The value of seroprevalence data as surveillance tool for Lyme borreliosis in the general population: the experience of Belgium.

BACKGROUND: Serological surveillance, based on the measurement of the presence of specific antibodies in a given population, can be used in addition to traditional and routine disease surveillance methods. The added value of this has been largely documented for vaccine-preventable diseases, but to a lesser extent for vector-borne diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the utility of seroprevalence data as additional source of information on the epidemiology of Lyme borreliosis in Belgium. METHODS: In total, 3215 residual blood samples collected in 2013-2015 were analysed with Liaison® Borreli

Predicting spatial spread of rabies in skunk populations using surveillance data reported by the public.

BACKGROUND: Prevention and control of wildlife disease invasions relies on the ability to predict spatio-temporal dynamics and understand the role of factors driving spread rates, such as seasonality and transmission distance. Passive disease surveillance (i.e., case reports by public) is a common method of monitoring emergence of wildlife diseases, but can be challenging to interpret due to spatial biases and limitations in data quantity and quality. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We obtained passive rabies surveillance data from dead striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) in an epizootic in no

Clinical outcomes of endoscopic surveillance for gastric ulcers in populations with a high prevalence of gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although surveillance endoscopy is recommended after the treatment of a benign gastric ulcer in Korea, improved survival, secondary to an endoscopic follow-up strategy, is controversial. Thus, the aim of this study was to understand the results of gastric ulcer surveillance endoscopy and to individualize surveillance endoscopy by analyzing known risk factors for gastric cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 599 (M:F=424:175, median age=55.4 years) patients who were diagnosed with a gastric ulcer and who underwent follow-up endoscopy between January 2003 and August 2014 wer

Epidemiology of zoonotic hepatitis E: a community-based surveillance study in a rural population in China.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E is caused by two viral genotype groups: human types and zoonotic types. Current understanding of the epidemiology of the zoonotic hepatitis E disease is founded largely on hospital-based studies. METHODS: The epidemiology of hepatitis E was investigated in a community-based surveillance study conducted over one year in a rural city in eastern China with a registered population of 400,162. RESULTS: The seroprevalence of hepatitis E in the cohort was 38%. The incidence of hepatitis E was 2.8/10,000 person-years. Totally 93.5% of the infections were attributed to genotyp

Health surveillance in the population living in a methyl mercury-polluted area over a long period.

It is important to follow up on the health status of inhabitants living in the methyl mercury-polluted area surrounding Minamata City, paying particular attention to diseases not only of the central nervous system but also of other organs. We have been carrying out such concentric studies for more than 10 years. We have previously studied the cause-specific standard mortality ratios in Minamata disease patients and reported that the SMRs for liver disease and renal disease were significantly raised in male and female patients, respectively. It was also found that complications arising from dia

Carbon disulfide and the central nervous system: a 15-year neurobehavioral surveillance of an exposed population.

Carbon disulfide-induced neurobehavioral effects are well known and do not need further evidence. Carbon disulfide vasculopathy and the syndromic complex resulting in depression, loss of memory and concentration, and behavior disturbances have been widely demonstrated. Less known is the evolution of the symptomatology when the environmental conditions are consistently improved, that is, the reversibility or the progression of the dysfunctions observed. This paper reports on a neurobehavioral follow-up in a viscose rayon factory carried out, in intervals, from 1974 to 1990. Several successive i

Alert-associated cardiovascular events in Gulf civilian populations: emerging risks and surveillance opportunities.

Conflict and disaster settings are increasingly recognized as triggers for acute cardiovascular events; however, little attention has been given to civilian populations exposed to intermittent conflict alerts in non-war environments. This Perspective highlights the potential for alert-associated cardiovascular events, including overt myocardial infarction and subclinical myocardial injury, in Gulf host populations with high baseline cardiometabolic risk. Drawing on evidence from conflict and disaster literature, we propose that acute stress responses triggered by missile alerts or security war

A simulation-based approach to strengthen chronic wasting disease surveillance in captive cervid populations.

Captive cervid facilities are at elevated risk for chronic wasting disease (CWD) due to high deer densities, close animal contact, environmental contamination, and frequent movement of deer between facilities and across regions. Once CWD becomes established, it spreads quickly and is nearly impossible to eliminate, making early detection critical. However, surveillance in captive herds is challenging: testing only a small portion of the herd during the early stages of CWD outbreak provides a low likelihood of detecting infected deer. Moreover, not detecting CWD in a small sample cannot be inte

Bovine mortality: the utility of two data sources for the provision of population-level surveillance intelligence.

INTRODUCTION: The use of existing data to provide surveillance intelligence is widely advocated but often presents considerable challenges. Two data sources could be used as proxies for the mortality experienced by the Scottish cattle population: deaths recorded in the mandatory register [Cattle Tracing System (CTS)] and fallen stock collections by the National Fallen Stock Company (NSFCo) with a nationwide voluntary membership. METHODS: Data for the period 2011-2016 were described and compared to establish their strengths and limitations. Similarities and differences in their temporal, seaso

Evaluation of wastewater surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 in a prison population: a mixed-methods approach.

BACKGROUND: Prisons are high-risk settings for the transmission of communicable disease. Robust surveillance systems are required to identify and control outbreaks. Wastewater surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 was introduced in four prisons in Wales in March 2022. We investigated its contribution to the COVID-19 surveillance programme. METHODS: We evaluated prison wastewater surveillance against eight system attributes using a mixed-methods approach. Semi-structured interviews were completed with key stakeholders to assess usefulness, flexibility and acceptability. Quantitative analyses were comple

Antimicrobial resistance in uropathogens and appropriateness of empirical treatment: a population-based surveillance study in Indonesia.

OBJECTIVES: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common reason for empirical treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics worldwide. However, population-based antimicrobial resistance (AMR) prevalence data to inform empirical treatment choice are lacking in many regions, because of limited surveillance capacity. We aimed to assess the prevalence of AMR to commonly used antimicrobial drugs in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from patients with community- or healthcare-associated UTIs on two islands of Indonesia. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional patient-based study in pu

Surveillance and correlation of antimicrobial usage and resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa: a hospital population-based study.

This retrospective study evaluated trends and association between resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from patients with hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and hospital antimicrobial usage from 2003 through 2011 in a tertiary care hospital in northeast China. HAI was defined as occurrence of infection after hospital admission, without evidence that infection was present or incubating (≦48 h) on admission. In vitro susceptibilities were determined by disk diffusion test and susceptibility profiles were determined using zone diameter interpretive criteria, as recommended by Clinical a

The epidemiology of candidemia in two United States cities: results of a population-based active surveillance.

We conducted prospective, active population-based surveillance for candidemia (defined as any Candida species isolated from blood) in Atlanta and San Francisco (total population, 5.34 million) during 1992-1993. The average annual incidence of candidemia at both sites was 8 per 100,000 population. The highest incidence (75 per 100,000) occurred among infants </=1 year old. In 19% of patients, candidemia developed prior to or on the day of admission. Underlying medical conditions included cancer (26%), abdominal surgery (14%), diabetes mellitus (13%), and human immunodeficiency virus infection (

Population genetic diversity of invasive Pomacea snails and surveillance of Angiostrongylus cantonensis in Shanghai, East China.

BACKGROUND: Golden apple snails (Gastropoda: Ampullariidae: Pomacea) were introduced into China in the 1980s for aquaculture and have since become widespread agricultural pests across East Asia. In addition to their invasive impact, they are a key intermediate host of the rat lungworm Angiostrongylus cantonensis (Secernentea: Angiostrongylidae) in China, the causative agent of eosinophilic meningitis in humans. METHODS: We conducted a malacological survey of 55 freshwater sites across Shanghai and neighboring East China provinces to assess Pomacea distribution, genetic diversity, and A. canto
