Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is an aggressive type of large B-cell lymphoma as stated in the WHO classification of 2008. It is a rare form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, generally seen in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome affected individuals. A case of a 42-year-old female patient is presented here. The patient complained of swelling in the lower right back tooth region and presented with a history of extraction of molars. The underlying HIV status was detected after the oral examination. The diagnosis of PBL was confirmed with immunohistochemical analysis.

IntroductionPlasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare lymphoma associated with immunosuppression. It is strongly associated with immunosuppression (human immunodeficiency virus [HIV]) and often occurs within the oral cavity. PBL is also seen in patients receiving immunosuppressive therapy; however, despite its predisposition for the immunocompromised patients, PBL has been diagnosed in immunocompetent patients.AimThis study aims to prognostic factors and outcome of PBL in immunocompromised and in immunocompetent patients.Materials and methodsWe conducted a retrospective study at our institute fro

Plasmablastic lymphoma is a rare, highly aggressive lymphoma characterized by large lymphoid cells with immunoblastic or plasmablastic features, absent expression of CD45 and CD20, positivity for CD138, and monoclonal rearrangement of the immunoglobulin heavy chain gene. It was originally reported in oral cavity in the setting of underlying human immunodeficiency viral infection but may occur also in lymph nodes or extranodal sites after transplantation and, more rarely, immunocompetent patients. Herein, we report a case of PBL presenting as an ulcerated lesion of the tongue in an HIV-negative

Histologic transformation of low-grade B-cell lymphoma to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is associated with poor prognosis. Although plasma cell differentiation is common in these lymphomas, an overt plasmablastic transformation (PBL-T) has been only rarely reported. We report 6 cases of PBL-T occurring in 3 chronic lymphocytic leukemias (CLL) and 3 follicular lymphomas. Five patients were men, and the mean age was 65 years (range, 52 to 72 y). None of them had history of immunodeficiency. In 3 cases the PBL-T occurred 34 to 85 months after the initial diagnosis, and in 3 it was detected simult

INTRODUCTION: Plasmablastic lymphoma is an aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma classically occurring in individuals infected with HIV. Plasmablastic lymphoma has a predilection for the oral cavity and jaw. However, recent case reports have shown lymphoma in the stomach, lung, nasal cavity, cervical lymph nodes and jejunum in HIV-negative individuals. We report what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of plasmablastic lymphoma occurring in the ano-rectal junction of an HIV-negative man.
CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy 59-year-old Caucasian man presented with painless rectal bl

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare and aggressive subtype of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The potential association between Crohn's disease and lymphoproliferative disorders remains controversial. We present an unusual case of plasmablastic lymphoma arising in a patient with long-standing rectocolonic Crohn's disease, complicated by an enterocutaneous fistula. The patient underwent surgery including sigmoidectomy, fistula disconnection, colostomy, and wide skin excision. Histopathology confirmed plasmablastic lymphoma involving the colon, rectum, and skin. Our case is notable for the cha

INTRODUCTION: As a very rare form of B-cell lymphoma, plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) typically occurs in patients with underlying immunosuppression, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), organ transplantation, and autoimmune diseases. For HIV-positive patients, PBL normally originates in the gastrointestinal tract, especially from the oral cavity in most cases. It is extremely rare to find abdominal cavity involvement in PBL, and there has been no previously reported instance of proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal immunoglobulin deposits (PGNMID) attributed to monoclonal IgG

Plasmablastic lymphoma mutational profile is undescribed. Here we performed a targeted exonic NGS analysis of 30 plasmablastic lymphoma cases with a B cell lymphoma dedicated panel and FISH for the detection of MYC rearrangements. A complete phenotyping of the neoplastic and microenvironment cell populations was also performed. We have identified an enrichment in recurrent genetic events in MYC (69% with MYC translocation or amplification and 3 cases with missense point mutations), PRDM1/Blimp1 and STAT3 mutations. These gene mutations were more frequent in EBV positive disease. Other genetic

Activated phosphoinositide 3-kinase δ syndrome (APDS) is an autosomal dominant primary immunodeficiency caused by acquired gene function mutation (GOF). APDS has a variety of clinical phenotypes, particularly recurrent respiratory infections and lymphoproliferation. Here we report a pediatric patient with APDS who presented with recurrent respiratory infections, lymphoproliferation, hepatosplenomegaly, bronchoscopy suggesting numerous nodular protrusions in the airways and a decrease in both T and B lymphocytes, and progression to plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) after 1 year. INTRODUCTION: Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL), an extremely rare subtype of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), is characterized by aggressiveness, rapid progression and a bleak prognosis. Neither a standardized regimen nor a consensus for PBL treatment has been established.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathologic characteristics, therapeutic modalities and survival outcomes of 418 patients registered in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 2008 to 2016 and 21 (19 treated) patients in our institution. Kaplan-Meier survival curves and

OBJECTIVES: Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a clinically aggressive lymphoma which has a predilection for extranodal sites and is frequently HIV-associated. The incidence of non-Hodgkin lymphoma is thought to be reduced by widescale antiretroviral therapy (ART) coverage, but the literature is sparse as regards the impact of ART on the incidence of PBL and its outcomes in South Africa (SA). This study aimed to compare factors of interest in cases of PBL diagnosed before and after the widespread availability of ART in Johannesburg, SA.
METHODS: All cases of PBL diagnosed in the state sector hos

Plasmablastic lymphoma is a variant of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, characterized by rapid progression and is associated with a poor outcome. We report a 35-year-old male with poorly controlled HIV infection and AIDS who presented with skin lesions and swelling throughout the body. Computed tomography (CT) revealed innumerable enhancing soft tissue masses within the subcutaneous soft tissues and lymphadenopathy. Plasmablastic lymphoma was diagnosed, patient was treated with chemotherapy, and post treatment CT demonstrated complete resolution. Imaging plays a key role in the diagnosis and sur

BACKGROUND: Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL), a rare non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) variant specifically associated with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS), expresses well-differentiated plasma cell markers like CD138, bright CD38, and MUM1; but not conventional B-cell markers. It occurs at unusual sites like oral cavity and orbit, and has poor survival rates.
AIMS: This study serves as a review of a clinical experience with six HIV patients with PBL and observes the spectrum of clinical presentations, histopathologies, and 1-year outcomes in PBL patients.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related lymphomas are predominantly aggressive B-cells lymphomas. The most prevalent of the HIV-related lymphomas are diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), which includes primary central nervous system lymphoma, and Burkitt lymphoma, whereas primary effusion lymphoma, plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL), and classic Hodgkin lymphoma are far less frequent. Of these, PBL is relatively uncommon and displays a distinct predilection for presentation in the oral cavity. In this manuscript, we report a primary testicular form of PBL in 44 year-old Border Secur

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare lymphoproliferative disease that can affect immunocompromised post-transplant patients. Patients with positive human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) status are at high risk. PBL shares many immunological markers and cytological characteristics with plasmacytic myeloma, which can lead to uncertainty and delay in diagnosis. However, myeloma typically involves the bone marrow, and the presence of other laboratory findings in myeloma, such as paraproteinemia, renal disease, and hypercalcemia, along with careful review of the biopsy,

This study aims to characterize the tumor microenvironment of plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) in regard to the quantities of CD163(+) tumor associated macrophages (TAM) and PD1(+) tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL). This article also reviews the existing knowledge of the role of PD-1/PD-L1 pathway in the tumor microenvironment of hematopoietic neoplasms, discusses potential mechanisms to explain our findings, and outlines areas for future studies. We performed CD163 and PD1 immunohistochemical studies in 11 cases classified as plasmablastic lymphoma, and recorded the percentages of positive TAM

CD20-negative diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is a rare entity and constitutes 1-2% of all DLBCLs. Major subtypes include plasmablastic lymphomas (PBLs), primary effusion lymphomas, anaplastic kinase positive large B-cell lymphomas, and large B-cell lymphomas arising in human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8)-associated multicentric Castleman disease. Amongst the known subtypes, PBL is the most common and presents as an aggressive extranodal disease with high resistance to routine chemotherapy regimens, thereby posing a therapeutic challenge. Though more commonly seen in HIV-positive patients, PBL ca

Richter syndrome (RS) is considered as the rare development of an aggressive lymphoid malignancy in a preexisting small lymphocytic lymphoma/chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The most common aggressive lymphoma developing in this setting is diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, but classical Hodgkin lymphoma and other much rarer entities such as prolymphocytic lymphoma and dendritic cell sarcoma are also described, most frequently in the progression of the disease over time. A clonal relation between the 2 neoplastic proliferations can be frequently found, whereas clonally unrelated cases are commonly co
