Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a mesenchymal neoplasm that was originally described to be localized in the pleura, but thereafter, this has been reported in several anatomic sites. Although the etiology of the neoplasm remains largely unknown, the pathogenesis seems to be related to an NAB2-STAT6 fusion gene due to paracentric inversion on chromosome 12q13. The diagnosis of extrapleural SFT is challenging, owing to its rarity, and requires an integrated approach that includes specific clinical, histological, immunohistochemical, and even molecular findings. Histologically, extrapleural SFT sh

Malignant mesothelioma is a neoplasm that can arise from the mesothelial surface of the pleura and tends to be locally invasive. Various techniques have been used for diagnosis and include thoracentesis with pleural fluid cytology, closed pleural biopsy, and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Thoracentesis and closed pleural biopsy can often establish the presence of malignancy, but frequently do not provide sufficient tissue to definitively diagnose malignant mesothelioma. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery biopsy has higher sensitivity for establishing the diagnosis, but is a more invas

Two major type of lymphoma involve the pleura as primary neoplasms: primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) in the setting of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, and pyothorax-associated lymphomas (PAL), with a strong Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) or pyothorax association. However, indolent B cell lymphoma initially manifested as pleural effusion is an extremely rare clinical occurrence. In this study, we report a case of 52-year-old woman with no history of HIV infection or pyothorax, who only manifested long-term massive bilateral pleural effusion. This patient was characterized by lymphocytic

Ectopic pleural thymoma is an exceedingly uncommon clinical entity that has only been described sporadically. Because of their peculiar location and variety of histologic patterns manifested, pleural thymomas may be confused with other neoplasms and may cause diagnostic problems clinically, radiologically, and morphologically. We describe the case of a giant left-sided ectopic pleural thymoma, preoperatively suspected to be a solitary fibrous tumor. A complete surgical resection was achieved and a postoperative diagnosis of WHO Type AB, modified Masaoka stage I tumor was attained. Subsequent t

We reported and reviewed 8 cases including two authors' cases in the Japanese literature, the incidence of pneumothorax associated with primary pulmonary neoplasms was less than 0.05%, however, in the case of malignant pleural mesothelioma, was as high as 10.36%. Mean age of patients was 67 year-old and recurrent hydropneumothorax was characterized in the clinical course. For the elderly with hydropneumothorax, it was necessary to rule out the malignant mesothelioma based on the past history of asbestos exposure, analysis of value of hyaluronic acid in the pleural effusion and the CT scan find

Given the multiple impairments in host defense that occur during HIV infection, patients with AIDS are at risk for a variety of pleural infections and neoplasms. Of infectious causes, bacterial parapneumonic effusions and empyemas and tuberculous pleurisy occur more frequently than effusions caused by P. carinii. In each case, therapy is directed at eradication of the causative organisms. In the setting of systemic Kaposi's sarcoma, pleural involvement is common, although diagnosis is difficult and therapeutic options are limited. Pleural effusions caused by non-Hodgkin's lymphoma often occur

Mesothelioma is a neoplasm arising from the mesothelial cells lining the body serosal surfaces. The frequent primary sites include the pleura followed by the peritoneum and rarely the pericardium. Pleural mesothelioma encases the lung and fills the pleural space, which limits the lungs' ability to expand. The initial diagnosis requires the presence of characteristic clinical, radiological, and pathological features. A thorough review of the English language literature found no reports where a diagnosis of mesothelioma was made on material originating from bronchioalveolar lavage (BAL). We repo

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare neoplasm. It predominantly affects elderly individuals aged over 70 years presenting with a unilateral pleural tumor usually associated with previous asbestos exposure. The respiratory symptoms are associated with ipsilateral pleural involvement with concomitant pleural effusions. The diagnosis of MPM is established by the morphologic and immunohistochemical features of a cytologic specimen. MPM can present as three histologic subtypes: epithelioid, sarcomatoid, or biphasic. We present a case of an 85-year-old Caucasian female with a history of oc

The authors describe a 66 year old woman with small-cell carcinoma of the oesophagus who developed a perforation following chemotherapy. Small-cell carcinoma of the oesophagus is a rare neoplasm, varying in appearance from a small mucosal lesion to a larger fungating mass, which in our patient presented as a bulky soft-tissue mass causing stricture. Pleural fluid collections which developed via a spontaneous oesophageal-pleural fistula were subsequently drained using percutaneously placed catheters. Radiologic management of this condition provided a successful and cost-effective means of patie

BACKGROUND: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare malignant neoplasm of the pleura that typically affects individuals occupationally exposed to asbestos through a variety of industries. MPM presents with several CT features similar to more common pleural diseases such as metastatic pleural malignancy.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to differentiate malignant pleural mesothelioma from metastatic carcinoma of the pleura by pathological and radiological assessment in order to investigate accuracy of CT scan in this regard and to compare CT features of these two malignancies.

PATIENT: A case of a 76-year-old-man is reported who was referred to the department because of an increasing tumor of the right nasal cavity. After surgical treatment of the neoplasm histological examination revealed a solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the nasal mucosa.
DISCUSSION: Solitary fibrous tumors mostly occur as pleural neoplasms. Extrapleural locations of this mesenchymal tumor species are rarely found in the head and neck region. These extrapleural tumors are sometimes difficult to diagnose because of their histologic variability. Solitary fibrous tumors typically show intense staini

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a rare type of malignant hematological neoplasm. Although primarily involving the bone marrow, MM has a significant risk of metastasizing to other organs and may present with various clinical symptoms. However, the involvement of the respiratory system in the course of MM is extremely uncommon, particularly presenting with bilateral pleural effusion as the sole initial manifestation, which may result in a delayed diagnosis of MM. The present study describes the extremely rare case of a patient with MM presenting with myelomatous pleural effusion (MPE). The 78-year-old

Myoepithelial carcinoma (MECA) is one of the rarest salivary gland neoplasms, which may either arise de novo or develop within a preexisting pleomorphic adenoma or benign myoepithelioma. The tumor occurs mainly in the parotid gland followed by minor salivary glands and other body sites. As a result of their morphologic heterogeneity, they can be confused easily with many tumors. Awareness of their unique cytoarchitectural patterns and immunohistochemical profile is crucial for accurate identification. Herein, we report a rare case of a 51-year-old female patient with MECA of the maxillary sinu

The occurrence of spindle cell tumors of the pleural other than the conventional sarcomatoid mesothelioma or solitary fibrous tumor, is rather unusual. Clinically and radiologically, patients with these tumors may show similar features as those associated with the more common neoplasms of the pleura. Therefore, histopathologic assessment of those lesions is highly important. However, it is also important to highlight the role that immunohistochemistry plays in separating these tumors, as some of these neoplasms may show similar immunophenotype with mesothelioma. Even though in most of these ca

Solitary fibrous tumors are rare and typically benign fibroblastic neoplasms with a mean age of onset ranging from 60 to 70 years. Solitary fibrous tumors may arise anywhere within the body, however the pleura is the most common site of origin for these tumors, with approximately 30% of tumors arising from the pleura. In this report we highlight the case of a 62-year-old woman who presented with gradually progressive left sided chest pain that was eventually diagnosed as a pleural SFT. We highlight the appearance of solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura on computed tomography and positron emiss

Mammary carcinomas in cats are highly aggressive neoplasms, often with the development of metastasis. Pleomorphic lobular carcinoma, on the other hand, is an invasive carcinoma with aggressive behavior, rarely diagnosed in humans and dogs. This report describes a case of pleomorphic lobular carcinoma in cats. The histopathological and immunohistochemical features of the neoplasm in this species were characterized. The neoplasm was diagnosed in a 10-year-old cat, with regional lymph node involvement at the time of diagnosis, but without systemic signs based on imaging tests performed prior to m

Multiple myeloma is a relatively common hematologic malignancy; however, serous cavity effusions occur infrequently, and bona fide myelomatous effusions are exceedingly rare, typically representing an advanced, biologically aggressive variant associated with dismal outcomes. We report a compelling case of a 50-year-old patient with established multiple myeloma who developed leukemic transformation with concurrent pleural cavity infiltration while receiving systemic chemotherapy. The patient exhibited rapidly progressive dyspnea, a nonproductive cough, and debilitating fatigue in the days prece

Renal cell carcinoma is the most common renal neoplasm. Its presentation is often very occult, and it may be discovered incidentally. It may present with the classic symptoms of back pain, flank pain, hematuria, or hypertension. Renal cell carcinoma may also present with malignant pleural effusion at diagnosis; however, it is very rare. In this case report and literature review, we describe a 77-year-old male who was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma after presenting with a malignant pleural effusion - an extremely rare phenomenon. An analysis of the literature yielded 13 case reports, inclu

Pleural effusions are rarely observed in patients with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS)/myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN). Therefore the underlying etiology of pleural effusions and the efficacy and safety of pleural procedures in this population has not been well studied. In a retrospective review of cases from 1997 to 2007, we identified 111 patients with acute leukemia or MDS/MPN who underwent pleural procedures. Clinical characteristics were reviewed, and survival outcomes were estimated by Kaplan-Meier methods. A total o

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an asbestos-related neoplasm that originates in pleural mesothelial cells and progresses locally along the pleura until it encases the lungs and mediastinum, ultimately causing death. Imaging plays a crucial role in diagnosis and optimal management. Computed tomography (CT) continues to be the primary and initial imaging modality. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) complements CT scan and is superior in determining chest wall and diaphragmatic invasion. FDG18-PET/CT provides anatamo-metabolic information and is superior to both CT and MRI in overall stagin
