Dancers With Chronic Ankle Instability Have Different Regional Plantar Force During Single-Leg Jump Landing.

Background: It is already known that the prevalence of ankle sprain is high in dancers, leading to chronic ankle instability (CAI) and, consequently, affecting jump landing. Therefore, methods that allow the early identification of jump landing alterations related to CAI are necessary. Research Question: This study aimed to investigate if regional plantar force estimated from plantar pressure distribution is different between dancers with and without ankle instability during jump landing. Methods: Female dancers with (n = 12) and without (n = 14) CAI performed single-leg jumps on a force plate

Irreducible plantar dislocation of the interphalangeal joint of the great toe due to an accessory sesamoid bone: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Great toe dislocation frequently occurs at the metatarsophalangeal joint. However, an irreducible dislocation of the great toe interphalangeal (IP) joint due to an accessory sesamoid bone is relatively unusual. CASE REPORT: A 23-year-old woman suffered a dislocated IP joint of the left great toe. The distal phalanx was plantar subluxated, and the articular surface was misaligned. Ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography images did not indicate any factors inhibiting reduction. In addition, the sesamoid bone at the IP joint was found to be rotated in the lo

Anatomy and Physiology of the Lesser Metatarsophalangeal Joints.

Knowledge and command of anatomy is paramount to effectively treating disorders of the lesser metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints. The osseous structures consist of the proximal phalanx of the toe and the metatarsal head. The soft tissues on the dorsum of the MTP joint include the joint capsule and the tendons of extensor digitorum longus and extensor digitorum brevis. The proper and accessory collateral ligaments form the medial and lateral walls and contribute to stability in the coronal and sagittal planes. The plantar plate forms the plantar border of the MTP joint and stabilizes the MTP join

Use of high-resolution ultrasound in evaluation of the forefoot to differentiate forefoot nerve entrapments.

Forefoot pain can have single or multiple etiologies, and frequently pain is attributed solely to a forefoot nerve entrapment. It is well known that forefoot nerve entrapments, such as Morton's, can be falsely assumed to be the cause of forefoot pain when in fact other factors, such as plantar plate disturbances, are the true cause. Frequently, the cause of the patient's forefoot pain starts as a forefoot nerve entrapment, but then, as a result of treatment with a corticosteroid injection, other pathologies manifest, such as plantar plate rupture. The development of high-resolution, high-frequ

Influence of metatarsal head displacement on metatarsal pressure distribution after hallux valgus surgery.

We reviewed 63 feet after plain subcapital osteotomy for simultaneous correction of hallux valgus and metatarsus primus varus. Results were evaluated clinically and by radiographs and force plate measurements. Eighty-three percent of the patients were satisfied with their surgery. The hallux valgus angle was improved by 9.3 degrees and the intermetatarsal angle by 6 degrees. The osteotomy resulted in a displacement of the metatarsal head in the lateral direction (10 mm) and in the plantar direction (11.3 mm). Normalization of the load distribution on the metatarsal head was achieved in the gro

Ultrasonography-Based Quantitative Evaluation of Second Metatarsophalangeal Joint Instability in Female Patients With Hallux Valgus.

BACKGROUND: Patients with moderate to severe hallux valgus (HV) sometimes exhibit second metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint dislocation. Second MTP joint instability due to plantar plate (PP) injury has been suggested as one of the causes. However, there have been no reports that quantitatively evaluate this instability. This study aimed to evaluate second MTP joint instability in patients with HV without dislocation via ultrasonography and investigate its relationship with the presence of PP injury or foot form. METHODS: Between May 2018 and July 2023, symptomatic female patients with HV withou

Plantar soft tissues and Achilles tendon thickness and stiffness in people with diabetes: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is associated with changes in soft tissue structure and function. However, the directionality of this change and the extent to which either tissue thickness or stiffness contributes to the pathogenesis of diabetes-related foot ulcerations is unclear. Hence, this systematic review aims to summarise the existing evidence for soft tissue structural differences in the feet of people with and without diabetes. METHODS: In compliance with MOOSE and PRISMA guidelines, AMED, CINAHL, MEDLINE, ProQuest Health & Medical Collection, ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Database,

Dorsal modified calcaneal plate for extensive midfoot arthrodesis.

BACKGROUND: Extensive midfoot fusions can be challenging because of bone loss, deformity, and soft tissue anatomy. Several options have been advocated, including multiple screw fixation, medial plating, and plantar plating. We report a new technique using a dorsally-placed, modified calcaneal plate for treatment of this difficult clinical problem. METHODS: Patients undergoing extensive (more than four joints) midfoot arthrodeses with a dorsally-placed, modified calcaneal plate between 2000 and 2003 were retrospectively reviewed. Diagnoses included Charcot arthropathy (four), osteoarthritis (t

Effect of 3D printed foot orthoses stiffness and design on foot kinematics and plantar pressures in healthy people.

BACKGROUND: Foot orthoses (FOs) have been widely prescribed to alter various lower limb disorders. FOs' geometrical design and material properties have been shown to influence their impact on foot biomechanics. New technologies such as 3D printing provide the potential to produce custom shapes and add functionalities to FOs by adding extra-components. RESEARCH QUESTION: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of 3D printed FOs stiffness and newly design postings on foot kinematics and plantar pressures in healthy people. METHODS: Two pairs of ¾ length prefabricated 3D printed F

Pedobarographic Analysis following Ponseti Treatment for Unilateral Neglected Congenital Clubfoot.

Recent trends have led to an interest in Ponseti treatment for correcting neglected congenital clubfoot. Although good clinical and functional outcomes have been reported, the plantar pressure distribution after the treatment of neglected clubfoot has not been explored yet. The present study aimed to investigate whether plantar pressures normalized following Ponseti treatment in patients with neglected congenital clubfoot. Pedobarographic, clinical, and functional examinations were performed in 22 children (aged, 91.0 ± 40.3 months) with unilateral neglected congenital clubfeet, treated using

Role of Hip Internal Rotation Range and Foot Progression Angle for Preventing Jones Fracture During Crossover Cutting.

Jones fracture is a common injury in soccer players, caused by overload on the fifth metatarsal (M5) that can occur during crossover cutting. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the hip internal rotation (HIR) range in passive and dynamic conditions and foot progression angle (FPA) on the forces applied to the M5 during crossover cutting. The study included 20 men with experience playing soccer. The passive HIR was measured in the prone position. A 3-dimensional motion analysis system, force plates, and Footscan were used to measure the angle of the lower limb, including dynamic HIR

Influence of limb dominance on compensatory foot contacts during unilateral standing in adults with reduced plantar sensation.

BACKGROUND: Postural stability during unilateral stance is an important indicator of functional independence and fall risk in older adults. However, the compensatory strategies used to maintain balance under conditions of sensory impairment remain unclear. This study investigated how limb dominance affects postural control, which was measured by the duration and frequency of contralateral foot contacts during unilateral stance in adults with reduced plantar sensation. METHODS: Thirty-eight right-limb dominant individuals with reduced plantar foot sensation and 33 control participants were inc

Cardamonin attenuates hyperalgesia and allodynia in a mouse model of chronic constriction injury-induced neuropathic pain: Possible involvement of the opioid system.

Neuropathic pain arises from the injury of nervous system. The condition is extremely difficult to be treated due to the ineffectiveness and presence of various adverse effects of the currently available drugs. In the present study, we investigated the antiallodynic and antihyperlagesic properties of cardamonin, a naturally occurring chalcone in chronic constriction injury (CCI)-induced neuropathic pain mice model. Our findings showed that single and repeated dose of intra-peritoneal administration of cardamonin (3, 10, 30mg/kg) significantly inhibited (P<0.001) the chronic constriction injury

Medial and Lateral Column Load Distribution After In Situ Subtalar/Talonavicular Fusion With and Without Calcaneocuboid Fusion: A Cadaveric Study.

BACKGROUND: Previous investigations have speculated that stiffening the lateral column of the hindfoot in triple arthrodesis can increase lateral plantar pressure with resulting lateral column pain. It is unclear whether sparing of the calcaneocuboid joint in hindfoot arthrodesis yields lower lateral column plantar forefoot pressures vs triple arthrodesis including the calcaneocuboid joint. METHODS: Tendon loading and axial pressure were applied to 9 cadaveric legs according to standard cadaveric models. Medial and lateral forefoot pressures were recorded using a pressure-sensitive plate. Spe

Reconstruction of the great toe ski-slope, sunken-nail deformity with a buried adipofascial flap.

Development of a ski-slope deformity following loss of the great toe nail plate is a problematic condition with few conservative or surgical options available. The condition becomes more difficult to treat when the distal, medial, and lateral labial nail folds are hypertrophied, creating the appearance of a sunken nail. We present a case of ski-slope, sunken-nail deformity following multiple attempts at chemical nail matrixectomy. The patient's persistent pain and deformity were managed through 1) nail plate avulsion and complete surgical excision of the germinal nail matrix, 2) remodeling of
