BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The representation elicited in the cingulate motor area has been demonstrated in animals, but remains unclear in humans. In particular, the representation and pathogenic mechanisms of the posterior cingulate cortex are poorly understood, especially in humans. We describe a case of posterior cingulate infarction associated with contralateral astasia.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 67-year-old right-handed man with a 10-year history of hypertension suddenly presented with right-sided pulsion on attempting to stand or sit. On the following day, he could not maintain a sitting positi

See Hamandi (doi:10.1093/awx049) for a scientific commentary on this article.Photosensitivity is a condition in which lights induce epileptiform activities. This abnormal electroencephalographic response has been associated with hyperexcitability of the visuo-motor system. Here, we evaluate if intrinsic dysfunction of this network is present in brain activity at rest, independently of any stimulus and of any paroxysmal electroencephalographic activity. To address this issue, we investigated the haemodynamic correlates of the spontaneous alpha rhythm, which is considered the hallmark of the bra

Binocular depth perception is mediated by neural pathways that involve thalamic nuclei, the posterior parietal lobe and adjacent gyri, and white matter projections connecting these regions. Vascular dementia results from a variety of pathologic syndromes that can affect these areas, and in the current study is shown to produce associated impairment of stereoacuity or complete stereoblindness. Stereoacuity was relatively more impaired by right than left hemisphere pathology, by cortical than subcortical vascular processes, and by lesions that involved the parietal lobe. The extent of impairment

It is well established that serotonergic (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) fibers, mainly originating from the dorsal and median raphe nuclei of the brainstem, distribute throughout the forebrain, most heavily to 'limbic' forebrain structures. Few reports have examined the distribution of 5-HT fibers to the thalamus and none to our knowledge using immunoprocedures for the detection of the serotonin transporter (SERT)-a very sensitive marker for 5-HT fibers. Using immunohistochemical methods for SERT, we examined the pattern of distribution of 5-HT fibers to the thalamus in the rat. We show that sero

The distribution of substance P-like immunoreactivity in the chameleon brain and spinal cord was studied with immunohistochemical methods using polyclonal antibodies against substance P. In the telencephalon, immunoreactive cell bodies and fibers were located primarily in the striatum and in the globus pallidus. In addition, few substance P-like fibers were observed in the cortical areas, in the septum, and in the amygdala. In the diencephalon, a high density of immunostained neurons and fibers were seen in the periventricular and ventrolateral hypothalamus. Another group of cell bodies was lo

The goal of this study was to determine whether somatosensory thalamic nuclei other than the ventroposterior nucleus proper (VP) have connections with area 3b of the postcentral cortex in squirrel monkeys. Small injections of the anatomical tracers wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) or 3H-proline were placed in electrophysiologically identified representations of body parts. The results indicate that, besides the well-established somatotopically organized connections with VP, area 3b has connections with three other nuclei of the somatosensory thalamus: the ve

We report a series of seven patients in whom a combined pattern of complex movement disorders restricted to one upper extremity emerged as a result of posterolateral thalamic lesions of vascular origin. This disorder was mainly characterized by choreiform and dystonic movements associated with variable, rhythmic, alternating movements of low frequency (myorhythmia). All cases showed, on computed tomography scan and/or magnetic resonance imaging, focal lesions involving the posterolateral quadrant of the thalamus. Review of similar cases reported with identical clinico-radiologic features allow

VGLUT1 and VGLUT2 have been reported to show complementary distributions in most brain regions and have been assumed to define distinct functional elements. In the present study, we first investigated the expression of VGLUT1 and VGLUT2 in the trigeminal sensory nuclear complex of the rat by dual-fluorescence in situ hybridization. Although VGLUT1 and/or VGLUT2 mRNA signals were detected in all the nuclei, colocalization was found only in the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus (Vp). About 64% of glutamatergic Vp neurons coexpressed VGLUT1 and VGLUT2, and the others expressed either VGLUT1 or

BACKGROUND: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT), often referred to as rumination in the mood disorders literature, is a symptom dimension associated with poor prognosis and suicide in major depressive disorder (MDD). Given the transdiagnostic nature of RNT, this study aimed to evaluate the hypothesis that neurobiological substrates of RNT in MDD may share the brain mechanisms underlying obsessions, particularly those involving cortico-striatal-thalamic-cortical (CSTC) circuits.
METHODS: Thirty-nine individuals with MDD underwent RNT induction during fMRI. Trait-RNT was measured by the Ruminati

The mediorostral neostriatum/hyperstriatum ventrale (MNH) and neostriatum dorsocaudale (Ndc) of the domestic chick are crucially involved in auditory filial imprinting, whereas the lobus parolfactorius (LPO) seems to be involved in the emotional modulation of behavior. Because there is evidence that MNH and Ndc are akin to higher association areas in mammals, the present study evaluates the dopaminergic and thalamic input to these areas, as well as to the avian caudate/putamen homologue LPO, by using retrograde pathway tracing, together with dopamine (DA) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunohi

Excessive beta oscillations (15-25Hz) in the basal ganglia have been linked to the akineto-rigid symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) although it remains unclear whether the underlying mechanism is causative or associative. While a number of studies have reported beta activity in the subthalamic nucleus and globus pallidus internus, relatively little is known about the beta rhythm of the motor thalamus and its relation to movement disorders. To test whether thalamic beta oscillations are related to parkinsonian symptoms, we examined the spectral properties of neuronal activity in the ventral t

Multimodal data collected by international and national biobanking efforts have distinct scales and model orders and provide unique and complementary insights into disease mechanisms. We propose a novel, flexible and efficient data fusion approach-aNy-way independent component analysis (aNy-way ICA). aNy-way ICA fuses N-way multimodal or multidomain data by optimizing the entire loading correlation structure of linked components via Gaussian independent vector analysis (IVA-G) and simultaneously optimizing independence via separate ICAs. This allows for distinct model orders for different moda

The GABAA receptor is the most abundant inhibitory receptor in the human brain and is assembled from a variety of different subunit subtypes which determines their pharmacology and physiology. To determine which GABAA receptor subunit proteins are found in the human thalamus we investigated the distribution of five major GABAA receptor subunits α1, α2, α3, β2,3 and γ2 using immunohistochemical techniques. The α1-, β2,3- and γ2- subunits which combine to form a benzodiazepine sensitive GABAA receptor showed the most intense levels of staining and were the most common subunits found throughout t

It has been hypothesized that hypothalamus is involved in narcolepsy. The relative difference between cerebral glucose metabolism of 24 narcoleptic patients and 24 normal controls was studied using 18F-fluorodeoxy glucose positron emission tomography. Patients with narcolepsy showed significantly reduced cerebral glucose metabolism in bilateral rectal and subcallosal gyri, the medial convexity of right superior frontal gyrus, bilateral precuneus, right inferior parietal lobule, and in left supramarginal gyrus (uncorrected p < 0.001). Bilateral posterior hypothalami and mediodorsal thalamic nuc

INTRODUCTION: Neuromodulation of the thalamic centromedian nucleus (CM) is an established therapy for epilepsy and been applied for pain, Tourette syndrome, and disorders of consciousness. Accurate targeting remains challenging because CM is poorly visualized on conventional MRI sequences, necessitating reliance on indirect targeting approaches. Although advanced MRI sequences, such as magnetization-prepared rapid acquisition of two gradient echoes (MP2RAGE) and white matter null (WMn), have been explored, they fail to reliably delineate the boundary between CM and lateral thalamus, a region a

The neurons in the medial geniculate body were studied in Golgi preparations from adult mustached bats (Pteronotus parnellii). Their somatic and dendritic configurations were compared with those of cells in other, nonecholocating mammals. A second goal was to use the thalamic nuclear subdivisions derived from Golgi material to integrate the findings in parallel studies of cytoarchitecture, immunocytochemistry, and tectothalamic connections. Three primary divisions are defined. The ventral division is large and has a stereotyped neuronal organization. Medium-sized perikarya (about 10 microns in

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results not only in motor deficits, but produces, in many patients, excruciating chronic pain (SCI pain). We have previously shown, in a rodent model, that SCI causes suppression of activity in the GABAergic nucleus, the zona incerta (ZI), and concomitant increased activity in one of its main targets, the posterior nucleus of the thalamus (PO); the increased PO activity is correlated with the maintenance and expression of hyperalgesia after SCI. Here, we test the hypothesis that SCI causes a similar pathological increase in other thalamic nuclei regulated by the ZI, sp

Rab3A is a small GTP-binding synaptic vesicle protein, shown to dissociate from synaptic vesicle membranes upon depolarization-induced exocytosis. Using an antiserum raised against rab3A, we found that the antigen was localized to the neuropil of specific brain regions, but was not present in major fiber tracts or most cell bodies. For example, the neuropil of several thalamic nuclei (i.e., dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, lateral posterior nucleus, ventroposterior nucleus), cerebral cortex, upper layers of the superior colliculus and matrix zones of the neostriatum, were strongly immunoreac

The diencephalon, upper brain stem and other basal brain structures are supplied chiefly by penetrating branches of the cerebral arteries. We examined the retrochiasmatic space between the superior border of the pons and posterior edge of the optic chiasm in six randomly selected adult fresh brain specimens. Lateral or anterolateral to the mamillary bodies, two small quadrangular spaces (2.5 x 3.5 mm) were found that were limited laterally by the junction of the optic tract and crus cerebri. These spaces were pierced on each side by 1 to 5 small penetrating branches (premamillary arterial comp

Among the involuntary movement disorders, tremor is a common phenomenology seen in clinical practice. The important factors that need to be determined while assessing a patient with tremor include the phenomenology of tremor, presence or absence of other neurologic signs, and the effect of medications or alcohol. Tremor can broadly be classified based on the circumstances under which it occurs, i.e., rest or action. The basal ganglia-cerebello-thalamic and dentate-olivary circuits are involved in the generation of tremor. Experimental data have suggested the olivocerebellar system as the site
