Intravoxel incoherent motion of postmortem in-situ human brains: Insights and forensic implications.

Intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) distinguishes different diffusion processes based on varying molecular velocities. While IVIM is used in-vivo, postmortem studies are lacking, although they could provide valuable insights and validate in-vivo results. In this study, postmortem in-situ brain MRI scans of 13 deceased subjects were performed by applying a diffusion-weighted single-shot-echo-planar imaging sequence with 16 b-values (0-2500 s/mm2). The IVIM parameters perfusion fraction (f), diffusion (D), pseudo-diffusion (D*) and kurtosis (K) were determined in

Causes of death and types of injuries of avalanche fatalities based on forensic data: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The main causes of death in avalanche victims are asphyxia, trauma, and hypothermia. However, most evidence is based on epidemiological studies with inconsistent forensic data. We aimed to integrate current evidence on causes of death and types of injuries in avalanche victims undergoing postmortem examination. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of studies reporting forensic data on avalanche-related deaths. Eligible studies included victims who underwent postmortem examination, excluding those buried in buildings or vehicles. Extracted data included study and population chara

In Vivo Imaging of Gray Matter Microstructure in Major Psychiatric Disorders: Opportunities for Clinical Translation.

Postmortem studies reveal that individuals with major neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder have gray matter microstructural abnormalities. These include abnormalities in neuropil organization, expression of proteins supporting neuritic and synaptic integrity, and myelination. Genetic and postmortem studies suggest that these changes may be causally linked to the pathogenesis of these disorders. Advances in diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance image (dMRI) acquisition techniques and biophysical modeling allow for the quantification of gray matter micros

Focal amyloid and asymmetric tau in an imaging-to-autopsy case of clinical primary progressive aphasia with Alzheimer disease neuropathology.

Quantification of in vivo amyloid and tau PET imaging relationships with postmortem measurements are critical for validating the sensitivity and specificity imaging biomarkers across clinical phenotypes with Alzheimer disease neuropathologic change (ADNC). This study examined the quantitative relationship between regional binding of in vivo 18F-florbetapir amyloid PET and 18F-flortaucipir tau PET with postmortem stereological counts of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) in a case of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) with ADNC, where neurodegeneration asymmetrically targets the l

Healing of ischemic injury in the retina.

UNLABELLED: Neuro- and retinal degenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's, age-related macular degeneration, stroke, and central retinal artery occlusion, rob millions of their independence. Studying these diseases in human retinas has been hindered by the immediate loss of neuronal activity postmortem. While recent studies restored limited activity in postmortem CNS tissues, synchronized neuronal transmission >30 minutes postmortem remained elusive. Our study overcomes this barrier by reviving and sustaining light signal transmission in human retinas recovered up to four hours and stored 48

Effects of postmortem interval on postmortem computed tomography findings in bath-related drowning cases.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The influence of postmortem interval (PMI) on postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) findings in bath-related drowning remains unclear. This study aimed to identify PMI-susceptible and relatively stable PMCT findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-seven bath-related drowning cases met the eligibility criteria. To minimize the potential influence of resuscitation-related artifacts, the primary analysis was performed in 72 cases after excluding five hospital-transported cardiopulmonary arrest cases with documented pre-PMCT resuscitative intervention. Quantitative PMCT

Diffusion MRI in the postmortem brain: case report.

Postmortem brain of a ten-month-old child was examined by MR imaging, and diffusion MR imaging at the 12th hour after death in order to disclose the cause of death. There were basal ganglion lesions indicating a mitochondrial disorder. There was a prominent difference between the ADC values of the white matter (0.28+/-0.04 x 10(-3) mm2/s) and cortex (0.42+/-0.04 x 10(-3) mm2/s), and this was statistically significant (p< 0.0001). This difference suggested that in the postmortem brain the conditions in the white matter leading to restriction of movement of water molecules are more severe than t

3D Surface Scanning of Corpses - Assessment of the Usefulness of the Procedure in Collecting and Archiving Evidence.

The aim of the study was to assess the usefulness of 3D surface scanning of corpses as a procedure for collecting and archiving evidence material in forensic medical practice. The research material consisted of surface scans of the bodies of deceased individuals undergoing autopsy at the request of the prosecutor's office. Scanning was performed non‑invasively, without direct contact between the device and the body, using an Apple LiDAR sensor and the Recon3D application. The procedure included three stages: scanning the body in clothing, without clothing, and after washing; at each stage, bot

Comment on "Automatic rib fracture detection on postmortem CT data using deep learning".

Lopez-Melia et al. recently reported a feasibility study on automatic rib fracture detection in postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) using nnDetection, a self-configuring three-dimensional object detection framework based on deep learning (DL), and explored the impact of domain shift between clinical and postmortem datasets. This comment discusses three issues that may refine the interpretation of their findings and inform future work. First, we argue that the relationship to previous PMCT DL studies by Ibanez et al., including RiFNet and a subsequent fracture-type classifier, should be clari

Fatal systemic (paradoxical) air embolism diagnosed by postmortem funduscopy.

Air embolism is often unrecognized and underreported. Published case reports or case series describe only rare fundal examinations of retinal air emboli (RAE)-a distinctive sign of systemic air embolism. We report an infant, found unresponsive at home, who died in the emergency department after unsuccessful resuscitative efforts. Before the autopsy, diagnostic RAE were recognized and imaged during postmortem funduscopy. Postmortem radiography and an autopsy confirmed systemic (paradoxical) air embolism due to inflicted abdominal and thoracic blunt force injuries. While a few descriptions and i

A clear presentation of intracranial hypostasis on PMCT.

Intracranial hypostasis is a common postmortem change evident on postmortem CT (PMCT), but can be readily misinterpreted as subdural hematoma by inexperienced physicians. Although PMCT is necessarily lacking contrast enhancement, we reconstructed hypostatic sinuses into three-dimensional images resembling the results of in vivo venography. This simple methodology facilitates easy recognition of intracranial hypostasis.

Postmortem computed tomography of gas gangrene with aortic gas in a dialysis patient.

Recently, postmortem imaging is sometimes used as an alternative to conventional autopsy. However, there are few case reports of postmortem imaging of dialysis patients. Here, we report a fatal case of gas gangrene involving a 76-year-old man who underwent dialysis. He died suddenly before a diagnosis could be established. Immediately after his death, postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) revealed gas accumulation in his right upper extremity and ascending aorta. Gas gangrene progresses rapidly and may sometimes result in sudden death before it is diagnosed. In this case, PMCT findings were us

Comparing Acute IOP-Induced Lamina Cribrosa Deformations Premortem and Postmortem.

PURPOSE: Lamina cribrosa (LC) deformations caused by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) are believed to contribute to glaucomatous neuropathy and have therefore been extensively studied, in many conditions, from in vivo to ex vivo. We compare acute IOP-induced global and local LC deformations immediately before (premortem) and after (postmortem) sacrifice by exsanguination. METHODS: The optic nerve heads of three healthy monkeys 12 to 15 years old were imaged with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography under controlled IOP premortem and postmortem. Volume scans were acquired at baselin

7.0 Tesla MRI in fetal autopsy: a preliminary exploration of integrating image optimization with clinical practice in a multidisciplinary workflow.

BACKGROUND: Fetal and neonatal autopsies are crucial for determining causes of death and guiding future pregnancies; however, due to cultural and personal factors, their clinical application rates are decreasing. Noninvasive postmortem magnetic resonance imaging (PMMRI) has emerged as an alternative to fetal and neonatal autopsies. Ultra-high-field 7.0 Tesla (7.0T) PMMRI provides near-microscopic spatial resolution, superior tissue contrast, and a high signal-to-noise ratio compared to lower-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, its broader clinical application is challenged by stri

Iron accumulation in the oculomotor nerve of the progressive supranuclear palsy brain.

Abnormal iron accumulation around the substantia nigra (SN) is a diagnostic indicator of Parkinsonism. This study aimed to identify iron-related microarchitectural changes around the SN of brains with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) via postmortem validations and in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). 7 T high-resolution MRI was applied to two postmortem brain tissues, from one normal brain and one PSP brain. Histopathological examinations were performed to demonstrate the molecular origin of the high-resolution postmortem MRI findings, by using ferric iron staining, myelin staining, a

Improved Visualization of Cortical Lesions in Multiple Sclerosis Using 7T MP2RAGE.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cortical lesions are common and often extensive in multiple sclerosis but are difficult to visualize by MRI, leaving important questions about their clinical implications and response to therapy unanswered. Our aim was to determine whether cortical lesions are better visualized using magnetization prepared 2 rapid acquisition gradient echoes (MP2RAGE) than T2*-weighted imaging on 7T MR imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Brain MR imaging using T1-weighted MP2RAGE at 500-μm isotropic resolution, T2*-weighted gradient-echo, and T2*-weighted segmented echo-planar imaging sequ

Postmortem echocardiography and tomographic anatomy of hypoplastic left heart syndrome after palliative surgery.

A study was undertaken to improve the understanding of the 3-dimensional (3-D) topology of a complex surgical reconstruction. The pathologic anatomy was investigated by first fixing postmortem heart specimens in such a way as to preserve the 3-D relations. Next, a technique for postmortem 2-D echocardiography was developed to aid in selection of tomographic planes for sectioning the specimens. Subsequent adjustment of planes of section was made to better show particular facets of the anatomy. The material for this investigation was drawn from cases of hypoplastic left heart syndrome after surg

Assessment of eyeball findings on two sequential post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) : no reliable marker for post-mortem interval.

BACKGROUND: It is important to understand post-mortem changes in post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) image interpretation. Only a few studies have focused on the eyeballs. This study aimed to clarify the changes in eyeball findings on PMCT and examine whether it is possible to estimate the post-mortem interval (PMI) based on this findings. METHODS: During a 13-year period, data from 29 consecutive patients who underwent CT scans twice (the first CT taken at the time of death in our hospital: time from confirmation of death from - 4 h 15 min to 2 h 17 min, and the second CT taken prior to a
