Relaxation response and spirituality: Pathways to improve psychological outcomes in cardiac rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVES: Studies have shown beneficial effects from practicing the relaxation response (RR). Various pathways for these effects have been investigated. Previous small studies suggest that spirituality might be a pathway for the health effects of the RR. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that increased spiritual well-being by eliciting the RR is one pathway resulting in improved psychological outcomes. METHODS: This observational study included 845 outpatients who completed a 13-week mind/body Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. Patients self-reported RR practice time in a questionnaire b

Perceived stress and psychological well-being among Italian midwives: hospital versus community setting.

Work-related stress is a growing concern among healthcare professionals, with potential adverse effects on psychological well-being and quality of care. Midwifery practice, characterised by high emotional demands and frequent exposure to critical events, may increase vulnerability to occupational stress and psychological distress. This study aimed to evaluate perceived stress and psychological well-being among italian midwives and to compare hospital-based and community-based settings. We conducted a cross-sectional multicentric observational study on 175 midwives (140 hospital-based; 35 commu

Empowering digital public health: a study on the mechanisms by which the application of digital technology drives social entrepreneurial intentions in the health sector among university students.

Amidst the tide of the rapid development of digital public health, digital technology has become a core tool driving university students to address social pain points such as health inequality and engage in social innovation. Based on social innovation theory, this study constructs a multiple mediation model of "digital technology application--digital health practice literacy--psychological capital--social entrepreneurial intention," aiming to explore the internal capability and psychological transmission pathways through which digital technology empowerment influences university students' soc

Wellbeing, burnout, and safe practice among healthcare professionals: predictive influences of mindfulness, values, and self-compassion.

Poor wellbeing and burnout are significant issues among health-care professionals (HCPs) and may contribute to unsafe practice. In this exploratory study, we aimed to: provide the first investigation of the combined and unique influences of these psychological factors in predicting safe practice; confirm the role played by mindfulness in relation to wellbeing, burnout and safe practice; and investigate whether values and self-compassion predict additional variability above and beyond mindfulness skills. Ninety-eight NHS staff completed measures of wellbeing, burnout, perceived safety of practi

Practice recommendations for contextualizing explanations of headache pain within a biopsychosocial model.

OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to identify non-dismissive language and synthesize practice recommendations for medical providers to use when discussing potential psychological etiologies of chronic pain. METHODS: Community-recruited emerging adults (18- to 25-year-olds; N = 138; 68 % female) participated in the current study as part of a larger online survey. Participants were randomly assigned to read either a "dismissive" (i.e., attributed pain to primarily psychological etiologies) or "biopsychosocial" (i.e., provided a more nuanced explanation of the complex interplay between psycholo

Network analyses of physical and psychological factors of playing-related musculoskeletal disorders in student musicians: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Young musicians starting their professional education are particularly vulnerable to playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs). In the context of research on PRMDs, physical and psychological associated factors are frequently highlighted without investigating their complex interrelationships. The objective of this exploratory study was to examine the associations between lifestyle, music practice habits, physical and psychological variables, and PRMDs in student musicians. METHODS: Students of the Geneva University of Music participated in the survey. The primary outcome w

Minding our Minds: Obsessive-Compulsiveness, Psychiatry, and Psychology.

Obsessive-compulsive features are commonly found in high-achieving people including psychiatrists, psychologists, and scientists. These traits have a substantial but unrecognized cultural influence on psychiatric and psychological science and practice. This article reviews obsessive-compulsive mechanisms and discusses the ways they both promote and impede psychiatric and psychological science and practice. It examines them in relation to two of the dominant psychiatric and psychological paradigms of our era, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. Finally

Practice-related optimization and transfer of executive functions: a general review and a specific realization of their mechanisms in dual tasks.

Improvements in performing demanding and complex task situations are typically related to the optimization of executive functions and efficient behavioral control. The present study systematizes and reviews the optimization of different executive function types: Shifting, Inhibition, Updating, and Dual tasking. In particular, we focus on optimisations of these functions with training and on transfer effects of related training skills to non-trained situations. The aim of the study's empirical part (see also Appendix) was to investigate the specific mechanisms of executive functions in the cont

Conscious dance: Perceived benefits and psychological well-being of participants.

BACKGROUND: Meta-analyses suggest that dance has potential to decrease psychological distress, increase trait mindfulness, and enhance quality of life. Lost among the trees? The autonomic nervous system and paediatrics.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) has been strikingly neglected in Western medicine. Despite its profound importance for regulation, adjustment and coordination of body systems, it lacks priority in training and practice and receives scant attention in numerous major textbooks. The ANS is integral to manifestations of illness, underlying familiar physical and psychological symptoms. When ANS activity is itself dysfunctional, usual indicators of acute illness may prove deceptive. Recognising the relevance of the ANS can involve seeing the familiar through fresh eyes, challenging assumptions in

Supporting nursing students with dyslexia.

Dyslexia is characterised by difficulties with the accuracy and/or speed of word reading and spelling. Nursing students with dyslexia can experience challenges with assessment methods and learning resources, clinical placements and their emotional and psychological well-being. The decision to disclose dyslexia can be fraught with fear of discrimination or stigmatisation, but disclosure is essential for accessing reasonable adjustments, such as extended time for exams and assistive technologies. This article explores the challenges experienced by nursing students with dyslexia and the strategie

The Psychology of Pandemics.

This article reviews the current state of knowledge and promising new directions concerning the psychology of pandemics. Pandemics are disease outbreaks that spread globally. Historically, psychological factors have been neglected by researchers and health authorities despite evidence that pandemics are, to a large extent, psychological phenomena whereby beliefs and behaviors influence the spreading versus containment of infection. Psychological factors are important in determining (a) adherence to pandemic mitigation methods (e.g., adherence to social distancing), (b) pandemic-related social
