Medical problems and criteria regarding the use of tear gas by police.

Litigation against police agencies for the use and misuse of control agents and procedures has become an important issue for the forensic medical specialist and expert witness. As police technology improves, it becomes apparent that more information for forensic experts will be required in this area. One such area of concern is the use of tear gas by police. This paper addresses the basic types of gas in terms of their chemistry, uses, and medical side effects and complications. Two types of gases--namely, chloroacetophenone (CN) and orthochlorobenzylidenemalontrile (CS)--are discussed in term

Reconceptualizing Polyvictimization: Integrating Self-Reported Victimization and Police Use of Force.

Research on police violence (PV) narrowly defines it as physical force, disregarding its other forms, like psychological violence and neglect, and its co-occurrence with non-police victimization (NPV). This omission is important because of overlapping risk factors and potential compounding harm. Using the National Crime Victimization Survey and Police-Public Contact Survey, this study employs a more expansive definition that includes psychological and neglectful PV and assesses the overlap of these harms with NPV. Psychological PV was the most experienced form, and it was most prevalent among

Clinical forensic medical assessment insights from fitness for police interview consultations.

BACKGROUND: A medical assessment to determine fitness for interview (FFI) is undertaken prior to police interview to guide officers on a suspect's interview readiness. Being fit for police interview strengthens the admissibility of evidence, supports legal compliance and integrity, and ensures that a suspect can self-advocate in a fair and honest interview process. This retrospective clinical audit describes and evaluates the biopsychosocial factors involved in FFI assessments. METHOD: This is a retrospective clinical audit of all 215 cases who underwent fitness for interview assessments over

Occupational trauma and probable PTSD among sworn and civilian police employees.

Background: Police personnel are frequently exposed to potentially traumatic events (PTEs), increasing their risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While much research has focused on sworn police officers (SPOs), less is known about civilian employees (Civilians) who work alongside them. This study examined trauma exposure and probable PTSD in both groups within the Norwegian Police Service (NPS).Methods: A random sample of 4,000 employees received an invitation to a web-based survey in 2021, of which 560 responded (61.8% SPOs, 38.2% Civilians). Trauma exposure was assessed with the Li

The Hennepin Healthcare Forced Ketamine Studies, Excited Delirium, and Police Violence.

In the summer of 2018, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported clinical trials at Hennepin County Medical Center in which emergency medical personnel were injecting agitated individuals with ketamine, often at the urging of police. These individuals were enrolled in the trials without their knowledge or consent. In one of the studies, nearly 40 percent of subjects given ketamine experienced breathing issues so serious that they had to be intubated. Many subjects were members of vulnerable, marginalized groups. In this paper, we describe the ways in which the Hennepin Healthcare ketamine studies

Sleep apnea and daytime sleepiness in police officers from Kerala, India.

BACKGROUND: Globally, poor sleep is a significant public health problem. Healthy sleep is important for physical and mental well-being, particularly for individuals who work in environments with shift schedules. However, this issue has not been adequately addressed, especially in low-and-middle-income settings. This study examined sleep apnea and excessive daytime sleepiness among police officers in Kerala, India, and explored the factors associated with these conditions. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional study design, we collected data from 253 police officers selected from 14 police stations

Exposures to potentially psychologically traumatic events among Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

OBJECTIVE: Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are among the public safety sectors reporting the highest exposures to diverse potentially psychologically traumatic events (PPTEs), which contribute to the risk of developing mental health disorders. Current increases in prevalence of mental health disorders among RCMP are substantial and warrant updated prevalence estimates of PPTE exposures. The objective of the present study was to provide updated estimates of lifetime PPTE exposures among RCMP and assess for associations with mental disorders and sociodemographic variables. METHOD: Particip

Prevalence of current chronic pain in Royal Canadian Mounted Police cadets.

BACKGROUND: Nearly half of active duty Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers report experiencing current chronic pain (43%; i.e. pain lasting longer than 3 months). Most RCMP officers who report chronic pain indicate that the pain started after working as RCMP officers (91%). Baseline data on chronic pain prevalence among RCMP cadets has not been available. AIMS: The current study was designed to provide cross-sectional estimates of chronic pain prevalence among RCMP cadets starting the Cadet Training Program and to assess for sociodemographic differences among participants. METHODS:

Mental health and social support among Royal Canadian Mounted Police cadets.

INTRODUCTION: Certain populations, such as public safety personnel (PSP), experience frequent exposures to potentially psychologically traumatic events and other occupational stressors, increasing their risk for mental health challenges. Social support has been evidenced as a protective factor for mental health. However, research examining perceived social support and its associations with symptoms related to mental disorders among PSP recruits is limited. METHODS: RCMP cadets (n = 765, 72% male) completed self-report surveys assessing: sociodemographic information, social support, and sympto

Burnout, Reasons for Living and Dehumanisation among Italian Penitentiary Police Officers.

The literature on burnout syndrome among Penitentiary Police Officers (PPOs) is still rather scarce, and there are no analyses on the protective factors that can prevent these workers from the dangerous effect of burnout, with respect to the weakening of the reasons for living and de-humanization. This study aimed to examine the relationships between burnout, protective factors against weakening of the reasons for living and not desiring to die and the role of de-humanisation, utilising the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI); the Reasons for Living Inventory (RFL); the Testoni Death Representatio

Examining gambling-related crime reports in the National Finnish Police Register.

The aim of this study is to examine the connection between gambling and criminal activity in the National Finnish Police Register. First, a method was created that enabled the search for gambling-related police reports in the National Finnish Police Register. The method is based on finding gambling-related police reports by using gambling-related headwords. Second, all police reports from 2011 that included any mention of gambling were read through (n = 2,233). Suspected gambling-related of crimes (n = 737) were selected from these reports. Those suspected gambling-related crimes were then des

Determinants for acknowledgement of occupational related causes among Italian police officers.

The aim of this work was to evaluate associations between invalidating health problems and the main demographic and professional determinants among the employees of the Police Headquarter of the Province of Foggia (South Italy). Personal records of the employees on active service between November 2009 and May 2010 (N. 798 files) have been analysed. 241 personal service records reporting at least an acknowledged occupational related cause were examined. Low educational level increases the risk of occupational related causes (OR = 2.03; 95% Cl = 1.03-3.2; p < 0.002). Traumatisms (49.4%) and oste

Borderland Security: State Police Perspectives on Crime and Insecurity in Mexico.

The Northern states along the US-Mexico border face some of Mexico's most serious public security problems. Mexican federal, state, and municipal police struggle to create and sustain effective crime reduction strategies. This study identifies the challenges facing the state police officials that prevent the development of effective crime reduction strategies. Utilizing thematic analysis to examine interview data from police authorities in two northern border states, this study identifies five primary challenges: institutional, legal frameworks, collaboration, data issues, and community percep

Police field trial and exploratory laboratory optimization of the DNA-Buster.

DNA analysis is a powerful tool in crime scene investigations and has become increasingly sensitive in recent years. This is particularly relevant when dealing with touch DNA, a challenging type of evidence due to its invisible nature, and often limited quantity and quality. Conventional collection methods such as swabbing or taping can have certain limitations, including low recovery efficiency, handling with increased risk of contamination, and difficulties in sampling large surfaces or accessing small niches and corners. To address these challenges, the DNA-Buster was developed, a dry-vacuu

Patterns of police interactions with people experiencing homelessness and mental illness.

To guide the prevention of policing in persons experiencing homelessness and mental illness, we examined police interactions in this population by combining data from At Home/Chez Soi and Montreal police databases (N= 454). We explored the types, initiators, locations, and mental health/judicial outcomes of interactions over four years, identifying sub-groups using latent class analysis and then comparing sociodemographic and psychosocial variables between groups. Four groups emerged: few, mainly as a suspect, diverse, and frequent and diverse interactions. The characteristics of participants

The prevalence of mental illness and unmet needs of police custody detainees.

BACKGROUND: Internationally, there is evidence of high rates of mental disorders amongst police custody detainees but this literature is limited, and there has been little research into the unmet needs of police detainees in the UK, or elsewhere. Such research could support better focussed interventions for improving health and recidivism outcomes. AIM: To examine psychiatric and developmental morbidity amongst police detainees, and ascertain differences in need between morbidity categories. METHOD: We used a cross-sectional study design and interviewed a 40% sample of people entering police

Experiences with the Philadelphia police assisted diversion program: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The U.S. relies far too heavily on punitive criminal justice strategies to address problems that are better prevented and resolved through social and health services. The resulting harms are especially large and longstanding for people trapped in the failed War on Drugs. Philadelphia launched a Police Assisted Diversion (PAD) program to address the highest rates of poverty, incarceration, and fatal overdose among large cities in the U.S. PAD enables police officers to connect people with supportive services in many instances that would otherwise result in arrest or through outreach
