Cannabis sativa L. exhibits pronounced sexual plasticity in which both XX and XY plants can undergo floral phenotypic sex reversal in response to ethylene modulation, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly defined. Here, we present the most extensive multi-omic analysis of ethylene-induced sex change in C. sativa to date, integrating over 130 RNA-seq libraries, ethylene pathway metabolite quantification, and whole-genome sequencing across three XX and XY genotypes. Treatments with silver thiosulfate and ethephon induced more than 80% phenotypic conversion, but transcriptomic res

Robust plant immunity negatively affects other fitness traits, including growth and seed production. Jasmonate (JA) confers broad-spectrum protection against plant consumers by stimulating the degradation of JASMONATE ZIM-DOMAIN (JAZ) proteins, which in turn relieves repression on transcription factors (TFs) coincident with reduced growth and fecundity. The molecular mechanisms underlying JA-mediated decreases in fitness remain largely unknown. To assess the contribution of MYC TFs to growth and reproductive fitness at high levels of defence, we mutated three MYC genes in a JAZ-deficient mutan

Plants continuously face fluctuating environmental conditions, requiring tightly coordinated regulatory systems to balance growth and stress responses. This review synthesizes current knowledge on phytohormones as central integrators of plant-microbiome interactions, highlighting their dual role as internal regulators and ecological gatekeepers that shape microbiome assembly and function. Phytohormones, such as auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins, abscisic acid, ethylene, salicylic acid, and jasmonates, dynamically regulate plant development, immunity, and rhizosphere chemistry, thereby influenci

Plant peptide hormones have reshaped our understanding of intercellular signaling in plants. Once considered absent in plants, peptide-based signaling pathways emerged as key regulators of plant growth, development, environmental responses and immunity. A paradigm shift occurred with the discoveries of Systemin and Phytosulfokine (PSK) in the 1990s as well as the identifications of receptor-like kinases (RLKs) regulating important biological processes. Over the past three decades, a repertoire of peptide hormone families has been expanded enormously, with deeper understandings of peptide modif

Originally identified as root-derived exudates that trigger the germination of parasitic weed seeds, strigolactones (SLs) were later discovered to be crucial facilitators of plant symbiotic associations with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and then found to be a bona fide plant hormone class in 2008. Thereafter, SLs have been revealed as versatile regulators of plant development, regulating processes as diverse as shoot branching, root architecture, leaf senescence, vasculature formation, and stem secondary growth. Beyond these developmental roles, they function as signaling molecules, enabling p

Plant growth regulators (PGRs) significantly contribute to enhancing crop quality and yield. There is an urgent market demand for innovative natural PGRs. Marine natural products have the potential to serve as valuable sources of PGRs. To discover natural siderophore-type PGRs from marine natural products, according to a systematic pipeline for efficient lead-structure discovery from microbial natural products (SPLSD), a unique desferrioxamine-like siderophore biosynthetic gene cluster was discovered and activated by genome mining and culture regulation from a novel species, Streptomonospora n

Filamentous fungi can sense useful resources and hazards in their environment and direct growth of their hyphae accordingly. Chemotropism ensures access to nutrients, contact with other individuals (e.g., for mating), and interaction with hosts in the case of pathogens. Previous studies have revealed a complex chemotropic sensing landscape during host-pathogen interactions, but the underlying molecular machinery remains poorly characterized. Here we studied mechanisms controlling directed hyphal growth of the important plant-pathogenic fungus Verticillium dahliae towards different chemoattract

Root microbiota is important for plant growth and fitness. Little is known about whether and how the assembly of root microbiota may be controlled by epigenetic regulation, which is crucial for gene transcription and genome stability. Here we show that dysfunction of the histone demethylase IBM1 (INCREASE IN BONSAI METHYLATION 1) in Arabidopsis thaliana substantially reshaped the root microbiota, with the majority of the significant amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) being decreased. Transcriptome analyses of plants grown in soil and in sterile growth medium jointly disclosed salicylic acid (SA

Cytokinins are essential regulators of plant growth and development and are actively involved in plant responses to both biotic and abiotic stresses. In the present study, the role of 6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP) in modulating growth performance and copper (Cu) tolerance in Carthamus tinctorius L. was examined. Treatments consisted of four CuSO4 levels and three BAP levels in a factorial design. High Cu levels significantly reduced seed germination parameters, growth characteristics, photosynthetic pigments, root and shoot protein content, and peroxidase (POX) activity, while increasing soluble c

Iron (Fe) is one of the essential micronutrients required by both plants and animals. In humans, Fe deficiency causes anemia, the most prevalent nutritional disorder. Most people rely on plant-based foods as their major Fe source, but plants are a poor source of dietary Fe. Therefore, there is a critical need to better understand the mechanisms involved in the uptake and trafficking of Fe and how plants adapt to Fe deficiency. Fe participates in key cellular functions such as photosynthesis and respiration. Perturbations of Fe uptake, transport, or storage affect plant growth as well as crop y

In seed plants, formation of the adaxial-abaxial polarity is of primary importance in leaf patterning. Since Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. genes ASYMMETRIC LEAVES1 ( AS1) and ASYMMETRIC LEAVES2 ( AS2) are key regulators in specifying adaxial leaf identity, and ERECTA is involved in the AS1/ AS2 pathway for regulating adaxial-abaxial polarity [L. Xu et al. (2003) Development 130:4097-4107], we studied the physiological functions of the ERECTA protein in plant development. We analyzed the effects of different environmental conditions on a special leaf structure in the as1 and as2 mutants. Thi

Soil salinization has become a major global abiotic threat restricting sustainable viticulture, especially in coastal and inland saline-alkali zones. Unlike cereal crops mainly suffering from sodium toxicity, grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is a typical chloride-sensitive woody perennial, subjected to superimposed damages of osmotic stress, ionic imbalance and secondary oxidative injury under saline conditions which severely suppress vegetative growth and degrade berry quality. This review systematically summarizes the multi-layered physiological adaptive mechanisms of grapevine against salt str

Gibberellins (GAs) are plant hormones that regulate growth and development. We investigated how a transcription factor, SlBBX20, modulates plant height by affecting GA metabolism and response in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). We found that overexpression of SlBBX20 caused dwarfism, which was rescued by GA treatment, while knockout of SlBBX20 increased plant height. SlBBX20 directly activated the expression of GA metabolic oxidase genes (SlGA2ox1, SlGA2ox4, and SlGA2ox5) and repressed the expression of a GA-responsive gene, SlMYB9. Plants overexpressing SlMYB9 grew taller than wild type and

Avocado (Persea americana) is an economically important tree crop that exhibits a high rate of immature fruit abscission (IFA), reducing yield. As the seed coat derived from recently abscised fruitlets displays a senescence phenotype, we hypothesized that this maternal organ plays a critical role in initiating IFA. Here, we show that fruitlets fated to abscise undergo growth arrest before shrinking and detaching from the tree. Comparative RNA-seq analysis indicated that growth arrest is associated with a transcriptome reprogramming that is first initiated in the seed coat and then transmitted

Atractylodes lancea (Thunb.) DC. (A. lancea) is a crop with medicinal and food properties. Currently, the majority of A. lancea available on the market is cultivated in extensive agricultural fields. This led to phenotypic variation in the plant and a reduction in the content of active ingredients. However, the cultivation of the understory can facilitate the phenotype of A. lancea. This, in turn, aligns with the characteristics of "excellent shape" and "high quality." Nonetheless, there is a paucity of research focusing on the phenotypic changes and molecular mechanisms underlying quality for

Shoot branching substantially impacts vegetative and reproductive growth as well as wood characteristics in perennial woody species by shaping the shoot system architecture. Although plant hormones have been shown to play a fundamental role in shoot branching in annual species, their corresponding actions in perennial woody plants are largely unknown, in part due to the lack of branching mutants. Here, we demonstrated the role of plant hormones in bud dormancy transition toward activation and outgrowth in woody plants by comparing the physiological and molecular changes in the apical shoot ste

PREMISE: Root-sprouting (RS) is an evolutionarily independent alternative to axillary stem branching for a plant to attain its architecture. Root-sprouting plants are better adapted to disturbance than non-RS plants, and their vigor is frequently boosted by biomass removal. Nevertheless, RS plants are rarer than plants that are not root-sprouters, possibly because they must overcome developmental barriers such as intrinsic phytohormonal balance or because RS ability is conditioned by injury to the plant body. The objective of this study was to identify whether phytohormones or injury enable RS

Due to their immobility, plants have developed sophisticated mechanisms to robustly monitor and appropriately respond to dynamic changes in nutrient availability. Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) are especially important in regulating plant metabolism and development, thereby affecting crop productivity. In addition to their independent utilization, the ratio of C to N metabolites in the cell, referred to as the "C/N balance", is important for the regulation of plant growth, although molecular mechanisms mediating C/N signaling remain unclear. Recently ABI1, a protein phosphatase type 2C (PP2C), wa

Inositol phosphates and pyrophosphates are small, water-soluble molecules involved in a range of physiological processes across eukaryotic organisms, including plants. Over the past two decades, significant advancements in inositol (pyro)phosphate detection and chemical synthesis, coupled with the characterization of plant mutants and the structural analysis of receptors and associated proteins, have greatly enhanced our understanding of their production, degradation, and perception in plants. This growing knowledge base demonstrates that inositol (pyro)phosphates are crucial for regulating ke
