonicity in counting and hearing out voices in polyphonic music: Effects of hearing loss.

Music plays an important role in many people's lives. While the effects of hearing loss on speech are well studied, its impact on music perception is less understood. To address this gap, the current study utilized polyphonic female vocal passages in an enumeration and a voice-tracking task to investigate how normal-hearing (NH) and hearing-impaired (HI) listeners with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss perceive individual voices in polyphonic music. We hypothesized that hearing loss would hinder listeners' ability to distinguish voices in music due to impaired frequency selectivity,

Evaluation of Differential Sensitivity for Frequency, Intensity, and Duration around the Tinnitus Frequency in Adults with Tonal Tinnitus.

OBJECTIVES: The perceptual characteristics of tinnitus are usually assessed by a matching procedure, where loudness and pitch of an external sound are matched to those of the tinnitus percept. The duration discrimination test (DDT), differential limen for intensity (DLI) and differential limen for frequency (DLF) are relatively simple psychoacoustic methods of measuring differential sensitivity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 15 participants with normal or minimal hearing loss with tinnitus in the age range of 18 to 40 years were enrolled in the present study. Pure tone audiometry (PTA), immittance a

Relationship between tinnitus pitch and edge of hearing loss in individuals with a narrow tinnitus bandwidth.

OBJECTIVE: Psychoacoustic measures of tinnitus, in particular dominant tinnitus pitch and its relationship to the shape of the audiogram, are important in determining and verifying pathophysiological mechanisms of the condition. Our previous study postulated that this relationship might vary between different groups of people with tinnitus. For a small subset of participants with narrow tinnitus bandwidth, pitch was associated with the audiometric edge, consistent with the tonotopic reorganization theory. The current study objective was to establish this relationship in an independent sample.

Quantifying psychoacoustic tuning curves for clinical use.

Psychoacoustic tuning curves (PTCs) were obtained in a number of normal-hearing and hearing-impaired subjects using a simultaneous tone-on-tone masking technique. PTCs at three different centre frequencies (500, 1,000 and 2,000 Hz) were studied. In order to estimate the degree of frequency selectivity of the inner ear, an algorithm for quantification of PTCs was constructed. The method of linear regression was used to calculate the slopes of the linearized curves. Three different parameters of the curve, the low and high frequency slope and the height of the curve, were calculated using comput

Bone-conduction hearing and the occlusion effect in otosclerosis and normal controls.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to better understand bone-conduction hearing in subjects with normal hearing and in those with otosclerosis through the occlusion effect. With this study, the authors hope to lend credence to commonly accepted theories of bone-conduction hearing and the effect of lateralization during the Weber tuning fork test. BACKGROUND: There are three accepted theories defining bone-conduction hearing: compressional bone conduction describes an auditory percept produced by the compression and expansion of the cochlea leading to basilar membrane vibration; inertial bo
