Extracorporeal treatments in poisonings from four non-traditionally dialysed toxins (acetaminophen, digoxin, opioids and tricyclic antidepressants): A combined single-centre and national study.

The use of extracorporeal treatments (ECTRs) for poisonings with four non-traditionally dialysed toxins (NTDTs) is increasing in the United States. This study evaluated whether ECTRs are prescribed for toxin removal or the treatment of other medical illnesses or complications. We performed a 2-Phase retrospective analysis evaluating the main indication for ECTRs in patients with poisoning from a NTDT (defined for this study as acetaminophen, opioids, tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) or digoxin) and ECTR. The first phase assessed all cases from a single site (New York City Poison Control Center

Single-substance trazodone exposures reported to US poison centers from 2000 to 2019.

BACKGROUND: Individual case reports describe trazodone overdose resulting in QTc prolongation and cardiac arrhythmias. The clinical effects and outcomes associated with trazodone exposures on a large-scale basis are less well known. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective was to characterize the severity of single substance trazodone exposures and identify any relationships that may exist between dose of trazodone and severity of exposure. The secondary objective was to describe these exposures from a demographic and clinical symptom standpoint. METHODS: A retrospective review of single-substance t

A different challenge with Benadryl: adolescent diphenhydramine ingestions reported to National Poison Database System, 2007-2020.

BACKGROUND: The US Food and Drug Administration released a warning related to potential adverse effects related to intentional misuse or abuse ingestions of diphenhydramine in September 2020. We sought to evaluate adolescent-aged (13-19 y) diphenhydramine ingestions reported to US poison control centers to characterize these exposures, adverse effects, outcomes, and trends in outcomes and reasons for ingestion. METHODS: The US National Poison Database System was queried for all exposures to diphenhydramine between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2020. RESULTS: 47,644 ingestions were include

Descriptive epidemiology of clinically significant occupational poisonings, United States, 2008-2018.

INTRODUCTION: References listing common occupational poisons often include agents that were observed decades prior to the introduction of worker protective laws and regulations. Current causes of work-related acute poisonings have not been characterized. This study's primary objective was to describe the most common poisons and routes of exposure responsible for clinically significant occupational poisonings. A secondary objective was to determine the crude rate of clinically significant occupational poisonings and occupational poisoning-related deaths over the study period. METHODS: This was

Suspected poisoning of domestic animals by pesticides.

A retrospective study was carried out by reviewing all suspected cases of domestic animal poisoning attributed to pesticides, reported to the Milan Poison Control Centre (MPCC) between January 2011 and December 2013. During this period, pesticides were found to be responsible for 37.3% of all suspected poisoning enquiries received (815). The most commonly species involved was the dog (71.1% of calls) followed by the cat (15.8%), while a limited number of cases involved horses, goats and sheep. Most cases of exposure (47.1%) resulted in mild to moderate clinical signs. The outcome was reported

Animal poisoning in Europe. Part 2: Companion animals.

This is the second in a series of three review articles on animal poisoning in Europe and focuses on cases in pet animals and horses in five European countries (Belgium, France, Greece, Italy and Spain) reported over the last decade. In the participating countries, dogs were the most commonly poisoned species, particularly younger animals. The majority of cases in companion animals resulted from exposure to insecticides, although rodenticides (especially anticoagulants and strychnine) posed a significant risk. In all five countries, horses and cats appeared to be more susceptible to plant toxi

[Poisoning by anorexigenics. Information from the data bank of the Anti-Poison Center of Marseille (1973)].

Using the data bank developed by the Computer Service of the Lyon Hospitals, the Anti-Poisons Centre of Marseille presents an initial study of intoxications by appetite suppressants. The work was complemented by a simultaneous study using conventional manual techniques. An epidemiologic review of 1973 and an approximate assessment of toxic doses in the adult and child were possible. They should be of particular use in answering telephone enquiries at anti-poison centres.

Prevalence of anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning in humans and animals in France and substances involved.

INTRODUCTION: Anticoagulant rodenticides have been used for over 50 years to control rodent populations. Since their first introduction, resistance developed in rodents, and second-generation products, more active but also more toxic, have been marketed. These compounds are currently being reviewed under European Regulations. METHODS: The purpose of this work is to describe anticoagulant poisoning based on retrospective data from French human and animal poison control centers. Cases from 2004 to 2007 were collected. RESULTS: Overall, the proportion of anticoagulant exposure reported to the L

Chlorpyrifos: a ten-year US poison center exposure experience.

We performed a retrospective review of data based on poison center exposure inquiries related to chlorpyrifos (CP) and the corresponding poison center-determined medical outcomes reported to the Toxic Exposure Surveillance System (TESS) of the American Association of Poison Control Centers. Ten y (1985-1994) of TESS data were obtained. Medical outcomes representing all inquiries, accidental/unintentional inquiries, and intentional/suicidal inquiries were tabulated. Published TESS data was also tabulated to allow comparison of CP exposure inquiries to all non-pharmaceutical and insecticides/pes

A review of chemical eye burns referred to the Blodgett Regional Poison Center.

We reviewed a random sampling of 500 cases of chemical eye exposures referred to the Blodgett Regional Poison Center from July 1, 1986 to December 31, 1986. While some injuries were encountered in laboratories and industrial plants, the great majority originated in the home (84.4%) and involved commonly used household products. Most exposures were acute and reported within minutes to 1 hr. Cases predominantly involved children suffering accidental exposure. The most common symptoms were eye discomfort (56.2%) and redness (26.4%), but many patients were completely asymptomatic (11.4%). The repo
