Recently, thiamine (VitaminB1) has been shown to induce resistance against Pseudomonas syringae in Arabidopsis plants through priming of defense responses. In this paper, we have demonstrated the efficiency of thiamine to induce resistance against downy mildew caused by the oomycete Plasmopara viticola in a susceptible Vitis vinifera cultivar "Chardonnay" under glasshouse controlled conditions by providing a dual mode of action involving direct antifungal activity and elicitation of host-defense responses. Thiamine-induced defense responses included the generation of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2

Myrosinase, referred to as thioglucoside glucohydrolase (TGG), plays a crucial role in plant physiology through catalyzing the hydrolysis of glucosinolates into bioactive isothiocyanates. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the myrosinases TGG1 and TGG2 are essential for abscisic acid- and methyl jasmonate-induced stomata closure. Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), one of myrosinase products, triggers stomatal closure in A. thaliana. We investigated stomatal responses to AITC to clarify the role of TGG1 and TGG2 in Arabidopsis guard-cell signaling. Allyl isothiocyanate at 50 μM and 100 μM induced stomatal clos

In plants, pathogen attack can induce an immune response known as systemic acquired resistance that protects against a broad spectrum of pathogens. In the search for safer agrochemicals, silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs; food additive E551) have recently been proposed as a new tool. However, initial results are controversial, and the molecular mechanisms of SiO2 NP-induced disease resistance are unknown. Here we show that SiO2 NPs, as well as soluble Si(OH)4, can induce systemic acquired resistance in a dose-dependent manner, which involves the defence hormone salicylic acid. Nanoparticle uptake

Turnera aphrodisiaca Ward (Turneraceae) has been used traditionally as an aphrodisiac, stimulant, nerve tonic, and laxative and in kidney, menstrual, and pregnancy disorders. Despite a long tradition of use in the treatment of various ailments, no systematic phytochemical and pharmacological work has ever been carried out on T. aphrodisiaca. The authors suggest that the major stumbling block in systematic exploration of the plant is non-availability of authentic plant material. In the present investigation, various pharmacognostic standards for the plant have been generated so that authentic T

Genetic engineering of Arabidopsis thaliana reveals that mitochondrial serine hydroxymethyltransferase 1 (SHMT1) protein abundance does not limit the capacity of photorespiration, photosynthesis, or stomatal conductance. Photorespiration safeguards photosynthesis from negative metabolic feedback inhibition caused by Rubisco's major oxygenation byproduct, 2-phosphoglycolate, and its downstream metabolites. Previous studies have shown that photosynthetic limitations can be alleviated by enhancing endogenous photorespiratory flux through position-specific enzyme overexpression. Here, we investiga

Salt stress severely constrains growth and wood quality in woody plants. Although non-specific lipid transfer proteins (nsLTPs) are known to participate in stress responses, their function in the valuable timber species Catalpa bungei remains largely unexplored. Here, we characterized CbLTP67, a guard cell-enriched gene whose expression is downregulated by both salt stress and salicylic acid (SA). Overexpression of CbLTP67 resulted in excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), weakened antioxidant capacity, and reduced survival under salt stress. Specifically, CbLTP67 overexpress

Magnesium plays a vital role in enhancing plant resilience under salt stress. However, its specific function in maintaining ion homeostasis, particularly in regulating sodium uptake, remains unclear. Recognizing that magnesium deficiency leads to increased potassium uptake and accumulation, and given that sodium and potassium possess the same charge, we hypothesize that salt stress disrupts ion homeostasis to a greater extent in magnesium-deficient plants compared to those deficient in potassium. To test this hypothesis, Vicia faba plants were cultivated hydroponically and subjected to moderat

Wheat yield is increasingly constrained by drought stress. Post-translational modifications, particularly ubiquitination, are essential for plant adaptation to abiotic stresses. This study demonstrates that TaPUB1 overexpression substantially enhances drought tolerance, whereas RNAi lines display markedly higher sensitivity. TaPUB1-overexpressing lines showed higher photosynthetic efficiency and increased redox enzyme activities, leading to reduced ROS accumulation. TaPUB1 specifically interacts with TabZIP9L, a negative regulator of drought responses, and mediates its ubiquitination to modula

Efforts to maximize yields of food crops can be undermined by abiotic stress factors, particularly those related to climate change. Here, we use a range of physiological methods to detect the individual and combined effects of heat and drought stress on three contrasting varieties of tomato: Hybrid 61, Moskvich, and Nagcarlang. Seedlings were acclimated under the following treatment regimes: CONTROL (25-36°C; well-watered), DRY (25-36°C; 20% field capacity), HOT (25-42°C; well-watered) and HOT+DRY (25-42°C; 20% field capacity). In each treatment, stomatal conductance, leaf temperature, chlorop

Heatwaves are intensifying worldwide, often coinciding with high vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and soil drought. Yet, how temperate tree species tolerate these combined stresses remains elusive. Using single-tree gas-exchange chambers, we examined the response of leaf gas exchange and thermoregulation of three broadleaved tree species to a stepwise increase in air temperature (25°C-45°C) along with VPD (2.5-7.9 kPa) under well-watered and moderate drought conditions, followed by a 2-day recovery at 25°C. Across species, heat stress increased transpiration but reduced net assimilation, leading

BACKGROUND: Under elevated (relative to ambient) light intensity and CO₂ levels combined with drought affect photosynthesis, with responses may be varying between genotypes depending on their drought resistance. Thus, this study aimed to determine the difference of light intensity and CO2 concentration on the photosynthetic traits of Jerusalem artichoke genotypes differing in drought resistance under drought conditions. RESULTS: The rising CO₂ concentrations enhanced photosynthetic rate (Pn) and transpiration efficiency (TE), but decreased stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rate (E) i

Wheat responses to F. graminearum result in a deep and sharp reprogramming of a wide range of biological processes, including energy-associated functions and related metabolisms. Although these impacts have been thoroughly described at the molecular scale through proteomics and transcriptomics studies, phenotypic studies are still needed to fill the gap between the observed molecular events and the actual impacts of the disease on the ecophysiological processes. Taking advantage of the gas exchange method, the effects of two F. graminearum strains of contrasting aggressiveness on spike's photo

BACKGROUND: Maize-soybean intercropping, a sustainable intensification practice, has been extensively studied. However, systematic research on how maize planting density and crop allocation patterns influence yield-related photosynthetic mechanisms in intercropping systems is scarce. This study conducted a two-year field trial during the 2022 and 2023 planting seasons to evaluate the effects of intercropping ratios (M4S4: four rows maize to four rows soybean; M2S2: two rows maize to two rows soybean) and maize planting densities (D1: 45 000 plants ha-1, D2: 52 500 plants ha-1, D3: 60 000 plant

The net photosynthetic rate (A) decreases with leaf aging and senescence, primarily due to reductions in stomatal conductance (gs), mesophyll conductance (gm), and the maximum carboxylation rate (Vcmax). However, the relative contributions of these factors to age-related declines in photosynthesis remain insufficiently understood. In this study, we investigated gas exchange parameters, chlorophyll fluorescence, and biochemical traits in mature and senescing rice leaves. The net photosynthetic rate (A) decreased with leaf age, from 22.2 µmol m⁻² s⁻¹ in mature leaves to 15.9 µmol m⁻² s⁻¹ in olde

Enhancing rice photosynthesis is essential for increasing yield, yet the specific leaf morphological characteristics associated with high photosynthetic efficiency remain unclear. This study aims to investigate how reducing leaf width (LW) influences photosynthetic rate (A) and water-use efficiency (iWUE) in rice. Pot experiments were performed using 14 cultivated rice genotypes exhibiting considerable LW variations and genetically modified rice lines carrying the NARROW LEAF 1 (NAL1) gene. We observed a significant negative correlation between LW and A among the 14 cultivated rice varieties.

Triploid plants are usually sterile or produce non-viable seeds, but may produce fruits. This study examined the morphological and reproductive characteristics of triploid Passiflora cincinnata Masters, with a focus on fruit and seed production. Triploid plants were obtained through in vitro cultivation of the endosperm via somatic embryogenesis, whereas diploid plants were raised through seed germination. Diploid and triploid plants were confirmed by flow cytometry and cytogenetic analyses. Cross-pollination and self-pollination yielded, on average, 18 fruits per plant in the cytotype diploid

Festuca rubra subsp. pruinosa is a maritime grass native to sea cliffs, a habitat characterized by high salinity and low nutrient availability. This species forms symbiotic associations with Epichloë festucae, a vertically transmitted endophytic fungus that colonizes aerial tissues. Two experiments evaluated whether E. festucae influences the salinity tolerance of its host. In Experiment 1, symbiotic and non-symbiotic plants were irrigated with saline solution or tap water, whereas Experiment 2 additionally included fertilization. In both experiments, unfertilized symbiotic plants exhibited th

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays a significant role in various processes related to plant growth, development, and responses to environmental stress, particularly affecting stomatal behavior. While numerous studies have documented the impact of H2S on stomatal movement, the effects of H2S on stomatal development remain relatively unexplored, and the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Epidermal pattern factors (EPFs) are crucial initiators of the genetic regulatory network governing stomatal development. This study aims to elucidate the regulatory mechanisms of H2S in leaf stomatal dev

INTRODUCTION: Chronic liver disease leads to neurocognitive impairment (NCI) and more advanced liver fibrosis is associated with greater deficits. Further, cognitive performances do not differ significantly among patients affected by diverse types of chronic liver diseases. Thus, it would be useful to have a clinical tool associated with early cognitive change applicable to the HIV-infected population with high HCV prevalence. Aim of the analysis was to assess the association between NCI and aspartate aminotransferase-platelet ratio index (APRI) or Fibrosis-4, which are non-invasive scores use
