TOPIC: To estimate the incidence of complications after posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens implantation and to evaluate temporal and geographic variation in reported outcomes.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: PCPIOLs are widely used for refractive correction, yet uncertainty persists regarding the true frequency of mechanical, anterior-segment, and posterior-segment complications. Reliable incidence estimates are essential for patient counseling and postoperative management.
METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis included randomized and nonrandomized trials and observational studies inv

Ocular symptoms can be the presenting manifestation of Takayasu arteritis (TA) or could be indicative of disease reactivation. A review of published literature related to posterior segment manifestations of TA by using the keywords "Takayasu arteritis," "ophthalmic manifestations," "retina," "retinopathy," "ocular," "optic nerve," and "optic neuropathy" was performed. In total, 62 case reports and 12 case series were included. The majority of the articles were from Asia (n = 47, 64%). Females outnumbered males in the ratio of 7:1. The mean age of patients was 33 years (range: 8-78 years, SD: 1

Neurodegenerative diseases affecting the posterior segment of the eye are one of the major causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. The pathogenesis of these retinal pathologies is characterized by a multifactorial etiology, involving the complex interaction of different apoptotic mechanisms, suggesting that effective treatments will require a multimodal approach. Thus, combination therapy based on the potential synergistic activities of drugs with different mechanisms of action is currently receiving considerable attention. Here, we summarize several kinds of strategy for the co-administra

The vitreous humor of the eye presents a crucial target for posterior segment therapy due to its proximity to the retina and relatively easy accessibility. Although intravitreous injections have long been the primary method for treating posterior segment disorders, recent successes in non-invasive topical treatments have led to the exploration of alternative administration routes. The objective of our study is to establish a platform for a Parallel Artificial Membrane Permeability Assay (PAMPA) model that mimics the posterior segment, modelling the permeation process of compounds applied topic

Age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, posterior uveitis, and retinitis due to glaucoma are leading causes of vision loss in the United States and other developed countries. Because these diseases are located in the posterior segment of the eye, topical application of ophthalmic medicines is of limited benefit, since topically applied drugs rarely reach therapeutic levels in the affected posterior tissues such as the choroid and retina. Intravitreal injections can deliver drugs to the posterior segment without the side effects associated with systemic administration. However,

The impact of 10-11 years of successful vector control on ocular onchocerciasis was evaluated in the population of 13 villages in the central part of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme area. The prevalence of ocular microfilariae was found to have reduced remarkably and loads over 20 microfilariae in the anterior chamber of the eye or the cornea which was rampant before the start of vector control, were rare. Whilst limited change in the age specific prevalence of lesions of the posterior segment of the eye was recorded, significant reduction in the prevalence of lesions of the anterior segm

One hundred consecutive eyes underwent vitrectomy with the disposable vitrophage via a pars plana approach. Eyes were divided into two main categories based on opacity location-in the anterior or posterior segment. Patients with posterior segment opacities had diabetic retinopathy, nondiabetic vitreous hemorrhages, retinal detachments associated with vitreous hemorrhage, bands, or membranes, and intraocular foreign bodies or silicone oil. Patients with anterior segment opacities were treated for pupillary membranes resulting from surgical trauma or perforating injuries, and for complications f

UNLABELLED: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive retinal disease and becomes the leading cause of blindness. It is well established that early detection is the key to preservation of functional vision. However, it is very difficult to diagnose AMD in very early stages, before structural changes are evident. Consequently, investigating the biomechanical properties of the retina maybe essential for understanding its physiological function. In this study, we present a shear wave-based quantitative method for estimating the elasticity of the posterior eye using shaker-based opti

Occult globe rupture is a rare but potentially devastating result of eye trauma. The authors present a case of a woman who sustained blunt trauma to the right eye resulting in a peripapillary circumferential posterior globe rupture. Clinically, the eye maintained good vision and normal intraocular pressure with a clear media, though subretinal fluid and retinal hemorrhage were present overlying the scleral defect. Enhanced depth imaging spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (EDI SD-OCT) revealed a sharp step-off of the sclera, choroid, and Bruch's membrane/retinal pigment epithelium, wi

The posterior ocular circulatory system comprises choroidal vasculature and central retinal and posterior ciliary arteries (PCAs) that are fundamental for ocular tissue maintenance. Much is known about the development of the retinal vascular system, but that of the posterior ocular circulation system remain obscure. Therefore, we aimed to clarify the development of the intraocular vasculature involved in the posterior ocular circulation system. Choriocapillaris and hyaloid capillaries are formed in situ and de novo through the endothelial differentiation of hemangioblasts. The intraocular segm

Traumatic subconjunctival dislocation of the posterior chamber intraocular lens (PCIOL) is a rare and emergency condition. Here, we report an interesting variation of rare case of inferior subconjuctival dislocation of PCIOL in a 75-year-old female patient following blunt trauma to her right eye with cow's head. All the previous literature with subconjuctival dislocation of PCIOL has reported the superior dislocation of intraocular lens. Inferior subconjunctival dislocation has never been reported in previous literature.
