The role of seed appendage in improving the adaptation of a species in definite seasons: a case study of Atriplex centralasiatica.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: As a common accompanying dispersal structure, specialized seed appendages play a critical role in the successful germination and dispersal of many plants, and are regarded as an adaptation character for plants survival in diverse environments. However, little is known about how the appendages modulate the linkage between germination and environmental factors. Here, we tested the responses of germination to seasonal environmental signals (temperature and humidity) via seed appendages using Atriplex centralasiatica, which is widely distributed in salt marshlands with dry-cold winter

Mechanisms underpinning natural variation in non-photochemical quenching kinetics.

Plants use light as an energy source to reduce carbon dioxide into carbohydrates during photosynthesis. However, when the incident light exceeds the photosynthesis rate, the excess energy must be dispersed, or it can result in the unregulated formation of harmful reactive oxygen species, especially in plants exposed to very high light or abiotic stress conditions that compromise photosynthetic efficiency. The excess energy is typically dispersed harmlessly as heat, which can be measured as non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) of chlorophyll fluorescence. NPQ kinetics vary within plant populations

Spatio-temporal ecology and management of cabbage maggot.

This study analyzes the spatio-temporal dispersion patterns of the cabbage maggot (Delia radicum L.) (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) infestation in rutabagas and turnips in Oregon and suggests ways to exploit the spatial and temporal ecology of the cabbage maggot to improve management of the pest. The patchy distribution of cabbage maggots arises from a combination of first-order effects driven by spatial heterogeneity and second-order effects driven by spatial autocorrelation. The intensity of cabbage maggot infestations varied from year to year. Within a given year, damage rates tended to be higher

Niche evolution and asymmetric diversification in elm species (Ulmaceae).

Global patterns of species diversity are highly heterogeneous, and even within the same evolutionary lineage, species richness can differ markedly. Understanding the mechanisms underlying such disparities remains a central question in evolutionary biology and biogeography. Here, we investigate the evolutionary drivers of asymmetric diversity and distribution patterns in Ulmaceae by integrating molecular phylogenetics, fossil evidence, climatic niche analyses, and biogeographic reconstructions. We reconstructed a time-calibrated, species-level phylogeny encompassing 86.21% of extant Ulmaceae sp

Modeling of air pollutant concentrations in an industrial region of Turkey.

The hourly SO2 and PM10 concentrations in ambient air of the Kutahya city located at the western part of Turkey have exceeded the air quality limits in winter months since several years. The region has major industrial plants including lignite-fired power plants and open-cast mining activities, residential areas, and traffic sources. To obtain and quantify the sector-wise anthropogenic emissions and spatial distribution of the major pollutants including SO2, NO x , PM10, and CO, a comprehensive emission inventory with 1-km spatial resolution was prepared for the year of 2014, and the AERMOD di

Genetic variation in foraging traits among inbred lines of a predatory mite.

Response of predators to herbivore-induced plant volatiles can affect the length of time a predator spends in a prey patch and the probability of a predator finding a new prey patch. Variation in response to herbivore-induced plant volatiles may lead to different foraging decisions among individuals, thereby affecting both within-patch dynamics and between-patch dispersal. We found significant phenotypic and additive genetic variation in two behavioral assays of response to herbivore-induced plant volatiles among inbred isofemale lines of the predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis. In wind-tu

Investigating processes influencing simulation of local Arctic wintertime anthropogenic pollution in Fairbanks, Alaska, during ALPACA-2022.

Lagrangian tracer simulations are deployed to investigate processes influencing vertical and horizontal dispersion of anthropogenic pollution in Fairbanks, Alaska, during the Alaskan Layered Pollution and Chemical Analysis (ALPACA) 2022 field campaign. Simulated concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide ( S O 2 ), and nitrogen oxides ( N O x ), including surface and elevated sources, are the highest at the surface under very cold stable conditions. Pollution enhancements above the surface (50-300 m) are mainly attributed to elevated power plant emissions. Both surface and elev

Using the Salmonella assay to delineate the dispersion routes of mutagenic compounds from coal wastes in contaminated soil.

The mutagenicity of acidic and organic extracts of surface soil under the influence of a coal-fired power plant was evaluated by Salmonella/microsome assay using strains TA97a, TA98 and TA100 in the absence and presence of exogenous metabolic systems (S9 mix). Additionally, strains YG1041 and YG1042 (sensitive to nitroderivatives) were used for the organic extracts. In general, the responses were higher in the organic extracts in the presence of S9 mix. The comparison between strains TA98 and TA100 and their derived strains YG1041 and YG1042, respectively, allowed the detection of the presence

Night and day: Contributions of diurnal and nocturnal visitors to pollen dispersal, paternity diversity, and fruit set in an early-blooming shrub, Daphne jezoensis.

PREMISE: Under uncertain pollinator visit conditions, plants often exhibit long flowering periods and generalized pollination systems. Flowering of the gynodioecious shrub Daphne jezoensis occurs in early spring in cool temperate forests. Pollination by nocturnal moths is expected, given the species' tubular-shaped flowers with sweet fragrance and nectar. However, the effectiveness of nocturnal moths under cool conditions is unknown. We evaluated the relative importance of diurnal and nocturnal visitors as pollinators in early spring. METHODS: We investigated flowering duration, flower visito

Interference of three herbicides on iron acquisition in maize plants.

The use of herbicides to control weed species could lead to environmental threats due to their persistence and accumulation in the ecosystems and cultivated fields. Nonetheless, the effect of these compounds on plant mineral nutrition in crops has been barely investigated. This study aimed at ascertaining the effect of three herbicides (S-metolachlor, metribuzin and terbuthylazine) on the capacity of maize to acquire iron (Fe). Interferences on plant growth and reductions on the Fe contents were found in the plants treated. Furthermore, root cell viability and functionality losses were ascerta

Phenotypic and metabolic plasticity shapes life-history strategies under combinations of abiotic stresses.

Plants developed various reversible and non-reversible acclimation mechanisms to cope with the multifaceted nature of abiotic-stress combinations. We hypothesized that in order to endure these stress combinations, plants elicit distinctive acclimation strategies through specific trade-offs between reproduction and defense. To investigate Brachypodium distachyon acclimation strategies to combinations of salinity, drought and heat, we applied a system biology approach, integrating physiological, metabolic, and transcriptional analyses. We analyzed the trade-offs among functional and performance

Experimental manipulation of floral display size does not affect the distribution of paternal diversity in Silene dioica.

PREMISE: Various factors, including pollinator visitation patterns and pollen carryover, govern paternal diversity and its distribution within maternal plants. Floral display size may have opposite effects on fruit- and plant-level paternal diversity, because plants with large displays may receive more pollinator visits but also more sequential probes per visit. METHODS: To investigate the effect of floral display size on the distribution of paternal diversity in Silene dioica, we genotyped and assigned paternity for 1320 seeds sampled in several fruits per plant in control and manipulated fe

Plant pathogenic nematode exosomes remodel vector tracheae to enhance pathogen transmission.

Pathogens frequently employ vector-manipulation strategies to enhance their transmission efficiency. Exosomes are increasingly recognized as mediators of interspecific communication between pathogens and their vectors. However, the mechanisms by which plant pathogenic nematode exosomes mediate cross-kingdom manipulation of vector development remain largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that the plant pathogenic nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus), transmitted by the vector beetle (Monochamus alternatus), secretes exosomes containing microRNAs (miRNAs) that remodel the tracheal development

Hot water treatment: an effective method for disinfecting Castanea sativa mill. dormant scions against Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu.

BACKGROUND: The Asian chestnut gall wasp (ACGW) Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu is the most severe pest of the genus Castanea worldwide. After its arrival in Europe, the insect dispersed rapidly from Italy to other European countries, as well as spreading over long distances within each country because of the unintentional transport of infested chestnut material owing to the fact that infestation inside the dormant buds is visually undetectable. Hot water treatment (HWT) has been tested in terms of pest and diseases control in propagation processes with a wide range of plant material and speci

Blade-running: an efficient yet simple behaviour to potentially combat summit disease in ants.

BACKGROUND: Social systems are attractive targets for parasites. Once infiltrated they are able to manipulate the host to contribute to their further dispersal. A wide array of parasites causes summit disease: driving their host up on elevated points on plants from where propagules are then dispersed. In ants, previous observations suggested the existence of a simple social prophylactic strategy that could help reduce the pathogen's dispersal success through early corpse disposal e.g., in the case of summit-causing pathogenic Pandora fungus. RESULTS: We experimentally tested the efficiency of

Metabolites produced by inoculated Vigna radiata during bacterial assisted phytoremediation of Pb, Ni and Cr polluted soil.

Phytoremediation assisted with plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) is a green technology to remediate metal contaminated soils. Plants usually produce secondary metabolites to tolerate metal toxicity. Present study was designed to explore the phytoremediation potential of Vigna radiata var. NM-II in the presence of metal resistant PGPB and comparison of metabolites produced under heavy metal stresses (Pb, Ni, Cr). Three PGPB selected for present study include Bacillus pumilus MB246, Serratia nematodiphila MB307 and Delftia Lacustris MB322. Pot experiments were conducted with inoculated V. r

Regulatory Overview and Considerations for Medical Countermeasures Developed for Radiological/Nuclear Incident Responses.

After the terrorist attacks on September 11 and the anthrax attacks in 2001, the United States Government (USG) implemented several pieces of legislation to enable the federal government to prepare for future threats, including managing and funding product development of medical countermeasures (MCMs). The Project BioShield Act of 20041 and the Pandemic and All Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA) of 20062 (with reauthorizations in 20133 and 20194) described and fine-tuned the scope and mission of different agencies in this effort. The Department of Homeland Security is charged with issuing materi

Anatomical and Histological Characterization of the Intestine of Artibeus lituratus.

The order Chiroptera is highly diverse and is the second richest among mammals. Approximately 181 species are known in Brazil, with varied feeding habits that make them essential for ecological functions such as seed dispersal and plant regeneration. Despite the importance of their ecosystem services, the anatomical and histological aspects of the digestive system of these animals are still little explored. The aim of this study was to describe the anatomical and histomorphological aspects of the intestines of A. lituratus. Six individuals were captured in peri-urban areas of Rio Branco, Acre.

Tellurium behaviour in the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident.

The behaviour of tellurium radionuclides in the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident was examined to determine if it is consistent with the current understanding of tellurium chemistry, and whether there is any evidence of tellurium dispersal by species other than aerosols (e.g., vapours). Previous speciation studies, hot-cell experiments, in-reactor experiments and the transport from the Chernobyl reactor accident indicated that tellurium would behave primarily as a particulate species that condensed at high temperature, although the initial chemical species may have transformed to

Coating effect of renatured triple-helix lentinan on the morphology and antimicrobial activity of ZnO synthesized by hydrothermal method.

Polysaccharides are considered to be ideal green raw materials for enhancing biocompatibility and dispersion effects of nanoparticles. In this study, we coated and dispersed ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) using the denaturation-renaturation process of a triple helix glucan lentinan (LNT), induced by changes in pH value within the reaction system. Various ZnO/LNT composites with different particle sizes and crystal morphologies were prepared and characterized. The results demonstrated that renatured LNT (r-LNT) effectively encapsulated the {101̄0} crystal planes of ZnO, preventing crystal growth durin
