Stand structure and plant diversity characteristics of typical artificial forests after natural recovery in the hilly region of central Hainan.

INTRODUCTION: The global expansion of artificial forests has highlighted the necessity of restoring their ecological service functions and understanding natural succession mechanisms in forest restoration ecology. However, comprehensive analyses of community assembly in tropical artificial forests following long-term natural recovery and their divergence from zonal vegetation remain insufficient. METHODS: In this study, the stand structure and plant diversity were investigated in three typical tropical artificial forests (Acacia mangium, Hevea brasiliensis, and Eucalyptus) after 20 years of n

Confined Enzymolysis Strategy Based on the Plant Cell Hierarchical Structure for Enhancing Pathogen Resistance Infection and Alleviating Oxidative Stress in Rice.

Facing the complex pathogen infection microenvironment, single responsive nanopesticides hardly improved pesticide utilization. Herein, inspired by the plant cell hierarchical structure, pectin (PEC)-coated hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSNs) were used to prepare pectinase/pH dual-responsive hexaconazole-loaded nanopesticides (Hex/HMSN-PEC) via confined enzymolysis. Its acidic pH/pectinase responsiveness adapted to Rhizoctonia solani-induced microenvironments. It exhibited potent antifungal activity (EC50 = 0.783 mg/L), comparable to commercial hexaconazole suspension (Hex SC), yet

Harnessing plant-derived extracellular vesicles in advanced biomaterials: from structural scaffolds to responsive systems for next-generation wound therapeutics.

Chronic non-healing wounds, particularly diabetic foot ulcers, persist as a significant clinical challenge due to the limited availability of therapeutic options and the complexity of their pathological microenvironments. Plant-derived extracellular vesicles (PDEVs), which are nanoscale lipid carriers rich in bioactive molecules, have emerged as a promising therapeutic approach due to their low immunogenicity, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties, and their ability to promote angiogenesis. Structurally, the biomaterial protects the integrity of PDEVs and extends their residency through mo

Role of Plant-Derived Antioxidants in Oxidative Stress-Associated Myocardial Infarction: Structure-Activity Relationship (SAR)-Based Mechanistic Insights.

Among cardiovascular diseases, myocardial infarction (MI) has become one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, and the prevalence is anticipated to rise considerably in the coming years. Within non-surgical procedures, chemical drugs, including diuretics, vasodilators, calcium channel blockers, ꞵ blockers, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, are now a well-established option to treat MI progression. However, these drugs are not developed to mitigate oxidative stress directly, which has been recently proven to contribute to MI advancement. Naturally occurring antioxidant compounds

A Concise Review of Common Plant-derived Compounds as a Potential Therapy for Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease: Insight into Structure-Activity-Relationship.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are the two most common neurological illnesses that affect people in their later years. Memory loss is the hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, while dyskinesia, or loss of mobility, is associated with muscle rigidity and tremors in PD. Both diseases are unrelated, however, they do have a few similarities associated with extrapyramidal abnormalities, particularly stiffness, which has been linked to concomitant PD in many AD patients. Increased levels of IL-1, IL-6, and TNF in the AD and PD patients can be regarded as evidence of systemic inflam

Structural and functional characterization of an anti-West Nile virus monoclonal antibody and its single-chain variant produced in glycoengineered plants.

Previously, our group engineered a plant-derived monoclonal antibody (MAb pE16) that efficiently treated West Nile virus (WNV) infection in mice. In this study, we developed a pE16 variant consisting of a single-chain variable fragment (scFv) fused to the heavy chain constant domains (CH) of human IgG (pE16scFv-CH). pE16 and pE16scFv-CH were expressed and assembled efficiently in Nicotiana benthamiana ∆XF plants, a glycosylation mutant lacking plant-specific N-glycan residues. Glycan analysis revealed that ∆XF plant-derived pE16scFv-CH (∆XFpE16scFv-CH) and pE16 (∆XFpE16) both displayed a mamma

Integrative structural and physicochemical characterization of chalcone synthase enzymes from medicinal plants using AlphaFold, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics.

Chalcone synthase (CHS) is the entry-point enzyme of the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway, catalyzing the first committed step toward the production of diverse bioactive metabolites with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. Here, we conducted a comparative in silico characterization of CHS from 13 medicinal plants, with Arabidopsis thaliana included as reference species. Protein sequences retrieved from UniProtKB were aligned using ClustalW, revealing strong conservation of key motifs, particularly the catalytic triad (Cys-His-Asn), GFGPG motif, and catalytic loop. Precise structural characterization and therapeutic potential of a glucomannan polysaccharide from dried rhizome of plant Bletilla striata against ulcerative colitis.

Bletillae Rhizoma (Baiji), the dried tuber of Bletilla striata (Thunb.) Reichb.f. (BS), a traditional medicinal plant widely used in Chinese medicine. While polysaccharides from BS tuber (BSP) have attracted attention for their broad industrial applications, their detailed structural features and biological functions remain limited. In this study, a neutral polysaccharide (BSPN, 178 kDa), constituting about 80% of BSP, was extracted and purified. Structural analysis elucidated BSPN as a glucomannan (mannose: glucose = 4: 1), featuring a backbone of →4)-β-D-Manp-(1 → and →4)-β-D-Glcp-(1 → linka

Rhamnogalacturonan-I entrapped in insoluble plant cell wall networks: Structural basis, confinement mechanisms, and implications for targeted release: A review.

Rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) is a highly branched pectic polysaccharide whose recovery from plant-derived residues is often treated solely as an extraction problem. While the existing literature frequently investigates the physical and chemical behavior of total pectin, this review explicitly isolates the structural entrapment of the RG-I domain. We examine a complementary explanation: the retention of RG-I within insoluble plant cell wall networks. Evidence from solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, selective extraction, enzymatic digestion, adsorption models, and compositional analyses is s

The S1 to S2 and S2 to S3 state transitions in plant photosystem II: relevance to the functional and structural heterogeneity of the water oxidizing complex.

In Photosystem II, light-induced water splitting occurs via the S state cycle of the CaMn4O5-cluster. To understand the role of various possible conformations of the CaMn4O5-cluster in this process, the temperature dependence of the S1 → S2 and S2 → S3 state transitions, induced by saturating laser flashes, was studied in spinach photosystem II membrane preparations under different conditions. The S1 → S2 transition temperature dependence was shown to be much dependent on the type of the cryoprotectant and presence of 3.5% methanol, resulting in the variation of transition half-inhibition temp
