Mineral nutrition of plants: a short history of plant physiology.

The development of the knowledge on the mineral nutrition of plants begins between the 17th and 18th centuries when some European naturalists gave the first experimental evidences of what had been empirically known for about two millennia. The works of Hales and Ingenhousz were of absolute importance in relation to the transport of water and solutes, and assimilation of "fixed air" (carbon dioxide), respectively. The early chemistry introduced by Lavoisier benefited the first physiologists Senebier and De Saussure to reject the "theory of humus", which imposed the soil as the unique source of

Phosphate solubilization and multiple plant growth promoting properties of Mesorhizobium species nodulating chickpea from acidic soils of Ethiopia.

The main purpose of this study was to screen and select strains from seven Mesorhizobium spp. for efficient phosphate solubilizing and other plant growth-promoting traits. Mesorhizobium species were tested for their ability to dissolve inorganic phosphate sources and multiple plant growth-promoting attributes. From a total of 62 Mesorhizobium strains, 47(76%) strains formed clear zones with an average PSI of 1.9-2.7 on Pikovskaya's agar plate. The selected strains also released soluble phosphorus [125-150 P (µgml-1)] from tri-calcium phosphate and low level of phosphorous i.e., 15.4 µg/ml and

Rhizobia cystathionine γ-lyase-derived H2S delays nodule senescence in soybean.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is required for optimal establishment of soybean (Glycine max)-Sinorhizobium fredii symbiotic interaction, yet its role in regulating the nitrogen fixation-senescence transition remains poorly understood. A S. fredii cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE) mutant deficient in H2S synthesis showed early nodule senescence characterized by reduced nitrogenase activity, structural changes in nodule cells, and accelerated bacteroid death. In parallel, the CSE mutant facilitated the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and elicited antioxidant responses. We observed that H2S-mediat

Adaptive resistance to and intracellular bioaccumulation of potentially toxic metals in a plant growth-promoting Rhizobium tropici-like isolate: implications for phytoremediation.

The accumulation of potentially toxic metals (PTMs) poses a threat to the cellular integrity of soil microorganisms as well as ecological stability, driving the selection of resistant microorganisms with biotechnological potential. This study aimed to evaluate the behavior of the Rhizobium sp. LBMP-C04 isolate under PTM stress, focusing on adaptive resistance mechanisms and intracellular bioaccumulation. The bacterium, which was isolated from Arachis pintoi root nodules and had previously undergone genomic characterization, was subjected to antibiotic-resistance assays, growth-curve analysis i

Physiological disruption, structural deformation and low grain yield induced by neonicotinoid insecticides in chickpea: A long term phytotoxicity investigation.

Arbitrary use of insecticides in agricultural practices cause severe environmental hazard that adversely affects the growth and productivity of edible crops. Considering theses, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the toxicological potential of two neonicotinoid insecticides, imidacloprid (IMID) and thiamethoxam (THIA) using chickpea as a test crop. Application of insecticides at three varying doses revealed a gradual decrease in biological performance of chickpea plants which however, varied noticeably among insecticides and their doses. Significant (P ≤ 0.05) decline in germination

Acetylenotrophic and Diazotrophic Bradyrhizobium sp. Strain I71 from TCE-Contaminated Soils.

Acetylene (C2H2) is a molecule rarely found in nature, with very few known natural sources, but acetylenotrophic microorganisms can use acetylene as their primary carbon and energy source. As of 2018 there were 15 known strains of aerobic and anaerobic acetylenotrophs; however, we hypothesize there may yet be unrecognized diversity of acetylenotrophs in nature. This study expands the known diversity of acetylenotrophs by isolating the aerobic acetylenotroph, Bradyrhizobium sp. strain I71, from trichloroethylene (TCE)-contaminated soils. Strain I71 is a member of the class Alphaproteobacteria a

Endophytic Bradyrhizobium spp. isolates from sugarcane obtained through different culture strategies.

Brazilian sugarcane has been shown to obtain part of its nitrogen via biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). Recent reports, based on the culture independent sequencing of bacterial nifH complementary DNA (cDNA) from sugarcane tissues, have suggested that members of the Bradyrhizobium genus could play a role in sugarcane-associated BNF. Here we report on the isolation of Bradyrhizobium spp. isolates and a few other species from roots of sugarcane cultivar RB867515 by two cultivation strategies: direct isolation on culture media and capture of Bradyrhizobium spp. using the promiscuous legume Vigna

[Effects of Ferrous Sulfate and Ferric Nitrate on Cadmium Transportation in the Rhizosphere Soil-Rice System].

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in the agricultural soils of China is a serious and growing environmental problem that urgently needs to be controlled and completely remediated. The biogeochemical cycles of nitrogen (N), sulfur (S), and iron (Fe), and the coupled cycles of Fe-N and Fe-S have been reported to control Cd transportation in the soil-rice system. Exploring practical remediation strategies for Cd from the perspective of the application of nutrients such as N, S, and Fe for rice growth is expected to obtain farm-specific and state-of-the-art technologies and products to reduce the accumul

Synergy of FeNPs and PGPR Strain Enhances Nitrogen Fixation by Linking Root Metabolites and Rhizosphere Microbiome Assembly in Alfalfa.

Increasing evidences show plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) benefit legume-rhizobium symbiosis, and iron-based nanoparticles (FeNPs) act as rhizobia microenvironment stabilizers. However, few studies explored if their combination exerts synergistic effects on the symbiosis in legume. Here, we compared the effects of FeNPs, Pseudomonas rhizovicinus M30-35, and their co-application (Fe + M) on alfalfa growth, nitrogen fixation, root metabolites, and rhizosphere microbiome. Compared with FeNPs and M30-35, Fe + M increased shoot height, root length, root activity, chlorophyll content, an

Isolation and assessment of the beneficial effect of exopolysaccharide-producing PGPR in Triticum aestivum (L.) plants grown under NaCl and Cd -stressed conditions.

Exopolysaccharide (EPS)-producing beneficial bacteria play a multifaceted role in improving plant growth and adaptive responses against different stressors. In this study, we isolated 25 bacterial strains from pea nodules and were further studied for their sodium chloride (NaCl) and cadmium (Cd) stress tolerance. Based on our results, Rhizobium fabae SR-22 (NCBI Accession number: MG063739.1) showed better tolerance toward salinity and Cd stress and produced a wide range of plant growth-promoting compounds. However, the amount of EPS varies during NaCl and Cd stress. It was important to note th

Responsivity of Two Pea Genotypes to the Symbiosis with Rhizobia and Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Fungi-A Proteomics Aspect of the "Efficiency of Interactions with Beneficial Soil Microorganisms" Trait.

It is well known that individual pea (Pisum sativum L.) cultivars differ in their symbiotic responsivity. This trait is typically manifested with an increase in seed weights, due to inoculation with rhizobial bacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The aim of this study was to characterize alterations in the root proteome of highly responsive pea genotype k-8274 plants and low responsive genotype k-3358 ones grown in non-sterile soil, which were associated with root colonization with rhizobial bacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (in comparison to proteome shifts caused by soil supplem

Mesorhizobium bavaricum sp. nov. and Mesorhizobium monacense sp. nov., two novel Lotus-associated species harbouring symbiotic plasmids.

Legumes establish a mutualistic interaction with nitrogen-fixing rhizobia. Lotus japonicus is a model for studying this symbiosis; however, only a limited number of rhizobial species nodulating this host have been taxonomically described. Here, we characterise four Mesorhizobium strains (DC-1.1T, Qj1B1, DC-1.5T, and Qj2B2) isolated from root nodules of Lotus japonicus and Lotus burttii. Multi-locus phylogeny and phylogenomic analyses resolved these isolates into two well-supported monophyletic clades. Genome-based comparisons supported their classification as distinct taxa, with strains DC-1.1

Endophytic Lelliottia nimipressuralis G24: A Potential Biocontrol Agent for Managing Phelipanche aegyptiaca.

The root parasitic weed Phelipanche aegyptiaca poses a serious threat to tomato production in arid regions of Northwest China, yet effective and environmentally friendly control measures remain limited. In this study, an endophytic bacterial strain G24 with strong inhibitory activity against P. aegyptiaca seed germination was isolated from healthy tomato tissues. In vitro germination assays showed that both the fermentation broth and cell-free supernatant of G24 completely inhibited seed germination even at 1000-fold dilution, indicating that the active metabolites are extracellularly produced
