The epidemiology and control of open angle glaucoma: a population-based perspective.

Chronic open angle glaucoma is an etiologically heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by damage to the optic nerve, resulting in peripheral visual loss that can progress to involve the fovea and central vision. Open angle glaucoma can be divided into primary conditions and conditions which are secondary to another ocular or systemic disease. Causes of secondary glaucoma include uveitis, cataract, trauma, and disorders affecting the development structure of the angle. This review focuses on primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), since it accounts for the vast majority of the disease burden

A case control study of senile cataract in a hospital based population.

A case-control study (244 cases and 264 controls) was done during 1986-89 on a hospital based population to evaluate the risk factors associated with the etiology of senile cataract. Patient with age between 40-60 years, visual acuity of 6/9 or less, and presence of lenticular opacity of senile origin were included as cases. Age matched individuals with absence of lenticular opacity made up the controls. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that higher systolic BP and number of meals were significantly (P < or = 0.05) associated with presence of senile cataract; whereas higher we

A population-based case-control study of risk factors for breech presentation.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated relationships between breech presentation and infant, maternal, and pregnancy characteristics of singleton births. STUDY DESIGN: A population-based case-control study (3588 breech cases, 8183 controls) was conducted with data from the 1987 to 1988 Washington State birth certificate. RESULTS: Low birth weight, short gestational age, primiparity, and older maternal age were associated with increased risk of breech birth, and after we controlled for these factors, the following were also associated with breech birth: hydrocephalus, established maternal diabetes, congenit

Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor associated cough: a population-based case-control study.

The objectives of this study were to determine the risk for coughing as an adverse reaction to angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors under everyday circumstances in a large population and to study whether this adverse effect is more common in women. A population-based case-control study was used. The study was set in the practices of 161 Dutch general practitioners (GPs), in which all consultations, morbidity, mortality, medical interventions and prescriptions were registered during 4 consecutive 3-month periods in 4 consecutive groups of 40-41 GPs. The subjects were 2436 patients wit

Occurrence of mesangial IgA and IgM deposits in a control necropsy population.

Kidney sections were obtained from 200 consecutive control necropsies of patients who died of traumatic injuries, with no clinical history of renal disease or other organic disease discovered at necropsy. Mesangial IgA as the predominant immunoglobulin was found in 8/200 (4%) cases, with accompanying IgM in two of them; and IgM alone in two (1%) subjects. Deposits of C3 alone in blood vessels was observed in nine (4.5%) cases. The glomerular morphology was essentially normal or minor change only, with one case showing diffuse mesangial hypercellularity. The high incidence of mesangial IgA depo

Size and demography pattern of the domestic dog population in Bhutan: Implications for dog population management and disease control.

Understanding the demography of domestic dogs is essential to plan the dog population management and rabies control program. In this study, we estimated the owned and stray dog population and the proportion of owned dogs that are free-roaming in Bhutan. For this, a cross-sectional household surveys were conducted in six districts (both urban and rural areas) and two border towns in southern Bhutan. The population estimation was done by extrapolation of the mean number of dogs per household and dogs per person, whilst mark-resight survey was conducted to estimate the proportion of owned dogs th

Increased Risk of Osteoporosis in Gastric Cancer Survivors Compared to General Population Control: A Study with Representative Korean Population.

PURPOSE: Although several studies have suggested that osteoporosis is common in survivors of gastric cancer (GC), no study to date has directly assessed the risk for osteoporosis in GC survivors compared to matched controls. Thus, we aimed to investigate the relative risk for osteoporosis in survivors of GC compared to general population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data (2008-2011). Patients with a history of GC (n=94) were defined as case among 8,142 individuals over 50 years old who were evaluated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiom

Free-roaming dog population estimation and status of the dog population management and rabies control program in Dhaka City, Bangladesh.

Beginning January 2012, a humane method of dog population management using a Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Release (CNVR) program was implemented in Dhaka City, Bangladesh as part of the national rabies control program. To enable this program, the size and distribution of the free-roaming dog population needed to be estimated. We present the results of a dog population survey and a pilot assessment of the CNVR program coverage in Dhaka City. Free-roaming dog population surveys were undertaken in 18 wards of Dhaka City on consecutive days using mark-resight methods. Data was analyzed using Lincoln-Pet

Prevalence and determinants of controlled hypertension in a German population cohort.

BACKGROUND: Data of the German population-based cohort SHIP (Study of Health in Pomerania) were analysed to examine treatment rates, antihypertensive substances prescribed, and the proportion of hypertensive study participants reaching target values for blood pressure as well as determinants. METHODS: The study population was defined using baseline data of the cohort (collected between 1997 and 2001). Participants with blood pressure values ≥140/90 mmHg and/or antihypertensive medication with known hypertension and participants with risk-comorbidity (diabetes, stroke, angina pectoris, and/or

Top-down control of visual cortex in migraine populations.

The pathophysiology of migraine includes a heightened excitability of visual cortex that persists between headache events and that has been linked to impaired inhibitory intracortical processes. Here we examined the hypothesis that this cortical pathophysiology would affect the top-down attentional control of visual cortex. We asked two groups of participants-migraineurs (N=29) and non-migraine controls (N=29)-to perform a probabilistic spatial orienting task as we measured visual sensory cortical responses via event-related potentials (ERPs). Data were then analyzed as a function of whether t

Controlling animal populations using anti-fertility vaccines.

The goal for fertility control of animal populations is the development of a safe, economical and effective contraceptive. One offshoot of the development of this technology is the acquisition of multiple therapeutic strategies for diseases, such as immunotherapy probes for cancer. In the long run, successful population control requires multifactorial strategies. One component of population control is immunocontraception. Development of effective antigens for immunocontraceptive vaccines has been remarkable and has greatly advanced our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of fertilization

Iron supplementation for the control of iron deficiency in populations at risk.

Iron supplementation, mostly with a therapeutic orientation, has been a key strategy for the short-term control of iron deficiency and ferropenic anemia. It has been used almost exclusively in antenatal clinics, but in spite of its confirmed efficacy in supervised trials, it has proven ineffective in practice in most developing countries. Poor effectiveness has been attributed to various factors including insufficient dose and time of supplementation and poor adherence. These problems have led to the administration of high iron doses, which have proven equally ineffective in practice. This pap

Surveillance and control of meningococcal meningitis epidemics in refugee populations.

Epidemics of communicable diseases pose a direct threat to refugee and internally displaced populations, and could lead to high mortality rates and a disruption of basic health care services. Several large refugee populations live in regions of high meningococcal disease endemicity and their camps are at risk for outbreaks of meningococcal meningitis. Surveillance in these camps allows early detection and control of impending outbreaks. Confirmation of meningococcal disease can be performed under field conditions using simple techniques, such as latex agglutination. Isolates should be obtained

Mechanisms controlling virulence thresholds of mixed viral populations.

The propensity of RNA viruses to revert attenuating mutations contributes to disease and complicates vaccine development. Despite the presence of virulent revertant viruses in some live-attenuated vaccines, disease from vaccination is rare. This suggests that in mixed viral populations, attenuated viruses may limit the pathogenesis of virulent viruses, thus establishing a virulence threshold. Here we examined virulence thresholds using mixtures of virulent and attenuated viruses in a transgenic mouse model of poliovirus infection. We determined that a 1,000-fold excess of the attenuated Sabin

Control of Mycobacterium bovis infections and the risk to human populations.

Conventional control methods based on test-and-slaughter policies have, in several countries, led to the successful eradication of bovine tuberculosis in cattle. However, new approaches for control of bovine tuberculosis are required in developing countries and those with a wildlife reservoir of infection. Recent developments include improved diagnostics and evaluation of new vaccination strategies.

Benchmarking infrastructure for cancer control in Commonwealth countries: a population-based observational study.

BACKGROUND: Health systems in the Commonwealth perform suboptimally in relation to cancer control. We applied a proprietary health system analysis framework to benchmark cancer control infrastructure and explore the implications for health systems to enhance the cancer response. METHODS: In this multinational, population-based observational study across all 56 Commonwealth countries, we analysed data across five health system infrastructure elements: imaging diagnostics (mammography), imaging diagnostics (CT), treatment (radiation oncology), treatment (surgery), and health-care providers (hos

Early-Life Exposures and Odds of Adenomyosis: A Population-Based Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Adenomyosis can confer life-altering symptoms such as pelvic pain. Yet, the epidemiologic study of this uterine condition lags other gynaecologic conditions. This includes the investigation of intrauterine exposures that could disrupt foetal development and contribute to the presence of adenomyosis in adulthood. OBJECTIVE: We investigated nine early-life factors and the odds of adenomyosis using data from a population-based case-control study of enrollees of an integrated healthcare system in Washington State ages 18-59. METHODS: Cases (n = 386) had incident, pathology-confirmed
