When Bulk Matters: Disentanglement of the Role of Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Complexes at Surfaces and in the Bulk of Foam Films.

Foam films display exciting systems as on one hand they dictate the performance of macroscopic foams and on the other hand they allow studies of surface forces. With regard to surface forces, we attempt to disentangle the effect of the foam film surfaces and the foam film bulk. For that, we study the influence of salt (LiBr) on foam films formed by mixtures of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte and surfactant: anionic monosulfonated polyphenylene sulfone (sPSO2-220) and cationic tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C14TAB). Adding a small amount of salt (≤10-3 M) decreases the foam film stabil

Multilayer Films Based on Chitosan/Pectin Polyelectrolyte Complexes as Novel Platforms for Buccal Administration of Clotrimazole.

Buccal films are recognized as easily applicable, microbiologically stable drug dosage forms with good retentivity at the mucosa intended for the therapy of oromucosal conditions, especially infectious diseases. Multilayer films composed of layers of oppositely charged polymers separated by ionically interacting polymeric chains creating polyelectrolyte complexes represent very interesting and relatively poorly explored area. We aimed to develop the antifungal multilayer systems composed of cationic chitosan and anionic pectin as potential platforms for controlled delivery of clotrimazole. The

Odd-even effects on hydration of natural polyelectrolyte multilayers: An in situ synchrotron FTIR microspectroscopy study.

HYPOTHESIS: Odd-even effects in polysaccharide polyelectrolyte multilayers influence their hydration content and the chemical environment of the water within them. EXPERIMENTS: Polysaccharide polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) composed of pharmaceutical grade fucoidan and chitosan were studied under confinement using synchrotron FTIR microspectroscopy at increasing pressure, in order to isolate and measure infrared spectra of water within the PEM, without interference from bulk water. Complementary studies of the PEMs were carried out using lab-based in situ attenuated total reflectance Fouri

Self-assembly pH-sensitive chitosan/alginate coated polyelectrolyte complexes for oral delivery of insulin.

Polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC) provide new opportunities for controlled release system of drugs, and have potentials to address challenges on the way to effective oral insulin delivery. Here, an innovative pH-sensitive PEC for insulin oral administration was developed, which was formed by self-assembly of two oppositely charged nanoparticles (chitosan-coated nanoparticles and alginate-coated nanoparticles) through electrostatic interaction via optimised double emulsion method. The encapsulation efficiency of insulin-loaded alginate-coated and chitosan-coated nanoparticles were 81.5 ± 7.4% and

Using a Graphene-Polyelectrolyte Complex Reducing Agent To Promote Cracking in Single-Crystalline Gold Nanoplates.

It is a challenge to produce single-crystalline gold nanoparticles having regular size definition designed for controlled light absorbance and internal structural inhomogeneities to enhance electro-magnetic fields. Here, we report a synthetic strategy to generate large single-crystalline triangular or hexagonal gold nanoplates with multiple cracks within the plates using a graphene-polyelectrolyte complex as both a surface adsorbent and bulk reducing agent. Large-scale gold nanoplates can be synthesized within 48 h. First-principles calculations indicate that the nanoplates have a kinetically

Self-assembled polyelectrolyte complexes films as efficient compression coating layers for controlled-releasing tablets.

Currently, polysaccharide-based hydrogels are widely studied macromolecular networks to modify drug dissolution from controlled-releasing matrix tablets. Among them, polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC) films consisted of chitosan (CS) and sodium alginate (SA) could be obtained via spontaneously assembling under physiological gastrointestinal environment. Here, we utilized these self-assembled PEC films as an efficient coating materials to develop controlled-released matrix tablets through compression coating process, with paracetamol (APAP) as model drug. The constitutive and morphology characteri

The Experimental Study of the Performance of Nano-Thin Polyelectrolyte Shell for Dental Pulp Stem Cells Immobilization.

Carious is the most frequent disease of mineralized dental tissues which might result in dental pulp inflammation and mortality. In such cases an endodontic treatment is the only option to prolong tooth functioning in the oral cavity; however, in the cases of severe pulpitis, especially when complicated with periodontal tissue inflammation, the endodontic treatment might not be enough to protect against tooth loss. Thus, keeping the dental pulp viable and/or possibility of the reconstruction of a viable dental pulp complex, appears to become a critical factor for carious and/or pulp inflammati

Cationic polyelectrolyte-mediated delivery of antisense morpholino oligonucleotides for exon-skipping in vitro and in mdx mice.

In this study, we investigated a series of cationic polyelectrolytes (PEs) with different size and composition for their potential to improve delivery of an antisense phosphorodiamidate morpholino oligomer (PMO) both in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that the poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDAC) polymer series, especially PE-3 and PE-4, improves the delivery efficiency of PMO, comparable with Endoporter-mediated PMO delivery in vitro. The enhanced PMO delivery and targeting to dystrophin exon 23 was further observed in mdx mice, up to fourfold with the PE-4, compared with PMO

A novel pulsed drug-delivery system: polyelectrolyte layer-by-layer coating of chitosan-alginate microgels.

PURPOSE: The aim of this report was to introduce a novel "core-membrane" microgel drug-delivery device for spontaneously pulsed release without any external trigger. METHODS: The microgel core was prepared with alginate and chitosan. The semipermeable membrane outside the microgel was made of polyelectrolytes including polycation poly(allylamine hydrochloride) and sodium polystyrene sulfonate. The drug release of this novel system was governed by the swelling pressure of the core and the rupture of the outer membrane. RESULTS: The size of the core-membrane microgel drug-delivery device was 4

Biomimetic hydration lubrication with various polyelectrolyte layers on cross-linked polyethylene orthopedic bearing materials.

Natural joints rely on fluid thin-film lubrication by the hydrated polyelectrolyte layer of cartilage. However, current artificial joints with polyethylene (PE) surfaces have considerably less efficient lubrication and thus much greater wear, leading to osteolysis and aseptic loosening. This is considered a common factor limiting prosthetic longevity in total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, such wear could be mitigated by surface modification to mimic the role of cartilage. Here we report the development of nanometer-scale hydrophilic layers with varying charge (nonionic, cationic, anionic, o

Selective permeation of hydrogen peroxide through polyelectrolyte multilayer films and its use for amperometric biosensors.

A platinum electrode was coated with polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) films to prepare an amperometric hydrogen peroxide sensor which can be used in the presence of possible interferences such as ascorbic acid, uric acid, and acetaminophen. The PEM films were prepared on the surface of a Pt disk electrode by an alternate deposition of polycation and polyanion from the aqueous solutions through electrostatic force of attraction. The Pt electrodes coated with a poly(allylamine)/poly(vinyl sulfate) or poly(allylamine)/poly(styrenesulfonate) film were used successfully for detecting H2O2 selective

ROS-responsive chitosan/hyaluronan polyelectrolyte nanogels for targeted chemo-ferroptosis therapy against breast cancer.

Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death driven by lipid peroxidation, has emerged as a promising strategy for combination with chemotherapy in cancer treatment. However, the rational design of delivery systems capable of simultaneously inducing ferroptosis, enhancing chemotherapy efficacy, and reducing systemic toxicity remains a substantial challenge. Herein, we developed a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive, ionically crosslinked chitosan/hyaluronan polyelectrolyte nanogel for targeted chemo-ferroptosis combination therapy. In this system, hyaluronic acid (HA) was f

A highly sensitive and drift-free iontronic sensor enabled by a polarity-balanced polyelectrolyte for surgical force sensing.

Iontronic pressure sensors featuring high sensitivity are promising across different emerging fields. In applications requiring high-fidelity sensing such as surgeries, reliable pressure monitoring necessitates sensitivity and stability at the same time to ensure safety. However, existing iontronic sensors often face a trade-off between them-soft ionic materials with high conductivity often present pronounced viscoelasticity, resulting in a low sensitivity-to-drift-rate (S/D) ratio. Here, we report a polyelectrolyte-based iontronic pressure sensor that achieves a nearly one order-of-magnitude

Bio-inspired polyphenol-polyelectrolyte WRAP system for geometrically controlled AAV delivery in diverse anatomical sites.

Systemic delivery of therapeutics frequently requires elevated dosing to achieve effective local concentrations, often resulting in unintended toxicity and insufficient drug levels at the target site. To address this inherent limitation, localized drug and gene delivery strategies have been developed to deposit therapeutic payloads directly within diseased microenvironments. Herein, we report the development of a WRAP (Writable, Retentive, Adhesive, Permeable) drug delivery scaffold system, a biomaterial-mediated polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) film formed through spontaneous ionic complexation

Oral administration of polyelectrolyte modified curcumin-loaded egg protein nanoparticles for suppression of inflammation in colitis mice.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the large intestine, resulting in inflammation to the mucosa and submucosa of the colon. Overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays an important role in contributing to the exacerbation of inflammation and strategies aimed at reducing ROS in the inflamed colon offer potential therapeutic benefits for managing UC. Curcumin possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects; however, it faces many challenges, such as rapid metabolism and low solubility. In this study, we developed a curcumin-loaded egg protein nanopa

Large-scale super-resolution optoacoustic imaging facilitated by FeNP/ICG-loaded coreless polyelectrolyte microcapsules.

Rationale: Localization optoacoustic tomography (LOT) enhances imaging of deep-tissue microvasculature by leveraging flowing contrast particles. However, achieving high-resolution, large-scale imaging requires contrast agents with strong per-particle signal, good biocompatibility, and prolonged circulation time. This study introduces coreless polyelectrolyte microcapsules (MCs) encapsulating indocyanine green (ICG) and iron oxide nanoparticles (FeNP) to overcome current limitations in LOT imaging. Methods: MCs were engineered using a layer-by-layer technique by depositing polyelectrolytes, FeN

Three-dimensional conductive conjugated polyelectrolyte gels facilitate interfacial electron transfer for improved biophotovoltaic performance.

Living biophotovoltaics represent a potentially green and sustainable method to generate bio-electricity by harnessing photosynthetic microorganisms. However, barriers to electron transfer across the abiotic/biotic interface hinder solar-to-electricity conversion efficiencies. Herein, we report on a facile method to improve interfacial electron transfer by combining the photosynthetic cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 (S. elongatus) with a conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE) atop indium tin oxide (ITO) charge-collecting electrodes. By self-assembly of the CPE with S. elongatus, soft

Polyelectrolyte-coated liposomes microfluidically assembled in one-step for enhancing cell endocytosis and in-vivo immune responses.

To enhance the cellular uptake of liposomes, we prepared conventional liposomes with targeting molecules and surface-charged liposomes and evaluated their potential as nano-carriers and vaccine adjuvants by comparing their endocytosis efficiencies using immune cells. Surface-charged liposomes were synthesized via a one-step microfluidic method, which provided a novel, simple, fast, and highly reproducible method for preparing liposomes. Flow cytometry revealed that cationic polyelectrolyte-coated liposomes exhibited higher endocytosis efficiencies (of up to a factor of 100) in A774A.1 cells an
