Reduced diaphyseal strength associated with high intracortical vascular porosity within long bones of children with osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a genetic disorder resulting in bone fragility. The mechanisms behind this fragility are not well understood. In addition to characteristic bone mass deficiencies, research suggests that bone material properties are compromised in individuals with this disorder. However, little data exists regarding bone properties beyond the microstructural scale in individuals with this disorder. Specimens were obtained from long bone diaphyses of nine children with osteogenesis imperfecta during routine osteotomy procedures. Small rectangular beams, oriented longitudinally and tra

Controlled release of chlorhexidine antiseptic from microporous amorphous silica applied in open porosity of an implant surface.

Amorphous microporous silica (AMS) serving as a reservoir for controlled release of a bioactive agent was applied in the open porosity of a titanium coating on a Ti-6Al-4V metal substrate. The pores of the AMS emptied by calcination were loaded with chlorhexidine diacetate (CHX) via incipient wetness impregnation with CHX solution, followed by solvent evaporation. Using this CHX loaded AMS system on titanium substrate sustained release of CHX into physiological medium was obtained over a 10 day-period. CHX released from the AMS coating was demonstrated to be effective in killing planktonic cul

Superficial topography and porosity of an absorbable barrier membrane impacts soft tissue response in guided bone regeneration.

BACKGROUND: Surface topography and porosity of barrier membranes is suggested to impact the soft and hard tissue response. In this study, the specific soft and hard tissue response characteristics of a synthetic polylactide membrane are evaluated including soft tissue inflammation, osteogenesis, and osteopromotion. METHODS: Analysis of porosity and surface topography of the test material was performed by scanning electron microscopy. Transosseous parietal defects were surgically created bilaterally in 32 BalbC/ByJ mice and treated either with the barrier (test) or sham-operated (control). Hea

Effect of beta-tricalcium phosphate particles with varying porosity on osteogenesis after sinus floor augmentation in humans.

This study examines the effect of two beta-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) particulate bone grafting materials with varying porosity on bone formation and on osteogenic marker expression 6 months after sinus floor augmentation. Unilateral sinus grafting was performed in 20 patients using a combination (4:1 ratio) of beta-TCP particles with 35% porosity (TCP-C) or 65% porosity (TCP-CM) and autogenous bone chips. At implant placement cylindrical biopsies were sampled and processed for immunohistochemical analysis of resin embedded sections. Sections were stained for collagen type I (Col I), alkaline

Surface porosity of enamel white spot lesions and penetration of fluorapatite nanocrystals into their subsurface: proof-of-concept study.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, we used atomic force microscopy (AFM) to quantify the size of surface pore apertures of enamel white spot lesions and then demonstrated the penetration of fluorapatite nanocrystals (nFA) into the subsurface of these lesions. METHODS: For the porosity study, enamel lesions were created on three sound human teeth using a demineralizing gel for 8 days. The interface between sound enamel and the artificial lesion was analyzed by AFM. To visualize the penetration of nFA tagged with a calcium-binding fluorophore (Fluo-4) into the subsurface of white spot lesions, we used

A Novel Bone Substitute with High Bioactivity, Strength, and Porosity for Repairing Large and Load-Bearing Bone Defects.

Achieving adequate healing in large or load-bearing bone defects is highly challenging even with surgical intervention. The clinical standard of repairing bone defects using autografts or allografts has many drawbacks. A bioactive ceramic scaffold, strontium-hardystonite-gahnite or "Sr-HT-Gahnite" (a multi-component, calcium silicate-based ceramic) is developed, which when 3D-printed combines high strength with outstanding bone regeneration ability. In this study, the performance of purely synthetic, 3D-printed Sr-HT-Gahnite scaffolds is assessed in repairing large and load-bearing bone defect

The Porosity and Stiffness of Articular Cartilage Extracellular Matrix Derived Scaffolds Modulate Chondrogenesis of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells.

Articular cartilage (AC) regeneration remains a major challenge in musculoskeletal tissue engineering. Cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM)-derived scaffolds have shown promise as tissue-specific biomaterials, but the extent to which the fabrication process can be tuned to modulate scaffold pore architecture and mechanics and how this might influence the chondrogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) remains incompletely defined. The aim of this study was to develop solubilized porcine AC-ECM scaffolds with controlled differences in pore size and matrix stiffness, and to

Diagenesis and Porosity Evolution of Deeply Buried Carbonate Reservoirs: Insights from the Permian Maokou Formation, Sichuan Basin.

Deeply buried carbonate reservoirs represent a critical frontier and high-priority target for global hydrocarbon exploration. However, the genetic mechanisms and spatial distribution of high-quality deeply buried carbonate reservoirs remain highly contentious. This study focuses on the Middle Permian Maokou Formation in the central Sichuan Basin, integrating multidisciplinary analytical methods (petrology, geochemistry, and geochronology) to systematically investigate the diagenetic evolution sequence and pore evolution processes of deeply buried carbonate reservoirs. The lithology of Maokou F

Composite Liquid Marble Templated Millimetric Capsule With Tunable Rigidity, Porosity, and Thermal Reconfigurability Toward 3D Cell Culture.

The extensive reliance on animal models in biomedical research motivates the development of advanced in vitro systems that recapitulate physiological complexity while minimizing animal use. Large cellular spheroids can mimic native tissue architecture; however, scalable fabrication of spheroids exceeding millimeter dimensions remains challenging. Here, we introduce a rigid porous capsule (RPC) in millimeter scale, a mechanically robust yet highly permeable platform that imposes external geometric confinement to enable cell-cell aggregation and three-dimensional proliferation. The RPC is fabric

Mechanical response of high-porosity rocks under high triaxial confining pressure and experimental study of indentation tests.

As oil and gas exploration and development continue to advance, ultra-deep and extra-deep formations have become the primary battleground for increasing global oil and gas reserves and production. The influence of high formation pressure on the macro-mechanical response of rock, particularly the mechanical response of indentations, remains unclear. This paper takes high-porosity rocks, which are commonly found in ultra-deep and extra-deep formations, as the research object. True triaxial compression test(TTCT) and conventional triaxial compression tests(CTCT) were conducted on high-porosity re

Fluorinated Iron(ii) clathrochelate units in metalorganic based copolymers: improved porosity, iodine uptake, and dye adsorption properties.

We report the synthesis of metalorganic copolymers made from the palladium catalyzed Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction between various iron(ii) clathrochelate building blocks with diethynyl-triptycene and fluorene derivatives. The target copolymers CCP1-5 were isolated in excellent yield and characterized by various instrumental analysis techniques. Interestingly, investigation of the copolymers' porosity properties discloses BET surface areas up to 337 m2 g-1 for the target compounds bearing fluorinated iron(ii) clathrochelate units CCP2,5. Moreover, the fluorinated copolymers display an ou

Increased cochlear otic capsule thickness and intracortical canal porosity in the oim mouse model of osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI or brittle bone disease) is a group of genetic disorders of the connective tissues caused mainly by mutations in the genes encoding collagen type I. Clinical manifestations of OI include skeletal fragility, bone deformities, and severe functional disabilities, such as hearing loss. Progressive hearing loss, usually beginning in childhood, affects approximately 70% of people with OI with more than half of the cases involving the inner ear. There is no cure for OI nor a treatment to ameliorate its corresponding hearing loss, and very little is known about the properti

High Cortico-Trabecular Transitional Zone Porosity and Reduced Trabecular Density in Men and Women with Stress Fractures.

To determine whether stress fractures are associated with bone microstructural deterioration we quantified distal radial and the unfractured distal tibia using high resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography in 26 cases with lower limb stress fractures (15 males, 11 females; mean age 37.1 ± 3.1 years) and 62 age-matched healthy controls (24 males, 38 females; mean age 35.0 ± 1.6 years). Relative to controls, in men, at the distal radius, cases had smaller cortical cross sectional area (CSA) (p = 0.012), higher porosity of the outer transitional zone (OTZ) (p = 0.006), inner transit

Experimental Research on Dynamic Variation of Permeability and Porosity of Low-Rank Inert-Rich Coal Under Stresses.

The effective stress variation can cause permeability change during coalbed methane (CBM) production. At the same time, macerals have an important influence on the stress sensitivity of coal reservoirs. To investigate the low-rank inert-rich coal permeability dynamic response to effective stress during the production of CBM, eight low-rank coal samples were collected from the Huanglong coalfield, China, and the dynamic changes in helium permeability and porosity were tested under conditions in which the effective stress changed from 0, 15, to 0 MPa. Then, the permeability dynamic change, stres

Cortical hand bone porosity and its association with distal radius fracture in middle aged and elderly women.

OBJECTIVE: Reduced bone mineral density (BMD), assessed by Dual Energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), is a well-known risk factor for fragility fracture. A large proportion of patients with fracture have only slightly reduced BMD. Assessment of other bone structure features than BMD may improve identification of individuals at increased fracture risk. Digital X-ray radiogrammetry (DXR), which is a feasible tool for measurement of metacarpal cortical bone density, also gives an estimate of cortical bone porosity. Our primary aim was to explore the association between cortical porosity in the hand

Biomechanics of porous lattice-structured tibial implant design for TAR: Role of pore morphology, porosity and implant design.

BACKGROUND: Implant-bone micromotion and stress shielding play a crucial role in the long-term survival of tibial implant for Total Ankle Replacement (TAR). Both these biomechanical considerations are majorly relying on the design of implant and fixation features. The biomechanics of different porous structure features and porosity on biomechanical performance of tibial implant design remain unexplored. The objective is to investigate the role of pore morphology, porosity, and tibial design on the biomechanics of porous lattice-structured tibial implant design for TAR. METHODS: This is achiev

Multiscale investigation of hydrate pore habits and microscopic seepage mechanisms for optimizing CO2 storage in high-porosity sediments.

Hydrate-based CO2 storage (HBCS) has emerged as a promising approach within carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, offering a potential pathway for mitigating CO2 emissions. The permeability of hydrate-bearing sediments (HBSs) is crucial for predicting the feasibility of HBCS, yet the seepage mechanisms become quite complex during the formation or dissociation of hydrates. The objective of this paper is to investigate the hydrate pore habits and the evolution of key physical properties at both macroscopic and microscopic scales, utilizing an integrated set of methodologies such as CT s

Phase-Pure Hydroxyapatite/β-Tricalcium Phosphate Scaffolds from Ultra-Pure Precursors: Composition Governs Porosity, Strength, and SBF Kinetics.

Biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP)scaffolds comprising hydroxyapatite (HA) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) were produced from ultra-pure precursors and processed under an α-TCP-avoiding schedule (1100 °C, 2 h). Quantitative X-ray diffraction (Rietveld/Profex) detected no α-TCP above the ~1 wt% limit of detection and quantified post-sintering phase fractions (wt% HA/β-TCP): 99.26/0.74, 68.51/31.49, and 27.57/72.43. Across compositions, SEM/ImageJ yielded similar mean macropore sizes (≈71-80 µm), while open porosity increased with the HA fraction (27.5 ± 1.8%, 39.1 ± 2.0%, 57.1 ± 2.4%). Compres

Phased array-based nonlinear wave mixing technique: Application to lack-of-fusion porosity characterization in additively manufactured metals.

The objective of this research is to demonstrate the effectiveness of a phased array-based nonlinear wave mixing technique to characterize internal, localized microscale damage in an additively manufactured (AM) component. By using phased arrays for the generation of the incident waves, it is possible to produce a nonlinear wave mixing scanning technique without the need for immersion or changing coupling conditions. The phased arrays can be configured to generate incident waves in multiple directions that meet the resonance conditions required for nonlinear wave mixing at a variety of interna

Non-enzymatic glycation reduces glucose transport in the human cartilage endplate independently of matrix porosity or proteoglycan content.

BACKGROUND: Intervertebral disc degeneration is associated with low back pain, which is a leading cause of disability. While the precise causes of disc degeneration are unknown, inadequate nutrient and metabolite transport through the cartilage endplate (CEP) may be one important factor. Prior work shows that CEP transport properties depend on the porosity of the CEP matrix, but little is known about the role of CEP characteristics that could influence transport properties independently from porosity. Here, we show that CEP transport properties depend on the extent of non-enzymatic glycation o
