Changes in the central and peripheral circulatory system in response to the cold: own studies using impedance plethysmography and Doppler ultrasound.

The aim of the study was to determine the cardiovascular response to continuous (4 °C for 60 min) and intermittent (10 min at 4 °C and 10 min at room temperature alternately) exposure to the cold in 30 healthy young men. The subjects were equipped with a set of identical clothing (insulation 2.1 clo) and during the stay in the chamber and outside performed the same activities, i.e., walking on a treadmill at a speed of 0.5 km/h. The tests included assessing the central circulatory system using the Holter system and assessing the peripheral circulatory system using impedance plethysmography and

Comparison of air-displacement plethysmography with hydrostatic weighing and bioelectrical impedance analysis for the assessment of body composition in healthy adults.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, considerable attention has been paid to accurately measuring body composition in diverse populations. Recently, the use of air-displacement plethysmography (AP) was proposed as an accurate, comfortable, and accessible method of body-composition analysis. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare measurements of percentage body fat (%BF) by AP and 2 other established techniques, hydrostatic weighing (HW) and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), in adults. DESIGN: The sample consisted of healthy men (n = 23) and women (n = 24). %BF was measured by

Case report: respiratory inductance plethysmography as a monitor of ventilation during laser ablation and balloon dilatation of subglottic tracheal stenosis.

We describe a 61-year-old female who underwent KTP laser ablation and CRE balloon dilatation of symptomatic idiopathic subglottic stenosis (50% obstruction). The procedure was conducted, using our standard approach for such cases, under total intravenous general anesthesia with subglottic high-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) via Lindholm laryngoscope. The patient was enrolled in an ongoing investigational protocol in which respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIP; Ambulatory Monitoring Inc., Ardsley, N.Y., USA) bands were used to monitor ventilation in addition to pulse oximetry and visual

Assessment of the peripheral microcirculation using computer-assisted venous congestion plethysmography in post-traumatic complex regional pain syndrome type I.

In complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS-I), edema of the affected limb is a common finding. Therefore, the changes in macro- and microcirculatory parameters were investigated to elucidate the underlying pathophysiology. Twenty-four patients with post-traumatic CRPS-I and 25 gender- and age-matched healthy subjects were examined by means of an advanced computer-assisted venous congestion strain-gauge plethysmograph. The recording of the volume response of the forearm to a stepwise inflation of an occlusion cuff placed at the upper arm enabled the calculation of the arterial blood flow in

Comparing Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, Air Displacement Plethysmography, and Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry for Body Composition in Pediatric Obesity.

BACKGROUND: Body composition analysis is crucial in clinical practice, yet few methods are suitable for pediatric patients, and data on young children with obesity are limited. METHODS: This study measured body fat percentage (BFP), fat mass (FM), and fat-free mass (FFM) in 26 pediatric patients with obesity (BMI: 35.6±6.9 kg/m2), using two bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) devices (TANITA and BIACORPUS), and the results were compared to those of the gold-standard dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Additionally, air displacement plethysmography (BODPOD) was compared with DXA, and al

Dynamic Changes in Lung Function and Blood Flow During Lung Adenocarcinoma Progression in Mice by Whole-body Plethysmography and Doppler Ultrasound.

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is a common malignant pulmonary tumor, and its progression leads to alterations in ventilation and blood flow, highlighting the distinct functional characteristics of the lung under pathological conditions. The non-invasive whole-body plethysmography (WBP) system enables real-time monitoring of lung function and airway responsiveness in awake mice, avoiding interference from tracheotomy and anesthesia. Small animal Doppler ultrasound (DU), utilizing high-frequency imaging technology, non-invasively captures microvascular structures and changes in pulmonary blood flow

Electrical Impedance Plethysmography Versus Tonometry To Measure the Pulse Wave Velocity in Peripheral Arteries in Young Healthy Volunteers: a Pilot Study.

The leading cause of health loss and deaths worldwide are cardiovascular diseases. A predictor of cardiovascular diseases and events is the arterial stiffness. The pulse wave velocity (PWV) can be used to estimate arterial stiffness non-invasively. The tonometer is considered as the gold standard for measuring PWV. This approach requires manual probe fixation above the artery and depends on the skills of the operator. Electrical impedance plethysmography (IPG) is an interesting alternative using skin surface sensing electrodes, that is miniaturizable, cost-effective and allows measurement of d

Of Mice and Men and Plethysmography Systems: Does LKB1 Determine the Set Point of Carotid Body Chemosensitivity and the Hypoxic Ventilatory Response?

Our recent studies suggest that the level of liver kinase B1 (LKB1) expression in some way determines carotid body afferent discharge during hypoxia and to a lesser extent during hypercapnia. In short, phosphorylation by LKB1 of an as yet unidentified target(s) determines a set point for carotid body chemosensitivity. LKB1 is the principal kinase that activates the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) during metabolic stresses, but conditional deletion of AMPK in catecholaminergic cells, including therein carotid body type I cells, has little or no effect on carotid body responses to hypoxia or

Imaging video plethysmography shows reduced signal amplitude in glaucoma patients in the area of the microvascular tissue of the optic nerve head.

PURPOSE: To measure parameters of the cardiac cycle-induced pulsatile light absorption signal (plethysmography signal) of the optic nerve head (ONH) and to compare parameters between normal subjects and patients with different stages of glaucoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A recently developed video ophthalmoscope was used to acquire short video sequences (10 s) of the ONH. After image registration and trend correction, the pulsatile changing light absorption at the ONH tissue (excluding large vessels) was calculated. The changing light absorption depends on the pulsatile changing blood volume. Va

Long-term tolerability of capnography and respiratory inductance plethysmography for respiratory monitoring in pediatric patients treated with patient-controlled analgesia.

BACKGROUND: The Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation has advocated the use of continuous electronic monitoring of oxygenation and ventilation to preemptively identify opioid-induced respiratory depression. In adults, capnography is the gold standard in respiratory monitoring. An alternative technique used in sleep laboratories is respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIP). However, it is not known if either monitor is well tolerated by pediatric patients for prolonged periods of time. AIM: The goal of this study was to determine whether capnography or RIP is better tolerated in nonintubated

Forearm Volume Changes Estimated by Photo-Plethysmography During an Original Candlestick/Prayer Maneuver in Patients With Suspected Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.

Objective: Hemodynamic investigations in thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) remain difficult, even in trained hands. Results are generally reported as either presence or absence of venous compression. In fact, in patients with suspected TOS but without chronic venous occlusion, the forearm volume changes may result from various combinations of forearm position from heart level, arterial inflow, and/or venous outflow positional impairment. Design: Cross sectional, retrospective, single center study, accessible on Clinicaltrial.gov under reference NCT04376177. Material: We used venous photo-plethysm

Breathing pattern recordings using respiratory inductive plethysmography, before and after a physiotherapy breathing retraining program for asthma: A case report.

Breathing retraining (BR) improves symptoms, psychological well-being and quality of life in adults with asthma; but there remains uncertainty as to mechanism of effect. One of the intuitively logical theories is that BR works through altering breathing pattern. There is currently no evidence, however, that BR does result in measurable changes in breathing pattern. In this case report we describe the effects of physiotherapy BR on a 57-year-old female with a 10-year history of asthma. Data were collected before and after a physiotherapy BR program comprising three sessions over 18 weeks: breat
