Center of mass acceleration feedback control of standing balance by functional neuromuscular stimulation against external postural perturbations.

This study investigated the use of center of mass (COM) acceleration feedback for improving performance of a functional neuromuscular stimulation control system to restore standing function to a subject with complete, thoracic-level spinal cord injury. The approach for linearly relating changes in muscle stimulation to changes in COM acceleration was verified experimentally and subsequently produced data to create an input-output map driven by sensor feedback. The feedback gains were systematically tuned to reduce upper extremity (UE) loads applied to an instrumented support device while resis

Trunk sway measures of postural stability during clinical balance tests in patients with chronic whiplash injury symptoms.

STUDY DESIGN: Trunk sway occurring during clinical stance and gait tasks was compared between a group of subjects with a chronic whiplash injury, resulting from an automobile collision, and a normal collective. OBJECTIVES: To examine if population specific trunk sway patterns for stance and gait could be identified for chronic whiplash injury patients. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Our previous work has established that it is possible to identify specific patterns of stance and gait deficits for vestibular loss (both acute and compensated) patients and those with Parkinson's disease. Our quest

Sedentary behaviour is linked to impaired postural balance but not gastrocnemius medialis tendon properties in older adults.

Sedentary behaviour is increasingly recognised as a distinct physiological risk factor in ageing; however, its relationship with intrinsic tendon properties and postural balance remains undefined. The objective of this study was to determine whether Sedentary Behaviour is independently associated with gastrocnemius medialis tendon properties and postural balance in older adults, after accounting for physical activity. Healthy older adults (n = 105) completed this cross-sectional investigation. Habitual physical behaviour was quantified over 7 days using triaxial accelerometry. All participants

Smartphone-Based Assessment of Postural Balance in Patients With End-Stage Knee Osteoarthritis: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent joint disease and significantly impacts quality of life, particularly by increasing the risk of falls due to balance impairments. Individuals with knee osteoarthritis often experience musculoskeletal deficits that compromise proprioception and postural stability. While traditional tools for assessing balance, such as force platforms and motion capture systems, are effective, they are also costly and less accessible in clinical settings. Advances in mobile technology have enabled the use of smartphone-based inertial sensors as a practical alternat

The influence of false interoceptive feedback on emotional state and balance responses to height-induced postural threat.

Postural threat elicits a robust emotional response (e.g., fear and anxiety about falling), with concomitant modifications in balance. Recent theoretical accounts propose that emotional responses to postural threats are manifested, in part, from the conscious monitoring and appraisal of bodily signals ('interoception'). Here, we empirically probe the role of interoception in shaping emotional responses to a postural threat by experimentally manipulating interoceptive cardiac feedback. Sixty young adults completed a single 60-s trial under the following conditions: Ground (no threat) without he

Disrupted somatosensory input alters postural control strategies during the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) in healthy people.

BACKGROUND: Chronic adaptations, including persistent sensorimotor deficits, remain in individuals with a history of ankle instability, resulting in altered postural control strategies during functional tasks such as gait, running, or landing. However, we do not know the contribution of the altered somatosensory input on postural control strategies during a dynamic balance task such as the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT). RESEARCH QUESTION: The purpose of this study was to characterize postural control strategies with and without disrupted somatosensory input during a dynamic balance task

Age related differences in balance approached by a novel dual-task test of anticipatory postural control strategies.

INTRODUCTION: Assessment of balance is key to identifying individuals with postural control deficits and an increased fall risk. Subjects may compensate for their deficits by utilizing other strategies; to avoid this, it is recommended to assess postural control using a dual-task test. In most dual-task tests, it is difficult to monitor the performance in the secondary task and the individual's task prioritisation. This study evaluated a new dual-task testing approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A convenience sample of 54 community-dwelling elderly (age 65+ years) and a reference group of 20 youn

Frequency coherence analysis of postural balance in able-bodied and in non-treated adolescent idiopathic scoliotic girls.

BACKGROUND: This study test if the frequency coherence calculated for the overall, low and high frequency bandwidths of the center of pressure excursions and free-moment calculated during standing balance are similar between scoliotic and non-scoliotic girls and if the coherence values within each frequency band are comparable for a given group of girls. METHODS: Twenty-nine girls with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis formed the scoliotic group and 22 able-bodied girls formed the non-scoliotic group. Each girl maintained a quiet upright stance on a force plate. Three trials were performed at a

Comparison of jump-landing protocols with Biodex Balance System as measures of dynamic postural stability in athletes.

The objective of the study was to determine whether a relationship exists between the two common methods for assessing postural stability in athletes: the time-to-stabilisation (TTS) via force-plate and the Biodex Balance System (BBS). The conditions under which these measurements assess dynamic postural control may not provide sufficient feedback to practitioners. Fourty-four amateur soccer players with no history of musculoskeletal disorders volunteered for the study. Pearson correlation was used to compare the anterior-posterior (AP), medio-lateral (ML), and the overall stability indexes me

Forestwalk: A Machine Learning Workflow Brings New Insights Into Posture and Balance in Rodent Beam Walking.

The beam walk is widely used to study coordination and balance in rodents. While the task has ethological validity, the main endpoints of "foot slip counts" and "time to cross" are prone to human-rater variability and offer limited sensitivity and specificity. We asked if machine learning-based methods could reveal previously hidden, but biologically relevant, insights from the task. Marker-less pose estimation, using DeepLabCut, was deployed to label 13 anatomical key points on mice traversing the beam. Next, we automated classical endpoint detection, including foot slips, with high recall (>

Real-time conscious postural control is not affected when balancing on compliant surface by young adults.

Previous research has illustrated that real-time conscious postural control (i.e., reinvestment - shifting from movement automaticity to a more consciously controlled and monitoring of movement) increased with standing task difficulties among healthy older adults. However, such association has not been investigated in the younger population. This study attempted to examine real-time conscious postural control among healthy young adults when performing different standing tasks on a compliant (foam) surface. T3-Fz EEG (electroencephalography) coherence, indicative of real-time conscious postural

Fronto-Parietal Brain Areas Contribute to the Online Control of Posture during a Continuous Balance Task.

Neuroimaging studies have provided evidence for the involvement of frontal and parietal cortices in postural control. However, the specific role of these brain areas for postural control remains to be known. Here, we investigated the effects of disruptive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over supplementary motor areas (SMA) during challenging continuous balance task in healthy young adults. We hypothesized that a virtual lesion of SMA will alter activation within the brain network identified using electroencephalography (EEG) and impair performance of the postural task. Twenty healthy y
