BACKGROUND: Although absolute poverty in rural China has been systematically eradicated, rural residents continue to suffer deprivation in terms of education, healthcare and living conditions, which has become an urgent obstacle to China's goal of rural revitalisation and common prosperity. In addition, the impact of health on multidimensional poverty remains unclear.
METHODS: This study constructs four periods of balanced panel data on the basis of baseline survey data from 2012 and follow-up survey data from 2015, 2019 and 2022 to conduct a longitudinal study of multidimensional poverty amo

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between dental caries and multidimensional poverty in Colombia using data from the National Oral Health Survey (ENSAB IV, Spanish acronym).
METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted using data from 20,534 individuals in six regions of the country. Dental caries was assessed using the ICDAS system, and multidimensional poverty was measured using a proxy Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) adapted from the method adjusted for Colombia. Descriptive analyses and bivariate comparisons were carried out, and Poisson

Area-level socioeconomic disadvantage is an established risk factor for functional limitations. Yet, mechanisms underlying this association and whether such processes vary by gender is unknown. Guided by stress process theory, we examine whether county- and tract-level poverty rates are differentially associated with functional limitations by gender and whether secondary ecological stressors (e.g., perceived neighborhood danger and physical disorder) and individual-level psychosocial factors (e.g., coping behaviors and social support) mediate these relationships. Using data from the Midlife in

BACKGROUND: Children from families with low socioeconomic status (SES), as determined by income, experience several negative outcomes, such as higher rates of newborn mortality and behavioral issues. Moreover, associations between DNA methylation and low income or poverty status are evident beginning at birth, suggesting prenatal influences on offspring development. Recent evidence suggests neighborhood opportunities may protect against some of the health consequences of living in low income households. The goal of this study was to assess whether neighborhood opportunities moderate associatio

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the cumulative impact of persistent poverty on dental caries among elementary schoolchildren in Japan.
METHODS: Data were derived from four-wave longitudinal data of children in all public elementary schools in Adachi City, Tokyo, Japan, from 2015 to 2020 (n=4291, response rate: 80.1%-83.8%). Poverty status, defined as annual household income <JPY3 million, material deprivation or payment difficulties for lifeline utilities, was assessed by caregiver questionnaires when the children were in the first, second, fourth and sixth grades. School dentists assesse

The global 2030 goal set by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), to eliminate dog-mediated human rabies deaths, has undeniably been a catalyst for many countries to re-assess existing dog rabies control programmes. Additionally, the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development includes a blueprint for global targets which will benefit both people and secure the health of the planet. Rabies is acknowledged as a disease of poverty, but the connections between economic development and rabies control and e

More than 330 million people are still living in extreme poverty in Africa. Timely, accurate, and spatially fine-grained baseline data are essential to determining policy in favor of reducing poverty. The potential of "Big Data" to estimate socioeconomic factors in Africa has been proven. However, most current studies are limited to using a single data source. We propose a computational framework to accurately predict the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) at a finest spatial granularity and coverage of 552 communes in Senegal using environmental data (related to food security, econom

OBJECTIVES: We examined the relationship between timing of poverty and risk of first-incidence obesity from ages 3 to 15.5 years.
METHODS: We used the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (1991-2007) to study 1150 children with repeated measures of income, weight, and height from birth to 15.5 years in 10 US cities. Our dependent variable was the first incidence of obesity (body mass index ≥ 95th percentile). We measured poverty (income-to-needs ratio < 2) prior to age 2 years and a lagged, time-varying measure of poverty bet

Living in poverty places children at very high risk for problems across a variety of domains, including schooling, behavioral regulation, and health. Aspects of cognitive functioning, such as information processing, may underlie these kinds of problems. How might poverty affect the brain functions underlying these cognitive processes? Here, we address this question by observing and analyzing repeated measures of brain development of young children between five months and four years of age from economically diverse backgrounds (n = 77). In doing so, we have the opportunity to observe changes in

INTRODUCTION: Rest intolerance-the inability to rest without experiencing negative emotions or cognitive distress-is an emerging psychological phenomenon. This study aimed to explore the complex interplay among personality traits, state anxiety, perceived time poverty, and rest intolerance.
METHODS: Using a sample of 541 college students, we constructed a 13-node regularized partial correlation network at the dimension level, excluding one unreliable subscale.
RESULTS: Results revealed that Neuroticism, Time Pressure, and Negative Feelings emerged as the central nodes within their respective

BACKGROUND: Menstrual poverty (MP) defines the lack of access to menstrual health management (MHM) due to financial barriers, and there are limited data regarding its effects on youth mental health. The purpose of this study was to assess MHM practices among adolescents, determine the prevalence of MP according to socioeconomic status and examine its association with depressive symptoms (DS).
METHODS: We conducted a survey on a nationally drawn sample (N = 1241) of adolescents aged 10-19 years. Data were collected from 12 provinces, which were classified into three (Tiers 5-6 having the lowes

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study uses the care poverty framework, focusing on both individuals and structures. In this context, structures are represented by 2 welfare states: Taiwan, an East Asian welfare system and Finland, a Nordic welfare state. This study explores multidimensional care poverty rates and examines 3 realms of individual factors (health status, sociodemographic factors, and care support availability) among older adults in these long-term care (LTC) models.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2019 Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Ageing Survey and the 202

BACKGROUND: The zoonotic infectious diseases of poverty (zIDPs) are a group of diseases contributing to global poverty, with significant impacts on a substantial population. This study aims to describe the global, regional, and national burden of zIDPs-schistosomiasis, cystic echinococcosis, cysticercosis, and food-borne trematodiases (FBTs)-to support policy making and resource allocation for their control and elimination.
METHODS: Data of zIDPs from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021 were retrieved from 1990 to 2021. The age-standardized prevalence ra

This research examines how artificial intelligence may contribute to better understanding and to overcome over-indebtedness in contexts of high poverty risk. This research uses Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) in a field database of 1654 over-indebted households to identify distinguishable clusters and to predict its risk factors. First, unsupervised machine learning using Self-Organizing Maps generated three over-indebtedness clusters: low-income (31.27%), low credit control (37.40%), and crisis-affected households (31.33%). Second, supervised machine learning with exhaustive grid search h

Purpose: Poverty impacts the daily lives of over 40 million Americans. Allied dental health students need to be aware of the oral health barriers experienced by individuals with limited resources. The purpose of this exploratory descriptive study was to evaluate the impact of a poverty simulation exercise (PSE) on students' understanding of daily challenges faced by low-income families. Methods: A total of 34 second-year dental hygiene students and 23 dental assisting students (n=57) participated in a 3-hour Missouri Association for Community Action poverty simulation exercise (PSE). OBJECTIVE: We examine the association between poverty, economic inequality, and health among elderly in Myanmar.
METHOD: We analyze 2012 data from Myanmar's first representative survey of older adults to investigate how health indicators vary across wealth quintiles as measured by household possessions and housing quality.
RESULTS: Poverty and poor health are pervasive. Self-assessed health, sensory impairment, and functional limitation consistently improve with higher wealth levels regardless of socio-demographic controls. Differentials in self-rated health and sensory impairment between th

Despite combination antiretroviral therapy (ART), HIV infected people have higher mortality than non-infected. Lower socioeconomic status (SES) predicts higher mortality in many chronic illnesses but data in people with HIV is limited. We evaluated 878 HIV infected individuals followed from 1995 to 2005. Cox proportional hazards for all-cause mortality were estimated for SES measures and other factors. Mixed effects analyses examined how SES impacts factors predicting death. The 200 who died were older, had lower CD4 counts, and higher viral loads (VL). Age, transmission category, education, a
