Use of thin-section, multidetector row helical CT images for coronal oblique reformations for optimal visualization of structures in the hepatoduodenal ligament.

Multidetector row computed tomography (CT) can acquire abdominal images of unprecedented thinness in a single breath-hold. This study investigated whether acquiring source axial images at 1.25 mm as opposed to 2.5 mm would result in a perceptible difference in image quality for coronal oblique reformations. Similarly, the hypothesis that a slice pitch of 3:1 would be superior to 6:1 was evaluated. Twenty-nine CT studies were retrospectively evaluated. The images were divided into four groups: 1.25-mm axial images, pitch 3:1; 2.5-mm axial images, pitch 3:1; 1.25-mm axial images, pitch 6:1; and

Pitch Discrimination Testing in Patients with a Voice Disorder.

Auditory perception plays an important role in voice control. Pitch discrimination (PD) is a key index of auditory perception and is influenced by a variety of factors. Little is known about the potential effects of voice disorders on PD and whether PD testing can differentiate people with and without a voice disorder. We thus evaluated PD in a voice-disordered group (n = 71) and a non-voice-disordered control group (n = 80). The voice disorders included muscle tension dysphonia and neurological voice disorders and all participants underwent PD testing as part of a comprehensive voice assessme

Neural entrainment to pitch changes of auditory targets in noise.

Neural entrainment to certain acoustic features can predict speech-in-noise perception, but these features are difficult to separate. We measured neural responses to both natural speech-in-noise and stimuli (auditory figure-ground) that simulate speech-in-noise without any acoustic or linguistic confounds such as stress contour and semantics. The figure-ground stimulus is formed by multiple temporally coherent pure-tone components embedded in a random tone cloud. Previous work has shown that discrimination of dynamic figure-ground based on the fundamental frequency (F0) of natural speech predi

Testing native language neural commitment at the brainstem level: A cross-linguistic investigation of the association between frequency-following response and speech perception.

A current topic in auditory neurophysiology is how brainstem sensory coding contributes to higher-level perceptual, linguistic and cognitive skills. This cross-language study was designed to compare frequency following responses (FFRs) for lexical tones in tonal (Mandarin Chinese) and non-tonal (English) language users and test the correlational strength between FFRs and behavior as a function of language experience. The behavioral measures were obtained in the Garner paradigm to assess how lexical tones might interfere with vowel category and duration judgement. The FFR results replicated pre

[Reduction of stuttering frequency using frequency-shifted and delayed auditory feedback].

In 12 stuttering subjects the fluency enhancing effect of delayed auditory feedback (DAF) and frequency-shifted auditory feedback (FAF) was compared. The subjects had to read three passages consisting of 300 syllables under simultaneous auditory feedback, DAF (delay time: 53 ms) and FAF (frequency shift: -(1/2) octave). Stuttering frequency and percentage of discontinuous speech time were determined. Only under DAF a fluency enhancing effect in the mean values was observed, but not under FAF. However, in 4 subjects a reduction in stuttering frequency of 50% occurred. The conclusion is drawn th

Explicit processing of melodic structure in congenital amusia can be improved by redescription-associate learning.

Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder of musical processing. Previous research demonstrates that although explicit musical processing is impaired in congenital amusia, implicit musical processing can be intact. However, little is known about whether implicit knowledge could improve explicit musical processing in individuals with congenital amusia. To this end, we developed a training method utilizing redescription-associate learning, aiming at transferring implicit representations of perceptual states into explicit forms through verbal description and then establishing the associa

Cochlear Implant Electrode Placement and Music Perception.

IMPORTANCE: Cochlear implants enable improvements in speech perception, but music perception outcomes remain variable. Image-guided cochlear implant programming has emerged as a potential programming strategy for increasing the quality of spectral information delivered through the cochlear implant to improve outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To perform 2 experiments, the first of which modeled the variance in music perception scores as a function of electrode positioning factors, and the second of which evaluated image-guided cochlear implant programming as a strategy to improve music perception with a c

Emotional prosody perception and production in dementia of the Alzheimer's type.

PURPOSE: In this study, the authors investigated emotional prosody in patients with moderate Dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT) With Late Onset. It was expected that both expression and reception of prosody would be impaired relative to age-matched controls. METHOD: Twenty DAT and 20 control participants engaged in 2 expressive and 2 receptive tasks with randomly presented exemplars of sentences targeting the emotions of happiness, anger, sadness, and surprise. RESULTS: In the expressive tasks, objective acoustic measurements revealed significantly less pitch modulation by the patient gr

The effect of MemoVigor 2 on recent-onset idiopathic tinnitus: a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Background: Tinnitus is a common symptom associated with the conscious perception of sound in the absence of a corresponding external or internal sound source, which can severely impact quality of life. Because of the current limited understanding of the precise pathophysiological mechanism of idiopathic tinnitus, no curable treatment has been attained yet. A food supplement trading as MemoVigor 2, which contains a combination of therapeutic ingredients with mainly antioxidant activity, has been used in the treatment of tinnitus. The objective of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of

Estimating Pitch Information From Simulated Cochlear Implant Signals With Deep Neural Networks.

Cochlear implant (CI) users, even with substantial speech comprehension, generally have poor sensitivity to pitch information (or fundamental frequency, F0). This insensitivity is often attributed to limited spectral and temporal resolution in the CI signals. However, the pitch sensitivity markedly varies among individuals, and some users exhibit fairly good sensitivity. This indicates that the CI signal contains sufficient information about F0, and users' sensitivity is predominantly limited by other physiological conditions such as neuroplasticity or neural health. We estimated the upper lim

Acoustics of Emotional Prosody Produced by Prelingually Deaf Children With Cochlear Implants.

Purpose: Cochlear implants (CIs) provide reasonable levels of speech recognition quietly, but voice pitch perception is severely impaired in CI users. The central question addressed here relates to how access to acoustic input pre-implantation influences vocal emotion production by individuals with CIs. The objective of this study was to compare acoustic characteristics of vocal emotions produced by prelingually deaf school-aged children with cochlear implants (CCIs) who were implanted at the age of 2 and had no usable hearing before implantation with those produced by children with normal hea

Pitch matching psychometrics in electric acoustic stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: Combined electric-acoustic stimulation (EAS) is a therapeutic option for patients with severe to profound mid- and high-frequency hearing loss while low-frequency hearing is mostly unaffected. The present study investigates bimodal pitch matching in EAS users as a function of the angular placement of electrodes. Results are compared with data obtained from previous pitch matching studies. Knowledge of electric and acoustic pitch mapping may be important for effective fitting to control the frequency range of acoustic and electric processing. DESIGN: Pitch adjustment experiments wer

Exploring the impact of attention and sensory processing abilities on vocal motor control in childrena).

Auditory feedback plays a critical role in developing and maintaining fluent speech. Although children are theorized to rely heavily on their auditory feedback, previous experimental studies are inconsistent, suggesting that additional factors may be at play. This study examines the role of individual differences in attention and sensory processing abilities on auditory feedback control of speech in children. To this end, 53 children ages 4-11 years completed a frequency altered feedback (FAF) task where the pitch of their auditory feedback was manipulated and responses to the manipulation wer

Effects of identity-related voice cues on speech timing under delayed auditory feedback.

Delayed auditory feedback (DAF) disrupts speech timing, but whether this disruption depends on acoustic cues in the feedback voice remains unclear. Twelve Japanese male speakers read sentences while feedback was presented with actual delays of 30-40, 130-140, and 230-240 ms and with pitch shifting and/or spectral-envelope expansion/compression. Mixed-effects analyses treating pitch and spectral-envelope manipulations separately showed that utterance duration increased with delay and exhibited a significant delay-dependent effect of spectral-envelope manipulation, whereas pitch effects were not

Perceptual anchoring: Children with dyslexia benefit less than controls from contextual repetitions in speech processing.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with dyslexia perceive and utilize statistical features in the auditory input deficiently. The present study investigates whether affected children also benefit less from repeating context tones as perceptual anchors for subsequent speech processing. METHODS: In an event-related potential study, eleven-year-old children with dyslexia (n = 21) and without dyslexia (n = 20) heard syllable pairs, with the first syllable either receiving a constant pitch (anchor) or variable pitch (no-anchor), while second syllables were identical across conditions. RESULTS: Children with

Pitch Variation in Children With Childhood Apraxia of Speech: Preliminary Findings.

Introduction Pitch variation, which refers to one's ability to vary fundamental frequency (F0) within or between syllables when speaking, has not been investigated in children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). However, pitch variation plays an important role in tone languages, as varying F0 patterns communicate different lexical meanings. This study investigated pitch variation abilities in individuals with CAS via the tone-sequencing tasks (TSTs), focusing on task performance and the effects of syllable structure, lexical status, and tones. Method Three Cantonese-speaking children with

The music perception performance of children with and without dyslexia in Taiwan.

Some Western studies have suggested a strong relation between musical discrimination abilities and reading-related skills. Music processing abilities and reading-related skills were evaluated for typically developing children and children with dyslexia. The results showed that pitch discrimination abilities of Chinese dyslexic children are not different from those of typically developing children. However, the former have poorer rhythm imitation abilities. Thus, in Chinese reading there is a strong relation between rhythm and reading acquisition, which is consistent with the research results o

Basilar-membrane responses to multicomponent (Schroeder-phase) signals: understanding intensity effects.

Harmonic complexes comprised of the same spectral components in either positive-Schroeder (+Schr) or negative-Schroeder (-Schr) phase [see Schroeder, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 16, 85-89 (1970)] have identical long-term spectra and similar waveform envelopes. However, localized patterns of basilar-membrane (BM) excitation can be quite different in response to these two stimuli. Measurements in chinchillas showed more modulated (peakier) BM excitation for +Schr than -Schr complexes [Recio and Rhode, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 108, 2281-2298 (2000)]. In the current study, laser velocimetry was used to exa

Temporal dynamics of pitch strength in regular-interval noises: effect of listening region and an auditory model.

Recently, it was demonstrated that the pitch strength of a stimulus denoted "AABB" differed from rippled noise (RN) despite the fact that their long-term spectra and autocorrelation functions are identical (Wiegrebe et al., 1998). Rippled noise is generated by adding a delayed copy of Gaussian noise back to itself; AABB is generated by concatenating equal-duration, Gaussian-noise segments where every segment is repeated once. It was shown that a simple model based on a two-stage integration process separated by a nonlinear transformation explains the pitch-strength differences quantitatively.

[Factors influencing the pitch and loudness of tinnitus].

Pitch match and loudness balance tests were given to 397 cases with tinnitus. The factors which influenced tinnitus pitch and loudness were analyzed statistically from the clinical point of view. The results obtained were as follows: 1) Onomatopoeia of tinnitus, either [Keeeen] or [Jeeeen], were observed in a majority of cases. 2) Significantly sharp sounding onomatopoeia such as [Keeeen] or [Meeeen] had high pitches, over 4kHz, and dull sounds like [Gooooh] or [Buuuun] had low pitches, below 500Hz. 3) Acute stage tinnitus, within one month of onset, had a significantly depressed pitch and wal
