Cadmium, copper, and lead accumulation and bioconcentration in the vegetative and reproductive organs of Raphanus sativus: implications for plant performance and pollination.

Several studies have found high levels of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb) in honey bee hives located near urbanized or industrial areas. Insect herbivores and pollinators may come in contact with environmental contaminants in the leaves and flowers they forage upon in these areas. Our study quantified which of these metals are accumulated in the tissues of a common weedy plant that can serve as a route of exposure for insects. We grew Raphanus sativus (crop radish) in semi-hydroponic sand culture in the greenhouse. Plants were irrigated with nutrient solutions containing Cd, Cu, or Pb

Flower visitors of chili pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) in West Bengal and assessing yield enhancement by stingless bee (Tetragonula pagdeni Schwarz) pollination.

Amid growing concerns over the decline of pollinator populations, understanding the diversity of pollinators is essential for optimising crop yields. The wild pollinators of chili pepper (Capsicum frutescens) in West Bengal, India, have not yet been fully documented, and the potential of stingless bees as commercial pollinators remains insufficiently explored. This study aimed to identify the floral visitors of chili pepper and to assess the pollination efficiency of stingless bees (Tetragonula pagdeni). Bees (including honeybees, solitary bees, and stingless bees), butterflies, and wasps were

Novel brood-site pollination mutualism between sympetalous Heterosmilax (Smilacaceae, Liliales) and a cecidomyiid gall midge (Cecidomyiidae, Diptera) breeding in fallen male flowers.

Heterosmilax is a unique dioecious genus of Smilacaceae (Liliales, Monocotyledon) in that both male and female flowers are sympetalous, ellipsoid, and almost closed. Our field observations in the Ryukyu Islands of Japan showed that H.japonica flowers are visited and pollinated exclusively by females of one cecidomyiid gall midge species, whose larvae breed in fallen male flowers and feed initially on pollen and later on floral tissue. This is the first example of obligate gall midge-associated brood-site pollination mutualism in which the pollinator brood site is fallen male flowers. The polli

Pollinator Visitation Within a Single Crown of the Rare Rainforest Tree Firmiana daweishanensis Is Associated With Floral Colour Change.

Floral colour change can signal floral state, but its role in rainforest canopy trees remains poorly understood. We investigated colour change and pollinator visitation in Firmiana daweishanensis, a Plant Species with Extremely Small Populations endemic to southeastern Yunnan, China. Using a 25-m scaffold, we observed 16 flowering branches on one adult tree for 128 branch-hours. We combined these observations with measurements of linalool emission, nectar accumulation, reproductive function, calyx reflectance and bee visual modelling. Six hymenopteran taxa visited the tree, with Megachile bees

Threatened pollinator and plant species in megadiverse countries: what we have learned from a synthesis of interactions for Brazil.

Plant-pollinator interactions are essential for the reproduction of most flowering plants and the maintenance of biodiversity. With each new assessment of threat status, new plants and pollinators are included in the list of threatened species. However, the ecological interactions established by threatened plants and pollinators are largely unknown. To support conservation planning for threatened plants and pollinators, we surveyed interactions for the plant and pollinator species listed in the official threatened species lists for Brazil. We found data on plant-pollinator interactions for les

(Hyper)bioaccumulation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the flowers and pollen of wild plants: a potential pollinator exposure pathway.

Pollinator decline is a well-documented global trend that threatens the stability of both natural and agricultural systems, prompting further investigation into its causes. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are globally detected contaminants known to be toxic to animals, including pollinators, and accumulate in plant tissues from contaminated media. The partitioning of PFAS to flowers and pollen is a major gap in our understanding of the chemicals' fate in terrestrial systems. Thus, we conducted a preliminary survey examining the concentrations of PFAS in the soil, leaves, pollen, and

Innovative pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidine-based cinnamic acid derivatives against Sogatella furcifera with better biosafety to pollinators.

BACKGROUND: Sogatella furcifera, commonly known as white-backed planthopper, is a highly threatening migratory pest that feeds on rice and can transmit phytoviruses. Recently, mesoionic insecticides, exemplified by triflumezopyrim (TFM), have proven effective in managing such pests. Nevertheless, available data indicate that TFM remains highly toxic to ecologically important pollinators. Herein, the development of a class of pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidine-based cinnamic acid analogs, their insecticidal activity, modes of action, and toxicity to bees are disclosed. RESULTS: A total of 37 novel pyrido

Nesting Biology of Megachile (Chrysosarus) jenseni (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae) in Two Contrasting Pampean Agroecosystems: A Potential Pollinator for Alfalfa?

Several crops depend on both managed and wild bees to produce fruits and/or seeds, and the efficiency of numerous wild bees is higher than that of some managed species. Therefore, knowing and understanding the required resources for wild bees could enabled the establishment of management practices to increase their populations. Here, we provide information about the nesting biology of Megachile (Chrysosarus) jenseni, a Faboideae-specialist bee species. Based on observations from two populations occurring in contrasting agroecosystems, this bivoltine species showed common behavioral features sh

Integrative analysis of transcriptome and proteome revealed nectary and nectar traits in the plant-pollinator interaction of Nitraria tangutorum Bobrov.

BACKGROUND: Nitraria tangutorum is an important desert shrub that shows resistance to drought, salt and wind erosion stresses. It is a central ecological species in its area. Here, we have studied how N. tangutorum has adapted to achieve a successful reproduction strategy. RESULTS: We found that N. tangutorum is mainly pollinated by insects of the Hymenoptera, Diptera and Coleoptera orders. Nitraria tangutorum has very small flowers, with the nectary composed of secretive epidermal cells from which nectar is secreted, located within the inner petals. In addition, analyzing the transcriptome o

Flower-rich and diverse road verges support pollinators, but traffic speed limits the ecological benefits across Europe.

Roads are vital for human societies, yet they can also have negative impacts on the ecological communities that live in close proximity to them. Insect pollinators, which nest and forage in road verges running alongside roads, are a group of particular importance. These verges may act as an "ecological trap," drawing insect pollinators into contact with traffic, increasing the risk of pollinator-traffic collisions. Spanning six European regions, we evaluated the complex relationships between traffic, road verge floral composition, and surrounding land use to understand how these factors influe

Fertility Management in Pollinators: Queen Storage, Transport, and Reproductive Resilience in Apis mellifera Under Commercial and Environmental Stressors.

As the only reproductive female in the colony, the honey bee queen (Apis mellifera) is essential to colony survival, productivity, and the sustainability of pollination services that underpin food security and global agriculture. The biological, physiological, molecular, and commercial elements that affect queen fertility throughout the commercial lifecycle, from mating and development to sperm storage, banking, transportation, and colony establishment, are examined in this review. According to available data, successful queen reproduction depends on effective mating, long-term sperm viability

Immediate and delayed impact of heat stress on sperm quality in a key pollinator, the buff-tailed bumblebee (Bombus terrestris).

Bumblebee populations are declining at an alarming rate due to anthropic-driven global changes. Increasing temperatures and more frequent extreme heat events impose substantial physiological stress on organisms, reducing fitness and contributing to population declines and biodiversity loss. While the immediate impact of heat stress (HS) on bumblebee behaviour and physiology has been largely documented, the delayed effect on individual fertility remains more elusive. We quantified the effect of HS on the viability of sperm stored in the male accessory testes of buff-tailed bumblebees (Bombus te

Osmophore Structure and Labellum Micromorphology in Ophrys speculum (Orchidaceae): New Interpretations of Floral Features and Implications for a Specific Sexually Deceptive Pollination Interaction.

Pollination by sexual deception specifically attracts male insects, through the floral scent and particular morphological features of the flower that serve as visual and tactile stimuli. The unique bond between the Ophrys speculum orchid and the male Dasyscolia ciliata wasp primarily stems from a few distinctive semiochemicals that mimic the female wasp's sex pheromone, although the floral scent comprises a variety of compounds. An osmophore producing highly volatile compounds has been documented in four close relatives of O. speculum and is now being also investigated in this species. Given t

Pollinator probing preference and switching mode-mediated self-interference within a monoecious plant significantly reduced reproductive fitness.

INTRODUCTION: Monoecy is usually interpreted as an important evolutionary route of the plant sexual system from hermaphroditism to dioecy. This floral mechanism can effectively reduce self-interference during the reproductive process, and the services provided by pollinators may play an essential role in monoecious species; however, relevant research is still lacking. Thus, we aimed to determine whether monoecious plants could effectively avoid self-interference and promote the evolution of monoecy under the service of pollinators. METHODS: Here, we successfully performed manipulation experim

Cross-Pollinators and Boundary Spanners: Contributions of Ontario Health Team Fellows to Quality Improvement and Evaluation Capacity for Health Systems.

Despite knowledge mobilization efforts between academic researchers and health system decision-makers, the evidence-to-action gap persists. Given that the learning health system is a cycle of knowledge to action to knowledge, the implementation of embedded health service researchers within host health system organizations is a promising approach to bridge the evidence-to-action gap. The contributions of embedded researchers to quality improvement (QI) and evaluation research capacity for integrated health systems are promising areas that warrant investigation. This paper describes the roles an

Resolving the "Yucca queretaroensis problem": Phylogenomic analysis of Yucca reveals the identity of an enigmatic species and the origin of an obligate pollination mutualism.

PREMISE: The genus Yucca is a group of ~50 species of woody monocots endemic to the North American arid regions. Their obligate pollination mutualism with yucca moths is considered a "textbook example" of coevolution and is hypothesized to have promoted rapid diversification. However, testing this hypothesis has been difficult due to uncertainty about the placement of a rogue taxon, Yucca queretaroensis, a rare endemic of the Sierra Gorda region of central Mexico. Past work placed this species in different positions within the Agavoideae, producing starkly different age estimates for Yucca (25

Studies on the novel effects of electron beam treated pollen on colony reproductive output in commercially-reared bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) for mass pollination applications.

Commercially-reared bumblebees provide an important pollinator service that helps support food production and security. The deployment of an appropriate non-thermal disinfection technology for the bulk treatment of pollen collected from honeybees for the feeding of commercial bumblebees is important in order to mitigate against complex diseases and unwanted pathogen spillover to native bees. High level disinfection of pollen was achieved using an electron (e)-beam dose of 100 kGy that corresponded to 78 % loss of cellular viability of bee pathogens before feeding to bumblebees as measured by t

Site-specific variation in flowering phenology of a spring ephemeral plant and its implications for phenological mismatch with pollinators under climate change.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Disruption of plant-pollinator interactions occurs when interacting species exhibit different phenological responses to climate change. Flowering of Corydalis ambigua, a spring ephemeral herb growing in deciduous forests, is highly dependent on snowmelt time, while its main pollinators, bumblebee queens, emerge from overwintering after a certain degree of soil warming. In springs with early snowmelt, flowering often occurs earlier than bumblebee emergence, resulting in greater pollen limitation and reduced seed production, suggesting that phenological mismatch affects plan

Optimal pollen stickiness to pollinators for maximizing paternal fitness: Increased number of recipient flowers or increased pollen deposition on recipient flowers?

A plant can sire more seeds by increasing the number of pollen recipient flowers or the amount of pollen deposited on recipient flowers. We theoretically analyzed how pollen stickiness contributes to paternal fitness through changing the pattern of pollen dispersal including both the number of recipient flowers and overall pollen deposition (the overall amount of pollen deposited on recipient flowers) in animal-pollinated plants. We developed a numerical model in which pollen stickiness to pollinators increases with production of expensive materials on pollen surfaces, and a high level of stic

Effects of flowering plant's patch size on species composition of pollinator communities, foraging strategies, and resource partitioning in bumblebees (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

In 4 common Middle-European mainly bumblebee-pollinated plant species (Impatiens glandulifera, Echium vulgare, Aconitum napellus, Symphytum officinale) the influence of patch size on species composition of the pollinator community was studied. Short-tongued species were most dominant in large patches, while small patches were frequented by middle- and long-tongued bumblebees. This phenomenon was extremely obvious in Symphytum officinale and Aconitum napellus, where short-tongued species had bitten a hole in nearly every flower of large patches. Long-tongued species were forced to small patches
