Maternal risk factors for low birth weight and intrauterine growth retardation in a Guatemalan population.

Hospital data on 306 mother-infant pairs in Cobán, Guatemala, were studied to assess factors responsible for low infant birth weights involving the two general kinds of intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), these being Type I (symmetric stunting) and Type II (asymmetric stunting or wasting). The results indicate that the Type I IUGR observed arose primarily from long-term poverty, malnutrition, and chronic poor living conditions, while much of the Type II IUGR seemed attributable to maternal disorders affected by short interbirth intervals.

Higher growth temperatures compound heatwave recovery of photosynthesis in different populations of Corymbia calophylla.

Global temperature rise is leading to increased stress and mortality in forests globally and is driving more frequent and intense heatwaves; however, the interaction between growth temperatures and heatwave events on tree populations remains poorly understood. We aimed to determine if gas exchange performance during and after heatwaves was determined by growth temperature, climate origin, and heatwave intensity in Corymbia calophylla saplings from four contrasting temperature-rainfall climate regions. Saplings were grown under warm and cool growth temperatures and exposed to a moderate or extr

Growth and development of children under 5 years of age with tetralogy of Fallot in a Chinese population.

Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs) are associated with different patterns of malnutrition and growth retardation, which may vary worldwide and need to be evaluated according to local conditions. Although tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is one of the first described CHDs, the etiology outcomes in growth and development of TOF in early age child is still unclear in most cases. This study was designed to investigate the growth retardation status of Chinese pediatric TOF patients under 5 years old. The body height, body weight and body mass index (BMI) of 262 pediatric patients (138 boys and 124 girls) who

Aneurysm Size is the Strongest Risk Factor for Intracranial Aneurysm Growth in the Eastern Finnish Population.

BACKGROUND: Saccular intracranial aneurysm (sIA) growth during follow-up is associated with high risk for subsequent rupture. Finnish patients have been suggested to have higher risk for subarachnoid hemorrhage, but follow-up studies of sIA growth in the Finnish population are scarce. OBJECTIVE: To identify the strongest risk factors for sIA growth in Eastern Finnish population by studying 205 patients with 350 unruptured sIAs with angiographic follow-up imaging. METHODS: In this population-based cohort study, we included unruptured sIA patients from the Kuopio University Hospital Intracrani

The spatial profiles and metabolic capabilities of microbial populations impact the growth of antibiotic-resistant mutants.

Antibiotic resistance adversely affects clinical and public health on a global scale. Using the opportunistic human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, we show that increasing the number density of bacteria, on agar containing aminoglycoside antibiotics, can non-monotonically impact the survival of antibiotic-resistant mutants. Notably, at high cell densities, mutant survival is inhibited. A wide range of bacterial species can inhibit antibiotic-resistant mutants. Inhibition results from the metabolic breakdown of amino acids, which results in alkaline by-products. The consequent increase in pH a

In vitro and in vivo growth alter the population dynamic and properties of a Jeryl Lynn mumps vaccine.

Mumps vaccines are live attenuated viruses. They are known to vary in effectiveness, degree of attenuation and adverse event profile. However, the underlying reasons are poorly understood. We studied two closely related mumps vaccines which originate from the same attenuated Jeryl Lynn-5 strain but have different efficacies. Jeryl Lynn-Canine Kidney (JL-CK), produced on primary canine kidney cells, is less effective than RIT4385, which is produced on chicken embryo fibroblasts. JL-CK and RIT4385 could be distinguished by a number of in vitro and in vivo properties. JL-CK produced heterogeneous

Selected culturable enteric bacterial populations are modified by diet acidification and the growth promotant Tylosin.

AIMS: To determine the effect of diet acidification and an in-feed antibiotic growth promotant (Tylosin, Ty) on selected culturable bacterial populations in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of mice. METHODS AND RESULTS: Female C57Bl mice were given a standard diet supplemented with Acid Pak (AP) or Ty in the drinking water. After 21 days, lumen and adherent populations of Enterobacteriaceae, enterococci/streptococci, and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from the ileum, caecum, colon and faeces were enumerated. General intestinal health was assessed by the frequency of haemolytic bacteria in the dif

Association of in utero organophosphate pesticide exposure and fetal growth and length of gestation in an agricultural population.

Although pesticide use is widespread, little is known about potential adverse health effects of in utero exposure. We investigated the effects of organophosphate pesticide exposure during pregnancy on fetal growth and gestational duration in a cohort of low-income, Latina women living in an agricultural community in the Salinas Valley, California. We measured nonspecific metabolites of organophosphate pesticides (dimethyl and diethyl phosphates) and metabolites specific to malathion (malathion dicarboxylic acid), chlorpyrifos [O,O-diethyl O-(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl) phosphoro-thioate], and

Prevalence and incidence of intracranial haemorrhage in a population of children with haemophilia. The Hemophilia Growth and Development Study.

The prevalence of intracranial haemorrhage (ICH) in our population of haemophiliacs was 12%. The incidence of ICH was approximately 2% per year. At entry, 7% (21/309) had clinical histories of ICH without MRI evidence of old haemorrhage, indicating that either the haemorrhages had completely resolved, that routine MRI sequences are not particularly sensitive for the detection of old blood products, or a combination of both of these factors. One half (4/8) of the ICHs documented by entry MRI were clinically silent, and three of the 11 incident cases documented by MRI were clinically silent. HIV

Growth dynamics of pancreatic islet cell populations during fetal and neonatal development of the rat.

Rats from 18 days fetal to 28 days neonatal ages were studied for the total population sizes and cell proliferation activities of insulin secreting B cells, glucagon secreting A cells, somatostatin secreting D cells, and pancreatic polypeptide secreting PP cells. Cell population sizes were assessed by morphometric quantitation of immunohistochemically stained cells by a linear scanning method and cell proliferation activities were estimated by [3H]-thymidine labeling indices of these cell populations. There was a continuous increase in population sizes for all 4 islet cell types, with the fast

Relative tibia long bone growth in the Libben and Bt-5 prehistoric skeletal populations.

Patterns of tibia long bone growth were examined for the Libben Late Woodland and Bt-5 Late Archaic hunter-gatherer skeletal groups. Subadults included in the analyses ranged in age from birth to 10 years. The primary goals were to identify potential differences in relative tibia growth and evaluate the extent to which such differences were concordant with demographic and epidemiological characteristics of the two groups. Methods used were designed to minimize the shortcomings of unknown age and sex of the skeleton, small sample sizes, and population differences in adult size attained. Results

Growth of populations of lice, Damalinia ovis, on sheep and their effects on production and processing performance of wool.

Merino sheep were artificially infested with lice, Damalinia ovis, and the quantity and processing performance of the wool they subsequently produced was compared with those of wool from uninfested sheep. The experiment was conducted in a winter rainfall region of Western Australia, and was repeated yearly for three years. Louse infestation depressed clean wool production by 0.3-0.8 kg per sheep but did not affect live weight. This represented loss of income to the farmer of about $A0.72 to $A1.92 for each louse-infested sheep. The wool from lice-infested sheep, when processed into tops, yield

Growth Differentiation Factor 15 as a Biomarker of Cardiovascular Burden and Mortality in a Population-Based Cohort.

Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) is a stress-responsive cytokine strongly associated with aging, multimorbidity, and cardiovascular disease. Although prior studies have established its prognostic value in high-risk populations, its role in the general population remains less defined. The aim of this study was to determine if there is an association between plasma GDF15 levels, heart disease and mortality in a representative population-based cohort. We analyzed 1532 participants (mean age 55 years; 54.6% women) with available baseline plasma GDF15 concentrations. Participants were strat

Effect of chorioamnionitis on postnatal growth in very preterm infants: a population-based study in Japan.

PURPOSE: There is growing evidence that preterm infants born to mothers with chorioamnionitis (CAM) have increased risk of various neonatal morbidities and long-term neurological disorders; however, the effect of CAM on postnatal growth remains insufficiently investigated. This study evaluated the effect of histological CAM on postnatal growth trajectories in very preterm infants using a nationwide neonatal database in Japan. METHOD: A multicenter retrospective study was conducted using clinical data of 4220 preterm neonates who weighed ≤ 1500 g and were born at < 32 weeks of gestation betwee

The Rising Popularity of Growth Hormone Therapy and Ensuing Orthopedic Complications in the Pediatric Population: A Review.

The utilization of recombinant human growth hormone therapy in pediatric populations, originally approved to treat diseases of growth hormone deficiency, has expanded to encompass a broader range of indications, leading to a threefold increase in its utilization in the last two decades. However, concerns regarding its safety, particularly those that are orthopedic in nature, have grown alongside its increasing popularity. Growth hormone usage has been reported to predispose patients to a multitude of common orthopedic conditions, including carpal tunnel syndrome, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, li
